The Diamond Crochet Cowl was one of my first crochet patterns - and a rather ambitious one for me as a new designer! But it's become a favorite over the years, and inspired requests for a matching hat. So the Diamond Crochet Hat has been added - in sparkly Red Heart Hygge Charm!
The yarns I originally used to design the Diamond Crochet Cowl have been discontinued for some time now, so I wanted to find a great substitute. Red Heart Hygge Charm was a perfect one - or you could use Red Heart Soft if you prefer this hat without the sparkle.

The Diamond Crochet Hat pattern features a very stretchy brim, so there are 2 sizes: Teen/Adult Small and Adult Large. The patterns are written up separately so they are easier to follow. While I made the "slouch" version of the Teen/Adult Small, instructions are included for a tighter fitting "beanie" version as well, for a truly custom fit for each person!

Notes:
This pattern is worked from the top down. Be sure to follow the instructions for your size.
If you prefer to avoid the CSDC, you can substitute a ch 3 or whatever dc substitute you prefer.

Teen/Adult Small (20-22" head) Instructions:
Rnd 1: Make a magic circle, CSDC in the ring, 11 dc in the ring; join. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: (CSDC, dc) in the first st, 2 dc in each rem st around; join. (24 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *[2 sc in the next st, fpdc around the next st] 3 times, sc in the next st, 2 fpdc around the next st; rep from * around, join. (36 sts)
Rnd 4: (CSDC, dc) in the first st, dc in the next 2 sts, *2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts; rep from * around, join. (48 dc)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in the first st, fptr around the last post st 2 rows below, [sc in the next 3 sts of previous row without skipping any behind post st, fptr around next post st 2 rows below] 4 times, skip next st of previous rnd, *[sc in the next 3 sts of previous row without skipping any behind post st, fptr around next post st 2 rows below] 5 times, skip next st of previous rnd; rep from * once, sc in last 2 sts of previous rnd, join. (60 sts in each rem rnd until brim)
Rnd 6: CSDC in the first st, dc in each rem st around; join.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in the first 3 sts, fptr2tog around the first 2 post sts 2 rows below, skip next st of previous rnd, *sc in next 3 sts, fptr2tog around previous post st and next post st, skip next st of previous rnd; rep from * around, join.
Rnd 8: Rep Row 6.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in the first st, fptr2tog around the last and first fptr2tog sts 2 rows below, skip next st of previous rnd, *sc in next 3 sts, fptr2tog around previous and next fptr2tog sts, skip next st of previous rnd; rep from * around until 2 sts rem, sc in last 2 sts, join.
Rnd 10 - 17: Repeat Rnds 6-9; if making beanie version go straight to Brim Instructions.
Rnd 18 - 21 (Slouch Version Only): Repeat Rnds 6-9, then go to Brim Instructions.
Adult Large (22-24" head) Instructions:
Rnd 1: Make a magic circle, CSDC in the ring, 15 dc in the ring; join. (16 dc)
Rnd 2: (CSDC, dc) in the first st, 2 dc in each rem st around; join. (32 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *2 sc in the next st, fpdc around the next st; rep from * around, join. (48 sts)
Rnd 4: (CSDC, dc) in the first st, dc in the next 2 sts, *2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts; rep from * around, join. (64 sts in each rem rnd until brim)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in the first st, fptr2tog around the last and first fpdc sts 2 rows below, skip next st of previous rnd, *sc in next 3 sts, fptr2tog around the last and first fpdc sts 2 rows below, skip next st of previous rnd; rep from * around until 2 sts rem, sc in last 2 sts, join.
Rnd 6: CSDC in the first st, dc in each rem st around; join.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in the first 3 sts, fptr2tog around the first 2 post sts 2 rows below, skip next st of previous rnd, *sc in next 3 sts, fptr2tog around previous post st and next post st, skip next st of previous rnd; rep from * around, join.
Rnd 8: Rep Row 6.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in the fist st, fptr2tog around the last and first fptr2tog sts 2 rows below, skip next st of previous rnd, *sc in next 3 sts, fptr2tog around previous and next fptr2tog sts, skip next st of previous rnd; rep from * around until 2 sts rem, sc in last 2 sts, join.
Rnd 10 - 17: Repeat Rnds 6-9; if making beanie version go on to Brim Instructions.
Rnd 18 - 21 (Slouch Version Only): Repeat Rnds 6-9.
Brim Instructions (All Sizes):
Row 1: Ch 8, blo sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch, sc2tog in the next 2 sts of the last rnd; turn. (8 sts)
Row 2: Skipping the sc2tog, blo sc in each remaining st across; turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in blo sc in each st across, sc2tog in the next 2 sts of the last rnd; turn. (8 sts)
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until 1 st of the last rnd of the hat remains.
Repeat Row 2.
Next Row: Ch 1, sc in blo sc in each st across, sc2tog in the last and first last rnd sts; turn. (8 sts)
Final Row: Skipping the sc2tog, blo sc in each remaining st across; break yarn leaving a 12″ tail. (7 sts)
Sew the Brim edges together using the whip stitch, joining first and last rows. Be sure to work into the BLO of the last row to maintain the ribbed look.
Optional: Sew Pom snap to top of hat centered on Rnd 1.

Is the round for the large adult size supposed to be wobbly? I've started and frogged so many times because I can't tell if this is how it's supposed to be or if I'm doing something wrong?

Hi, I can't figure out round 5 of the adult small. I've done it over and iver but I don't get a 60 stitch round out of the directions as I'm reading them. Is there another way to write it with more details that might be more clear? I'm at least 15 stitches short the way I'm reading it.

Hi. I love this pattern and i am trying to work the adult size for my daughter. While not a very experienced crochet person, I knit and I can follow patterns well. However, I have gotten to round 5 without any problem, but once I finish the round 6, I got a lot ore stitched than the 64 that I was supposed to have. Not sure what I am doing incorrectly, but I have tried that row for 5 times and I cannot get right and end up with only 64 stitches. What am I reading wrong? Thanks

Indeed I have and I still cannot finish with 64 for the adult size. I even tried skipping the next stc after the fptrp and still got more than 64. If I follow the video, I end up with near 80 stitches. So, I am at loss on what I am doing incorrectly.

What is the purpose of the chain less starting double crochet stitch? Why not just do a DC?

Normally you have to start a round of dc with a ch 3, or perhaps a ch 2, as the turning chain. This eliminates the turning chain and the tell-tale seam it creates. 🙂 You can do whatever you prefer though, as described in the Notes above.

I started making it for my husband as an anniversary gift but even the large is to tight on his head....... so my son very happily took it for himself. Do you have any advice on how I should increase the size....... would it be best to increase from the very first row? So start with16 and then second row 20 and so on?

Wow, thank you, Lani! The easiest way would be to go up a hook size! The largest size above does start with 16, so if you missed that it might help. Otherwise, you would need to start with 20 sts in rnd 1 and adjust from there. 🙂

Unfortunately, that would be a top down rewrite of the whole hat. My best recommendation would be to use a thinner yarn and smaller hook.

I am on rows 10-21 for the slouch . It says to repeat 6-9. Does that mean that for row 10, I repeat 6-9 and then row 11, I repeat 6-9, and row 12, I repeat 6-9? Does that mean that I am doing 3 rows each per 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21? Or, when I repeat rows 6-9, does that mean that they count as 3 rows (10, 11, 12), etc. I am stuck.

Hi, I keep going back and forth between your video and the written pattern. I am working on the large size. In the smaller size, there are originally 15 fpdc. Is this the same for the large? My stitch count is correct, but for round 5, it just isn’t working! I keep finishing with a large number of leftover stitches not worked at the end. The first several times I do the stitches of round 5, everything seems to be lining up, but the further I go , the more sc I need to work in from behind the posts. So eventually I get to the point where all 3 sc are behind the 2 posts I just joined. Every. Single. Time. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong because the stitch count is correct if I just sc in the last 8 or so I have left. Can you help?

Thanks for your speedy reply! I made 2 mistakes. First, I used 15 fpdc instead of 16. Second, I can’t really see the stitch I’m supposed to be skipping. So I am using those little counters on every stitch I’m supposed to skip. I precount for the entire round with these and then the round goes by super fast and I don’t need to worry about adding extra or leaving any off.

Oh my! That would be huge! ♥ I've been working on it for a bit and I think it would take a bit of a redesign. But basically, you'd want to increase only to either 36 or 48 sts before going to the working even rows.

If I am using a chain 3 instead of a CSDC in the first st (like in round 6 of the adult size), would I then crochet my first double into the second stitch and skip over the first stitch? Hi Clara! Yes, you'd need to adjust the pattern a bit, but I'd start by crocheting 48 sc around a hairband, then work a dc in each of those stitches, and then try to approximate Rnd 5, and go from there! 🙂

I am having trouble with making the adult hat. I was able to make the children's hat. Yet I get to the round 7 and I am not able to skip the stitch between 3 single crochets. As I go around the peeks of treble crochet together don't line up.

Hi, I'm so excited to try this pattern to make a hat for my SIL. She says her head is 22 1/2. She would also like it to be a tighter beanie with earflaps with braids. Since this is a top down hat I'm thinking that will be possible. Would appreciate your thoughts on if you think that's possible and whether, in light of it and her head size, you think I should make the small or the large? Thank you so much!

Hi Karen! I would base the size on your gauge - if your gauge is a bit smaller than mine, then make the large.
