A Bit About the Author

Knit Wild is Anna-Sofia Vintersol's first book with Stackpole, and it debuted in September of 2024.

"Anna-Sofia Vintersol learned to knit in 2018, when she fell in love with traditional Icelandic sweaters. She discovered how warm they are, and how well they performed, especially when hiking, skiing, or dog sledding. Not knowing anyone who could make her a sweater, she took it into her own hands to learn how to knit. Shortly after, she started making her own designs and created her Instagram account, @loparefur, to share her designs with the world. The meaning behind Loparefur is wool (Lopi) fox (refur). It is inspired by Lopi and her Shiba dogs, who are often mistaken for foxes.

Since then, she has published her first book, Adventure Knitting, and several Icelandic-inspired patterns for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, or just loves Icelandic wool, as much as she does. Anna-Sofia has a passion for stranded colorwork; her designs are inspired by the nature that surrounds her, her dogs, many other animals, and ancient cultures. After living for many years in Norway, she recently moved to the Pacific Northwest to live with her husband, an Anishinaabe Native, and enjoys learning about the culture and traditions he grew up with."

Inside Knit Wild

Knit Wild is a beautiful hardcover and a hefty 240 pages. Sizes in the book range from 2XS to 4XL - that's 9 sizes per pattern!

The designs in Knit Wild are "meant to cater to the demands of high-altitude expeditions in the snow-clad mountains." So Anna-Sofia recommends some pretty heavy duty wools - Icelandic, Peruvian, North American, Merina, and Norwegian specifically. 

Of course, wool doesn't work for everyone - so she recommends substituting Alpaca, Cotton, or Acrylic! Sweaters are one of the projects where you really do want to take the time to get gauge. This is true even when you use the exact yarn called for.

Chart Reading Required

There is some guidance on colorwork, sizing, and blocking. But the vast majority of this book is devoted to the 21 knit sweater patterns. However, the written instructions only take 2-4 pages.

In order to make the patterns in this book, you need to be able to read knit color charts! Each pattern in Knit Wild includes gorgeous, full-color photos of the sweaters in a variety of yarns, color combos, and sizes. 

Each of the sweaters in Knit Wild are unisex, and there are a variety of styles, from crew neck to hoodie. The animal motifs are utterly delightful - I love them all! The Kitulo in particular is a jaw-dropper perfect for experienced knitters. This book is amazing, and makes me want to dive into colorwork knitting!
