Essential Knit Sweaters by Frauke Ludwig: Review and Giveaway

April 23, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 1 Comment

Essential Knit Sweaters Giveaway on Moogly

Essential Knit Sweaters is the debut book by Frauke Ludwig! Featuring "patterns for every sweater you ever wanted to wear," it's a fantastic guide for every knitter. Get a peek inside below, and then enter to win your own copy on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review, courtesy of Stackpole Books; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Essential Knit Sweaters Review

    A Bit About the Author

Frauke Ludwig, author of Essential Knit Sweaters I don't get to spend as much time as I'd like in the knitting world, but I'm very impressed by Fraunke's book! Here's her official author blurb:

"Frauke Ludwig loves to design timeless, classic sweaters that are also sweet and have that certain something. She is on Instagram @frauluknits."

That's... super short, albeit accurate! So if she won't brag about herself, here's a fab review of this book from Publisher's Weekly:

"Knitwear designer Ludwig debuts with an inspired collection of women’s sweater patterns. Each project includes instructions for sizes XS through XXL, making it easy to tailor garments for different body types... The diversity of techniques finds abundant variety in the sweater form, and a detailed section covering knit and purl stitches and how to bind off provides a thorough refresher for knitters of all experience levels. This has much to recommend it."

    Now let's dive in!

Essential Knit Sweaters by Frauke Ludwig

Taking a Peek Inside Essential Knit Sweaters

From the Amazon page for Essential Knit Sweaters:

    "Knit sweaters to LIVE in!

Comfy pullover? Jacket cardigan? Weekend hoodie? Fitted turtleneck? Think of those sweaters you wear most often, the favorites you reach for again and again because they make you feel both confident and comfortable. Now imagine them hand knitted in soft, beautiful yarns in the colors of your choice.

Each of the designs in this book is a versatile type of sweater everyone should own—all knit in classic stitches and featuring added details to make them unique. Sizes range from XS to XXL. Knitting tutorials and detailed instructions make the patterns easy to follow, so grab your needles and some gorgeous yarn and start filling your wardrobe with sweaters you’ll reach for again and again. With the 20 patterns in Essential Knit Sweaters, you will create the sweater collection of your dreams!"

Essential Knit Sweaters by Frauke Ludwig

Timeless Styles for a Modern Wardrobe

Originally published in Germany, Essential Knit Sweaters really does a great job of covering a wide range of styles of sweaters - and the basics of sweater knitting! As you can see in the Table of Contents below, there is an extensive section on stitching, including lots of info on how to customize the sweater designs within.

Essential Knit Sweaters by Frauke Ludwig

Showing how to knit in pictures and words can be tough, but this book has some great illustrations. And as someone who only knits occasionally, it's super helpful to be able to just turn to that page for a quick review rather than going online for a full tutorial. And the section on "Possible Combinations" is fantastic, making this book an evergreen resource.

Essential Knit Sweaters by Frauke Ludwig

The learning continues in the Projects section, which features 21 different sweater designs. Knitters of every skill level will appreciate the clear and detailed instructions, as well as the gradually increasing difficulty levels as they work through the book. The pattern formatting in Essential Knit Sweaters is excellent, and there are lots of thoughtful touches. I really liked the layout with each row and section highlighted, as well as the detailed measurements given.

Essential Knit Sweaters by Frauke Ludwig

My only criticism of this book is the size range. Each sweater design includes sizes XS to XXL. As a designer, I know that extending to larger sizes can mean a lot more math to ensure a good fit. But as a woman with a body that doesn't always fit within that range, I do wish they had taken the time to continue to 5X. However, if this size range works for you, then I think there is a lot to recommend this book, and it is one you'll be able to knit from for many years to come!

    Rainbow Lattice Wrap

April 19, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 14 Comments

Rainbow Lattice Wrap - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Rainbow Lattice Wrap is a colorful openwork shawl that can be worn in a variety of ways - and it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly! Featuring Bernat Lattice, this "endless" design is perfect for customizing, wearing, and gifting!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

Prefer an ad-free PDF? You've got options!

Prefer the free blog version? Keep scrolling!

    Unlimited Color with Bernat Lattice

To crochet the Rainbow Lattice Wrap, I used new Bernat Lattice yarn - to create a latticework design! A little on the nose, but that was truly just a funny coincidence. I wanted to make something airy and lacey, but full of color. This yarn has dimension and depth, with shade and texture variations throughout each colorway. The pink one makes me think of my favorite dark cherry shake, and the blue is like the perfect spring sky, if it were turned into candy.

Rainbow Lattice Wrap - free crochet pattern on Moogly

With all that texture and a fiber mix of 54% polyester, 28% acrylic, and 18% nylon, experienced stitchers might expect this yarn to be a little rough here and there - but I'm so pleased to say that is not the case. Bernat Lattice is delightfully soft, warm, and wonderful to touch. I took it with me on a recent trip, and saw it capture the imagination of everyone I showed it to!

Rainbow Lattice Wrap - free crochet pattern on Moogly

    Mother's Day? Birthdays? Holidays? That's a Wrap!

There's always a new holiday or celebration to look forward to - and that can mean it's time for gifting! The Rainbow Lattice Wrap is the perfect pattern for gifting (and keeping, of course). A simple stitch repeat on Row 1 lets you make it as long or as short as you'd like. Then, you just keep adding rows in pattern to make it as wide or tall as you need - scarf, wrap, or blanket - it's up to you!

Rainbow Lattice Wrap - free crochet pattern on Moogly

I used a total of 6 colors to make my version, but you can customize yours by using one color - or dozens! Indeed, this pattern would be an *amazing* stash buster. But this means lots of ends... so I've turned those ends into the fringe! That's right, this pattern has not one single end for you to weave in, which means you can go color crazy!

    NOTES:

In this pattern, the yarn is cut after EVERY row, no matter how many colors are used.

ALWAYS leave an 8-inch tail at the beginning AND end of each row, unless you intend to weave them in.

TO CUSTOMIZE THE SIZE: To add length to the wrap, repeat the Row 1 "[ch 9, FSC 5]" repeat as many times as desired. To make the wrap wider, simply repeat Rows 2 - 7 as many times as desired, ending on a Row 6 repeat.

Note that the length "shrinks up" a LOT as you crochet additional rows and the lace pattern appears. Row 1 will be significantly longer than the finished wrap. This fabric had a lot of movement and stretch to it, in both dimensions.

If you are determined to avoid the FSC stitch, you would need to just ch 111 for Row 1. Then, in Row 2, work into the chains instead of stitches. Be sure to mark the chains that would have had stitches worked into them with stitch markers, so you know where to work Row 2.

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 8

My Notes: The Livin' Easy square by Polly Plum is a quick project you can make in an evening or two. The instructions include two starts for each round - what to do when you change colors, and what to do when you stick with the same color as the round before. So every square can be truly unique!

There's a lovely bit of texture as well, and it's easy to add more rounds for size if needed. I can't wait to see all the wonderful variations you all come up with!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle (subbed for the ch start), Chainless Starting Double Crochet (subbed for ch 3 start), Join with SC (STSC), Back Loop Only (BLO), Treble Crochet, Post Stitches, Decreases, Join with DC (STDC), and seamless join.

Sizing: My square got to size as written. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 and 2: Daffodil
    Rnd 3:
    Light Gray
    Rnds 4 and 5:
    White
    Rnds 6 - 8:
    Light Gray
    Rnds 9 - 11:
    Daffodil
    Rnds 12 - 15:
    White

This square required a very mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    Dora Does: Designer Showcase

Dora Does Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features the talented Michelle of Dora Does! I always admire Michelle's work on Instagram, and love her chic, modern, wearable designs. Learn more about her, and get 5 free crochet patterns here on Moogly - plus a bonus!

    A Bit About the Designer

If you remember Hookin' On Hump Day or The Loop Scoop here on Moogly, then you have probably spotted Michelle's designs - they were featured dozens of times! So I'm excited to learn more about her and share her work in this Designer Showcase!

Here's a bit about Michelle in her own words:

    Michelle of Dora Does

Michelle, aka Dora, established Dora Does in 2017 to share her patterns and record her journey as a crochet designer. The Dora Does blog explores all things crochet, from the fundamentals to the foundations of design. It aims to serve as a resource for adventurous beginners to freestylers and budding designers.

Based from her home in Cambridge, UK, she designs practical, modern crochet garments and accessories, and contemporary homeware patterns. All with a hint of playfulness and joy.

Michelle loves to experiment with different construction methods, sharing her exploration of different design styles, textures, and drape. As an internet-taught crocheter, she is able to approach crochet without traditional preconceptions. Her mission is to dispel the myth that only advanced crocheters can make their own wardrobe.

Crochet wearables are for everyone who wants to try them; Michelle wants to help makers build the confidence to start, and continue on that journey, all the while emphasizing the benefits crochet can have on one’s well-being and personal growth.

She firmly believes we are all works in progress.

    Crochet Baby Sets Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Kristi Simpson, author

I've never had a chance to meet Kristi, but she has authored many books and her work is everywhere! Here's her official author blurb:

"Driven by her love of yarn & crafts, Kristi's mission is to: Create Design & Inspire with a fresh and modern touch.  Kristi is a best selling Author/Designer and her work is/has been published in: Magazines (including several covers), Books, Kits, DVD's, Catalogs, Online Classes/Tutorials/Venues, and with many Yarn Companies. Kristi has hosted multiple chemo cap drives where over 2,000 hats have been donated! She is married with 4 children."

Taking a Peek Inside Crochet Baby Sets

From the Amazon page for Crochet Baby Sets:

"Welcome baby with crocheted blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, and more!

In this collection for baby, you'll find patterns for matching sets of baby classics like sweaters, blankets, and booties. Make the sets as shown or mix and match--all items are made with DK weight yarn so it is easy to use your favorite yarns and make any of the pieces to create the ultimate baby layette.

Sizes range from newborn to 12 months, and all patterns are easy to intermediate in skill level. You don't need to be a crochet expert to make a beautiful gift for baby. If you need a refresher or are new to a crochet technique, step-by-step tutorials are included. There are 30 designs in all. Get in on the fun of giving crocheted joy to all the new babies in your life!"

Crochet Baby Sets by Kristi Simpson

Classic Baby Crochet for Every Occasion

After a quick intro and a page of helpful tips, this book jumps right into the patterns! The 30 patterns in Crochet Baby Sets are broken into 10 coordinated sets, each with its own cute name, and all made with "3" weight yarn. The pattern writing style is what I would call US standard - easy to read, complete, with stitch counts included.

Crochet Baby Sets by Kristi Simpson: Review and Giveaway

Each set includes a slightly different grouping: Theo includes socks, a hat, and a vest. Molly includes a onseie, shorts, and a bib. Ari consists of a hat, booties, and blanket - and there are 7 more sets! While these divisions make it easy to put together a set for big gifts, they can also be mixed and matched - I think the Theo Socks match the Molly Onsie beautifully!

Crochet Baby Sets by Kristi Simpson: Review and Giveaway

Overall, in Crochet Baby Sets you get patterns for 7 hats, 5 blankets, 4 booties, a dress, 4 sweaters, a pair of mitts, 2 pairs of socks, shorts, sandals, onsie, headband, leggings, and a bib! You can pull this book out for every baby shower for life, just update the colors. They are solid basics that will give new crocheters quick success and give experienced crocheters basics to embellish and personalize!

Crochet Baby Sets by Kristi Simpson: Review and Giveaway

Finally, the back has the usual but useful stitch tutorials, accompanied by some great full-color photos! There are also a couple of pages on how to read a pattern, confirming this as a great first book to gift a new crocheter - particularly one with a new family member on the way.

    MooglyCAL2024 - Block 7 by Oombawka Design

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my first Daffodil one as I work through the rainbow!)

    MooglyCAL2024 - Block 7 by Oombawka Design

The Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 7

My Notes: The Endless Afgahn Square pattern is a lovely center out block that can just... keep on going! This means you can work to size, without any worries about gauge. Once I was a few rounds in, I had the hang of the pattern and just kept stitching to get to size.

I did make a change to the final round - I needed to skip the ch-2 sps, crocheting only into the sc sts, and working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. Otherwise, I found that my edges started to ruffle up a bit. You might not have the same issue, but if you do, that's how I fixed it!

I followed the same color layout as Rhondda, but you can really change colors (or not) whenever you like! I can't wait to see all the wonderful variations you all come up with!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle (subbed for the ch 2 start), Join with SC (STSC), and... that's it! This one is mostly single crochet!

Sizing: My square was a bit small after Rnd 15, so I added an extra round in pattern, in White.

    Color A: Light Gray
    B:
    White
    C:
    Daffodil

This square required a very mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

Made in Quick and Easy Bernat Blanket!

There are lots of varieties of Bernat Blanket, and I had to poll the family to decide which orange to go with - it was a tough choice! If you can't find the exact colors I've used for the Fox Squish, there are lots of great options. Blanket comes in dozens of colors and is so easy to care for, it's perfect for these squishes. As a 6-Super Bulky yarn, this pattern creates a 10" toy - a little bigger once it's stuffed! If you'd like to make it smaller - or even bigger - choose whatever yarn you like, and use whatever hook gets you a nice tight fabric.

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This crochet fox pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes and a safety nose, but this pattern has not been "tested for safety for children under 3 years of age." If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the features and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely - especially that tail! If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

STTR - Standing Treble Crochet: (Click here to see a STDC video tutorial - this stitch is the same, but with one more yarn over.) Secure the yarn end in the palm of your hook hand. Yo on hook 3 times, insert hook into indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] 3 times.

    Notes:

This pattern begins with a row of FDC. This means there is no starting chain. If you prefer to avoid using the FDC stitch, chain the number of stitches for your size, plus 2. Dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and each rem ch across, so you end up with the correct number of stitches for Row 1.

Change colors every 4 rows, EXCEPT when indicated at the Neck Opening.

If you prefer to avoid using the STTR stitch, you can join to the first st of the row with a slip stitch and ch 4, or use another tr stitch substitute.

If you prefer to avoid using the CSTR stitch, instead ch 4 or use another tr stitch substitute.

Finally, if you prefer to avoid using the STSC stitch, instead join to the first st of the row with a sl st and ch 1, then sc in the first st.

Every time you break the yarn, be sure to leave a 6-10" tail. These will be used later for seaming.

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 2 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my third and final Cornsilk one as I work through the rainbow!)

The Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 6

My Notes: The Lodestar Square is a great graphic center-out square that can be worked up in an afternoon or evening! Post stitches and color changes work together to create the star, and as you can see, there's room here to play! I used a different color layout than Mary Beth did, and I can't wait to see all the wonderful variations you all come up with!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Not all of these stitches are included in the pattern, but I used them all in my version, so you can use them too if you like! Magic Circle (subbed for the ch 4 ring), CSDC in the ring (subbed for the first 3 chs of Rnd 1), Post Stitches, Butterfly Bobbins, Tapestry Crochet (for some multicolor rows), STDC (subbed for the first 3 chs of any ch 5 start), and BLO (used for an extra round to get to size).

Sizing: My square was a bit small after Rnd 8, so I added a round of blo dc and a final round of sc.

    Rnds 1 - 3: Cornsilk
    Rnds 4 - 7:
    Light Grey, Cornsilk, and White
    Rnd 8:
    Light Gray and White
    Rnds 9 and
    10 (added for size): White

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

Can Crochet Solve Every Problem? So far so good!

Plush Plant Wrap - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

I love the creativity and endless possibilities of crochet, as well as its practicalities! And one of the things that has always gotten me excited is using crochet to make my home comfier, cozier, and prettier. It makes me so happy, creating designs that solve problems... even when the problem is just an ugly plastic plant pot!

So for International Crochet Month, I decided to tackle one of my personal "pain" points - a lovely hibiscus living its best life in its original plastic pot. This little bush lives outside in the summer, but winters indoors. And it needed an upgrade... but it's not the season to transplant.

Plush Plant Wrap - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly
Sad, naked plant pot (and a few jars off to the left)

Crochet to the rescue! I've made plant cozies before, but I needed something that could be customized to a "non-standard" size. Additionally, I needed to keep the bottom totally open - this plant likes lots of drainage. Challenge accepted!

Create a Completely Custom Crochet Plush Plant Wrap

The Plush Plant Wrap crochet pattern is the result. The structure and design are simple, but it packs a big punch!

The instructions below show you how to customize the size of your Plant Wrap, ensuring a perfect fit for any container - and the buttons mean you can remove and reuse it with ease! And of course, you can use this pattern to wrap up all sorts of containers - in addition to making one for my hibiscus, I took a bit of yarn leftover from another project and wrapped up an old food jar I'm using for one of my monstera cuttings!

Plush Plant Wrap - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Plush Plant Wrap makes any old container look great, and it adds an inviting bit of texture to the space. The Star Stitch makes another appearance here, and it looks great! Bernat Plush Big makes this project super fast, and gives it a very modern feel. Now I'm excited to share it with all of you, so we can all be happier in our spaces!

Of course, you can use any yarn you have on hand - just use a hook to match your yarn, and follow the free crochet plant pot cover pattern below!

    Special Stitches:

Beg LSS - Beginning Large Star Stitch: Insert hook in loop created by final yarn over of previous dc st and pull up loop, insert hook in back loop of bottom half of previous dc st and pull up loop, insert hook in same st as dc and pull up loop, [insert hook in next st and pull up loop] twice (6 loops on hook), yo and pull through all loops.

LSS - Large Star Stitch: Insert hook in ch just made and pull up loop, insert hook in back loop of bottom half of previous LSS and pull up loop, insert hook in last st used in previous LSS and pull up loop, [insert hook in next st and pull up loop] twice (6 loops on hook), yo and pull through all loops.

LDC - Linked Double Crochet Stitch: Insert hook in ch just made and pull up loop, insert hook in last st used in previous LSS and pull up loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] twice.

Plush Plant Wrap - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

    Notes:

This pattern is meant to be completely customizable to your needs. Therefore, specific numbers are not given. Any odd number of stitches works to begin this pattern. You may need to choose between going slightly taller or slightly shorter than your container - which you choose is up to you, and the look you're going for.

While it is customizable, and a gauge is given, no math beyond counting your stitches is required. The Plush Plant Wrap is made side to side. This means that the width of your first row will be the height of the wrap, and then you'll work enough rows to wrap around the container. This means that, for the number of rows, too long is better than too short.

For finishing, I used large wooden buttons, sewn to the inside of the wrap. The Jumbo yarn used here leaves holes in the fabric that are the right size to slip the buttons through. If you use a different yarn, be sure to use buttons that fit that fabric. The number of buttons used just depends on how big your wrap is - but 1-3 should do it for most sizes.

    All buttoned up!

Plush Plant Wrap Crochet Pattern Instructions

Set Up: Measure the height and circumference of the container you want to cover, or keep it nearby while you crochet. (Be sure to check sizing before breaking yarn!)

Row 1 [WS]: FSC any odd number of stitches, working to the height of the container; turn.

Row 2 [RS]: CSDC in first st, Beg LSS in next st, ch 1, *LSS in next st, ch 1; rep from * across, LDC in last st; turn. (st count will be the count in Row 1 +1)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across until 2 sts rem, skip the next st, sc in the last st changing to Color B; turn. (same st count as Row 1)

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the piece is long enough to wrap around the container, ending on a Row 3 repeat.

Last Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across; break yarn and finish off.

Finishing: Sew button(s) to the WS of the fabric, behind the Last Row.

Specifics on the Plush Plant Wrap Samples Shown:

For the smaller, Gold wrap, I went with 7 sts and 13 rows, to wrap around an old pickle jar. It measured approximately 6" x 14" laid flat, and closed with one button. Less than one skein was used.

For the larger, Off White wrap, I went with 11 sts across and 27 rows, to wrap around a 9" tall plant pot. It measured approximately 9" x 33" laid flat, and closed with two buttons. Less than 3 skeins were used.

    Crochet Cozies for Everything!

    Block #5:

    Sweet and Fair Afghan Square

    by Julie Yeager Designs

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 5 Courtesy of Julie Yeager Designs

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 5 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my second yellow one as I work through the rainbow!)

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 5 Courtesy of Julie Yeager Designs

    The Details for Square #5

My Notes: Light, springy, and floral - the Sweet and Fair Afghan Square is perfect for March! This is a quick and relatively simple pattern, one you can work up in an evening or two. Only 10 rounds gets you through the whole square, so if you haven't jumped in yet, this is a good one to get started on! Julie's directions are great and easy to follow, and each round brings the opportunity for new color choices!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: This square uses lots of clusters and decreases, gathered up with post stitches  - love the clean color change effect this gives! These tutorials may help: Magic Circle, CSDC in the ring, CSTR, Post Stitches, Decreases, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square was getting a bit big, so I skipped Rnd 9 and worked Rnd 10 as hdc instead of dc.

    Rnd 1: White
    Rnd 2:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 3:
    White
    Rnd 4:
    Light Grey
    Rnd 5:
    White
    Rnd 6 and 7:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 8:
    Light Grey
    Rnd 9:
    skipped for size
    Rnd 10:

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

babé crochet hat templates tell you how big (or small) to make your hats to fit every size - no math or tape measures needed! Here's a video I made on TikTok with more info on how they work. It was for a previous giveaway... but this one is just the same, with a later date!

@mooglyblog babé crochet hat templates are a life saver. 3 sets need new homes, anywhere in the world, but only until November 28, 2023 😉🌏🥳 @babecrochetco #mooglyblog #crochet #hats #crochethats #learntocrochet #fyp ♬ Chill Day - LAKEY INSPIRED

These are genuinely ridiculously easy to use. Working your hat top-down (crown to brim), put the center of your first round over the hole. Then, you match the size of your flat circle to the top of the curve. Once that is achieved, work even until it's the length of the template. No more consulting endless charts or trying it on over and over again - or worse yet, just hoping! Instead, you can grab the template for the size of the hat you're making and toss it in your project bag. If you crochet for a big family - or craft fairs - you can put together a set of templates with your most needed sizes to whip them up faster than ever! Great for all your holiday travel and vacations!

    Babe Crochet Hat Templates

By Once, Use It for Life

I've been using them for years - ever since I first learned about them! And I can tell that the set I have will last my entire crochet career, and keep getting used. These hat templates are made from strong plastic and each is embossed with its "Tool Number." You can see how these work on the chart below. You'll get a chart with each set, as well as a wire ring to keep the templates and chart organized, and a tutorial on how to use the templates.

Each full set includes baby to adult head sizes from Newborn all the way up to Adult XL (Head circumferences of 34.95cm up to 61.6cm -- 13 ¾" up to 24 ¼’) - perfect!

Happening APRIL 5-6, with a bonus class day April 7th

"Stitch Up Chicago was born from the idea of taking an online group offline to share fiber love. That is what every single Stitch Up is about: creating safe spaces and celebrating our common love of fiber. We had to take a break because of the pandemic and some personal life challenges, but it is time… so here we are planning our SIXTH Annual event and humbled by how our community has grown."

Susan Bates Twist + Lock Deluxe Hook Set with Bag Giveaway

February 27, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 134 Comments

Susan Bates Twist + Lock with Bag Giveaway

When Susan Bates Twist + Lock Deluxe Hooks first debuted, I fell in love! The large, ergonomic handle and the space saved in my notions bag are still appreciated every time I crochet. But there was one thing missing - a custom bag to keep them all in, neat and organized. Now, Yarnspirations has fixed that, with the new Susan Bates Twist + Lock Deluxe Hook Set with Bag - and I'm giving away a set right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by Yarnspirations and may include affiliate links; all opinions are my own.

Susan Bates Twist + Lock with Bag Giveaway on Moogly

"Crocheting just became easier with the Susan Bates Twist + Lock interchangeable crochet hook tool. Select the desired hook size and insert it into the opening of the oversized soft-touch handle. With a simple Twist and Lock, your crochet hook will fit snugly in place whether in action or in storage." And now, the storage is included!

Susan Bates Twist + Lock with Bag Giveaway on Moogly

What is Included in a Susan Bates Twist + Lock Deluxe Hook with Bag Set:

    • 2 oversized soft-touch handles (because we all know you have more than one WIP...)
    • 2 yarn cutters (no more poking yourself reaching into your bag!)
    • 6 crochet hook attachments: F/3.75mm, G/4mm, H/5mm, I/5.5mm, J/6mm, and K/6.5mm (anodized aluminum, in-line head, and color-coded for quick size selection!)
    • 1 custom zipper bag to keep them all neat and organized, and easy to find!

Buy It Now: Yarnspirations.com or at your local Michaels or JOANN!

Susan Bates Twist + Lock with Bag Giveaway on Moogly

Easy to Carry, Easy to Use, Easy to Fall In Love With!

I've very much enjoyed using my Susan Bates Twist + Lock hooks for the past couple of years - you can see them featured in most of my patterns! I love having a wide range of hook sizes to hand, without having to stuff my notions bag full. And the cutter has been so handy for on the go - especially when going where scissors get the side eye.

Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along: Market Day Cardigan

And while the large handle took a little getting used to, I find that it really helps avoid hand fatigue. When I have to use a different hook (due to size), I can really tell the difference! It works well for both knife and pencil holds, and feels great to use!

    by Marly Bird

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 4 Courtesy of Marly Bird

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my first yellow one as I work through the rainbow!)

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 4 courtesy of Marly Bird

    The Details for Square #4

My Notes: Settle in for a mini-CAL all-in-one square! This square is made of squares, all joined up and bordered for a little blanket inside your blanket. The Larkwood Crochet Block is made of 9 small squares, all with a lovely bit of graphic texture. I stuck with the original color plan (swapping out my colors of course), but there are so many opportunities to play with the color and layout here! A few final rounds make it easy to adjust for size, just be sure to measure as you go! I did make one small change, doing (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the corners of the final round because I know it will work best for the joining I plan to use.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: This square is made of just a few different stitches, but some interesting techniques! These tutorials may help: magic circle, CSDC in the ring, working in the 3rd loop, Shdc - Standing Half Double Crochet, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written, if not a hair over.

    Color A: Cornsilk
    Color B:
    White
    Color C:
    Light Gray

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    The Pattern:

CLICK HERE FOR THE PATTERN FOR BLOCK #4 - VIDEO INCLUDED!

    Show Off Your Squares!

If you share your photos on social media, be sure to use the hashtags #mooglycal2024 and #yarnspo and tag me @mooglyblog so I can see them too! And don't forget to share them in the MooglyCAL Facebook Group! Thank you all for CAL-ing with me!

Crochet Foundry Magazine - covers collage 1

Crochet Foundry Magazine sources its patterns and articles from crochet designers around the world - and getting published in it is a great opportunity! So I asked Jessie if she had a message for aspiring designers?

She said, "Don't be discouraged if you submit a design to a magazine and it doesn't get picked. Some really beautiful designs may not fit the theme as well as others, there are almost always way more amazing designs than there is room for or budget to pay for, and there are many other reasons why a great design doesn't get picked. Keep on going!"

    Amazing! Thank you Jessie!

    cbfiberworks: Designer Showcase

    cbfiberworks: Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features the talented Chanel Beauchamp-Snyder of cbfiberworks! Chanel creates adorable amigurumi crochet patterns, as well as tutorials! Learn more about her, and get 5 free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

    A Bit About the Designer

I love the creativity and attention to detail in Chanel's designs, and I'm super excited to share her work and learn more about her in this Designer Showcase!

Here's a bit about Chanel in her own words:

    cbfiberworks: Designer Showcase on Moogly

Hi! I'm Chanel Beauchamp-Snyder and I'm the amigurumi designer behind cbfiberworks! My crochet journey began in 2016 when my mixed media professor announced one day that she was going to teach us to crochet with wire. From then on I was hooked (pun very much intended). After that initial lesson I started experimenting with shapes and teaching myself how to make amigurumi by watching YouTube tutorials.

In late 2019, I published my first amigurumi pattern and cbfiberworks was born. However, as I started to find my footing as a designer, I realized there were so many things that tripped me up when I first started crocheting. I wanted to find a way to help other amigurumi makers skip over those roadblocks, so in 2021 I started my blog and began creating my own free patterns and tutorials.

I absolutely love the sculptural aspect of amigurumi and I'm always striving to learn something new with each new pattern. My number one goal is to help other crocheters grow their craft and pursue their unique brand of creativity through the magic of amigurumi.

When I'm not crocheting I'm playing Minecraft or reading but I also love watching movies with my husband and cuddling my two dogs. And as a certified coffee addict, whenever I travel I'm always on the lookout for a good local coffee shop.

    Floral Berry Square

    by The Purple Poncho

MooglyCAL2024 Block 3 Courtesy of The Purple Poncho

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 5 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my last red one as I work through the rainbow!)

MooglyCAL2024 Block 3 Courtesy of The Purple Poncho

    The Details for Square #3

My Notes: Pretty, entertaining, textured, and educational - all describe Carolyn's latest block design! The Floral Berry Square features a great mix of stitches and stitch patterns, with lots of built-in color changes. Delightfully, this combo of textures also makes it great in all one shade. The pattern itself is easy to follow and crochet, but it does take time - I spent 3 evenings on this one! The pictures are super helpful, so just be patient with this one.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: This square is made of lots of stitches, many of which may be new to some crocheters! These tutorials may help: 3rd-BLO, BPsc, Ssc - Standing Single Crochet, Shdc - Standing Half Double Crochet, Sdc - Standing Double Crochet, and Bst - Berry Stitch (aka the Picot Single Crochet Stitch). You can also optionally use the Magic Circle and Seamless Finishing if desired.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written.

    Rnds 1 - 2: White
    Rnd 3:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 4:
    Holly Berry
    Rnd 5:
    White
    Rnd 6:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 7:
    Holly Berry
    Rnd 8:
    White
    Rnd 9:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 10:
    Holly Berry
    Rnd 11:
    White
    Rnd 12:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 13:
    Holly Berry
    Rnd 14:
    White
    Rnd 15:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 16:
    Holly Berry
    Rnd 17:
    White

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    Ladybug... or Love Bug Squish?!

There's just something about Ladybugs that makes them more appealing than most other insects. Is it the name? The ultra-fashionable polka dots? Whatever it is, making one in yarn is extra happy! But you don't have to stick to those dots...

What if you replaced the circles with hearts? You'd have yourself a Love Bug! Add a couple hearts in red behind the eyes to send it over the top! (see my silly mockup below ♥) There are hundreds of free crochet heart patterns, so pick a favorite and make it your own!

Ready to Squeeze in Bernat Blanket

There are lots of varieties of Bernat Blanket, so grab the red and black closest to you for this fun stuffed bug project! Bernat Blanket comes in dozens of colors and is so easy to care for, it's perfect for these squishes.

This crochet ladybug pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes, but this pattern has not been tested for safety for children under 3 years of age. If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the eyes and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely. If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

1 - Add Safety Eyes and Mouth:  Add safety eyes to the Face.  As shown, the eyes are between Rnds 2 and 3. (If making a Love Bug, add red hearts between face and safety eyes if desired.) Using Color A, sew on a smile if desired.

2 - Add Feelers to Face: Use the tails of the Feelers to sew them to the last rnd of the Face, spaced evenly above the eyes, approximately 10 sts apart.

3 - Add Face to Body: Using its long tail, sew the Face to the Body. Center the face opposite the last st of the body, just a bit above Rnd 18. Do not sew down the feelers.
