Market Day Cardigan Part 3 - Moogly

The Market Day Cardigan is an easy and interesting sleeveless cardigan or oversized open-front vest - and we've reached week 3 of its month-long crochet along! This crochet topper features Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn and includes sizes XS to 5X. In this post, get Part 3 of this free crochet pattern!

ALL ABOUT THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

Granny square projects make geometry fun - and there are so amazing projects you can make with granny squares! This one is one is a unique way to construct a garment, and something I've been eager to try for a while.

Market Day Cardigan Part 1 - free crochet along on Moogly

The Market Day Cardigan is made to be big and cozy - easy to throw on when there is a chill in the air. So with that in mind (and a 6" square to base everything around), there are 3 sizes to fit most - feel free to go down a size if you like a closer fit.

Market Day Cardigan Part 1 - free crochet along on Moogly

Here in Part 3 is where the magic of this design happens - it transforms from "squares" to a wearable piece! The Market Day Cardigan is great for every skill level. In the first two parts we learned how to crochet a granny square and how to sew the mattress stitch, and now we'll learn how to crochet in the front and back loop only,  and how to make one of my favorite styles of crochet ribbing!

HOW THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN CROCHET ALONG WORKS

This post is the third of three parts for this crochet along, being originally shared in January and February of 2024. In addition to the written pattern, there is a video tutorial for each section, shared in both right and left-handed versions - these will debut later that same week. These posts will be right here on mooglyblog.com, and free for all! On your end, all you need to do is make the pattern - no need to sweat the deadline, take your time!

Here is the Schedule (click on links to go to past posts):

THE YARN FOR THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

To make this crochet sleevelss cardigan I used new Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn! This yarn takes a bit of practice, but I walk you through the tricks I use to get squares I love -  CLICK HERE to see how to make great granny squares using this yarn. We'll use it for the rest of the sweater too - no need to plan the color placement after the squares are made.

Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along: Market Day Cardigan

I went with the Aran-Cream colorway for a neutral look, but I've been loving seeing everyone's colors as we work through this pattern! If this yarn isn't the look you're going for, you can use another 4-worsted/medium-weight yarn to make your own 6" granny squares.

For a longer-length sweater: Add squares to the top two rows along the sides, and to the bottom of the bottom row of squares. Be sure to add as many columns of squares to the top sides as you add rows of squares to the bottom. Remember that each column/row adds 6 inches of length. The collar instructions do not need to be changed, but you may wish to add seaming along the sides - be sure to leave the top 2 sets of squares at the top unsewn for an armhole. The Details for Square #2

My Notes: Linda is using the Diamonds Reflected Block to teach us that simple stitches can have a big impact! The trick with long or spike stitches is making sure that you pull each loop of the stitch up nice and high, well above the rest of the fabric, as you make the stitch. Even so, you may find that this square looks a little crazy when you're finished crocheting it - and that's because this square absolutely needs to be blocked.

If you haven't blocked a square before, there is a tutorial linked below, but it is simpler than it sounds. For this square's blocking, I recommend you get it wet (not dripping) and pin it out to size. Then, after it's dried, go ahead and steam it as well - you don't want to melt the yarn if you are using acrylic, but you do want to let it relax so it can hold its shape when it's unpinned. Any remaining slight variations can be covered by your joining method later!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: This square is made of simple stitches, including Standing Single Crochet, Long Loop Single Crochets (aka Spike Stitches), and you can also optionally use the Magic Circle and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written, but it needed a strong blocking to get to square. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 - 5: Light Gray
    Rnds 6 - 10:
    Holly Berry
    Rnds 11 - 15: Light Gray
    Rnds 16 - 18:
    White

This square required strong blocking. I used the wet blocking method followed by steaming.

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

THE YARN FOR THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

To make this crochet vest I used new Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn! This yarn definitely has a bit of a learning curve, but I think it's well worth it! CLICK HERE to see how to make great granny squares using this yarn. We'll use it for the rest of the sweater too - no need to plan the color placement after the squares are made.

This pattern is being presented as a crochet along. Below you will find Part 2 of the pattern. Part 3 will be in a later blog post. CLICK HERE for Part 1.

To try it on for size: As you sew your squares together, do NOT weave in the ends. After they are all attached to each other, use a stitch marker to attach the corners at the two red dots and two blue dots as shown in the Assemble the Squares schematics below. This creates the armholes. Try the garment on, and see if you want to remove or add squares to change the size. Then remove the stitch markers and go on to the Edging instructions.

For a long-length sweater: Add squares to the top two rows along the sides, and to the bottom of the bottom row of squares. Be sure to add as many columns of squares to the top sides as you add rows of squares to the bottom. Remember that each column/row adds 6 inches of length.

Market Day Cardigan Part Two Instructions

    Assemble The Squares

Using cut lengths of yarn, a yarn needle, and the mattress stitch (see linked tutorial above), sew the finished squares together as shown in the schematic for your size below. They do not need to be sewn in any particular orientation or order, as long as they match the schematic at the end. Be sure that all squares are right side (RS) up as you sew. Each square in the schematic represents one motif.

    Edge The Squares

If right-handed, join with sl st from the RS to the right top corner ch-3 sp of the sweater (see green dot in schematic above).
If left-handed, join with sl st from the RS to the left top corner ch-3 sp of the sweater (see purple dot in schematic above).

Ch 1, sc in same ch-3 sp, [*{sc in next 3 sts, sc in next ch sp} 5 times, 2 sc in next ch sp; rep from * to next ch-3 corner,** ch 2, sc in same ch-3 sp] 6 times, ending last rep at **, sc in same ch-3 sp as first st, ch 1, hdc in first sc of rnd. Do not break the yarn.

If right-handed, place a stitch marker in st #44 counting from the right corner (green dot) along the top (longest) edge, and in st #69 counting from the left (purple dot) along the top edge.
If left-handed, place a stitch marker in st #44 counting from the left corner (purple dot) along the top (longest) edge, and in st #69 counting from the right (green dot) along the top edge.

    Assembly: Felting and Embroidery

    Felting with a Washing Machine

Place your finished crochet project in a zippered mesh bag or a pillowcase to protect your washing machine from loose fibers. If you're felting multiple items, keep them separate to prevent them from sticking together.

Set your washing machine to a hot water cycle and add a small amount of mild detergent. High water agitation and hot temperatures are crucial for the felting process. Avoid using fabric softeners or any additives.

Place the bag containing your crochet project in the washing machine and start the cycle. Check on the progress every 10-15 minutes to ensure the felting is proceeding as expected. Keep in mind that felting time may vary depending on your washing machine and the size of your project.

Once your project reaches the desired level of felting, remove it from the washing machine. Check for a consistent, firm texture and a reduction in size. If needed, repeat the felting process until you achieve the desired results.

After felting, rinse your project under cold water to remove any remaining soap. Gently squeeze out excess water and reshape/block your item to its intended form. Allow it to air dry completely.

    Felting by Hand

Fill a clean bowl or basin with hot water, a small amount of mild detergent, and (optional) a sprinkle of baking soda. Stir to dissolve well. Avoid using fabric softeners or any additives.

Place your finished crochet project in the water. With a wooden spoon or your hands, agitate and stir the crochet pieces. High water agitation and hot temperatures are crucial for the felting process.

Check on the progress every 5 minutes to ensure the felting is proceeding as expected. Keep in mind that felting time may vary.

Once your project reaches the desired level of felting, remove it from the hot water.

    Add the Embroidery

There are dozens of Conversation Hearts sayings to choose from - and of course, you can always make your own custom one!

To add the embroidery, cut a 2-3 foot length of floss, thread it on a yarn needle, and sew on the block letters to the Top of the Box as desired. Be sure plan out your spacing before you begin. To make letters as shown, I used the backstitch technique (linked in tutorials above).

ALL ABOUT THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

There are so many amazing projects you can make with granny squares! I'm excited to share yet another unique way to make a granny square sweater! In a way, this one is like a stay-put wrap or shawl - so cozy and wearable!

Market Day Cardigan Part 1 - free crochet along on Moogly

The Market Day Cardigan is made to be big and cozy - a final layer to throw on when cuddling up in a cozy chair, heading to work in a chilly office, or wandering through the local shops! (Of course, freezing temps might require a coat...) So with that in mind, there are 3 sizes to fit most - and you can customize your fit a bit when you choose your size. There is also an opportunity to try it on as you go!

Market Day Cardigan Part 1 - free crochet along on Moogly

One of the super fun things about this pattern is the way it transforms from "squares" to a wearable piece - all in just one final section! This means that the Market Day Cardigan is wonderful for every skill level. If you're a beginner, you'll learn how to crochet a granny square, how to crochet in the front and back loop only, and how to sew the mattress stitch. If you've done all that before, then you'll have a wonderfully relaxing crochet project with a fun finish to tickle your brain a little!

THE YARN FOR THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

To make this crochet vest I used new Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn! I was just as skeptical as you at first - could it really work? And there was definitely a learning curve. However, I'm so glad I kept at it! I do think it's important to be patient, be willing to "frog it and fix it" here and there, and let go of perfectionism. After all, crochet can only be made by hand, it's an art!

Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along: Market Day Cardigan

I went with the Aran-Cream colorway for a neutral look, but this yarn has so many great color options each sweater can be unique! Mix and match them for a custom look, or use another 4-worsted/medium-weight yarn to make your own 6" granny squares.

    MooglyCAL2024 Block 1

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year!)

    The Details for Square #1

My Notes: Right off the bat, Jessie is here to challenge our crochet skills! The stitches themselves are simple - though I do recommend you check out her tutorial for the dch2, as it's just right for this pattern. The square itself is almost all double crochets and chains, so just take your time with it. Use a bookmark or something to help you go line by line, and make sure you are somewhere you can concentrate. And the good news - Jessie is great about both video and photo tutorials, and there's a whole Facebook group to help too! Don't let this one intimidate you, just go one step at a time.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Jessie is providing a video tutorial for this square, so all I have to add to this list are Braiding Crochet Loops and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" after Rnd 11, so I skipped Rnd 12. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

What I Did: I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 - 5: Holly Berry
    Rnds 6 - 9:
    Light Gray
    Rnds 10 and 11:
White (Rnd 12 skipped for size)

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along: Market Day Cardigan

Most years I try to do a quick, month-long crochet along - but 2023 got away from me! So we're kicking 2024 off with one featuring a brand new yarn. How the Market Day Cardigan Crochet Along Works

Over the next 3 weeks of January 2024, I will post a section of the Market Day Cardigan crochet pattern. Each post will go live at 10 am Central US time, barring technical difficulties. There will also be a video tutorial for each section, shared in both right and left-handed versions. These posts will be right here on mooglyblog.com, and free for all! On your end, all you need to do is make the pattern - no need to sweat the deadline, take your time!

Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along: Market Day Cardigan

Right now it's just sneak peeks - but I can tell you that this is a sleeveless open-front vest, made with 28 - 36 squares (depending on size). The construction is rather unique, and makes a topper that pairs perfectly with everything from jeans to dresses!

Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn

I went with the Aran-Cream colorway for a neutral look, but this yarn has so many great color options each sweater can be unique! Mix and match them for a custom look, or use another 4-worsted/medium-weight yarn to make your own 6" granny squares. And before it's too late, be sure to enter the Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn Giveaway!

Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn Colorways

So How Much Yarn per Size?

The Market Day Cardigan crochet pattern includes 3 sizes. All use the same hook size (more on that below). Be sure to note that this yarn does have a dye lot, and it's always best to buy a little extra than come up short right at the end! These numbers are best estimates - everyone's gauge is a little different. I'm finishing up this pattern as I write up this post, so this is currently the best estimate - I'll have more exact numbers soon, but I did try to err on the side of having a little left over. (amounts updated after publication)

    XS/S/M: 28 - 39" bust - 4 skeins

    L/XL/2XL: 40 - 51" bust - 5 skeins

    3XL/4XL/5XL: 52 - 62" bust - 6 skeins

The Hook for the Market Day Cardigan

For the hook, I will be using a Susan Bates US-H, 5.0 mm Twist and Lock hook. However, the most important thing is that you use the hook size that gets you 6" crochet granny squares after 5 rounds - whatever yarn you are using.  The hook size recommended for Red Heart Granny Square yarn is 5.5 mm, and I have to go down one size to get the right gauge. You may very well need to practice with this yarn a bit to figure out what hook size and techniques work best for you. Try a smaller hook if you tend to crochet loosely, or a larger hook if you tend to crochet tightly. Whatever hook size you land on, use that throughout the project.

The Schedule for the Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along

The pattern will be divided into three sections, and each section will be released on the remaining Tuesdays in January 2024, at 10am Central US time. As this CAL is now concluded, here are links to each of the parts:

    Here is the Schedule:

1st Part: Project Reveal and Make the Squares
    Video Tutorial for 1st Part
    2nd Part:
     Assemble and Edge the Squares
    Video Tutorial for 2nd Part

3rd Part: Add the Collar and Hem
    Video Tutorial for 3rd Part

Remember - there are no deadlines for finishing, and this one is not a race - jump on in when you're ready, and work at your own pace. You can also use this pattern for a crochet along at your local craft group!

Side split sc (left-handed) - insert the hook under just the right vertical strand of the indicated stitch through to the back of the fabric, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on hook.

    NOTES:

The pattern instructions are written for both sizes. When two different numbers are needed for the instructions based on size, they will be shown as Small(Large).

The main basket pattern switches from Rows to Rounds halfway through - at this point the numbering starts over. Count your Rounds by counting from the sides of the rows.

The Handle Covers, shown in Bernat Plush, are optional.

If you would prefer to substitute another stitch for this pattern be sure to check the handle placement for the second to last round.

While using a hook in the 15-16mm range will make tight stitches, be sure to also maintain a tight tension while crocheting this basket, pulling each slip stitch very tight at the end of the rounds. This can be fatiguing for the hands and arms, so also be sure to take some breaks for your hand health.

Divine Debris: Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features the delightful Amber Millard of Divine Debris! Amber creates graphic and gorgeous crochet patterns that are youthful and fun! Learn more about this talented crocheter, and get 5 free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

    A Bit About the Designer

Amber crochets some of the cutest stuff on my daily Instagram feed, and her designs were a frequent feature on The Loop Scoop! So I'm super excited to share her work and learn more about her in this Designer Showcase!

Here's a bit about Amber in her own words:

    Divine Debris Amber Millard

Hi! I’m Amber Millard, the designer behind Divine Debris. I’ve been designing for almost 10 years but my crochet journey started back when I was just a tiny human. My mother taught me how to crochet, with a Boye 4.00 mm hook and a skein of worsted weight yarn (it was variegated white, purple, and green and I vividly remember it). Like any overly ambitious 7-year-old, I decided to make a blanket. In a not-so-surprising turn of events, that blanket became my very first abandoned WIP. Luckily, it didn’t turn me off to crocheting forever and at about 25, I picked up a crochet hook again.

When I started crocheting again in my 20s I made basically everything I could and it wasn’t long before I started trying to make my own patterns. Through lots of trial and error (and so much frogging!) I started to figure some things out and found that designing really helped to scratch that itch that I, a lifelong art kid, absolutely needed in my life. And back in 2016 I discovered tapestry crochet and my goodness, it was like a light switched on and I knew I found something I really wanted to do.
I like to call it “painting with yarn” because for me it’s a very similar creative process to the drawing and painting I did when I was a teen. I usually sit down and “sketch” many graphs before I settle on one I really like and pull out my yarn. And thanks to social media, I’m seeing so many more people using tapestry, intarsia, and c2c than just a few years ago and they are making some beautiful crochet colorwork. It just makes me so happy for fiber artists.

In addition to crochet, I love to beer explore with my husband (where I often take my yarn with me), read as many books and comics as I can, and watch Bob’s Burgers from start to finish again.

Beginning MooglyCAL2024, and Wrapping Up MooglyCAL2023

December 29, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 215 Comments

Beginning MooglyCAL2024, and Wrapping Up MooglyCAL2023

The Moogly Crochet Along is now officially over 10 years long - and it's a go for MooglyCAL2024! MooglyCAL2023 was yet another year full of amazing squares, fantastic designs, and wonderful crocheters all supporting each other. For the past month, we've been joining and edging our squares and weaving in all our ends (maybe. ahem). Now, it's time to show off what we made in 2023, and plan MooglyCAL2024! In this post, you can see my finished 2023 afghan, see the colors I'll be using for 2024, and get the schedule and information you need to join in for the coming year!

Disclaimer: Materials provided by Yarnspirations; this post includes affiliate links.

Block 1 is up now - CLICK HERE to jump on in!

    Finishing MooglyCAL2023

As always, we've had 24 amazing designs by 24 talented designers! Every year I learn a new tip, trick, stitch, or technique - usually a few! It's such a joy to get to try all these patterns.

You can get the complete list of links to the squares on the post for Block 24! Or if you like to be able to see them all visually on one page, check out the MooglyCAL2023 Pinterest board!

And here's my finished blanket! And in a true shocker that just goes to show you never know what 2023 will bring... ALL my ends are woven in! I forced myself to do it as I went, and I really appreciated past-me when it was time to finish the border.

    MooglyCAL2023 Finished

For joining, I used the Tight Braid Join technique and the White yarn. Then I worked one border round with the White, working a sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-2 space, with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. For the second round of the border, I used Pewter and Light Gray to create a modified version of the border used in the Peppermint Swirl Pillow!

    MooglyCAL2024 Border Closeup

Here is how I adjusted this twisted crochet edging pattern to work on the straight edges:

With A, join to any st with sl st, ch 4. Remove hook and pull up the loop to make it larger so it will not unravel. Join B with sl st in next st. With B, ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. Ch 4. *Make loop larger and remove hook. Insert hook back into A loop. Bring ch-4 over ch-4 of B just worked to front. Skip next st. 1 sc in next st. Ch 4. Remove hook from A and insert into B loop. With B, bring ch-4 over ch-4 worked in A to front. 1 sc in next dc. Ch 4. Rep from * around. Join each color with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

This left just a little adjusting to at the corners - as I approached the corner space I would stop skipping stitches between the B sc and A sc, and I would work 2 of these sc sts in the corner ch sp. Easy peasy!

    How the MooglyCAL works

Block 1 is up now - CLICK HERE to jump on in!

If 2024 will be your first MooglyCAL, then welcome and we're so happy you're here! This is a year-long crochet along, featuring 24 afghan squares or blocks, designed by 24 different professional crochet designers. It started in 2014, and has been getting better every year! Is it the longest-running online crochet-along ever? I think it just might be!

The squares are released every 2 weeks with a post on Moogly, where I share my notes, my version, and helpful links and tutorials. There is a link to the new square at the bottom of my notes, where you can get it directly from the designer!

You can make them all, or pick and choose, add extras - it's up to you! There is nowhere you need to sign up to join, but there is a fantastic Facebook group for the CAL (lots of pattern help there!) and a MooglyCAL2024 Pinterest board you can follow if desired!

    Want to Get Notifications?

Leave a comment on this blog post and check "Notify me of new posts by email" before you hit submit, and you'll get an email any time there is a new post on Moogly. You can sign up for the free Moogly weekly newsletter at the top of this page - there's always a link to the latest MooglyCAL post included!

    The Yarn for MooglyCAL2024

This year I'll once again be using Red Heart With Love - it's my favorite for throws and blankets! But this year, I've tasked the designers with using their choice of With Love or Caron One Pound. Both are 4-Medium weight and are a good substitute for each other. And this way, they will have more colors to choose from - as do you!

Red Heart With Love vs Caron One Pound

This year, I decided to do some stash-busting! I'm going to go through my current collection of Red Heart With Love and create a beautiful rainbow. I'll be using the White again for the last round of each square and to help unify all the designs. We'll see how much is left at the end of the year!

My Red Heart With Love Stash

Of course, you should pick your own colors - however few or many you want! If you want 12" squares, make sure the yarn is a 4-Medium. If you prefer to use a DK or "3" weight yarn, the squares will likely be about 10" square.

On average, a 12" crochet square uses 150 yds of yarn. To make all 24 squares, plus have extra for joining and borders, I recommend purchasing 4420 yds of yarn total. How you distribute this is up to you! Some people use one color for the whole blanket, others a whole bunch, and some even just pull from stash making a crazy colored blanket! It's up to you!

    The Hook for MooglyCAL2024

For the hook, I will be using a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook for the Moogly Crochet Along, and all the designers will use the 6.0 mm hook of their preference. You can use a smaller hook if you tend to crochet loosely, or a larger hook if you tend to crochet tightly. But I do recommend that you use the same hook throughout the CAL, as that makes final joining easier, as your loops will be closer to the same size.

    Susan Bates Twist+Lock

    The Patterns for MooglyCAL2024

Block 1 is up now - CLICK HERE to jump on in!

As always, there will be 24 new patterns by 24 fab designers! We have a lot of names from last year, but we always add a couple new ones as others drop out! They are a surprise (to you - not me, haha!) until the square is announced. They are all hand-picked by me, and they have promised that their CAL patterns will remain forever free. If they close down their blogs, then the patterns are to be uploaded to Ravelry.

If a pattern pops up that isn't to your liking, feel free to skip it! You can go back to the previous years' CALs and find a substitute you'd like to try or pick one of your own from the thousands of beautiful afghan squares out there. There is often a lot of inspiration for these in the Facebook Group! We are grateful to all the designers for their hard work and generosity!

The easiest way to visually browse past year's patterns is via their Pinterest boards: MooglyCAL2023, MooglyCAL2022, MooglyCAL2021, MooglyCAL2020, MooglyCAL2019, MooglyCAL2018, MooglyCAL2017, MooglyCAL2016, and MooglyCAL2015. This year's squares will be on a new board: MooglyCAL2024 Pinterest Board

    MooglyCAL Pinterest Boards

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. This year I *may* make some additional videos, but we have to play it by ear as each square is designed.

In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern.

In other words - you don't have to already know how to read patterns to participate in this CAL, but you do need to be willing to learn how!

    The Schedule for MooglyCAL2024

The squares are released every two weeks throughout the year, on Thursday mornings at 10am Central US time. We begin in January, and then the last square debuts one day early - the day before American Thanksgiving! (It's a late Thanksgiving this year, heads up!)

This gives you a chance to grab the pattern before the holiday, and it gives you the entire month of December to join and edge your blanket. The joining and edging patterns are up to you, but there are lists of both on Moogly provided along with the CAL for inspiration.

    Here is the MooglyCAL2024 Schedule:

    January 11 and 25
    February 8 and 22
    March 7 and 21
    April 4 and 18
    May 2, 16, and 30
    June 13 and 27
    July 11 and 25
    August 8 and 22
    September 5 and 19
    October 3, 17, and 31
    November 14 and 27

Block 1 is up now - CLICK HERE to jump on in!

What Can You Make with the MooglyCAL2024

What can you do with 24 afghan squares? CLICK HERE to see some fantastic possibilities! Here are the most common blanket options:

    4 blocks x 6 blocks - 4' x 6' afghan
    3 blocks x 4 blocks - 2 3' x 4' baby blankets
    add an extra square - 5' x 5' afghan

    How to Join the MooglyCAL2024!

So what do you need to do next? First, be sure to join the Facebook group and follow the Pinterest board if desired! Then, sign up for the newsletter and/or check the box and comment to make sure you don't miss a square!

After that, it's time to go get your yarn! If you choose a yarn that doesn't have dye lots, you can purchase it as you go through the year. But most yarns you'll want to get matching dye lots for, so I recommend buying it all at once if possible.

Finally, look for the first square to debut here on Moogly on January 11, 2023! I can't wait to share it with you! As you make your squares, feel free to share photos in the Facebook group, or on social media - and don't forget to use the tags #MooglyCAL2024, #mooglyblog and #yarnspo!

    NOTES:

To create the color layout shown, please see the yarn list above to see which end of the skein to pull from in each color. For other colors, you'll need to decide which end to pull from to get the look desired. The yarn used for this hat was left over after making the Big Checked Crochet Scarf.

If you would prefer to not use the FDC stitch, you can instead work Row 1 as follows: With Color B ch 9, with Color A ch 9, skip the ch closest to the hook, sc in next ch, dc in next 8 chs, with Color B dc in last 9 chs; turn. (18 sts)

If you would prefer to not use the CSDC and/or STDC stitch, you can use a ch 3 or dc substitute of your choice. Instead of STSC, (join with a sl st, ch 1, and sc) in the indicated st.

When switching colors, finish the last st of the previous st with the new color.

This pattern is worked with 2 colors in each row. Leave each color hanging from its last stitch unless otherwise instructed, and pick it back up for that color in the next row.

Be sure to weave in all ends into the same colored stitches.

Always skip the top of a stitch that a post stitch is worked around to avoid increasing the stitch count.

    Wilmade: Designer Showcase

December 13, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 1 Comment

    Wilmade: Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features the fabulous Wilma Westenburg of Wilmade! Wilma is a phenomenal designer and a wonderful person - one you should definitely be following! Learn more about this talented crocheter, and get 5 free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

    A Bit About the Designer

I was lucky enough to meet Wilma a few years ago - we both had to travel to NYC for that to happen! But she was such a lovely person, and I've enjoyed seeing her designs and her amazing work with Story Shawls over the years. So I'm so excited to share her work and learn more about her in this Designer Showcase!

Here's a bit about Wilma in her own words:

    Wilmade: Designer Showcase on Moogly

I am Wilma Westenberg, a 29-year-old crochet designer from the Netherlands. My crochet journey began at the age of 22. Now, seven years later, it has evolved into more than just a hobby; it's become my full-time job and passion.

In my early weeks as a crocheter, I learned the ropes through online photo and video tutorials. Soon, I was able to create my own patterns, which I share for free on my website.

My main focus is on sweaters (sizes up to 5XL), shawls, and squares. For the past three years, I've dedicated myself to a special Tulip Square collection, comprised of projects made out of squares.

I love making videos on social media showcasing the simplicity of my patterns. People often think crocheting sweaters is complicated, but my videos demonstrate that it's actually quite easy.

I am also working on a lifelong project: designing Story Shawls inspired by people with the same rare medical condition. Only a handful of people worldwide share this diagnosis with me, and each year, I find one or two new peers through social media.

When I'm not crocheting, I'm traveling with my husband, actively seeking and visiting 'extended family' who share the same rare medical condition as me. Being a huge fan of the USA, I make it a priority to visit the USA at least once a year - and of course, as I return home, my suitcase is filled with yarn from Michael's and Joann's.

Crochet Puzzle Fun!: Review and Giveaway on Moogly

Crochet Puzzle Fun! is a fantastic new large print book by Debbie Deitke! Labeled "the Ultimate Crochet Theme Puzzle Book with 150+ Puzzles," it's perfect for winding down between projects! Get a peek inside below, and then enter to win your own copy on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Crochet Puzzle Fun! Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Author Debbie Deitke

I've had the pleasure of meeting Debbie in person, and she's just lovely! And very enthusiastic about crochet and puzzling - it's been a real pleasure helping to spread the word about all her books so far - this is her fourth! From her author page:

"Debbie recognizes that even the most passionate crafters take a break from their projects. By combining her hobbies and love for puzzles, Debbie is focused on creating entertaining fun for crafters. Whether it be on vacation, riding in a car, or when you have a few moments of quiet time, discover how deeply rewarding craft-themed puzzles can be. "

Taking a Peek Inside Crochet Puzzle Fun!

It's hard to share too much of a puzzle book... without sharing *too* much! But I can tell you there are over 14 different types of puzzles inside! They are divided into two sections: Word Puzzles, and Picture Puzzles. The final section is the answer key!

Crochet Puzzle Fun - Table of Contents

Most of these puzzle types are familiar - word search, crosswords, logic puzzles, mazes, hidden objects, and spot the difference. But there are some more unusual puzzles as well! Have you ever tried Wordoku, Nonograms, or Cryptograms? I love the variety!

Sample Puzzle from Crochet Puzzle Fun!

Overall, I think Crochet Puzzle Fun is even better than its predecessors! The large print is so much nicer than trying to see tiny words and squares on my phone, and the crochet theme makes it extra fun! While there aren't official coloring pages, the high-quality paper and print beg for a new pencil or marker set and a snowy afternoon.

Sample Puzzle from Crochet Puzzle Fun!

This book is the perfect stocking stuffer or gift for the yarn puzzle lover in your life. And don't forget to get one for yourself too! I look forward to settling in with this book over the holiday break!

    Is Lenny in the Room?

In the world of crochet, the scarf stands as a timeless accessory, effortlessly combining style and functionality. However, for those seeking a touch of uniqueness and a cozy embrace, this large crocheted checked scarf is the must-try project this season. The super scarf trend started with Mr. Kravitz's extraordinary brown muffler, but there's a lot to recommend them! A giant scarf is perfect for looking chic and staying warm this winter. Wrap it up in any style you like - there's enough fabric here to let you wear it however you like, and look great doing it. And it's a scarf - so if you want it longer or shorter, it's easy to adjust for a custom fit!

    NOTES:

To create the color layout shown, please see the yarn list above to see which end of the skein to pull from in each color. For other colors, you'll need to decide which end to pull from to get the look desired.

If you would prefer to not use the FDC stitch, you can instead work Row 1 as follows: With Color C ch 11, with Color B ch 11, with Color A ch 13, skip the 3 chs closest to the hook (counts as first dc), dc in next 10 chs, with Color B dc in next 11 chs, with Color C dc in last 11 chs; turn. (33 sts)

If you would prefer to not use the CSDC and/or STDC stitch, you can use a ch 3 or dc substitute of your choice.

When switching colors, finish the last st of the previous st with the new color.

This pattern is worked with 3 colors in each row. Leave each color hanging from its last stitch unless otherwise instructed, and pick it back up for that color in the next row.

Be sure to weave in all ends into the same colored stitches.

To change the length of the scarf, simply eliminate or add 6-row stripe sections as desired.

To change the width, use a larger or smaller number of stitches, divisible by 3.

    Exploring Tunisian Crochet Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Lori Harrison of Aklori Designs

Lori's work is new to me, but it is lovely! Here's her official author blurb:

"Lori Harrison is the Tunisian crochet designer behind Aklori Designs. She has been creating Tunisian crochet garments and accessories that (are) thoughtfully designed, size inclusive, and enjoyable to make since 2017. Come explore with her at @akloridesigns and akloridesigns.com."

Taking a Peek Inside Exploring Tunisian Crochet

From the back of the book:

"Whether you are completely new to Tunisian crochet or you already love it and are ready to move beyond the basic stitches, Exploring Tunisian Crochet has the step-by-step instructions you need to master any Tunisian crochet technique. Photo tutorials for basic stitches and advanced stitches (for both left- and right-handed crocheters) get you started on the road to success. Complete your education with expert tips and techniques.

Once you've practiced the stitches, you'll be ready to crochet any of the 20 stunning patterns for shawls, scarves, hats, and more. You'll be amazed at the versatility of Tunisian fabrics you can make with the variety of stitches in this book, from lacy shawls with beautiful drape to stretchy hats and mittens and color work shawls and scarves. The advanced crochet stitches you'll learn open a whole new world of possibilities!"

    Learn How to Tunisian Crochet

They aren't kidding about step-by-step instructions! Fully the first third of the book is all about learning Tunisian crochet. While it's helpful to have prior crochet experience (and knitting, for that matter), none is required. The photos show each moment in nice bright pictures.

Exploring Tunisian Crochet: Review and Giveaway - Moogly

Lori starts with a discussion of the tools needed, and takes us all the way from foundation rows, and hits each stitch through simple stitch to full stitch. Finally, she wraps up this section with increases, decreases, color changes, and finishing techniques.

    Try Tunisian Crochet with Patterns

The rest of the book is filled with 20 lovely patterns, divided into three difficulty levels:

Exploring Tunisian Crochet: Review and Giveaway - Moogly

Each pattern I looked at included the yarn, hook size, and gauge, as well as a schematic with measurements. Again, when it comes to pattern reading, prior crochet experience or knit experience will be helpful. While the stitches are given the standard Tunisian stitch names, it still helps to know how to parse pattern syntax and formatting. If you're new though, do not fret! There is a whole section on reading patterns starting on page 53! Be sure to bookmark page 56 for quick stitch reference as you work the patterns.

Exploring Tunisian Crochet: Review and Giveaway - Moogly

Overall, I think Exploring Tunisian Crochet is great introduction to Tunisian crochet, and a fun pattern book for those who already know the skill! Some of the stitches and techniques are more advanced, so it's also wonderful for those ready to go to the next level. The patterns are lovely and offer a challenge for anyone at any level.

    Striped Christmas Mosaic Square

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring both 2 and 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors!

    The Details (and Going Forward!)

My Notes: As mentioned, this is our last square for 2023 - but this crochet along will continue into 2024! I will be going LIVE on November 30 on the Moogly YouTube Channel to show all the ways you can combine your squares to make blankets, pillows, and even bags! Then, on December 29, I will go live again to share my (hopefully) finished blanket, and the schedule and info for 2024! In the meantime, click here for some joining ideas, and free border crochet patterns! Remember, how you finish up your blanket is up to you, and your chance to make it your own!

The Striped Christmas Mosaic Square is just right for ending our year! This design is pretty in holiday colors, but not a "holiday square" otherwise. Made in center-out mosaic it is interesting, but not difficult. Great for both crochet beginners and mosaic lovers, this one works up in just an evening or two. All that said, this pattern uses non-standard pattern writing format and a few unique abbreviations. Be sure to read all the notes before you begin! But don't be intimidated - there's also a tutorial video!

I chose to carry my 3 colors along rather than breaking the yarn every round. This did lead to just a little bit of "peek through" but saved over a dozen ends. If you prefer a cleaner look, try breaking the yarn and seamless finishing each round before joining with the first stitch of the next round.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, BLO Back Loop Only and FLO Front Loop Only, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written after Rnd 19.

    Rnd 1: White
    Rnd 2:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 3: White
    Rnd 4:
    Pewter
    Rnd 5:
    White
    Rnd 6:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 7:
    White
    Rnds 8:

    Rnd 9: White
    Rnd 10:

    Rnd 11:

    Rnd 12:

    Rnd 13:

    Rnd 14:

    Rnd 15:

    Rnd 17:

    Rnd 18:

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

    Bernat Plush Big

"Bernat Plush Big is the perfect yarn for your fast and long-lasting home decor projects. The soft, squishy velour shell adds a unique clean, pillowy texture that can be used for both traditional knit and crochet projects or to table knit with just your hands. The thick yarn means you can make projects in a flash and with a combination of high stitch definition and thick gauge you will look like a pro showing off intricate-looking stitch definition.

Bernat Plush Big features a range of playful colors across a dimmer base. Choose from Off White, Caramel, and Pewter to create cozy projects wrapped in warmth. For a cooler tone, choose from Foggy Teal and Elderberry. When creating bolder projects, try the shade, Khaki Green. Wrap yourself in a soft pillowy texture ideal for your next home decor projects."

Make the Winter Market Bag as Part of the 2023 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along!

    2023 Holiday Stashdown

How the 2023 Holiday Stashdown CAL Works

Every Monday and Thursday from October 2 through December 14, 2023, CLICK HERE to find a new free crochet pattern by a different designer. Each pattern will be a one-skein project, or a stashbuster/scrappy project, so you can work from your own existing yarn stash to make a great winter holiday gift, decoration, or wrap. If you’d like to go ahead and buy some yarn just for the project, we won’t stop you! We love yarn as much as you do.

How To Join the 2023 Holiday Stashdown CAL

    • Sign up for Crochet Along updates and the Underground Crafter newsletter to get regular updates, including links to new CAL patterns as they are released. When you sign up, you’ll also get access to my subscriber vault which includes exclusive free PDF patterns, a coupon code for your choice of any crochet or knitting pattern or ebook from my Ravelry shop, and coupon codes from other indie designers and crafts businesses.
    • You can join in by crocheting the patterns as you have time.
    • Share your progress and post pictures of your finished projects. Tag your projects and posts #CALCentralCrochet and #HolidayStashdownCAL on all social media.
    • If you’d like to chat with other crocheters, join the CAL Central Crochet Facebook group, or visit this thread in the CAL Central Ravelry group.
    • By the end of the CAL, you’ll have up to 22 gifts, decorations, or gift wrap projects for the winter holidays.

Grab your favorite shades of Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing

One of the rules for the Holiday Stashdown is that we could only use 1 skein of yarn (or less than 100 yards). And that seems like the perfect opportunity to try out Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing! Each cake of this chenille yarn is carefully constructed to ensure a seamless transition from one shade to another - amazing!

One cake of this fab yarn will make you a fun and fluffy bag perfect for making, gifting, and wearing to explore your local shops this season! There is even a bit left over for yet another stash-busting opportunity. I really loved using Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing for this free crochet pattern!

Winter Market Bag made with Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing

Prefer a solid color look? One skein of standard Bernat Blanket should do it.  Prefer more color variety? Grab all your leftover bits of Bernat Blanket and mix and match! No matter your color, your 8mm crochet hook and stitch markers are the only crochet tools you need. (Do scissors and a yarn needle count - them too!)

    Prefer a Bigger "Squares" Bag?

There are patterns out there calling for more - or fewer - squares to make up a bag. This crochet bag uses 17 squares, but I've seen bags using anywhere from 10 to 32! There is enough yarn left over to make about 8-10 more squares, if you'd like to follow a different plan for joining. Just be sure to leave enough to make the handle of your choice! And remember, the Snowflake Dangle is completely optional, so you can leave it off or add something else to personalize it just for you!Winter Market Bag - Moogly
