Crochet Baskets that Stand Up Tall
Have you ever wondered how to make a crochet basket stand up? There are several techniques that can be used - and one of my favorites is using a crochet hook much smaller than the yarn recommends. This creates a very stiff fabric!
Another method is to use a hard basket base, as I have done here! I got this basket base from Hooked For Life. There they have both wooden and aluminum bases to choose from! And while I left mine plain, they are paintable for a custom look too. I think you could great really creative with Mod Podge on these too!
Bernat Maker Big - so Big!
This free chunky crochet basket pattern with handles is made with Bernat Maker Big. This jumbo yarn has a great feel and combined with a smaller hook, it creates a very stiff fabric!
In past basket patterns, I've combined the trick of a small hook with a double layer of crochet to create stand up crochet baskets. The Super Sturdy Crochet Basket doesn't need this though - just one layer is plenty in this yarn!

NOTES:
This pattern is worked in a spiral, with no joins and no chains at the beginning of rnds. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to help you keep track.
Don't have a basket base and prefer to crochet one? Using the larger hook, make a basic sc circle in a spiral, starting with 6 sts in the first rnd, and increasing 6 sts per round until the circle has 48 sts.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Rnd 1 [Prepping the base]: With Color A and smallest hook, sl st around holes of basket base, as for surface crochet.
After working into each hole, pull the tail end of the yarn back through to the side you've been stitching on. Send this end through the center of the last st and weave it under the row with the hook to secure it.
Rnd 2: Insert hook in first st made in Rnd 1 on other side of base, yo and pull up a loop, pull up a loop in next st, yo and pull through both loops for first sc (place marker), sc in each remaining loop around, including the loop made at the beginning of this rnd. (48 sc)
Rnd 3: Switch to larger hook, sc in each st around.
Rnd 4 - 11: Sc in each st around; at the end of Rnd 11, finish last st with Color B and break Color A.
Rnd 12: With Color B, BLO sc in each st around.
Rnd 13: Repeat Row 4.
Rnd 14 [Handles made]: Sc in next 8 sts, ch 8, skip 8 sts, sc in the next 16 sts, ch 8, skip 8 sts, sc in the last 8 sts.
Rnd 15: Sc in each st and BLO of each ch around; sl st in first st of rnd, break yarn and seamless join. Weave in all ends.

I love these baskets. I made one for part an M N D. Challenge in march. And I am making more for my granddaughter. I will upload the pictures when made. And I pinned it. Other people have pinned it from me so I hope you get the credit. Thank you.
