Is it Easy to Crochet a Christmas Stocking?
It all depends on the pattern! Like anything else, it can be complicated if you want it to be. To make it easier, look for:
- Skill Level: Easy
- Worsted Weight or larger yarn
- Something with minimal color changes
This pattern fits the bill! And it's a free crochet pattern download on Yarnspirations! Personally, I like to recommend trying a stocking to crocheters who are interested in crocheting socks. An easy crochet stocking pattern is a great intro to turning a heel, and making a toe, without worrying about gauge or making a matching pair!

This Christmas Stocking pattern is great for beginners, made primarily of the single crochet stitch (sc)! There are a few dc stitches in the edging at the cuff and decreases at the toe, but there are no magic circle or other tricky crochet stitches - we work cuff down. The finished size of the stocking is about 16" long and it uses worsted weight yarn. Pay particular attention to the heel and use those stitch markers and you'll stay on the right side of Santa this year!
And this pattern is ready for any of your embellishments! Try adding their name or other fun details using surface crochet, or add their initials with the Moogly Crochet Alphabet! Yarnspirations also has a great Crochet Alphabet now too!

Thankyou so much for this adorable pattern and video! I’m such a beginner and have almost completed this! However I am realising I wish it were a bit wider. For my next stocking, how hard would it be to make it maybe 1.5-2” wider? I realize that would affect the body and the cuff and the heel, but can’t figure it out in my head how many extra stitches of each, I’m too beginner 😅 if it’s too complicated to answer in a simple message here I understand, thankyou for sharing this pattern!

I'm just getting started on this and I agree with Ariel. I would like the leg of the stocking to be wider to fit things in. But maybe my understanding of the gauge is wrong? It appears to me the stocking part of the pattern would be 12 inches based on the gauge. Is this correct? I appreciate your comments. This is a lovely pattern.

Hi Pam! Yes, your math is correct - so it's about 6" wide laid flat. For a larger stocking without having to do math, you can use a thicker yarn and larger hook, or hold this yarn tripled!
