Long Cat Door Draft Stopper - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Create Your Custom Cat Door Draft Stopper

Draft stoppers are a handy and practical item come the winter months - but not too big to crochet, making them great for year-round making! By exploring the range of Bernat Blanket yarn, you can create a Long Cat Door Draft Stopper to match your cat! There are so many colors, including multis, and even pink and purple ombres if you want to go wild!

Long Cat Door Draft Stopper - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

This pattern looks like a simple long tube - and that's basically what it is. But I've included some special touches to make it more fun to crochet! For instance, the only sewing you do with this pattern is adding the button to the bottom, and an optional "cat booty" with less than 12" of Bernat Maker. The ears, paws, and tail are all stitched within their rows, and the color changes stay straight and even because we work in turned rounds, aka joined rows.

Long Cat Door Draft Stopper - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

To fill the Long Cat, I used a standard sized draft stopper that I found on Amazon. Since the crochet cover closes with a button, you are able to remove and launder the Long Cat as needed! Spruce up your ugly old draft stopper with a cute new cover you crochet!

    Notes:

This pattern uses Turned Rounds, aka Joined Rows. This means that we are working in the round, joining the last stitch of each round to the first stitch with a slip stitch. However, we then turn and work the next round in the opposite direction. This means that odd numbered rounds are all on the Right Side, or outside of the piece. Even numbered rounds are all worked from the "inside" of the piece, or the Wrong Side. Using stitch markers in the first and last stitch of each round is very helpful.

For Rnds 9 - 59, when you are working with both colors, stitch over the Color A strand tapestry style when stitching with Color B. Then, drop the Color B end so you can come back to it on the next rnd.

    Special Stitch:

Ear Bobble - (dc, dc, tr, dc, dc tog) Yarn over and insert hook into indicated st, yo and pull through first two loops (2 loops rem on hook), yarn over and insert hook into same st, yo and pull through first two loops (3 loops rem on hook), yarn over twice and insert hook into same st, yo and pull through first two loops twice (4 loops rem on hook), yarn over and insert hook into same st, yo and pull through first two loops (5 loops rem on hook), yarn over and insert hook into same st, yo and pull through first two loops (6 loops rem on hook), yo and pull through all 6 loops to finish st.

Long Cat Door Draft Stopper Instructions:

Rnd 1 [RS]: With Color A make a magic circle, ch 1, work 10 hdc in the ring; join and turn. (10 hdc)

Rnd 2 [WS]: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first 2 sts, (ear bobble, hdc) in next st, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, (ear bobble, hdc) in next st, 2 hdc in last 2 sts; join and turn. (20 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; rep from * until 2 sts rem, hdc in last 2 sts, join and turn. (26 hdc)

Rnds 4 - 8: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join and turn.

STOP AND ADD the FACE to the Long Cat Door Draft Stopper

Add the Safety Eyes to Round 6, with about 4 sts in between (see image below). The face is on the opposite side from the join and turn seam.

Add the Safety Nose to Round ⅞, centered between the eyes.

Long Cat Door Draft Stopper - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Finishing the Long Cat Door Draft Stopper

Optional: Use the Bernat Maker to add an asterisk, or * to the front of the last row, to represent a little cat booty.

Use the sewing thread and needle to sew the button to the inside front of the piece, opposite the tail.

To assemble, tie up the hanging string (if present) on one end of the draft stopper. Insert this end into the piece, and shake it down like a pillow case. Then, close the end by putting the button through the small hole at the base of the tail.

Remove the draft stopper for laundering.

    Effortless 12 Inch Square

    by The Stitchin' Mommy

MooglyCAL2024 Block 15 Courtesy of The Stitchin' Mommy

Above you can see the square that Amy  made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my last Evergreen one as I work through the rainbow!)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 15

My Notes: The Effortless 12 Inch Square is, indeed, the perfect square to relax with! The well-written instructions are easy to follow, and once you've got the "idea" you're off and running.  One small change I did make was using front post extended double crochet stitches in place of the front post double crochets for the last 2-3 rounds. This prevented the sides from pulling in, and gave me nice straight edges - after blocking.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Standing Double Crochet, Post Stitches, Extended Double Crochet Stitch, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Color A: Evergreen
    B:
    White
    C:
    Light Gray

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

Is Latch Hooking New to You?

I was lucky enough to learn how to latch hook as a small child in the 1970s/80s. I remember my mom working on a giant sunset... maybe I should ask her if she ever finished it! But the point is, it really is super easy and you an learn how to latch hook in minutes - even a child can do it!

While I haven't gotten to use one of the Bernat Latch It Kits yet, I did teach a Michaels class in 2021 demonstrating how to use a Latch Hook kit! While the Bernat Latch It Kits feature modern, up to date designs, the technique itself is unchanged!

Top Down Hats That Fit with babé Crochet Hat Templates

July 17, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 34 Comments

Top Down Hats That Fit with babé Crochet Hat Templates

If you've been following Moogly for a while, you've seen me talk about babé crochet Hat Templates! They are perfect for making sure crochet and knit hats fit everyone, every time. Designed for stocking caps or beanies, I recently used them to help create the Casual Crochet Bucket Hat! Check out this amazing tool for all hat makers, and enter to win a set here on Moogly - we're giving away TWO full sets this time!

Disclaimer: This giveaway is sponsored by babé crochet. All opinions are my own.

New to the babé crochet Hat Templates?

Whether you've switched to bucket hats for summer, or on a Christmas in July kick, these templates will make it easier and stress-free! Here are the templates in action!

babé crochet hat templates tell you how big (or small) to make your hats to fit every size - no math or tape measures needed! Here's a video I made on TikTok with more info on how they work. It was for a previous giveaway... but this one is just the same, with a later date!

@mooglyblog babé crochet hat templates are a life saver. 3 sets need new homes, anywhere in the world, but only until November 28, 2023 😉🌏🥳 @babecrochetco #mooglyblog #crochet #hats #crochethats #learntocrochet #fyp ♬ Chill Day - LAKEY INSPIRED

These are genuinely ridiculously easy to use. Working your hat top-down (crown to brim), put the center of your first round over the hole. Then, you match the size of your flat circle to the top of the curve. Once that is achieved, work even until it's the length of the template. This works for bucket hats too - for a looser fit, I just went a hair over the circle size!

Making a Bucket Hat with babé crochet Hat Templates

No more consulting endless charts or trying it on over and over again - or worse yet, just hoping! Instead, you can grab the template for the size of the hat you're making and toss it in your project bag. If you crochet for a big family - or craft fairs - you can put together a set of templates with your most needed sizes to whip them up faster than ever! Great for all your holiday travel and vacations!

    Babé Crochet Hat Templates

By Once, Use It for Life

I've been using them for years - ever since I first learned about them! And I can tell that the set I have will last my entire crochet career, and keep getting used. These hat templates are made from strong plastic and each is embossed with its "Tool Number." You can see how these work on the chart below. You'll get a chart with each set, as well as a wire ring to keep the templates and chart organized, and a tutorial on how to use the templates.

    Block #14:

    The Atom Square

    by Golden Lucy Crafts

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 14 Courtesy of Golden Lucy Crafts

Above you can see the square that Olena made, featuring 2 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my second Evergreen one as I work through the rainbow!)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 14

My Notes: The  Atom Square bursts with rings of color and texture, bringing your blanket vision to life! Bobbles and lots of color changes hold the attention, and the well written instructions make it easy to recreate. I will say that Rnd 7 might have you scratching your head and second-guessing the instructions - trust them! It does work! My square was a little bit small, but one extra round of half double crochet got me to 12".

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Bobble, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Standing Half Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was only at 11", so I added an extra rnd, repeating Rnd 14.

    Rnd 1: White
    Rnd 2:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 3:
    Evergreen
    Rnd 4:
    White
    Rnd 5:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 6:
    Evergreen
    Rnd 7: White
    Rnd 8:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 9:
    Evergreen
    Rnd 10 and 11: White
    Rnd 12:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 13:
    Evergreen
    Rnd 14: White
    Extra Rnd for Size: White

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

    Casual Crochet Bucket Hat

July 5, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 7 Comments

Casual Crochet Bucket Hat - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly!

The Casual Crochet Bucket Hat is a breathable, easy-to-wear summer hat - made with Bernat Maker to match the Casual Bag Set! It's a reader request, and I love the way it turned out. And of course, it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

Continuing the Texture with Bernat Maker

To crochet the Casual Crochet Bucket Hat, I used Bernat Maker yarn. Bernat Maker inspired the Casual Crossbody Bag, Pouch, and Sunglasses Case, and those inspired a request for a matching Bucket Hat! I used the same stitches, and the leftover bits of yarn for a matching set - but this will look fantastic in solid colors too. And then it's a one-skein pattern!

Casual Crochet Bucket Hat and Bag Set

Maker features a cotton shell, and here I've worked it with a smaller-than-recommended hook. This gives the Bucket Hat its shape, and creates a fabric with intentional breathability across the top. It has a soft cotton feel that's gentle to the touch, and it provides durability and stability thanks to its nylon core. With all the gorgeous colors, you can make them to match all your summer outfits!

A Looser Fit and A Trendy Look!

Bucket hats are a hot look for summer - and there are a few new ones coming out every year! The Casual Crochet Bucket Hat is the first one I've designed, but not the first one I've made. The others have all featured a tighter fit, more akin to a stocking cap.

Casual Crochet Bucket Hat - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

For this hat, I wanted a looser fit, which I prefer for hot weather, so I used standard hdc stitches for a more open weave. For the sides, I used the hhdc stitches so that we have that great texture. And then the brim alternates for a fun striping effect!

Casual Crochet Bucket Hat - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly!

It won't stick to your head, it won't crush your hair, and the brim keeps the sun off your face and out of your eyes. We know crochet is self-care already... but here it's health care too!

    Reader Requested - and Tested!

I'm excited to say that this pattern was a reader request from Shellie Shaffner, who very kindly emailed me - and agreed to test the pattern before its release, catching a typo I had made. Thank you so much, Shellie! Shellie's friend JJ agreed to model it, and I think it looks great in the Fawn colorway!

Shellie did share that she needed to go down one hook size to get gauge, so be sure to make a gauge swatch (or try it on as you go... I know how it goes haha)!

    What Is Warm Up America?

    Warm Up America

Warm Up America is one of my favorite yarn-related charities. Last month, I designed the Moroccan Tile Rectangle - perfect for making and donating! These rectangles are assembled into blankets and donated - but of course, funds are needed to keep it running!

Moroccan Tile Rectangle Warm Up America on Moogly

"Warm Up America! (WUA!) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1991 by Evie Rosen with the mission of mobilizing volunteers to knit and crochet afghans and clothing for those in need. The organization achieves its mission through several key initiatives:

    • Promotion and Training: WUA! promotes, trains, and encourages both individuals and groups to participate in its program at a local level. By spreading awareness and providing guidance, the organization fosters a community of volunteers dedicated to its cause.
    • Support Services: The foundation offers support and assistance to local volunteers by providing them with essential information and instructional materials. These resources empower volunteers to effectively contribute to WUA!'s efforts.
    • Collection and Assembly: WUA! serves as a central collection point for the knitted and crocheted sections contributed by volunteers. The organization oversees the assembly of these sections into completed blankets and garments.
    • Distribution: Once the items are assembled, WUA! coordinates with various charitable organizations and agencies to distribute them to homeless individuals and others in need. This ensures that the handmade items reach those who can benefit from them the most.

Through these initiatives, Warm Up America! continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals facing hardship by providing warmth, comfort, and support."

Colorful Crochet Cables and Crochet Stars Books Giveaway

Colorful Crochet Cables and Crochet Stars Books Giveaway

This one is a two-fer! Colorful Crochet Cables by Noelle R. B. Stiles, and Crochet Stars by Noreen Crone-Findlay, are two fantastic brand new books debuting in July 2024! Get a peek inside both books below, and then enter to win your own copies, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Colorful Crochet Cables Review

    A Bit About the Author

Colorful Crochet Cables This looks to be the first book by author Noelle R. B. Stiles, but you might know her site, Rebecca’s Stylings, or have purchased some of her amazing patterns from her Etsy Shop! She does a LOT more than crochet, however!

"Noelle R. B. Stiles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at New Jersey Medical School. She is a core member of the Center for Advanced Human Brain Imaging Research within the Brain Health Institute at Rutgers. She was a vision research scientist at the University of Southern California in the Department of Ophthalmology for over 5 years, and earned a doctorate in Neuroscience from the Computation and Neural Systems Program at the California Institute of Technology.

Dr. Stiles has always been artistically as well as scientifically inclined (perhaps inherited from her artist paternal grandmother and math-teacher maternal grandmother). She has been crocheting for two decades and designing award-winning crochet items for over eight years. She was the winner in the Baby Category for the 2017 Herrschners Grand National Afghan Contest. Under her designer label, Rebecca’s Stylings (rebeccasstylings.com), she has designed patterns for Red Heart Yarns, and has published over 150 crochet patterns on Love Crafts, WeCrochet, Ravelry, and Etsy. The focus of her fiber art is complex Aran-style cabling made with standard crochet stitches. This texture-rich fabric created in bright modern colors is the perfect canvas for her intricate yet intuitive designs."

Now let's dive into Colorful Crochet Cables!

    Inside Colorful Crochet Cables

Colorful Crochet Cables: How to Crochet Celtic Cabled Designs in Vibrant Multicolored Hues features Noelle's amazing talent with complex and beautiful cable design. The book includes 20 designs - scarves, shawls, sweaters, pillows, blanket, gloves, hats, totes, and more. But the patterns don't start until you're 70 pages in...

    Colorful Crochet Cables

Remember all that stuff about how Noelle is really smart, working in the Department of Neurology at Rutgers, in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science? The first half of this book is a deep dive into the science of color, from illusions to dye lots! Then there's a section on Crochet Texture, which frankly, is a masterclass all on it's own. I'm going to be spending some serious time with this book.

    Colorful Crochet Cables

But it keeps going! There are chapters on Texture and Shadow in One Color, Multicolored Yarns with Multi-Textured Patterns, Color Gradient Yarns, Speckled Yarns, and Stranded Colorwork. And there's even a whole chapter of Tips, Colorways, and Swatches!

    Colorful Crochet Cables

And then, finally, we're on to the patterns - and it's just as fabulous as the first half of the book. In Colorful Crochet Cables' patterns, you'll find all the details you'll need for success, from video tutorial links to charts, to clearly written instructions and closeup photos. This book is a pattern book and crochet reference book all in one!

    Colorful Crochet Cables

    Inez Floral Granny Square

    by Underground Crafter

Above you can see the square that Marie made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my first Evergreen one as I work through the rainbow!)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 13

My Notes: The Inez Floral Granny Square features a ton of texture, and coordinates so beautifully with our other square so far this year! I did skip one round for size, and I've included that info below. With Marie's great step by step photos, I am sure we'll see a bunch of beautiful blocks in the group!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Bobble, Post Stitches, BLO (Back Loop Only), Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Standing Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was getting a bit big, so I skipped Round 16 and worked Round 17 simply as back loop only single crochet.

    Color A: White
    Color B:
    Evergreen
    Color C:
    Light Gray

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    The Pattern:

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

    Yin-Yang Cat Bed

Yin-Yang Cat Bed - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Yin-Yang Cat Bed is an oversized pet bed, perfect for cats and small dogs - or one really big cat! Made with Bernat Blanket, it's sure to be a favorite of any feline friend, and encourage piles of peaceful kitty cuddles. And it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Black and White and Cozy All Over

Inspired by the traditional Yin-Yang symbol (and my daughter's two cats), this pet bed looks great in any two colors - you don't have to stick to just black and white! This cat and dog bed features a round shape that offers a safe, cozy place for your pet to snooze, and soft walls to promote security. This border is created by a simple fabric fold over, making the Yin-Yang Cat Bed easy to throw in the washer and dryer!

This 22" inch pet bed is the right size for a couple of cats or a small dog - or more, if they like to share! My daughter (frequent Moogly model) has two cats of her own, and they have been loving their new bed!

    Cats Love Bernat Blanket Yarn

I didn't realize when I made my first cat bed... but cats love Bernat Blanket yarn! At least, all the cats I've encountered so far! My daughter's cats, her friends' cats, and as many of you have told me, your cats too love this yarn! It's super soft, very warm, and it holds up to their love and use!

Yin-Yang Cat Bed - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

And big bonus, it's washable and dryable! I specifically designed the Yin-Yang Cat Bed to be super easy to care for. There is no stuffing, and Bernat Blanket is machine washable and dryable - and I recommend that's how you treat this project! Make it, let them use, and you can all love it!

    NOTES:

Rounds 1 - 15 of the Base of this pattern are made using turned rounds. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round, and then turn to work in the other direction. Put a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each round to make this easier.

When changing colors when making the Base, finish the last stitch of the old color with the new color yarn. Leave each color hanging so you can come back to it without cutting the yarn. This is why we work in turned rounds. The colors will line up, without cutting the yarn or crocheting over it.

The Circles of this pattern are made in spirals. Do not join with a slip stitch at the end of each round, and do not turn. Put a stitch marker in the first stitch or each round to make this easier.

2: Use the long tails of the Circles to backstitch the Circles onto the Base.

3: Fold the Base at Rnd 20, towards the outside of the bed. (Unfold to wash and dry.)

    Crochet Monsters Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Megan Lapp, author

Author Megan Lapp runs the Etsy shop Crafty Intentions, and it's full of fantastical designs, just like the ones seen in her books.

"Megan Lapp got her BA with a double-major in Art and Music from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and hasn't stopped creating since. Her current work spans many artistic media, including crochet, sculpture, painting, and various fiber arts. She works daily in her studio. Megan lives with her husband, 13 year old son, and 11 year old daughter in Pennsylvania. In her spare time, Megan enjoys singing, playing piano, and doing all the voices when reading to her kids.

Megan won the Makezine Me, My Scarf and I Singer Contest in 2009 for an original scarf design. Her handmade plushes were a reward for the Kickstarter for Epyllion, A Dragon Epic, in 2015. She was a runner-up in the worldwide Amigurumi Patterns design contest in 2017 for her Original Dragon Pattern design. Megan has been publishing original patterns on Etsy and Ravelry since 2017."

Her shop is full of delights - and sure to make your dreams soar! There are dozens of wonderful creatures, but there are also a couple of shawls that are the kind of costume pieces you wish you could wear every day and live your own magical fairy tale!

Never Make the Same Monster Twice

This might be one of the thickest crochet books I own! At a whopping 360 pages, there is so much to explore!

Crochet Monsters - Book Giveaway on Moogly

"With more than 35 Monster body options, plus myriad variations for limbs, mouths and teeth, horns, antennae, tails, scales, and so much more, you will never make the same Monster twice. Choose from wide open mouths with fangs to adorable Monsters with bunny ears and a cat tail to Monsters with hair poufs and scales. Make one-eyed spiders or three-eyed aliens, dragons with scales or little friends that don’t match any known monster to date. There is nearly no limit to the variations you can combine!"

Crochet Monsters - and a Monster Giveaway!

Debuting just this month, Crochet Monsters is a choose-your-own-adventure style book that feeds your imagination and creativity. You start by picking the body - open mouth, blob style, cylinder, egg shaped, square, or eyeball - there are a bunch for each!

Crochet Monsters - and a Monster Giveaway!

Then, it's time to pick your eyes! Choose your mouth, feet, limbs, scales, tails, ears, antennae, and horns!

    Inside Crochet Monsters

The vast majority of crochet pattern books include pages of "how to crochet" type info and other extras. This book, despite its length, dives right in!

Crochet Monsters - and a Monster Giveaway!

There are just a few extra pages, with all the important info. There's a section that explains how to use the book, and details on supplies. After a few great tips and tricks, there's a handy Monster Planning Sheet you'll want to make copies of.

Crochet Monsters - and a Monster Giveaway!

Of course, there are a few pages with all the abbreviations used and their definitions. Then it's time to dive in on the patterns - I counted 165 different bits to mix and match! Wow!

Crochet Monsters - and a Monster Giveaway!

All the projects in Crochet Monsters are made with worsted/medium/4 weight yarn, although the teeth are shown in sport/2 weight. Megan used 4mm and 3.25mm crochet hooks, and safety eyes ranging from 24 - 40 mm. There are a few other unique supplies she recommends, including fiberfill, wire, and plastic canvas - but it just depends on who and what you decide to make!

Crochet Monsters - and a Monster Giveaway!

I don't know how she does it - Megan just keeps them coming! There's even a sneak peek teaser in the back of this book - I can't wait to see what's coming next!

    Blooming Bobbles Square

    by Stitches n Scraps

    MooglyCAL2024 - Block 12 courtesy of Stitches n Scraps

Above you can see the square that Pia made, featuring up to 4 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my final Lettuce one as I work through the rainbow!)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 12

My Notes: The Blooming Bobbles Square features a fun mix of stitches, and the end result is so pretty! I did have to add a couple of rounds for size, and I've included that info below. This pattern is easy to follow, and she's provided lots of help, including a chart!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Bobble, Post Stitches, Treble Crochet, BLO (Back Loop Only), Sc2tog Decrease, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square only got to 10.5" as written, so I added a couple of rounds that repeated Round 11.

    Rnd 1: White
    Rnd 2:
    Lettuce
    Rnd 3:
    White
    Rnd 4:
    Lettuce
    Rnd 5:
    White
    Rnds 6 and 7:
    Lettuce
    Rnds 8 - 10:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 11:
    White
    Rnd 12 (added):
    Lettuce
    Rnd 13 (added):
    White

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

Moroccan Tile Rectangle for Warm Up America

Moroccan Tile Afghan for Warm Up America - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Moroccan Tile Rectangle takes one of my favorite crochet stitch patterns and turns it into a 7" x 9" rectangle, perfect for Warm Up America! Made with Caron Simply Soft, it's a great way to learn this stitch and do some good - and of course, it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

    What Is Warm Up America?

Warm Up America is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1991. "It is committed to motivating, training and coordinating volunteers to knit and crochet afghans and clothing for people in need. To this end, the foundation:

    1. Promotes, trains and encourages individual volunteers and groups to adopt the WUA! program as a local activity.
    2. Supports and assists these local volunteers by providing information and instructional materials through its website and newsletters.
    3. Acts as a collection point for sections, oversees assembly into completed blankets and ships items to various charitable organizations and agencies for distribution to the homeless and persons in need. "

    Warm Up America

What are those "sections?" They are crochet and knit rectangles, all measuring 7" x 9", that are sewn together into blankets! And there are lots of patterns for these sections out there. These rectangles are perfect for trying out new stitches and stitch patterns, and using up odds and ends of yarn.

I've been a big fan of theirs for many years now, and I encourage you to CLICK HERE to find out more about how you can help - and where you can send your rectangles! Of course, you don't have to send them anywhere - you can make a bunch and put them together yourself to keep the love going!

Caron Simply Soft is Perfect for Charity Crochet Projects

I've crocheted for a variety of charities over the years, and almost all of them want you to use a soft, medium weight, machine washable and dryable acrylic yarn. Wool can be tough on the skin, and acrylic is easy to keep clean - this is especially important when the blankets go to people with medical needs! Caron Simply Soft is the perfect choice.

Moroccan Tile Afghan for Warm Up America - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Soft, easy to care for acrylic, medium weight, and oh so affordable - that's Caron Simply Soft to a tee! If you've enjoyed the Moroccan Tile series of patterns here on Moogly, you'll love revisiting it now. And if you haven't tried it before, this is a great introduction to this versatile stitch!

Above you can see the square that Kim made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my second Lettuce one as I work through the rainbow!)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 11

My Notes: The Celestial Landing Afghan Square features a fascinating mix of stitches and techniques! I adore the use of Tunisian entrelac (no special hook needed). There are lots of photos to help, and Kim's extensive pattern writing experience makes it easy. This pattern will have lots of challenges for beginners, and will entertain experienced crocheters - I can't wait to see your versions of this one!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Stitching in the 3rd Loop, Join with DC (STDC), Popcorn Stitches, Tunisian Simple Stitch, Join with SC (STSC), Treble Crochet, Double Treble Crochet, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square got to size as written.

    Aqua: I used Light Gray
    Cream:
    I used Lettuce
    Medium Gray:
    I used White

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case

Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case Free Pattern on Moogly

The Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case is a quick and easy pouch to keep all your sunnies and reading glasses safe - and it pairs perfectly with the Casual Crochet Crossbody Bag and Casual Crochet Pouch! It's another fantastic, pretty and practical add-on for all your bags and totes, featuring Bernat Maker and a lovely bit of texture. And of course, it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Herringbone Half Double Crochet + Bernat Maker = Wow!

To crochet the Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case, I used Bernat Maker yarn. Bernat Maker has consumed my thoughts and my hook for the last month. This yarn brings your stitches to life with unparalleled sharpness and lets the herringbone half double crochet stitch sing.

Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case Free Pattern on Moogly

Maker features a cotton shell and a nylon filling, for the best of both worlds. It has a soft cotton feel that's gentle to the touch, and it provides durability and stability thanks to its nylon core. Plus, with a vibrant range of trendy shades, you can make a Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case to match every bag or outfit!

    Sunglasses, Reading Glasses, 3D Glasses!

Glasses can be a big investment - or a $5 impulse buy! Either way, you want to keep them safe. That first scratch on a lens is *such* a bummer! The Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case is made to match the other pieces in the set, but the stitch pattern does double duty here. The hhdc stitch creates a texture that's great to touch and look at, but it also makes a plush but tight fabric to keep your lenses unscathed.

Casual Crochet Sunglasses Case Free Pattern on Moogly

This handy glasses case or pouch features a wrist strap for on-the-go, but it's also long enough to attach to the strap of your favorite bag, or hang from a hook right next to your keys! Follow the step-by-step instructions below, and you'll have one in minutes. Each case uses only 50 yards of yarn, so they're great for craft fairs and bulk gifting too!

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 10

My Notes: The In A Dash Blanket Square is a fun mix of colors, stitches, rows, and rounds, perfect for your customization! The stitch combo creates a fun texture. The pattern writing style is not entirely standard, but it is easy to read and follow. When I was making this one, I found that with my gauge, the corners started to sort of point out a bit too much. To fix this, I eliminated some of the stitches in the corner ch spaces to bring them back down into shape. For example, in Rnd 10, I worked (hdc, ch 2, hdc) for the corner, instead of (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc).

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Fsc (Foundation Single Crochet); Join with SC (STSC), Treble Crochet, Join with HDC (STHDC), and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was coming out a bit small, so I added two more rnds in the style of Rnd 14 to get to size.

    Rows 1 - 3: Light Gray
    Rows 4 - 6:
    Lettuce
    Rows/Rnd 7 - 10:
    Light Gray
    Rnds 11 and 12:
    White
Rnds 13 and 14 (plus 2 more rnds in pattern for size):
    Lettuce
    Rnds 15 and 16:

Stitch Up 2024 Giveaway on Moogly

If you've never been to a Stitch Up before, they are all about the good vibes. We crochet, knit, eat, share, and make new friends. It's a unique retreat - and you don't have to know how to knit or crochet to join the fun. The focus is on learning, building community, and sharing our love of yarn crafting. No phones - all the pics from the event are courtesy of Hannah Schweiss @thestudiochicago, a professional photographer who attends, and ensures we all get to just play!

Stitch Up 2024 Giveaway on Moogly

"Stitch Up Chicago was born from the idea of taking an online group offline to share fiber love. That is what every single Stitch Up is about: creating safe spaces and celebrating our common love of fiber." They had to take a break because of the pandemic, but in April 2024 the 6th Stitch Up happened - and it was amazing!

Stitch Up 2024 Giveaway on Moogly

The sponsors are amazing, keeping ticket prices low and sending everyone home happy and content, with a whole pile of crochet and knit goodies! It's one of the most unique events I attend every year, and I'll keep hosting them as long as they'll have me!

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 9 by Celtic Knot Crochet

Above you can see the square that Jennifer made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my last Daffodil one as I work through the rainbow!)

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 9 by Celtic Knot Crochet

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 9

My Notes: I always know we're in for an exciting challenge with a Celtic Knot Crochet design - and this one is another gorgeous example! I stuck to her color scheme (swapping out to mine), but there are lots of possibilities. Eye-catching and entertaining as always!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Join with SC (STSC), Back Loop Only (BLO), Treble Crochet, Join with HDC (STHDC), and seamless join.

Sizing: My square got to size as written, but was almost too big.

    Rose: I used White
    Pink:
    I used Daffodil
    Cape Cod Blue:
    I used Light Gray

This square required a very mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.
