My Take on the Susan Bates Twist & Lock Deluxe Set with Bag

When Susan Bates Twist + Lock Deluxe Hooks first debuted, I fell in love! The large, ergonomic handle and the space saved in my notions bag are still appreciated every time I crochet. It's so handy! Basically, the hooks and yarn cutters go into the handle - pointing out, or pointing into the hook (super handy for throwing into the project bag when delicate yarns are in use).

The cutter is safe inside if you are worried about it snagging on the working yarn or project, and when you flip it around it is great for cutting anything from thread to bulky weight yarn. Definitely, TSA approved! I'm a fan!

My Notes: The Solace Square is a gorgeous, entertaining square that has a few surprise moves - in other words, trust the pattern! Also be sure to read through all the special stitches before you begin. As always, Carolyn has created a beautiful, center-out square for us. They are always a hit, and great for most skill levels. Perfect for finding a bit of solace with your yarn for a wonderful evening.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Standing Double Crochet, Post Stitches, and seamless join.

Sizing: After Rnd 12, my square measured 10.5". So I decided to work Rnd 13 as an hdc rnd and then add an extra rnd of sc. Everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    1 : Cornsilk
    2:
    Merlot
    3:
    Cornsilk
    4:
    Boysenberry
    5:
    Cornsilk
    6:
    Mallard
    7:
    Cornsilk
    8 and 9:
    Merlot
    10:
    Cornsilk
    11:
    Boysenberry
    12:
    Cornsilk
    13:
    Mallard
    14 (extra rnd): Black

This square did not really require blocking, but I used the wet blocking method just to make it perfect.

    Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan

Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan is a cozy, cuddly, calming throw pattern! Featuring Bernat Forever Fleece, it's mesmerizing, relaxing, and includes all the sizes, here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

    A Long Time Coming!

I designed the Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan back in 2022, when Bernat Forever Fleece had just launched. I fell in love with the yarn's halo and buttery soft colors. But then the colors I used ended up cut from the roster! And I think they rethought the weight... read on...

Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Comparing the yarn in the blanket to the current version of Bernat Forever Fleece, I believe that it was actually made with Bernat Forever Fleece *Finer* - a Bulky/5 weight yarn. Later, Bernat Forever Fleece was launched as a Super Bulky/6 and the Finer version was added (and then discontinued...) and so this blanket got recorded as using the bigger yarn with too small a hook. I didn't realize this had happened until I went to make the video tutorials.

So now, I'm updating this pattern to call for any Bulky/5 if you want to use the sizing charts. But if you'd like to use the Super Bulky Bernat Forever Fleece, you'll want to bump up to an 8mm. Those blankets will also be a bit larger. I do apologize for the confusion - this one had my scratching my head for a minute there!

At the end of the day, you get to pick your own yarn and colors anyway! So, it's time for the Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan to finally see the light of day. It's too squishy to keep to myself any longer!

While I used 2 colors of yarn, you can of course go rogue here too - that's half the fun! Make the Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan a scrapghan, keep it all one color, it's up to you - and each choice will give it a new look.

Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan - free crochet pattern on Moogly

    Not just a V stitch - a Deep V Stitch!

The Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan features simple stitches worked in interesting places, to great effect! I'm dubbing it a "Deep V" for this pattern, and it's all explained below. And in right and left-handed video tutorials! So it's great for motivated beginners, and it will be a relaxing, meditative make for experienced stitchers.

Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Here on Moogly, I like to include every size when it comes to blankets. And the Butter Ripple Crochet Afghan includes every size from Baby up to Cal King! I've also included the stitch multiple so you can customize it to any size you like. If you need help, or think there is a size I've missed, let me know so I can add it to the list!

Ready to get started? Check the chart below to see what size you want to make, gather your yarn, grab your crochet hook, and let's get stitching!

February 11, 2025 by Tamara Kelly 55 Comments

    GoSadi Twice Sheared Sheep Giveaway

I was lucky enough to attend Vogue Knitting Live in January of 2025, and I brought home lots of exciting new yarns, tools, and of course - swag! And I managed to snag a few extras to share with all of you. I've got some lovely items from GoSadi and Twice Sheared Sheep - enter to win your VKL swag below!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

GoSadi - for Designers and Makers

GoSadi is launching this summer, but made its debut at VKL! So if you haven't heard of it before, that's okay. It's a pretty unique site, and as an alpha tester I've seen it develop over the past two years. And I'm amazed! It's already part of my pattern launch routine. Here's their description of what it will do for makers:

"GoSadi is the go-to hub for knitters and crocheters to easily discover, organize, and save patterns from Ravelry, Etsy, designer websites, yarn company sites, and more. Whether searching for specific projects or browsing new designs, GoSadi lets users create "playlists" of their favorite patterns and follow designers to see their latest work. GoSadi simplifies pattern searching so users can focus on creating. Plus, makers can showcase their finished projects on the Makers Landing Page!"

And they provided some great swag for everyone! Here's what's included in this giveaway:

GoSadi Large Tote Bag and Zipper Pouch

Twice Sheared Sheep Quick Gauge Ruler, exclusive Shelli Can Sticker, and GoSadi Measuring Tape

GoSadi Nail File, Pen, and Lanyard

Twice Sheared Sheep - Clever Tools for Makers

Twice Sheared Sheep, on the other hand, has been in business for almost 20 years! I got a chance to sit down with one of their reps, Katie, and she was fantastic - and so excited about their new tools! Their mission is to "share (...) amazing tools with all of my yarn community family" - love that!

At Twice Sheared Sheep you'll find tools for Quilling, Knitting, Crochet, and even some lovely yarn. It's a great place to find things to elevate your stitching experience.

And they too shared some amazing gifts too! In addition to the Quick Gauge shown above, all these items are included in the giveaway:

Twice Sheared Sheep Stitch Markers - these work for both crochet and knitting!

Poma Llama by Twice Sheared Sheep

Twice Sheared Sheep Yarn To Go

Both of these companies were super generous. Not only did I get a set of these items, but I got two more sets, to share with two lucky winners here on Moogly!

GoSadi and Twice Sheared Sheep Giveaway Time!

The GoSadi and Twice Sheared Sheep Giveaway is open to US addresses only. There will be two winners. The giveaway ends March 11, 2025, at 12:15am Central US time. Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 3

My Notes: The Snow Covered Garden Square is a wonderful piece of mosaic crochet! Whether you're a mosiac expert or just a beginner, this pattern is perfect for everyone. That said, you do have to read carefully - the start of each round moves around a bit from row to row! Beyond that, this pattern is almost exclusively single crochet stitches, so don't be nervous, you can do it!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, BLO/FLO - Back Loop Only/Front Loop Only, Standing Single Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to 12" as written.

    1 and 2: Merlot
    3:
    Cornsilk
    4:
    Merlot
    5:
    Cornsilk
    6:

    7:
    Boysenberry
    8:

    9:

    10:

    14:

    16:

    17:
    Black
    18:
    Merlot
    19:

This square did not require blocking, but I used the wet blocking method just to make it perfect.

    Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan

Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan is fun, bold, and a much-requested free crochet pattern on Moogly! Featuring a combo of Bernat Blanket and All-In-One Blanket Granny, it's perfect for showing off your color choices in any size, and a great next step once beginners have the basics down.

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

    Granny Square Gone Rogue!

For the Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan, I combined standard Bernat Blanket in a solid color, with new Bernat All-In-One Blanket Granny. This yarn is designed to let you crochet 10.5" granny squares in 5 colors, without breaking the yarn. But there's no rule saying you can only use it to make granny squares!

Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

In this pattern I decided to use it as a self-striping yarn, and let the colors land where they may. I think this colorway is particularly lovely - and a little bit Valentines-y too! I quickly became accustomed to the look of the joins, and the unique effect they have where the colors meet. The only time I cut out the color joins was for weaving in the ends - and I do suggest you do the same.

Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Of course, you can use two solid colors, get an ombre effect with Bernat Blanket Perfect Phasing, or... well, there are so many versions of Bernat Blanket you could get dozens of different looks and combos! You could even make it a stashbuster and use a different color for every section. I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

The Spike Cluster Stitch - At Last!

In the early days of designing - and cellphones - I came up with the Blue Agave Phone Pouch. It too was a reader request! And in the years since, I've had several requests for a blanket featuring this stitch. I would add it to the list, and other things kept pushing it down. But then something about this yarn told me it was time!

Spike Cluster Stitch Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern on Moogly

This project is perfect for crocheters who can reliably count their stitches and identify where to place the hook. So it's not a first project, but a motivated beginner will be ready soon! Something about this stitch pattern is just so fun, and addicting, you might find that smiling is your new "crochet face!"

Ready to get started? Check the chart below to see what size you want to make, gather your yarn, grab your crochet hook, and let's get stitching!

    NOTES:

If you prefer to avoid using the FSC stitch, you can instead chain the number of stitches desired, plus 1. Skip the ch closest to the hook and sc across. Contine the pattern with Row 2.

If you prefer to avoid using the STSC stitch, you can instead join with a sl st and ch 1, then sc in the first st.

If your colors are not high contrast, you can try carrying them along the side rather than cutting the yarn at every yarn change.

"Sit back and relax as Bernat All-In-One Blanket Granny is easy to use and handles your color changes, removing the complication of switching between yarns and reducing the number of ends so you can focus on your crafting without distractions. Each ball makes four granny squares, with five balls making a full-sized blanket, allowing you to stitch up your next statement piece in no time at all. Perfect for all things home decor, snuggle up under your next granny squares project today!"

    Just The Yarny Facts:

    Content: 100% polyester

    Ball Size: 240g / 8.5 oz, 163 meters / 178 yards

    Care: Machine wash and dry

    Gauge: #6 Super Bulky

Buy It: Available exclusively on Yarnspirations.com

    Debuting in 6 Bold Colorways!

From Valentine's-ready reds and pinks to cozy neutrals, here is the selection so far! The different colors in each skein are not printed onto the yarn, and they are not tied together. Rather, they are joined to each other securely over about 2" of length. I would say sewn, though I'm not sure if that's exactly the right term. The yarn is a little bit stiffer there, but this section gives you more wiggle room for your color changes in each round.

Bernat All-In-One Blanket Granny Yarn Giveaway on Moogly

Each ball of Bernat All-In-One Blanket Granny Yarn will make four motifs, and each square is approximately 10.5 inches in size - CLICK HERE for a tutorial, or watch it below! I found it pretty easy to get the hang of, and adjust my tension to get them to turn out the right away. I also really like that there is some extra length for the last color, meaning you can use this bit to sew them together!

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 2

My Notes: The Christine Quilt Block is a beautiful, beginner-friendly square. perfect for playing with your colors! The layout is indeed reminiscent of quilted blocks, and it works up pretty quickly. This is a wonderful block to relax with in the evening after a hectic day!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Standing Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square measured about 10.25" after Rnd 8, so I added a rnd of dc and that got me to 12".

    A: Mallard
    B:
    Merlot
    C:
    Cornsilk
    D:
    Boysenberry
    Added Rnd: Black

This square required a mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method.

The Rustic Diamond Hat is a simple and versatile crochet beanie pattern that features a simple repeating diamond cluster stitch design! Make it your new favorite hat with this cozy free pattern on Moogly!

Quick and Cozy in Bulky Yarn

Patons Alpaca Blend is a tactile roving style yarn with a gorgeous halo. You can see my video review of Alpaca Blend here! It's a bulky weight yarn, made of 60% Acrylic 22% Wool 10% Nylon 8% Alpaca, so this hat works up quickly.

In this gorgeous Yam colorway, I find the stitching irresistible and so perfect for cooler weather! But there are lots of colors to choose from, so you can make this beanie in your favorite shade. Create your own flawless look!

    Customize it Just for You

In addition to picking your color, you can customize the Rustic Diamond Hat with the amount of slouch! The stitch pattern repeats so you can add (or subtract) rows to get a perfect fit for you. Prefer it without the Diamond relief pattern? Just use hdc sts throughout! For a longer or shorter brim, just add or subtract chains from the first row of the brim. With the video tutorials, this pattern is great for adventurous beginners on up!

And then there's the Pompom! Pick your favorite pom material, size, color, or skip it altogether. Add buttons, a leather tag, whatever makes you happy. For mask wearers, add a button to each side to hook your mask on while keeping your ears warm! Don't forget to add it to your Pinterest crochet board!

    Block #1:

    High Tide Square

    by Jessie At Home

    High Tide Square

Above you can see the square that Jessie made in 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black. Big shoutout to those who encouraged me to add the yellow while I was on the live about the CAL - it definitely makes a difference and was much needed!

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 1

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 1

My Notes: The High Tide Square is a great one to kick off a new year of crochet! Chevrons are highlighted with rows of surface crochet for many color possibilities. Jessie didn't know I was aiming for a stained glass look this year, but I couldn't have asked for one more fitting. Before crocheting the border rounds and top stitching, my square was super wonky and skewed. I was surprised just how well those bits helped straighten it out! So don't let that freak you out if you see the same. A strong blocking helped to finish getting it into shape.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Foundation Double Crochet, Extending a Row with Foundation Stitches, Foundation Stitches Increasing and Decreasing, Standing Double Crochet, Surface Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to size as written, but you can easily add to or omit rounds of sc from the border til you get the size needed!

    Inc Rows 1 - 3: Merlot
    Rows 5 and 5:
    Mallard
    Rows 6 and 7:
    Boysenberry
    Dec Rows 1 and 2:
    Merlot
    Rows 3 and 4:
    Cornsilk
    Rows 5 and 6:
    Boysenberry
    Border Rnds 1 and 2:
    Merlot
    Border Rnd 3:
    Mallard
    Border Rnd 4:
    Cornsilk
    Border Rnd 5:
    Black
    Top Stitching:
    Black

This square required a strong blocking. I used the wet blocking method as well as steaming.

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi: Book Giveaway

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi by Drew Hill is the first officially licensed crochet book featuring the Muppets! Featuring more than a dozen of the most cherished characters, these patterns just make you smile! Take a peek inside below, and then enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Drew Hill

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi is Drew's second book, and it debuted in October of 2024! Here's a bit more about our author:

"Drew Hill is an amigurumi designer and fiber arts enthusiast. He learned to knit at the age of 10 and has been passionate about yarn from that moment on. At 17, Drew picked up a crochet hook and has rarely put it down since. After years of crocheting as a hobby, he decided to take things to the next level and opened Drewbie's Zoo, where he sells finished amigurumi and offers both free and premium patterns.

A graduate of the University of Michigan with a BFA in Theatre Design & Production, Drew has worked as a costume designer and has found ways to sneak his fiber crafts into most productions. These days he spends his time in his craft dungeon, experimenting with new patterns. When he's not working, Drew enjoys playing with his golden retriever, Billy, and eating delicious vegan food."

Now let's dive into The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi!

Inside The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi

"After 70 years of singing and dancing and making people happy, The Muppets are ready to tackle their next wacky performance: getting hooked on crochet! With The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi, you can now crochet your own Muppet amigurumi figures, and the whole gang is here – Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Animal, Gonzo, even Pepé the King Prawn and Rizzo the Rat! Each of these fifteen projects is a fully articulated doll, right down to Animal’s wild hair and Kermit’s pointed collar. With easy-to-follow patterns, and some jokes and fun from The Muppets themselves, The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi will have you ready to put on a show with all your favorite characters."

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi: Book Giveaway

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi is the first book I've been sent for review that had all 3 of my kids excited! They are pretty blasé about yarn stuff after all these years, but The Muppets are beloved by all - we even got a chance to see some of the characters in person at the Jim Henson Exhibit this past weekend!

Visit to the Jim Henson Exhibit

    All Your Favorites Are Here!

So I was super excited to get inside this book, and take a peek at what Drew has made. This is a big, heavy, hardcover book, with thick glossy paper throughout. The photos are large and clear with lots of closeups, and the pattern pages feature large clear print - it's genuinely a joy to peruse and use.

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi: Book Giveaway

The patterns use a variety of medium/4/worsted-weight acrylic yarns, with safety eyes, stuffing, and a small bit of felt completing most characters. The patterns themselves are written in what I would call "amigurumi style," which has an abbreviated format.

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi: Book Giveaway

For instance, where I might write "work 2 sc in each st around," amigurumi patterns would write "(Inc) x6." It takes a little adjusting, but is easy to follow once you get the hang of it - like anything in crochet!

The Muppets Official Crochet Amigurumi: Book Giveaway

I haven't had a chance to make any of the patterns in this book. But the layout is great and the photos look amazing. There are some mixed reviews of it on Amazon currently, so this one might be best for those with more experience crocheting amigurumi.

Create your own Delicious Custom Stripe Pattern!

Once I started crocheting with this yarn, I fell in love! And I decided to let my whims dictate the stripes - I carried all the colors along the inside and just switched as my instinct told me to. Of course, I wrote it all down, so you can do the exact same thing - or you can make it your own with your own color choices and stripe pattern! The Mimosa Crochet Cowl was inspired by the oh-so-juicy colors of Ruby, Lively Mandarin, and Citrine, but I can't wait to see what you mix up too!

The Yarn for the Odds Are Shawl

To make this crochet shawl, I used Caron Colorama Halo Perfect Phasing yarn - just one skein! So this is a wonderful project with which to give it a try. This pattern shows off the beauty of this yarn's truly perfect gradient or ombre. And when you're all finished, there are just 2 ends to weave in! This yarn is available on Yarnspirations.com and on Amazon.com.

    Caron Colorama Halo Perfect Phasing

When I was trying to decide which color to use... I couldn't! So after a little internet polling, I narrowed it down to two. The first version I made features the Lavender Frost colorway, which I took with me on my Craftours trip to England. I quickly fell in love with the stitches and found it to be the perfect meditative project for on the road or relaxing with after a long day.

    Caron Colorama Halo Perfect Phasing

After I got home, I remade it and refined it a bit while making another one, using the Tin and Tan colorway! We were able to film that one as I made it, so there will be very thorough video tutorials for each section, and you'll see how this colorway changes throughout. I can't wait to see it in even more colors - and even other yarns!

    Caron Colorama Halo Perfect Phasing

The Hook for the Odds Are Shawl

For the hook, I will be using a Susan Bates US-K, 6.5 mm Twist and Lock hook. Gauge isn't really important for this pattern, so if you find that you prefer the fabric you get with a J or even an L hook, feel free to use that instead! This is a fuzzy yarn, so you'll want to make sure it's comfortable for you.

The Schedule for the Moogly January 2025 Crochet Along

As always, we've had 24 amazing designs by 24 talented designers! Every year I learn a new tip, trick, stitch, or technique - usually a few! It's such a joy to get to try all these patterns.

You can get the complete list of links to the squares on the post for Block 24! Or if you like to be able to see them all visually on one page, check out the MooglyCAL2024 Pinterest board!

And here's my finished blanket! This year I was smart enough to weave in the ends of each square (well, 22 of them) as I went. So assembling, bordering, and weaving in all my ends was finished in a couple of afternoons.

Beginning MooglyCAL2025, and Wrapping Up MooglyCAL2024

For joining, I used the Flat Braid Join technique and the White yarn. Because this year's blanket is so colorful, I decided to keep the border simple. For the first round I used the White, working a sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-2 space, with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. For the second round of the border, continued with the White and another round of sc. I like the "perforated" look it gives, and I think it suits the overall assembly!

    How the MooglyCAL works

If 2025 will be your first MooglyCAL, then welcome and we're so happy you're here! This is a year-long crochet along, featuring 24 afghan squares or blocks, designed by 24 different professional crochet designers. It started in 2014, and has been getting better every year! Is it the longest-running online crochet-along ever? I think it just might be!

The squares are released every 2 weeks with a post on Moogly, where I share my notes, my version, and helpful links and tutorials. There is a link to the new square at the bottom of my notes, where you can get it directly from the designer!

You can make them all, or pick and choose, add extras - it's up to you! There is nowhere you need to sign up to join, but there is a fantastic Facebook group for the CAL (lots of pattern help there!) and a MooglyCAL2025 Pinterest board you can follow if desired!

Want to Get Notifications in Your Inbox?

You can sign up for the free Moogly weekly newsletter at the very bottom of this page - there's always a link to the latest MooglyCAL post included!

    The Yarn for MooglyCAL2025

And once again, this year I'll once again be using Red Heart With Love - it's my favorite for throws and blankets! Again this year, I've given the designers the option to choose With Love or Caron One Pound. Both are 4-Medium weight and are a good substitute for each other. And this way, they will have more colors to choose from - as do you!

Red Heart With Love vs Caron One Pound

And somehow, I still have more stashbusting to do! This year, I decided to focus on my jewel tones. There's a lot less here now... I'm all out of White for one! I might actually have to restock for the first time in a while.

My Red Heart With Love Stash

Of course, you should pick your own colors - however few or many you want! If you want 12" squares, make sure the yarn is a 4-Medium. If you prefer to use a DK or "3" weight yarn, the squares will likely be about 10" square.

On average, a 12" crochet square uses 150 yds of yarn. To make all 24 squares, plus have extra for joining and borders, I recommend purchasing 4420 yds of yarn total. How you distribute this is up to you! Some people use one color for the whole blanket, others a whole bunch, and some even just pull from stash making a crazy colored blanket! It's up to you!

    The Hook for MooglyCAL2025

For the hook, I will be using a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook for the Moogly Crochet Along, and all the designers will use the 6.0 mm hook of their preference. You can use a smaller hook if you tend to crochet loosely, or a larger hook if you tend to crochet tightly. But I do recommend that you use the same hook throughout the CAL, as that makes final joining easier, as your loops will be closer to the same size.

    The Patterns for MooglyCAL2025

As always, there will be 24 new patterns by 24 fab designers! We have a lot of names from last year, but we always add a couple new ones as others drop out! They are a surprise (to you - not me, haha!) until the square is announced. They are all hand-picked by me, and they have promised that their CAL patterns will remain forever free. If they close down their blogs, then the patterns are to be uploaded to Ravelry.

If a pattern pops up that isn't to your liking, feel free to skip it! You can go back to the previous years' CALs and find a substitute you'd like to try or pick one of your own from the thousands of beautiful afghan squares out there. There is often a lot of inspiration for these in the Facebook Group! We are grateful to all the designers for their hard work and generosity!

    The easiest way to visually browse past year's patterns is via their Pinterest boards: MooglyCAL2024, MooglyCAL2023, MooglyCAL2022, MooglyCAL2021, MooglyCAL2020, MooglyCAL2019, MooglyCAL2018, MooglyCAL2017, MooglyCAL2016, and MooglyCAL2015.

This year's squares will be on a new board: MooglyCAL2025 Pinterest Board

    MooglyCAL Pinterest Boards

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques to help you with the pattern.

In other words - you don't have to already know how to read patterns to participate in this CAL, but you do need to be willing to learn how!

    The Schedule for MooglyCAL2025

The squares are released every two weeks throughout the year, on Thursday mornings at 10am Central US time. We begin in January, and the last square debuts one day early - the day before American Thanksgiving!

    Grapey Goodness Wine Bag

Grapey Goodness Wine Bag free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Grapey Goodness Wine Bag is a gorgeous one-skein luxury bottle cozy that will take any gift to the next level! Featuring Red Heart Unforgettable, it's perfect for last-minute occasions! This pattern was originally published in I Like Crochet Magazine in 2014, and as one of my holiday gifts to you, I'm now sharing it for free on Moogly!

    Why Wine Cozies?

The Grapey Goodness Wine Bag is a charming and practical project that combines form and function. It's the perfect accessory for gifting a bottle of wine or bringing a touch of handmade elegance to your next gathering. A handmade wine bag turns a simple bottle of wine into a thoughtful, personal gift. It shows you didn't just stop by the store on the way - even though you might have had time to crochet it on the road!

    Grapey Goodness Wine Bag

Make it with just one skein of yarn!

Wine bags are small and portable, making them a great option for short-term projects or crafting on the go. I used Red Heart Unforgettable for this pattern, but you can use whatever worsted weight yarn you like. Solids, variegates, and self-striping will all look amazing!

This project doesn’t require much yarn, so it’s an excellent way to use up leftovers from previous projects while creating something practical. Add extra flair with embellishments like a crochet grape cluster applique, a decorative button, tassel, or switch out the crocheted ribbon for a lovely cloth one around the neck!

Crochet for the Kitchen - Yours and Theirs!

The Autumn Blooms Kitchen Towel and Dishcloth Set is a lovely pattern set featuring a matching crochet dishcloth and towel, inspired by pots of fall chrysanthemums! These are perfect for adding a touch of seasonal charm to your kitchen - the colors set the season! Easily tweak colors to match your kitchen or gift recipient’s style.

Autumn Blooms Kitchen Towel and Dishcloth Set on Moogly

These patterns are beginner to intermediate-friendly. While the floral elements might seem intricate, they are easier than you think, made with simple cluster stitches. Making your own kitchen items is also a more sustainable choice.

The Perfect Project Bernat Handicrafter - or Lily Sugar'n Cream!

Cotton yarn is typically recommended for kitchen patterns due to its durability, absorbency, and heat resistance. Plus, cotton holds its shape and can withstand frequent washing! I originally made these in Bernat Handicrafter, and it's still a great choice. But if you have a stash of Lily Sugar'n Cream or prefer that color palette, it's an easy swap - just keep an eye on the yardage!

Autumn Blooms Kitchen Towel and Dishcloth Set on Moogly

This set is great for stash-busting or crafting on a time crunch! Customizable and practical, they are something nearly everyone can use. There's a sense of joy in creating something practical, like a dishcloth, that’s also a little work of art. Plus, they often serve as great conversation starters when friends or family see them! (And in my experience, they often ask for a set of their own!)

Red Heel Sock Monkey: Book Review and Free Pattern Collection

December 23, 2024 by Tamara Kelly 1 Comment

Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons by Dee Linder

Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons by Dee Lindner is a story of love, obsession, and crafting! Dee Lindner, aka the Sock Monkey Lady®, has put together what might be the book on these "ever-sew-fascinating" stuffies and pop culture icons. Take a peek inside, get your own copy, and crochet or knit a sock monkey with the 10 free patterns below!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

Inside Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons

I've featured crochet sock monkeys here on Moogly before. But I had no idea that I grew up not too far from where the sock monkey story begins, in Rockford Illinois! So when Dee reached out to ask if I would share the word about her book here on Moogly, I (of course) said yes!

Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons by Dee Linder

"Dee Lindner, the Sock Monkey Lady, is an author, photographer, and artist whose medium is our iconic red heel sock monkeys. She brings life to an American-born craft for all to enjoy in her sock monkey-themed books, greeting cards, and other novelties spanning over thirty-five years. Her books and cards have been popular sell outs. A red heel sock monkey expert, Lindner asserts America is the origin of one of the biggest yarns in the world ever told. This incredible story unfolds in her latest non-fiction book, Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons. A yarn yet-unfolding that contains incredible facts, colossal Wall of Fame endeavors, fun photos and heartfelt stories--of international proportions--behind the journey of our iconic sock monkeys."

Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons by Dee Linder

Dee is clearly an expert in her field. And this book shows that there is so much more to the sock monkey story than most would imagine. Inside Red Heel Sock Monkeys you'll find a deep dive into the origin of the socks, the monkeys, and every variation since.

Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons by Dee Linder

A mix of history, instructions, memories, and memorabilia, she has truly succeeded in her mission to "preserve and share sock monkey lore." There are pages and pages of photos from the past 100+ years. At nearly 400 pages, it's hard to imagine there's more to say on the subject. But if there is, I'm pretty sure Dee will take note and say it!

Red Heel Sock Monkeys: Pop Culture Icons by Dee Linder

If you are interested in the whys and wheres, and all things sock monkey, then this is the book for you. But it also has some interesting knitting history - like the invention of the seamless sock knitting machine and the rise of the matching knitting industry! There's everything from ice sculptures to lawsuits, and so many smiles throughout!

    Why Crochet Octopus Ornaments?

Okay, so this one doesn't really have a holiday connection. But this is Moogly! So I had to add a little octopus to the collection.

Crochet Octopus Ornament Free Pattern on Moogly

That said, I did do a little digging on the meaning or symbolism behind octopuses. And I found a lot of reasons to give a crochet Octopus ornament to someone special!

    • The octopus is often associated with intelligence, adaptability, intuition, and creativity.
    • Since they often can blend in or camouflage themselves, they can symbolize the importance of being adaptable and flexible.
    • Octopuses can regenerate lost limbs, so they can convey a message of resilience and healing, or bouncing back from adversity.

I knew there was a reason I loved these creatures! Do you know someone who could use a little celebrating or encouragement?

The Perfect Project for Bernat Maker Minis!

The Crochet Octopus Ornament uses only 20 yards of yarn! (Actually, a little less - I prefer to overestimate a bit.) So you can use it as a fantastic stash buster - and it's fun to see how it looks in different yarns!
