The Casual Crochet Bucket Hat is a breathable, easy-to-wear summer hat - made with Bernat Maker to match the Casual Bag Set! It's a reader request, and I love the way it turned out. And of course, it's a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Continuing the Texture with Bernat Maker
To crochet the Casual Crochet Bucket Hat, I used Bernat Maker yarn. Bernat Maker inspired the Casual Crossbody Bag, Pouch, and Sunglasses Case, and those inspired a request for a matching Bucket Hat! I used the same stitches, and the leftover bits of yarn for a matching set - but this will look fantastic in solid colors too. And then it's a one-skein pattern!

Maker features a cotton shell, and here I've worked it with a smaller-than-recommended hook. This gives the Bucket Hat its shape, and creates a fabric with intentional breathability across the top. It has a soft cotton feel that's gentle to the touch, and it provides durability and stability thanks to its nylon core. With all the gorgeous colors, you can make them to match all your summer outfits!

A Looser Fit and A Trendy Look!
Bucket hats are a hot look for summer - and there are a few new ones coming out every year! The Casual Crochet Bucket Hat is the first one I've designed, but not the first one I've made. The others have all featured a tighter fit, more akin to a stocking cap.

For this hat, I wanted a looser fit, which I prefer for hot weather, so I used standard hdc stitches for a more open weave. For the sides, I used the hhdc stitches so that we have that great texture. And then the brim alternates for a fun striping effect!

It won't stick to your head, it won't crush your hair, and the brim keeps the sun off your face and out of your eyes. We know crochet is self-care already... but here it's health care too!
Reader Requested - and Tested!
I'm excited to say that this pattern was a reader request from Shellie Shaffner, who very kindly emailed me - and agreed to test the pattern before its release, catching a typo I had made. Thank you so much, Shellie! Shellie's friend JJ agreed to model it, and I think it looks great in the Fawn colorway!

Shellie did share that she needed to go down one hook size to get gauge, so be sure to make a gauge swatch (or try it on as you go... I know how it goes haha)!
