Crochet Nativity by Bianca Santos Book Giveaway

October 22, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 11 Comments

Crochet Nativity by Bianca Santos Book Giveaway on Moogly

Crochet Nativity: Complete Instructions for 10 Dolls by Bianca Santos is an adorable, brand-new book that debuted in September 2024! Featuring all the key figures in your Christmas crèche, I'll share a peek inside, and then you can enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Crochet Nativity Review

    A Bit About the Author

Crochet Nativity by Bianca Santos Book Giveaway on MooglyCrochet Nativity is Biance Santos' (aka Bianca Esmanhoto) debut book! Her website is Crochetniacs.com, and she sells her designs individually in her Crocehtniacs Etsy shop. They are all adorable!

"Bianca Esmanhoto is a former military sergeant who is passionate about arts and teaching. Crochet started as a stress relief from her air traffic controller job, won her heart, and soon gained exclusive dedication in her life. Her creative and somewhat restless mind is always looking for more, and so her business, Crocheniacs, was born. She says, “Writing this book is a dream and by far one of the most amazing accomplishments of my life."" Read more here.

Now let's dive into Crochet Nativity: Complete Instructions for 10 Dolls!

Inside Crochet Nativity: Complete Instructions for 10 Dolls

If you're thinking it's too early to talk Christmas, think again! If you're going to start crocheting for holidays 2024, now is the time!

"Crochet the holy family and their visitors for your Christmas display!

Patterns include Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, three wise men, angel, sheep, cow, and donkey. Each pattern includes row-by-row instructions and photos as needed to explain details. Each character has special details that set them apart, such as crocheted hair, robe, crown, and accessories. The animals are adorable and ready for play!"

    Crochet Nativity Table of Contents

While there is a small section on how to read the patterns and block your creations, this book is all about the 10 adorable patterns! All the patterns are made using a 2.2mm crochet hook and Circulo yarns - Amigurumi, Cléa, and Anne Sparkle. These range in weight from 0 to 2, creating these small figures. Joseph and Mary are about 11cm tall, while the baby Jesus measures 7cm long.

    Crochet Nativity Patterns

Of course, you can use whatever yarns you like - and make much bigger figures if preferred! Just be sure to adjust your hook to your yarn, and create a nice tight fabric for stuffing. Besides the yarn, hook, stuffing, and patterns, all you'll need to complete the set are safety eyes, glue, and a bit of craft wire.

    Crochet Nativity - Sample Patterns

There are several sample pages shown on Amazon, so we can take a look at them together here! As you can see above, the patterns are written in "amigurumi style." It's also super important to read the notes for this book on Page 4 - she uses a yarn under rather than yarn over, and the pieces are worked in a spiral - so be sure to have some stitch markers handy too!

    Crochet Nativity - Sample Patterns

And I love that this page (above) shows some of the great tips and techniques that are shared in this book! Working through these patterns will teach you so much about making amigurumi, and creating crochet dolls! There are so many photos and instructions here, it really is a treasure in only 47 pages.

    Block #21:

    Granada Grand Square

    by Mamas2Hands

    MooglyCAL2024 - Block 21 courtesy of Mamas2Hands

Above you can see the square that Andee made. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors of Red Heart With Love! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my last Navy one as I work through the rainbow - one more color to go! The white and light gray are being carried throughout.)

    MooglyCAL2024 - Block 21 courtesy of Mamas2Hands

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 21

My Notes: The Grenada Grand Square is a quick and pleasing pattern to crochet - I made it in one evening! This square is center out, and features the V stitch, creating a lacy and drapey square.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle (optional), STDC - Standing Double Crochet, CSDC - Chainless Starting Double Crochet (optional), and seamless join.

Sizing: To get the size just right, I ended up stopping at Round 13. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    A: White
    B:
    Navy
    C:
    Light Gray

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

This month's Designer Showcase features the delightful Kelly Baum-Sehon  - aka the Cocky Crocheter! A Bit About the Designer

Kelly Baum-Sehon's cable designs caught my eye immediately - and his wonderful use of color. He has designed two patterns for the MooglyCAL t00 - the Golden Braid Square and the Perfect Squares Square! Here's a bit about Kelly in his own words:

Cocky Crocheter: Designer Showcase on Moogly

Kelly is a former middle-school math teacher, now turned full-time crochet designer, who has been crocheting for over half his life. Starting with a few scarf patterns, he has now found a love for designing crochet wearables, especially sweaters.

He is the first man from Oklahoma (second in the USA) to have earned the Master Certificate of Advanced Stitches and Techniques from the Crochet Guild of America. He lives in Oklahoma with his husband, Charlie, and their two lovable but ornery cats - Sullivan and Drake. Aside from crochet, Kelly enjoys playing video games, watching YouTube videos, reading about history and mythology, and drinking as much cold brew coffee and red wine as he can.

Crochet Hats in Every Size with babé crochet Hat Templates!

October 8, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 33 Comments

Crochet Hats in Every Size with babé crochet Hat Templates! Giveaway on Moogly!

Hat season is on the horizon, and that means it's the perfect time for another babé crochet Hat Templates giveaway! Any time I go to make or design a crochet hat, I pull out my set of templates, knowing that I'll get the right fit, every time, no math needed! Most recently, I used them to help create the Woven Warmth Hat - they never stay idle for long! They work just as well for knitters, so check out this amazing tool for all hat makers, and enter to win a set of your own here on Moogly - we're giving away a set each to TWO lucky winners!

Disclaimer: This giveaway is sponsored by babé crochet. All opinions are my own.

Woven Warmth Hat - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

New to the babé crochet Hat Templates?

If you haven't spotted these before, you are in for a treat! They revolutionize the hat making process, making it so you don't have to consult charts or tape measures or try it on again and again (though that might be part of the fun). babé crochet hat templates tell you how big (or small) to make your hats to fit every size - no math or tape measures needed! Here's a video I made on TikTok with more info on how they work. It was for a previous giveaway... but this one is just the same, with a later date!

@mooglyblog babé crochet hat templates are a life saver. 3 sets need new homes, anywhere in the world, but only until November 28, 2023 😉🌏🥳 @babecrochetco #mooglyblog #crochet #hats #crochethats #learntocrochet #fyp ♬ Chill Day - LAKEY INSPIRED

These are genuinely ridiculously easy to use. Working your hat top-down (crown to brim), put the center of your first round over the hole. Then, you match the size of your flat circle to the top of the curve. Once that is achieved, work even until it's the length of the template. This works for bucket hats too - I also used them to create the Casual Bucket Hat!

Making a Bucket Hat with babé crochet Hat Templates

No more fussing about sizing! Instead, you can grab the template for the size of the hat you're making and toss it in your project bag. If you crochet for a big family - or craft fairs - you can put together a set of templates with your most needed sizes to whip them up faster than ever! Great for all your holiday travel and vacations!

    Babé Crochet Hat Templates

By Once, Use It for Life

I've been using them for years - ever since I first learned about them! And I can tell that the set I have will last my entire crochet career, and keep getting used. These hat templates are made from strong plastic and each is embossed with its "Tool Number." You can see how these work on the chart below. You'll get a chart with each set, as well as a wire ring to keep the templates and chart organized, and a tutorial on how to use the templates.

Each full set includes baby to adult head sizes from Newborn all the way up to Adult XL (Head circumferences of 34.95cm up to 61.6cm -- 13 ¾" up to 24 ¼’) - perfect!

    babé crochet hat templates sizes

If you've been reading Moogly for a while, you know that I'm a big fan of babé crochet Hat Templates - I've lost count of how many giveaways we've done! So as long as she's willing to share, I'll keep sharing them with all of you! ♥

At 6" wide, it's just the right size for your personal peanut butter cup stash or *maybe* sharing with your coworkers. To make it stand up strong, the yarn is held tripled - but don't worry, you can do it with (less than) one skein of Red Heart Super Saver!

    Block #19:

Log Cabin Granny Crochet Blanket Square

    by Blankets With Heart

    MooglyCAL2024 - Block 19

Above you can see the square that Lindsey made, featuring 3 colors of Caron One Pound. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors of Red Heart With Love! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my first Navy one as I work through the rainbow! The white and light gray are being carried throughout.)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 19

My Notes: The Log Cabin Granny Crochet Blanket Square keeps you entertained in every round! This square is center out, with color and stitch changes that create a unique look. I followed Lindsey's color plan, but I'm excited to see how all of yours turn out! The pattern itself is easy to follow - tech edited, tested, and written by a professional tech editor!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: BLO - Back Loop Only, Magic Circle, Third Loop (Back Bar) Crochet, CSDC - Chainless Starting Double Crochet, STSC - Standing Single Crochet, STDC - Standing Double Crochet and seamless join.

Sizing: To get the size just right, I worked the very last round as single crochet rather than half double crochet.

    A: Navy
    B: White
    C: Light Gray

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone Review

    A Bit About the Author

Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone Giveaway on Moogly Sascha Blase-Van Wagendonk has written a bunch of books, with at least 4 of them translated to English - and they're pretty darn popular! You might have visited her site A La Sascha, or seen her adorable ragdoll designs!

"When I started a small hobby blog in 2009, I never dreamed that my passion for crocheting would become such a big part of my life!"

From the moment I started with needlework, I quickly became completely fascinated by knitting and crocheting. Making quickly turned into designing and designing became writing. This is now reflected in a nice list of books and translations!

I get a lot of joy from making and thinking up new designs, stitch patterns and cuddly toys. The trick is to stay original and combine beauty with practical applications. Needlework is currently very popular again and I hope to contribute to this with modern designs and patterns. I prefer to make scarves, clothes, accessories and rag dolls.

In addition to crocheting and designing, I am happily married and the mother of two daughters, a son and a dachshund!"

Now let's dive into Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone!

Inside Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone

"Crochet hats and mittens for the whole family!

With all patterns sized for newborn through adult large, you can make warm and woolly mittens and hats for all. Novice crocheters can start with the easy December Hat and Mittens or a simple headband, while those with more advanced skills may want to jump right in with the Celtic Cable. Most items are unisex; personalize with color choices to make each item one of a kind.

There are 7 designs for hats and headbands in a variety of styles and 4 mitten patterns, including one in the popular fingerless style that can also have a flap to keep fingers warm. Most are in the intermediate skill range, and illustrated tutorials for basic stitches and techniques make the patterns accessible for beginners. More complex stitches are given in written instructions as well as being illustrated in crochet stitch diagrams.

With classic styles in a wide range of sizes, Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone is sure to become your go-to book for all your gift-giving needs."

Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone Giveaway on Moogly

"Only" 11 designs? Don't let that fool you! With 120 pages, Sascha provides patterns that could keep your hook busy for years to come. Each pattern offers so many sizes, meaning you can make these over and over again, in new colors, for the whole family! Mix and match, add poms and fun trim, and you'll never run out of stitches!

Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone Giveaway on Moogly

The December Mittens and Hat, Jewel Beret, Ollie's Mittens and Hat, Celtic Cable Hat and Headband, Double Twist Headband, and Graphic Hat all include 6 sizes each. The Fingerless Mittens and Celtic Cable Mittens patterns include 5 sizes each. All of the patterns are shown in 4-ply sock yarn, making this a wonderful book to use with all those one-off skeins in your stash!

Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone Giveaway on Moogly

All of the patterns are attractive, solid, and practical. The "extra bits" of the book are short and/or super useful, including how to make a cord to connect mittens, making a bow, making a pom pom, and adding labels.

Crochet Hats and Mittens for Everyone Giveaway on Moogly

Overall, it's a super useful book for crochet hats and mittens and headbands - for yourself, for your family, for your friends, for craft fairs, and of course - for charity!

Spooky Eyeball Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Are Eyeballs Kind of Having a Halloween Moment?!

I've already designed a Plush Pumpkin Basket, as well as a Ghost Squish and a Bat Squish - and of course, the Cat Squish can be turned into a Black Cat Squish with just a yarn color switch. I've even shared a quick pattern for turning all your Squishes into Vampires! So I started looking around at the hot new Halloween decor out this year to see "who" I'd missed - and what I saw... saw me back!

Spooky Eyeball Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

I'm seeing eyeballs everywhere! And what shape could be more perfect for adding to our Halloween Squish lineup? The Spooky Eyeball Squish is cozy and squishy, just the right touch for holiday decor.

    Bernat Blanket for Big Blinks!

There are a bunch of lovely possible eye colors to choose from in Bernat Blanket - change the color of the iris to match your own, and make a pair to stare down any ghouls! The veins are optional - if they are just too much, just leave them off! This squish is made from just yarn and the stuffing, so no need to worry about safety eyes or other bits!

    Block #18:

    Perfect Squares Square

    by The Cocky Crocheter

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 18 Courtesy of The Cocky Crocheter

Above you can see the square that Kelly made, featuring 2 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my third and last Peacock one as I work through the rainbow! The white and light gray are being carried throughout.)

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 18 Courtesy of The Cocky Crocheter

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 18

My Notes: The Perfect Squares Square uses a lot of math in its conception - but don't worry, all you need to know how to do is count! This square grows out from one corner, making it easy to adjust for size. The pattern itself is short, but there are lots of notes you'll want to read through before you begin. Kelly uses a unique increase - it's not what you're used to! I did end up adding one more round for the border to get fully to size.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: BLO - Magic Circle, BLO - Back Loop Only, Third Loop Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: After I thought I was done, I needed to add another round of sc to the border to get to size.

Change colors every 2 rows, cycling through Light Gray, Peacock, and White; work the Border with White.

This square required a strong blocking. I used the a combination of steaming and the wet blocking method.

Make It Crochet: Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features the amazing and iconic Kim Guzman of Make It Crochet! I've admired her work since I first learned to crochet, and was lucky enough to take a class from her several years ago - get 5 of her free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

    A Bit About the Designer

Kim Guzman is a Tunisian crochet OG - a true expert in the field, with an amazing and impressive resumé! Here's a bit about Kim in her own words:

Make It Crochet: Designer Showcase on Moogly

Kim started her first crochet pattern writing website in 1998 and sold her first book in 1999. After working on the site for 20 years and authoring over 20 books, she needed some time away and sold her original website in order to branch out with her son in the recipe writing field. Once her son Christian had a firm foot in the door with the recipe site, Kim decided that it was time to bring out the hooks again and her new site, MakeItCrochet was born.

Although the site is still new, with only about 75 free crochet patterns right now, Kim has big plans for the future. She will still be providing Tunisian crochet patterns, of course. It's her favorite crochet technique and she has more Tunisian crochet patterns on Ravelry than any other individual designer. There will also be regular crochet patterns to balance it out, though. About 25% are Tunisian crochet right now.

Look out for many new designs, tutorials and videos in the future of MakeItCrochet as Kim brings her love of crochet and teaching to your fingertips.

Basically, you can make the Woven Warmth Hat, Woven Warmth Crochet Scarf, Woven Warmth Crochet Mittens - or any medium-weight acrylic patterns you love! - and send them in to Warm Up America - be sure to use the #moogly and share your projects on social media too, to help spread the word! While this specific drive is over, they continue to collect hats, scarves and mittens every autumn! ♥

Warm Up America! & Moogly Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive!

Have I Just Invented a New Stitch Pattern?

So when I set out to make this set, I wanted to use Red Heart Super Saver Brushed and basic stitches, but keep it interesting... little did I know where my hook was going to lead me! Now, for the mittens, it was just a detail, but in the meantime...

Woven Warmth Crochet Mittens - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

I started playing around, combining a little bit of interlocking crochet, maybe a touch of mosaic... and I came up with something I don't think I've seen before. I consulted other designers, but they couldn't pin it down as one thing either. So if you've seen this stitch pattern before, please let me know! As for now, I'm calling the specific stitch a WTr - Woven Treble.

This stitch pattern is created by working two rows of mesh in one color, and then weaving the first row of mesh in the next color through those rows. Right and left-handed videos are included, no worries!

I first figured it out with the scarf pattern - and then translated it for the hat and mittens. I do recommend you try the scarf first when learning this stitch - it's a lot easier in rows than in rounds.

Woven Warmth Crochet Mittens - Closeup of cuff

For the mittens, I wanted to stay practical - so the fun woven stitches are only featured as an *optional* fold up cuff. You can make these mittens plain - without the decorative cuff - to match any crochet hat and scarf set! (And yes, deadlines hit hard - I'll be adding a few pics with both finished mittens soon hahah!)

The fabric this stitch makes is thick without being heavy, and creates lots of pockets of air for warmth. And while it's new and different, the stitches themselves aren't difficult - though I have used post stitches for ribbing at the brim. The hardest part was picking a "wrong side" and a "right side" - I love them both!

Warm Up America! & Moogly Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive 2024!

September 3, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 7 Comments

Warm Up America! & Moogly Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive!

I'm so excited to announce the Warm Up America! & Moogly Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive!

Warm Up America! is an amazing nonprofit, most known for its afghan drives. But they are just as committed to providing clothing for people in need. And this September, they asked us to help them get out the word about their Hat, Scarf & Mittens Campaign - so of course we said yes! Read on to see how you can help spread the warmth this winter!

Warm Up America! & Moogly Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive!

    What Is Warm Up America!?

"The Warm Up America! foundation, a 501C3 nonprofit, was founded in 1991 by Evie Rosen. It is committed to motivating, training and coordinating volunteers to knit and crochet afghans and clothing for people in need. To this end, the foundation:

    1. Promotes, trains and encourages individual volunteers and groups to adopt the WUA! program as a local activity.
    2. Supports and assists these local volunteers by providing information and instructional materials through its website and newsletters.
    3. Acts as a collection point for sections, oversees assembly into completed blankets and ships items to various charitable organizations and agencies for distribution to the homeless and persons in need. "

The squares get a lot of press, but this month they want to focus on wearables - so needed in the coming months! So we're working on them to help get the word out. I've designed a whole new set of patterns for this drive, that are all free here on Moogly - the Woven Warmth Crochet Hat, Woven Warmth Crochet Scarf, and Woven Warmth Crochet Mittens!

Warm Up America! & Moogly Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive!

Of course, you can make any hat, scarf, and mittens patterns you like - and I've got some more great free crochet and knit patterns linked for you below. But here are all the important details!

How Can You Help and Join this Campaign?

The Hat, Scarf & Mittens Campaign will run from September 3rd to October 4th - please ensure all your items are in the office by October 4th!
(But if you're late, still send them in, they always need more!)

    • Make an adult or child hat and/or scarf and/or mittens (Any pattern, not just Moogly patterns! They do have an excess of baby hats at this time.)
    • Scarf size 65"-70" long by 6" wide
    • Use medium weight #4, acrylic yarn
    • Be sure to weave in all your ends!
    • Help spread the word! Share your projects on social media with the #moogly and tag Warm Up America
    • Please include a donation form with "Moogly" on the campaign line! CLICK HERE to get the donation form
    • Mail your items to:
    Warm Up America!
    ATT: Moogly Campaign
    3740 N. Josey Lane Suite 126
    Carrollton, TX 75007

And We Have An Update - as of September 24!

I got this message from Cherie at WUA!

"I just wanted to give you an update so that you can share with your followers. As of today, we have received 122 items (hats & scarves) for your campaign specifically. Please make sure to tell your followers to write MOOGLY on the donation form so that we can count it for you. If they don't put that on the form or on a piece of paper, we have no idea that it's for your campaign. Also, if they sent us items for this campaign and forgot to put "Moogly" then have them email me and I will add it to their donation so we can count it." Thanks so much all!

Featuring the New Coats and Clark Yarn Zip - Again!

    Yarnspiraitons Yarn Zip

Okay, so August became the month of zipper pouches on Moogly - thanks to the debut of this amazing brand-new zipper product from Coats and Clark - available now on Yarnspirations!

"The Coats & Clark Yarn Zip features a loosely woven channel for easy yarn attachment, perfect for knitting, crocheting, and stitching projects. Use loops, crochet, knit, or stitch with matching yarn to secure. Available as a separating zipper for garments and a closed-end zipper for accessories and ¾ zip garments. Enhance your crafting with ease and style!"

Tipsy Granny Zipper Pouch - free crochet pattern on Moogly

I was so excited when these came out, that I immediately ordered the whole set - and now I've ordered more! For the Tipsy Granny Zipper Pouch, I used the Black 9" version. I sewed it in with more yarn -  the woven channel makes it easy to keep a nice straight line and genuinely takes away 90% of the trouble with zippers most crocheters have.

    Learn to Crochet Short Rows

Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn was specifically designed to create 5 color, 5" granny squares with no breaking the yarn. But you don't have to use it to make granny squares!

Tipsy Granny Zipper Pouch - free crochet pattern on Moogly

I've been eager to make a pattern using this yarn with short rows! Short row crochet is pretty easy - the only stitches and skills needed for this pattern are single crochet, back loop only, and single crochet decreases (sc2tog). Combined with a self-striping yarn, short rows create a dynamic, textured fabric that is very different from what you get from just working in standard rows and rounds. It leans and move in wedges - hence the name "Tipsy Granny." And I love the way it turned out here!

Tipsy Granny Zipper Pouch - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Tipsy Granny Zipper Pouch is about 9" wide, and 6" tall, and you should be able to get 3 out of each skein of the recommended yarn. This is a great size for school supplies, odds and ends, makeup, and could even be used as a little clutch! Lining is optional, but recommended if you're going to add hooks or pencils. Add a simple wrist strap if desired, and you might find yourself making one to match every outfit...

    Block #17:

    Ocean Flower Crochet Square

    by Fiber Flux

MooglyCAL2023 Block 17 Courtesy of Fiber Flux

Above you can see the square that Jennifer made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my second Peacock one as I work through the rainbow! The white and light gray are being carried throughout.)

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 17

My Notes: The Ocean Flower Crochet Square is pretty, preppy, and full of possibilities! Four smaller squares are joined into one big square -  a little mini-CAL in one block! You can make them all the same, or mix it up - I know the Facebook group will be chock full of gorgeous options and ideas! You can make this square in one long evening or afternoon.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Puff Stitch, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: This pattern has several border rounds, which is great because it makes it easy to adjust for the size you've landed at after the squares! I skipped Border Rnd 2 as my square was coming out a bit big.

    Color A: White
    B:
    Peacock
    C:
    Light Gray

This square required a strong blocking. I used the a combination of steaming and the wet blocking method.

Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon, and Lime

August 19, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 2 Comments

Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon and Lime

I'm so excited to finally share the Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon, and Lime - made with Bernat Blanket! Cute, cuddly, soft, and squishy - and a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

And a Yarn Kit on Yarnspirations!

The Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon and Lime are going to be featured as a free PDF download on Yarnspirations soon - I'll drop the link in this post as soon as it's ready! But in the meantime, they've given me permission to go ahead and share them here. Because the yarn kit is already on sale! CLICK HERE!

Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon and Lime

"Find everything you need to make a tropical trio of stuffie toys, with this collection of curated shades selected by our Stitch Ambassador Tamara Kelly of Moogly. This set features our super cozy Bernat Blanket in three fruity shades to create a mini version of Tamara's well-loved squish pattern. Tamara's trio includes a pineapple, lime, and lemon using the shades Sunsoaked, Malachite, and Taupe."

Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon and Lime

I cannot express how much of an honor and thrill it was to see the Moogly logo right on the Yarnspirations home page - and how much of a great deal this yarn bundle is! It's enough yarn to make dozens of lemons and limes, and a few friendly pineapples to share with friends!

Squeeze the Day with these Juicy Free Crochet Patterns!

The Crochet Pineapple, Lemon and Lime are made extra soft and cuddly in Bernat Blanket yarn. Using an 8mm crochet hook should create a fabric tight enough to hide any stuffing, but you do want to stuff it lightly - just enough to be huggable and hold it's shape. If you have a looser gauge, going down to a 7mm hook should do the trick! And it's machine washable, in case of extra sticky hugs - just make sure you get a washable fiberfill too.

Crochet Fruit Squish Set: Pineapple, Lemon and Lime

The faces on the Crochet Fruit Squish Set are, of course, optional - if you've got a little one with a play kitchen, these are the perfect addition! But please remember that safety eyes are generally only considered safe for ages 3 and up. So if you are crocheting for a little one, embroidered-on eyes may be the better option!

    Blue Whale Zipper Pouch

Blue Whale Zipper Pouch - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Blue Whale Zipper Pouch is a cute and fun way to store school supplies, odds and ends, and all your secrets - made with Bernat Blanket! Swallow up random messes and get ready for back-to-school with this free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Featuring the New Coats and Clark Yarn Zip

    Yarnspiraitons Yarn Zip

We’re swimming in uncharted waters here, trying a brand new zipper product from Coats and Clark!

Blue Whale Zipper Pouch - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

I was so excited when these came out, that I immediately ordered the whole set! For this project, I used the White 9" version. While I didn't crochet it in, I was able to use a large yarn needle and the Bernat Blanket to attach it - the woven channel makes it so easy to keep a nice straight line too!

Blue Whale Zipper Pouch - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Have a Whale of Time Making this Pouch

Make a big splash with this adorable Blue Whale Zipper Pouch! Bernat Blanket yarn, worked with an 8mm crochet hook, should create a fabric tight enough to have a bit of stiffness and keep its shape. If you have a looser gauge, going down to a 7mm hook should work! And it's machine washable, for those inevitable messes.

Blue Whale Zipper Pouch - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

I based the Blue Whale Zipper Pouch on a small amigurumi pattern I've used for in-person classes to teach amigurumi. I would love to see someone make it in giant Bernat Blanket Big for an even larger whale - using the 22" Yarn Zip! The version shown here is perfect for school and office supplies, and anything else about that size. It would be super cute in a bedroom, bathroom, classroom, nursery - you name it!

Blue Whale Zipper Pouch - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Why the crown? Why not?! It's optional - leave it off if you don't like it, but I think it adds a fun touch. Now let's dive into the details!

    Block #16:

    Aurora Square

    by Pink Mambo

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 16 Courtesy of Pink Mambo

Above you can see the square that Carolyn made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors! (I'm doing a stash buster, so these colors will change throughout the year. This is my first Peacock one as I work through the rainbow!)

MooglyCAL2024 - Block 16 Courtesy of Pink Mambo

    Details for MooglyCAL2024 Block 16

My Notes: The Aurora Square uses basic stitches to make a beautiful block. With only about 11 rounds, this one works up easily in an afternoon or evening. (I know a few of you will have it made within the next hour or so!) It's a great square for beginners who are ready for a small challenge, and a relaxing make for everyone else!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: This pattern offers several finishing options, depending on what size you're at! I ended up working Rnd 11 as a rnd of dc, but then I was still a little short (my own fault) so I added another rnd of sc. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

I followed the color scheme with my colors, except for the last 2 rounds.
    Color A:
    Light Gray
    B:
    Peacock
    C:
    White
Rnd 11: White (worked as dc)
Extra Rnd 12: White (added a rnd of sc for size)

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

    A Bit About the Designer

Pam has a wonderful sense of color, and her projects are all just so happy! Here's a bit about Pam in her own words:

    Best Crochet Life: Designer Showcase

Hi! I'm Pam. I immigrated to Australia from Scotland in 2009 and started crocheting after my youngest daughter was born in 2012. I create vibrant, easy-to-follow crochet patterns with super cool, no-fluff stitch photo tutorials that help YOU to live your BEST CROCHET LIFE!
I'm blessed to live just 600 meters from the Pacific Ocean with my husband, two daughters, and three cats. When I'm not crocheting, you'll find me running or walking on the beach or curled up with a good book.
I have crocheted all over Australia, including across the Nullarbor Plain, at the base of Uluru, surrounded by crocodile-infested swamp in the Northern Territory, next to the wood burner in small country towns, under aircon in tropical Far North Queensland, and in many other places! 🙂

I believe we are ALL creative and that creativity is vital to wellbeing. I recently discovered that I am neurodivergent which explains a lot about my ability to hyperfocus for hours straight on designs and yet often get distracted by a new design before getting the earlier one(s) published!

Crochet has been a massive part of my self-care toolkit for over a decade through early motherhood, post-natal depression, marital breakdown and reconciliation, throughout my journey as the primary carer for my neurodiverse family and now into perimenopause on HRT. Vibrant colours bring me so much joy, and crochet's meditative and design aspects are my happy therapy every day! I am eternally grateful for our beautiful yarncraft.
