Put a Bird On It Applique

    Published: May 17, 2013 · Modified: Jun 20, 2018 by Tamara Kelly · 6 Comments

A dear friend of mine got to be an extra on Portlandia last year, and I quickly got hooked on the show! So when I decided to make a little birdie applique to decorate some of the flower pot cozies, I couldn't resist using the catchphrase from one of their sketches - Put a Bird On It!

The Put a Bird On It Applique as shown measures just 1.5" wide. Change the yarn and hook size to change the size of the finished applique! I can't wait to see what you put a bird on next!

    • US - F, 3.75mm hook
    • 5 yards total worsted weight yarn in 2-3 colors
    • 1 stitch marker
    • Magic circle video tutorial available here.

    Body Instructions:

Round 1: With Color A, leaving a long tail, make a magic circle and work 6 sc into the ring. Do not join or chain. (6 sts)

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each st of previous round, placing a st marker in 1st st of round if needed. Do not join or chain. (12 sts)

Round 3: Sc in the first st, 2 hdc in the next st, dc in the next st. Ch 3 and break yarn, leaving long tail. Sew tail to base of dc st, and secure, leaving length to sew the applique on with later.

    Beak Instructions:

Counting from the dc st at the end of Round 3 of the body, skip the next 4 sts. Join to the next (5th) st with a sl st, using Color B. Break yarn, pull the end on through the sl st, and weave in ends.

    Eye Instructions:

Oh my goodness, this little bird is adorable, and a surprise. During the crocheting process it didn't look like any bird I'd ever seen, until I broke my yarn and turned it around, and viola -- a bird..lol Thanks for a fun pattern. (as posted on FB)
