    Why Crochet Peppermint Candy Ornaments?

After looking up the whys of Christmas Acorns, I got curious about peppermint candies and their holiday connection. Here's what I found, according to Epicurious.com,

"According to The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, a local choirmaster in Cologne, Germany, sometime around 1670, was looking for a way to keep rowdy young people quiet while they were watching the live Nativity, and asked a local confectioner to create a special hard candy for the kids to keep busy on for a while."

But... apparently that and all the other origin stories are impossible to prove. No one really knows! But by 1919, Bob McCormack, a confectioner in Albany, Georgia, began manufacturing candy canes. By the middle of the 20th century, his company was one of the world's largest candy cane producers.

My best guess is that peppermint just feels so especially good in the cold air! And the round shape is a whole lot less messy to enjoy...

    Why Acorn Christmas Ornaments?

I'm a curious person, and I got to wondering just *why* we see acorns used as Christmas tree ornaments! Here's what I found out, courtesy of Taste of Home's article on the "Secret Meanings Behind Classic Crochet Ornaments":

"Did you know the oak tree is the national tree of Germany? The oak tree was sacred to ancient Germans, representing strength and good luck. Many early German Christmas trees were adorned with acorn ornaments to symbolize the little acorn becoming the mighty oak. Put one on your Christmas tree for a lucky year..."

So a crocheted Acorn Ornament symbolizes good luck, new beginnings, the gift of life, and good fortune - something we all could use more of in the new year!

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket - free crochet on Moogly

The Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket is a rule-breaking afghan that might be my new favorite way to work C2C crochet! Featuring Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing, this cuddly throw features a gorgeous gradient - I know you're going to love this way to crochet!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

Prefer a PDF? Click the links below!

Corner to Corner, Entrelac, Basketweave, Tunisian, JAYGO... let's go with Corner to Corner Tunisian!

One day I felt a sudden inspiration - could I do Tunisian corner to corner, withOUT breaking the yarn after each row? Yes! Now, does that make the "wrong side" of the Tunisian fabric will show? Yes! Did I ask multiple experts what this technique is? Yes! Did they agree? Absolutely not. One warned I might even get a lot of pushback from certain crocheters!

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket - free crochet on Moogly

But... I like it! And I'm going to be bold here - I think the wrong side of Tunisian doesn't always have to be hidden.

With this technique, we turn at the end of each row. Like any corner-to-corner block pattern, it creates a pixel or checkerboard pattern, emphasized further by the gradient yarn. Additionally, the texture change from RS and WS creates the look of a Basketweave design - using only one stitch. And even neater - see how the lines line up on each side? It's completely reversible, with the lines going width-wise on one side, and length-wise on the other!

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket - free crochet on Moogly

So...  a couple of days of head-scratching and throwing out *very* long titles later, I'm calling it the Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket. For the technique or stitch pattern itself, I think the most descriptive and accurate term might be "continuous Tunisian checkerboard-oriented entrelac," but you tell me what you think!

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket - free crochet on Moogly

While it's different from other Tunisian patterns, it's actually a great way to learn Tunisian crochet! We only use the Tunisian Simple Stitch, and there is a full length video tutorial to walk you through every kind of block you need to make it in any size!

While I used a double-ended Tunisian crochet hook, you can use any US-P/11.5mm crochet hook that has a shaft long enough to hold 7 loops of Bernat Blanket - 3" works in a pinch!

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket - free crochet on Moogly

Making Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing Shine

Bernat Blanket is one of my favorite yarns to crochet with - it's soft, plush, and so so gratifying. Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing takes it up a notch by adding the perfect gradient. No knots - these colors aren't tied together! The yarn changes from dark to light (or vice versa, depending on where you start!) for a consistent experience cake to cake.

Corner to Corner Tunisian Pixel Blanket - free crochet on Moogly

Oh yeah - this version of Bernat Blanket is in a cake, rather than the usual skein! But don't worry - it has the same 6-Super Bulky weight, washability, and the same yardage in both versions. So if you want to use this pattern with solid colors to create a purposeful design, the total amount of yarn shown in the chart below should be the same!

Gauge: Each Block measures 3" square and each skein makes 55 blocks.

How to Make this Blanket in Any Size

With this corner-to-corner technique, you can make this blanket as big or as small as you like!

    • Work the Increasing Rows until you have the Width of the blanket desired.
    • Then go to the Maintaining Width and Increasing Length section. Repeat these two rows until you have the Length desired.
    • Finally, go to the Finishing Out the Rectangle instructions to complete the blanket.
    • Add an edging or border if desired!

With the Gauge given above, here is information on how to make this Blanket in a variety of sizes.
Measurements given below exclude any border or edging. The border shown is approx 1.5" wide.

    Baby Blanket: 36" x 36" - 12 blocks x 12 blocks - 3 skeins

    Toddler Bed: 42" x 60" - 14 blocks x 20 blocks - 6 skeins

    Lapghan: 36" x 48" - 12 blocks x 16 blocks - 4 skeins

    Small Throw (shown) 42" x 72" - 14 blocks x 17 blocks - 5 skeins

    Throw: 51" x 72" - 17 blocks x 24 blocks - 8 skeins

    Twin: 69" x 90" - 20 blocks x 30 blocks - 11 skeins

    King: 105" x 96" - 35 blocks x 32 blocks - 21 skeins

    Cal King: 102" x 102" - 34 blocks x 34 blocks - 22 skeins

Twisted Sc - Twisted Single Crochet

    Special Stitches:

Standard Return Pass - Yo and pull through the first loop on the hook, *yo and pull through next 2 loops on hook; rep from * until 1 loop rem on hook.

Attached Return Pass - *Yo and pull through next 2 loops on hook; rep from * until 1 loop rem on hook.

TSS - Tunisian Simple Stitch: Insert hook in direction of work under the front vertical bar of the next st, pull up a loop.

    NOTES:

Each row of the blanket is made with a series of blocks. Each of those blocks is, in turn, made of 6 rows.

As we are increasing, each row of the blanket will have one more Block than the previous row. When increasing length while maintaining width, the number of Blocks will be the same for each row. When we begin decreasing on both sides to finish out the blanket, each row will be one Block shorter.

To create a consistent color layout for my blanket, I cut the yarn after making 55 Blocks with each skein. This is completely optional but will give a more consistent look to your finished blanket.

The border shown is worked in standard crochet stitches, not Tunisian. Feel free to switch it out with a different border or edging to make it your own!

Kiks + Jack Crochet: Designer Showcase

Kiks + Jack Crochet: Designer Showcase

This month's Designer Showcase features the talented Kiks + Jack Crochet! Molly's designs are eye-catching, and beautiful, and we're so lucky to be able to share 5 of her free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

    A Bit About the Designer

You could crochet a wardrobe worth of sweaters with the free crochet patterns on her site! Here's a bit about Molly, the designer behind Kiks + Jack Crochet, in her own words:

Kiks + Jack Crochet: Designer Showcase

Kiks + Jack Crochet is a blog that started from a crazy love for yarn....and a realization that crochet was the perfect hobby for busy people who feel like "they have no time for a hobby!"  Crocheting my first sweater (years ago) between meetings, whilst on the phone, waiting for appointments and chatting with family, was incredibly eye opening.  I felt creative, fulfilled and excited to know that I had made my own clothing with time I didn't even know I had!

So for the next few years, the goal was to share this crochet joy to all my friends who wanted to do something creative, but felt they were too busy.  To see them move from "I can't crochet, I'm not coordinated" to "I can't believe I'm doing this, I'm making something gorgeous!" was heartwarming.  Knowing they could eventually complete their sweater with 5 minutes or 5 hours to spare, was such an incredible thing for them to know and experience.

I decided to start www.kiksandjackcrochet.com with help from a family full of crocheters, knitters, seamstresses and photographers, but primarily with my daughter who has a great eye for modern fashion.  All our patterns are based on clothing we want in our wardrobe, and what we actually want to wear on an everyday basis.  Often, our patterns just start with a simple love for a specific type of yarn!

We hope that other crocheters around the world like our designs too. Our goal is that they be inspired to pick up a hook and make something beautiful!

Knit Wild by Anna-Sofia Vintersol Book Giveaway

December 10, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 2 Comments

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol is a whole mouthful - and a whole lotta book! Take a peek at the delightfully detailed patterns below, and then enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Knit Wild Review

    A Bit About the Author

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol

Knit Wild is Anna-Sofia Vintersol's first book with Stackpole, and it debuted in September of 2024.

"Anna-Sofia Vintersol learned to knit in 2018, when she fell in love with traditional Icelandic sweaters. She discovered how warm they are, and how well they performed, especially when hiking, skiing, or dog sledding. Not knowing anyone who could make her a sweater, she took it into her own hands to learn how to knit. Shortly after, she started making her own designs and created her Instagram account, @loparefur, to share her designs with the world. The meaning behind Loparefur is wool (Lopi) fox (refur). It is inspired by Lopi and her Shiba dogs, who are often mistaken for foxes.

Since then, she has published her first book, Adventure Knitting, and several Icelandic-inspired patterns for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, or just loves Icelandic wool, as much as she does. Anna-Sofia has a passion for stranded colorwork; her designs are inspired by the nature that surrounds her, her dogs, many other animals, and ancient cultures. After living for many years in Norway, she recently moved to the Pacific Northwest to live with her husband, an Anishinaabe Native, and enjoys learning about the culture and traditions he grew up with."

Now let's dive into Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam!

    Inside Knit Wild

Knit Wild is a beautiful hardcover and a hefty 240 pages. Sizes in the book range from 2XS to 4XL - that's 9 sizes per pattern!

"With animal- and nature-inspired themes, the wander-full sweater designs of Anna-Sofia Vintersol share your love of all things wild and free. Delightful motifs feature yokes of wolf faces and foxes, bears, whales, pawprints, and other colorwork patterns. A favorite pattern is sure to be Kitulo, a “choose your own adventure” sweater that can be endlessly customized with myriad mix-and-match charts. Every sweater from this design is one of a kind!

Beautifully detailed, colorful, and robust when knitted in hardy wool yarns, these sweaters are ready for outdoor adventures and will keep you toasty on hikes and camping trips. Prefer to sip cocoa indoors when temperatures dip? Knit them in a less-insulating wool and you’ll be quite comfortable. The colorwork keeps the knitting interesting; you’ll love watching the patterns emerge. Sizes range from 2XS to 4XL and are unisex—ready to be knit and enjoyed by all!"

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol

The designs in Knit Wild are "meant to cater to the demands of high-altitude expeditions in the snow-clad mountains." So Anna-Sofia recommends some pretty heavy duty wools - Icelandic, Peruvian, North American, Merina, and Norwegian specifically.

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol

Of course, wool doesn't work for everyone - so she recommends substituting Alpaca, Cotton, or Acrylic! Sweaters are one of the projects where you really do want to take the time to get gauge. This is true even when you use the exact yarn called for.

    Chart Reading Required

There is some guidance on colorwork, sizing, and blocking. But the vast majority of this book is devoted to the 21 knit sweater patterns. However, the written instructions only take 2-4 pages.

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol

In order to make the patterns in this book, you need to be able to read knit color charts! Each pattern in Knit Wild includes gorgeous, full-color photos of the sweaters in a variety of yarns, color combos, and sizes.

Knit Wild: 21 Sweaters with Nature-Inspired Motifs in Insulating Yarns to Keep You Warm Wherever You May Roam by Anna-Sofia Vintersol

Each of the sweaters in Knit Wild are unisex, and there are a variety of styles, from crew neck to hoodie. The animal motifs are utterly delightful - I love them all! The Kitulo in particular is a jaw-dropper perfect for experienced knitters. This book is amazing, and makes me want to dive into colorwork knitting!

Basic Crochet Christmas Stocking: Free Pattern and Tutorial

December 9, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 4 Comments

Basic Crochet Christmas Stocking - Moogly

'Tis the season! "Is everyone asking for a Christmas stocking this year? You can make lots of them with this easy crochet Christmas stocking pattern. It's a classic design that will make each one a treasured heirloom." Watch and learn how to make your own Basic Crochet Christmas Stocking with the links and video below!

Disclaimer: Materials and video provided by Yarnspirations and Michaels.

Is it Easy to Crochet a Christmas Stocking?

It all depends on the pattern! Like anything else, it can be complicated if you want it to be. To make it easier, look for:

    • Skill Level: Easy
    • Worsted Weight or larger yarn
    • Something with minimal color changes

This pattern fits the bill! And it's a free crochet pattern download on Yarnspirations! Personally, I like to recommend trying a stocking to crocheters who are interested in crocheting socks. An easy crochet stocking pattern is a great intro to turning a heel, and making a toe, without worrying about gauge or making a matching pair!

Get The Free Pattern and Supplies For the Basic Crochet Christmas Stocking Here:

Get the written pattern and supplies at the links below, then scroll down a bit more to see the tutorial!

This Christmas Stocking pattern is great for beginners, made primarily of the single crochet stitch (sc)! There are a few dc stitches in the edging at the cuff and decreases at the toe, but there are no magic circle or other tricky crochet stitches - we work cuff down. The finished size of the stocking is about 16" long and it uses worsted weight yarn. Pay particular attention to the heel and use those stitch markers and you'll stay on the right side of Santa this year!

And this pattern is ready for any of your embellishments! Try adding their name or other fun details using surface crochet, or add their initials with the Moogly Crochet Alphabet! Yarnspirations also has a great Crochet Alphabet now too!

    • Size U.S. H (5 mm) and U.S. G (4mm) Susan Bates crochet hook
    • Other supplies recommended: Stitch Markers. a Tapestry Needle (Yarn Needle), and of course, scissors!

Just grab the template for the size you want to make and you'll get the right fit, every time, no math needed! They work just as well for knitters, so check out this amazing tool for all hat makers, and enter to win a set of your own here on Moogly - we're giving away a set each to TWO lucky winners!

Disclaimer: This giveaway is sponsored by babé crochet. All opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

Whenever I make a top-down hat, I use babé crochet Hat Templates! The most recent are the Woven Warmth Hat, Casual Crochet Bucket Hat, Ribbon Run Hat, and Cobblestone Hat. Yes, these work for bucket hats as well as beanies and slouches! Shown in the other images is the Diamond Crochet Hat!

Hats I've made using babé crochet hat templates

Now Available in PDF Form - and Spanish and French!

The original Hat Templates are made of tough plastic, meant to last a lifetime. But there's now a new option - you can get them as PDFs! So you can print out just your favorite sizes in a good stiff cardstock - or use your Cricut to get real fancy! It's a fantastic, green option - at significant savings. The PDF version even includes extra sizes for Preemies!

    babe crochet Hat Templates PDFs

Additionally, the pattern instructions are now available in English, Spanish, and French! Oooh lala!

    babé crochet hat templates

But Wait... What are babé crochet Hat Templates?

If you haven't spotted these before, you are in for a treat! They revolutionize the hat making process, making it so you don't have to consult charts or tape measures or try it on again and again (though that might be part of the fun). babé crochet hat templates tell you how big (or small) to make your hats to fit every size - no math or tape measures needed! Here's a video I made on TikTok with more info on how they work!

@mooglyblog crocheting and knitting hats *that fit* doesn't require getting gauge, or finding just the right pattern. babé crochet hat templates make is so so easy. and I'm giving away 2 sets on Moogly right now! 😘 ends January 8, 2025, open worldwide! #babécrochet @babecrochetco #giveaway #crochet #knitting ♬ It's Lookin' Good - Becca Lynn

Using babé crochet Hat Templates is an extremely smooth experience. Working your hat top-down (crown to brim), put the center of your first round over the hole. Then, you match the size of your flat circle to the top of the curve. Once that is achieved, work even until it's the length of the template for a beanie, and a bit longer for slouch. This works for bucket hats too - I also used them to create the Casual Bucket Hat!

Making a Bucket Hat with babé crochet Hat Templates

No more fussing about sizing! Instead, you can grab the template for the size of the hat you're making and toss it in your project bag. If you crochet for a big family - or craft fairs - you can put together a set of templates with your most needed sizes to whip them up faster than ever! Great for all your holiday travel and vacations!

    Babé Crochet Hat Templates

By Once, Use It for Life

I've been using them for years - ever since I first learned about them! And I can tell that the set I have will last my entire crochet career, and keep getting used. These hat templates are made from strong plastic and each is embossed with its "Tool Number." You can see how these work on the chart below. Block #24:

    X Marks the Spot Square

    by Tiffany Tolbert

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 24 by Be Bold with Tiffany

Above you can see the squares that Tiffany and her testers made in 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors of Red Heart With Love! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors changed throughout the year. This is my third Boysenberry one as I finish up the rainbow! The white and light gray were carried throughout.)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 24

My Notes: The X Marks the Spot Square a lovely square to get creative with! Tiffany has designed an easy-to-memorize pattern that is perfect for taking on the road. You decide the color changes for a truly unique piece. When you get to Rnd 8, try Rnd 9 as is - I didn't trust it at first, thinking I needed another round. Nope, I got to size as written!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crossed Stitches, Front Post Stitches, Treble Stitches, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to size as written, but she's made this one super easy to adjust as needed - it's built right into the pattern! Everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnd 1: Boysenberry
    Rnd 2:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 3: Boysenberry
    Rnd 4: White
    Rnd 5:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 6: Light Gray
    Rnd 7:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 8: White
    Rnd 9:
    White

This square required a strong blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

This cuddly cutie is perfect for gifting, working up quick with fuzzy and super bulky yarn - and it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Bear Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Made in Quick and Easy Bernat Blanket - for Polar Bears and Teddy Bears!

As always, I chose to make the Bear Squish with Bernat Blanket, for a super cozy and cuddly teddy bear you can whip up in a weekend! I used what I had on hand, which means I made a Polar Bear Squish. But if you are looking for a Teddy Bear Squish, just switch out the colors! I recommend Taupe for Color A, and Sand for Color B. Or go bold with jewel tones, neons - that's the joy of making it yourself!

Bear Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

As a 6-Super Bulky yarn, this pattern creates a 10" toy - a little bigger once it's stuffed! If you'd like to make it smaller - or even bigger - choose whatever yarn you like, and use whatever hook gets you a nice tight fabric. Bernat Maker Minis are a lot of fun for amigurumi!

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This crochet bear pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes and a safety nose, but this pattern has not been "tested for safety for children under 3 years of age." If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the features and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely - especially that tail! If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

    Branching Out Shawlette

November 24, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 88 Comments

Branching Out Shawlette - FREE crochet pattern on Mooglyblog.com!

I've been wanting to design a simple, half-circular shawlette for a long time, and at long last the right yarn and the right pattern came together, and the Branching Out Shawlette is the happy end result!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

    A Great Shawl for Beginners

The Branching Out Shawlette is a great shawl for beginners - the stitches are simple, but very pleasing, and it's an easy shawl to make. With its clean, modern lines, I think it'll please people of all ages. And the Knitpicks/WeCrochet Galileo Yarn is perfect. The beautiful yarn combo of merino wool and bamboo make it light but warm, with great stitch definition - and very very soft!

Branching Out Shawlette - FREE crochet pattern on Mooglyblog.com!

My mannequin, Susan, is a lot more petite than I am - and armless, poor dear. On fluffy 3x, double-armed me with a wingspan of about 5'8", the Branching Out Shawlette comes to the elbow - and the slightly-more-than-a-semicircle shape stays on very securely! I'm wearing it as I type!

There are no repeat rows in this pattern, so each row and little step gets its own line of instruction. Nonetheless, you'll probably catch on to the pattern quite quickly! This eye-catching piece would also work in a heavier weight yarn for a larger finished shawl.

    Block #23:

    Sugar Plum Delight

    by Kirsten Holloway Designs

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 23 Courtesy of Kirsten Holloway Designs

Above you can see the square that Kirsten made in 4 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors of Red Heart With Love! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my second Boysenberry one as I finish up the rainbow! The white and light gray are being carried throughout.)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 23

My Notes: The Sugar Plum Delight Square is one to take your time with! Kirsten has designed a challenging pattern that you'll want to be able to concentrate on as you go. It's complicated, but just look at it - it's gorgeous! I did have to eliminate a few rounds for size, but it's still beautiful. This one took me several evenings, so don't rush it. Even so, I made a mistake and worked the puff stitches from Rnd 14 as popcorn stitches - I think it still works!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Popcorn Stitch, Puff Stitch, Post Stitches, BLO, and seamless join.

Sizing: To get the size just right, I had to stop after Rnd 16, and for Rnd 17 I worked a round of sc, hdc, and dc stitches, all in the BLO, to create a straight edge. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go!

    Rnds 1 and 2: Boysenberry
    Rnd 3: Light Gray
    Rnds 4 and 5: White
    Rnds 6 and 7: Boysenberry
    Rnd 8: Light Gray
    Rnds 9 and 10:
    White
    Rnds 11 and 12: Boysenberry
    Rnd 13:
    D - Boysenberry; A - Light Gray
    Rnd 14: D - Boysenberry; A - Light Gray; C - White
    Rnd 15: D - Boysenberry; B - White
    Rnd 16: D - Boysenberry; C - Light Gray
Final Rnd (see Sizing above): White

This square required a strong blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    Mini Turkey Squish

Mini Turkey Squish - Free Crochet Pattern by Moogly

The Mini Turkey Squish is a more "bite-size" version of the Turkey Squish! Featuring Bernat Maker Minis, this adorable amigurumi softie whips up fast! Get the free crochet pattern here on Moogly!

    Making It Mini

The Mini Turkey Squish is a much smaller version of the Turkey Squish, made with Bernat Blanket! It's a big 10" ball of fun! Here's a look at the big version:

Turkey Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

For this Mini Turkey Squish, I used Bernat Maker Minis, for a pal that's about 4-5" across/tall! Bernat Maker Minis take your Amigurumi - and other colorful creations - to the next level! Each package included 10 fab colors, and this yarn is a joy to use, with fantastic stitch definition.

Mini Turkey Squish - with Bernat Maker Minis

I did have to make a few adjustments to the original Turkey Squish to mark this Mini version - and I was able to keep it to one ball of each color - leaving lots for other colorful projects! (Except for the Brown - we'll use just about all of that one!)

    Mini Turkey Squish in progress

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This small crochet turkey pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes, but this pattern has not been "tested for safety for children under 3 years of age." If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the features and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely - especially the tail feathers! If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

    3. Sew the small end of the Wattle to the last round of the Bottom Half of the Body, slightly to the right of center, in the front of the feet, as shown.

Mini Turkey Squish - feet and wattle on bottom

    4. Sew the Tail Feathers to the Top Half of the Body, right above the last round. Be sure to position opposite the eyes, centered between the wings. Sew color B feather straight up in center, sew color C feathers along either side of B feather, and then sew color D feathers straight out along side, as shown below.

Mini Turkey Squish - sew on feathers

    5. Use the long tail on the Top Half of Body to whip stitch the Top and Bottom together JUST OVER HALF WAY around. Be sure to match up the wings, and wattle the eyes and feet in the same direction. Stop just a few stitches past the second safety eye, and pin this sewing end out of the way.

    6. Sew the Beak to the front, between the eyes, at the top of the Wattle.

    7. Fill with fiber fill. Finish using the long tail on the Top Half of Body to whip stitch the Top and Bottom together.

    What are the "Squishes?"

The Squishes are a series of big round crochet softies, aka amigurumi, that I have designed here on Moogly. They are all 10" across, and feature Bernat Blanket! And there are more to come!

    Squish pattern on Moogly

These are an amazing way to learn how to crochet stuffed animals, softies, and amigurumi! The large yarn and hook size means they work up quickly and the stitches are easy to see. Assembling 3D objects can be tricky, but doing it on this large scale makes it a whole lot easier! Of course, if you love the look but prefer something more pocket sized, you can just use a thinner yarn and smaller hook!

Turkey Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Made in Quick and Easy Bernat Blanket!

As mentioned above, Bernat Blanket is my choice for the Squishes, our new turkey softie included. In addition to being thick and easy to use, it's also available in dozens of colors! You can pick it up on Yarnspirations.com or at your local craft store, and it's machine washable and dryable! (If you do intend to wash it, make sure to use washable stuffing. Otherwise, you can spot clean it!)

While Thanksgiving might not get as many dedicated crochet patterns, this Turkey Squish is a fun way to add extend the autumn holidays, and sure to put a smile on everyone's face!

All About My Craftours Trip to England

I can't believe it's been a month since I our Craftours trip to England - and an amazing group of fellow crocheters and travelers! We saw, we ate, we stitched, and the memories are ones I will cherish for a lifetime. Here's what we did - and where you can sign up for our next crochet adventure!

No More FOMO! Ready to Sign Up for Our Next Trip?

Up next, we're planning trips to Scotland and Germany (and eventually New Zealand)!

    Scotland: September 6-14, 2025

Austria and Bavaria: December 7-15, 2025

If you are interested in any of those trips (or all!) please CLICK HERE to let Craftours know! First of all, we need to have enough people interested for the trip to go forward. And when you sign up for info early, Craftours will contact you prior to announcing the trip to the general public so you have the first opportunity of joining us! It's no obligation so please let them know you're interested today!

    Join me in New Zealand!

Reviewing Our Craftours Trip to England

Day 1 - Flying to England, Driving to Canary Wharf - October 5

Our flight out of JFK left around 10:30pm and arrived around 10:30am, and was about 6 hours long - so that was all the sleep for that night! The jet lag was real, but it's important to push through that first day if possible. Our hotel was right on the Thames in Canary Wharf, and after arriving at our hotel we were able to relax and settle in until our welcome dinner. A lovely quiet start!

We saw so many people lining up to have their photos taken at this telephone booth! But don't let this picture fool you. They aren't rare - the booths are still all over! In fairness, this one did have a fresh coat of paint and had a nice backdrop.

So much beautiful architecture, it's nearly impossible to keep track of what you're looking at! Pretty sure this is Westminster...

The view from the front of our hotel - that giant rubber ducky became quite a handy landmark when wondering out and about in Canary Wharf!

Finishing the evening, trying a Pimm's - a British drink I'd only ever heard of before. It was delicious - do recommend!

Day 2 - Visit Stonehenge, Highclere Castle, and Driving to Bath - October 6

After a good night's sleep, we were up early and on the road - for this trip, most of our travel was upfront. So we checked out of our hotel, and got on the bus to Stonehenge!

You can't get too close to Stonehenge these days - but....

One of the fallen stones from Stonehenge

One of the fallen stones is right next to the visitor's center, and....

I got to touch it! Did it connect like ancient LEGO? Looks like it!

If you do walk out to see Stonehenge a bit closer (30+ minutes each way), be sure to notice this Roman mile maker - even the Romans were fascinated by these stones! The leech just seems picturesque here, as opposed to the creek back home...

Then it was time to get back on the bus and head to Highclere Castle! This is where they filmed the Downton Abbey series, and movie. Above is a Greenman carved by Simon O'Rourke, which you can see on the drive to the Castle.

We happened to be there on the last day of the Highclere History Festival, which explored life at the Castle between 1939 and 1945. So there were lots of old tents, cars, and people wondering about in costume - and a camel!

There was a little bit of a line, and some of that famously damp British weather, but it moved quickly and were were inside! Unfortunately, photos aren't allowed inside the castle. The rooms from the show were easily recognizable, and it was fun to see some of the things behind the scenes. The only thing I really wished I could've taken a photo of and I cannot seem to find a photo of online is the hand-embroidered "monkey panels" (my name for them) in the room behind the library. They are VERY cheeky, with eyes that follow you around the room!

After a tour of the castle, we were able to explore the grounds - and I finally got a hot tea and scone with clotted cream! It was at a rickety table under a tent in the rain, and it was perfect.

After finishing up at the Castle, we checked into our hotel in Bath. A perfect view, and a fun new friend!

For dinner, several of us headed across the street, and we sold out the rest of their roast dinners! This was the real deal, with beef, Yorkshire pudding, veggies, and gravy. So much food!

Day 3 - Cooking Class, the Roman Baths, and Crochet Workshop #1 - October 7

I didn't get enough pictures of this experience, but it was fantastic! We made pistachio-crusted chicken and sticky toffee pudding - did you know that it's cake? I need to get some molasses (aka treacle) so I can make it for the family!

    Studious students!

It was the first time I've gotten to take a cooking class, and I learned a lot beyond the recipes. I feel much more confident in cooking with spirits now!

After a delicious lunch, we headed back to Bath and some of us chose to use our free afternoon to visit the Roman Baths! Right at the end, we got to drink the water - the fresh spring water, not the stuff from the bath itself... yikes!

After the Baths, it was a race back to the hotel for our first Crochet Workshop! I debuted the Queens Crossbody Bag to this wonderful group!

Queens Crossbody Bag - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

At the end of our 3rd day, I put together a quick video of our trip so far:

Day 4 - Panoramic Tour of Bath, Visiting Borton-On-The-Water, and back to London - October 8

After two days in Bath, we checked out of our hotel and started our journey back to London! But of course, there were sights to see along the way.

First we took a tour of Bath, and visited both the Circus and the Crescent. The gardens were lovely, and we got so lucky with the weather.

After some exercise, it was back on the bus for a drive through the Cotswolds and stop at the picturesque town of Borton-on-the-Water. We saw slate roofs with moss, I had a lovely pot of tea, and we fed the ducks!

After enjoying the town, it was back on the bus one more time, for our return trip to London.

More views from the bus - the black cabs are still there, but now they have ads all over them! - then Nandos for dinner, and a shot of our hotel from the Rubber Ducky's viewpoint!

Day 5 - Panoramic Tour of London, Crochet Workshop #2, and a Trip to Harrods - October 9

We stayed in London for the rest of our trip - but we weren't short on things to do! We started the day with a guided tour of London, which included some amazing stops!

I'm sure no trip to London would be complete without a stop at Buckingham Palace and the grounds! Such a gorgeous park. We even got to see a bit of the ceremony, and again, the weather was amazing. Despite my best efforts, not a single royal was spotted.

Then it was more sights from the bus - towers everywhere!

And we got to see what remains of the original Roman wall around Londinium!

It was a wonderful tour, but we were ready for lunch, followed by Crochet Workshop #2! Everyone made amazing progress on their Queens Crossbody Bags!

Queens Crossbody Bag - Collage 2 Queens Crossbody Bag - Collage 1

And after class was over, a few of us made our way to Harrods. I've never been to such a fancy department store! The basement gift shop was more my speed, uh, financially.

Yes, the decor is elaborate and Egyptian-themed, and the whole place is so opulent you can almost miss it if you don't stop to look around!

The food court was awe-inspiring - and strictly to go, no eating in. And yes, those are gold-leafed sandwiches. It's Harrods!

At the end of this day, I made another video, to show off the last few days in action!

@mooglyblog Bath, to Borton-on-the-water, and back to London for the rest of the stay. More to come. #Englandtravel #craftours @craftours #moogyblog #crochetinstructor #britain ♬ Love Actually (Piano Music from the Motion Picture) Relaxing Piano, Romantic Piano, Classical Piano, Movie Theme - Craig Armstrong & Jeffrey Michael

Day 6 - The London Knitting and Stitching Show  - October 10

This year, the London Knitting and Stitching Show was held at Alexandra Palace! There was a lot of art there, and not everyone was up for photos, so I didn't get too many. This show had a ton of classes, and so much beautiful yarn and fabric!

It was a cold, rainy, and windy day - perfect for a yarn and fabric show!

Inside the show was spread over a few rooms, and you'd find embroidery next to yarn next to fabric next to sewing machines! It is a wonderful show for any hobbyist in the area!

There were a few big names there, and lots of independent dyers as well. I picked up a lovely skein of yarn from The Urban Purl that I showed off in my last live! One of my fellow travelers was Noelle R. B. Stiles, author of Colorful Crochet Cables and all-around brilliant person - and she got to do a book signing!

After the show it was time to rest, regroup, and refuel - only one full day to go!

Day 7 - The Tower of London - October 11

This was our last full day in London, and the plan was to visit the Tower of London and then see what we felt up to afterward. Reality set in soon - the Tower of London is a full-day event! We were smart and got the earliest tour we could.

And we still didn't see it all! There was so much more than "the tower." It's a whole... village? There are many buildings, all surrounding the infamous tower. You can explore the tower, the other museums and displays, and walk the battlements.

There are suits of armor, more Roman artifacts, and of course, the Crown Jewels! You weren't allowed to photograph the Crown Jewels, but they are still astonishing to see in real life. Some are so big they just stop looking real!

The view was amazing, and it was the perfect, exhausting, and exhilarating way to finish our trip! That night finished up with our farewell dinner, and then we all had lots of packing to do. The ride to the airport the next morning was so bittersweet - ready to go home, but not ready to leave all my new friends!

The Tower Bridge, as seen from the Tower of London

Finally, after an uneventful trip home, I put together one last video - enjoy! It was a wonderful Craftours Trip to England - I can't wait for the next one!

@mooglyblog From the London Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace to the Tower of London, our last 2 days were amazing. Caught the London (pink?!) Get 10+ Great Ways to Make Slippers Non Slip on Moogly!

Handmade slippers are great - but slippery! Here are over 10 great ideas for how to make crochet and knit slippers non slip! Originally posted in 2013, this list has been updated with new links and new ideas for 2024!

Traction can be a real problem!

Crochet slippers are a wintertime staple! I've designed several pairs for Moogly, and I also put together a roundup of 20 crochet slipper patterns for the whole family!

And one question always comes up - how do you make crochet and knit slippers non-slip? As a homeowner with hardwood floors, tile, and 3 kids, it's a quest I'm familiar with! So with slipper gift-giving season upon us, today's roundup features a collection of ideas I've put together to make slippers non-slip.

Some of this stuff you might already have, or be able to find at the hardware or craft store - or just click the link to buy online!

Get 10+ Great Ways to Make Slippers Non Slip on Moogly!

10+ Ways to Make Crochet & Knit Slippers Non-Slip

    1. Plastic Dip: I've seen this recommended by lots of crocheters and knitters. It comes in cans so you can just use a cotton swab to dab on some dots that will dry into neat rubber grips, or get the can for an easy spray!7 Great Ways to Make your #Crochet and #Knit Slippers Non Slip! All kinds of handy ideas here!
    2. Fiber-Lok Non Skid Backing: This product is made to be brushed on the back of rugs, so it's great on fabrics and easy to use! Just be sure to let it dry and use two coats. With 15 square feet of double coat coverage, that's a lot of slippers!
7 Great Ways to Make your #Crochet and #Knit Slippers Non Slip! All kinds of handy ideas here!
    3. Puffy Fabric Paint: How many of you have some of these dimensional fabric paints in your crafting stash? You don't see too many puffy paint shirts out there anymore, but the paints are still popular - the texture of small dots is great for making socks and slippers non slip. Bonus, you get to make fun designs in all the colors! If you can't find puff paints, perhaps...7 Great Ways to Make your #Crochet and #Knit Slippers Non Slip! All kinds of handy ideas here!
    4. Use the Hot Glue Gun: This one happens to be my personal favorite, but this quick fix is perfect for creating slip resistance on your footwear  - just be sure to let it dry first - don't glue yourself to your hard flooring!
      Surebonder Hot Glue Gun
    5. Non-Slip Indoor Rug Pad: Some knitters and crocheters like to use the stuff you're supposed to layer between the rug and the floor. Just trace their shoes, cut it out and sew it on - or if you don't sew, try washable fabric glue! Just like footie pajamas!
7 Great Ways to Make your #Crochet and #Knit Slippers Non Slip! All kinds of handy ideas here!
    6. Silicone Sealant: Flexible, and dries clear! Check your garage or workplace - you might already have some laying around...
SiliconeI even found a great video on youtube that shows just how to apply it:
    7. Slipper Soles: These definitely put comfort first! Boye is a brand most yarn crafters know, but did you know they sell pre-made soles for knit and crochet slippers? They are often sold out, but which makes me wonder if you couldn't work a blanket stitch around these sheepy insoles, and treat the bottom? You also might be able to find leather or suede soles in your local yarn shop!7 Great Ways to Make your #Crochet and #Knit Slippers Non Slip! All kinds of handy ideas here!
    8. Fancy Custom Felt Soles on the Zen of Making: Aren't these gorgeous! If you've got the sewing skills, these give a truly exceptional finished look. You'll need thick felt and the puffy fabric paint listed above for this non-slip solution. 7 Great Ways to Make your #Crochet and #Knit Slippers Non Slip! All kinds of handy ideas here!
    9. Dritz Anti-Skid Gripper Fabric: Hey, guess what - there's a product specifically designed for this! It says right on the package - "For pajamas and slippers. Prevents Slips and Falls." Perfect!
      Dritz Anti Skid Gripper Fabric
    10. Prym Espadrille Woven Soles with Rubber Base: It's easy to sew into the woven edge - whether you add fabric or yarn is up to you! These are amazing for DIY non-slip shoes!

Crocheting the Velvet and Fur Christmas Stocking

Now let's talk about this stocking! With velvet and fur, it's a feast for the senses. This luxurious look fits many holiday trends, from boho to luxe. And you can pick from any of the gorgeous colors to make your own custom combo. Customize it further with the Moogly Crochet Alphabet (worked in thread or fine yarn to fit), or traditional embroidery!

Pom poms and special name tags are perfect for personalizing it too! You could even use a bit of wood to make it work with a rustic theme. There's also a hanger or loop built into the top opening, so it's ready to fill with gifts! I'm sure you'll each add your own final awesome touch.

Velvet and Fur Christmas Stocking - free crochet pattern on Moogly!

To get this look, the Velvet and Fur Christmas Stocking features two gorgeous yarns - Bernat Baby Velvet and Red Hygge Fur. They are both incredible to touch and full of cozy winter elegance - but they can be a little challenging to work with!

    Velvet Yarn Tips

Bernat Baby Velvet - get great tips for working with this yarn on Mooglyblog.com!

The "velvet" yarns are the market are essentially chenille. And chenille doesn't like to be worked loosely, and it doesn't like to be washed in the machine. Go for solid fabrics in both crochet and knit - not drape! I would not recommend using to make a standard pompom.

To make any project with Bernat Baby Velvet, it's important to use a smaller hook size, and close stitches, such as those shown here in the free crochet Christmas Stocking pattern. And luckily, stockings only need occasional spot cleaning!

    Fur Yarn Tips

Red Heart Hygge Fur - get great tips for working with this yarn on Mooglyblog.com!

As for working with fur yarns, the biggest challenge is seeing your stitches. It's important to have good lighting, first and foremost. And while I would normally recommend working over a white cloth, here we are using a luxury dreamy white yarn - so a darker cloth will help you see a bit better. Of course, if you chose a dark grey, medium brown or other deep color, then the lighter cloth works best!

When you are crocheting with Red Heart Hygge Fur, try to feel for each st with you non-hook hand, and pay attention to the spacing between stitches - this will be the best guide. And you may notice I haven't included a stitch count for that section - the number isn't important, as long as you're working "straight-up" from the leg! This faux fur cuff is worth it!

    Now let's get crocheting!

    Block #22:

    Just Breathe Square

    by Best Crochet Life

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 22 Courtesy of Best Crochet Life

Above you can see the square that Pam made in 6 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors of Red Heart With Love! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my first Boysenberry one as I finish up the rainbow! The white and light gray are being carried throughout.)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 22

My Notes: The Just Breathe Square features lots of fun and interesting stitches - and wow does that center pop! Pam has created a pattern that may challenge you, but will also supports you along the way, with lots of helpful full-color close-up photos. Take your time with this one, it's worth it!

Sizing: To get the size just right, I worked the last two rounds as BLO sc. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go!

    Rnd 2: White
    Rnd 3: Light Gray
    Rnds 4 and 5: Boysenberry
Rnds 6 and 7: Light Gray
    Rnds 8 - 11: White
    Rnd 12: Light Gray
    Rnd 13: Boysenberry
    Rnd 14: White

This square required a moderate blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    Queens Crossbody Bag

Queens Crossbody Bag - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Queens Crossbody Bag is a handy little tote or pouch, that combines my newest stitch pattern and most unusual construction method! I had a lot of fun teaching this bag to my workshop in England, and now I'm excited to share it all here with you. This free crochet pattern on Moogly features Lily Sugar'n Cream!

A Crossbody Bag to Visit the... King?

I was lucky enough to teach crochet workshops on a trip to England with Craftours in October 2024, and this was the pattern I designed for the trip! (Click HERE to sign up for info on upcoming trips!) When I design a new pattern, the name comes last, so I did a bit of free association... We have a crossbody bag, with a stitch pattern that makes little pluses or crosses. For a trip to the UK, that left from NYC. Where Queens Crossing is! And of course, England just lost their Queen... Queens Crossbody Bag it is. And you'll feel like you're queen of the world when you make your own? Let's go with it.

Queens Crossbody Bag - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

I used Lily Sugar’n Cream for the trip kits because the skeins were the right size, and there are many beautiful colors to choose from! However, you could use any worsted or aran weight yarn you like - the Queens Crossbody Bag would look amazing in Bernat Maker too!

Queens Crossbody Bag - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

So How Did the Workshop Go?

It was amazing! It's always a little nerve-wracking to introduce a new pattern, and teach it live doubly so! But I couldn't have asked for a better group of crocheters. Some got it right away from the written instructions, some were helped by the chart I drew during class, and others needed to see me demonstrate it a few times, and give it a little practice. But we all got there! Here are some of their fantastic WIPS!

Queens Crossbody Bag - Collage 1

So below you'll find written instructions, as well as a (much neater) hand-drawn chart of the main stitch pattern. And there are right and left-handed video tutorials linked below (debuting October 24, 2024) - so you can follow along at your own speed!

Queens Crossbody Bag - Collage 2

I really appreciated the feedback I got in class, and I've used that to try to make this pattern even better! I hope you enjoy making the Queens Crossbody Bag!

    Crochet Abbreviations

Crochet in the third loop of half double crochet

    Seamless Finishing

    Special Stitch:

WTr (Woven Treble): Yo twice, working in front of ch sp in row below and behind ch sp in second row below, insert hook in unworked st in third row below. (You may find it helpful to pull this stitch forward so that no ch sps obstruct it.) Yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through two loops] three times. Make sure not to enclose or work over any of the ch sps when making this st.

    NOTES:

Keep a stitch marker in the first and last hdc st of each row to help keep track of where you are in the repeat.

The slip stitches in the Second Panel of the bag are all worked into Row 4 of the Sides of the Bag. Their purpose is to join the Panel to the Sides. Do not crochet into those sl sts - just the 25 sts starting and ending with hdc.

To change colors at the end of a row, finish the last stitch of the row by working the last yo with the new color.
