Taking a Peek Inside Colorful Baby Crochet

There are 35 patterns in Colorful Baby Crochet, so they are broken up into three sections: Clothes and Accessories includes 14 patterns, Nursery & Blankets has 11 patterns, and Toys features 10 designs.

Colorful Baby Crochet Giveaway on Moogly

This book jumps right into the patterns, with minimal fuss up front. There is a size chart to note though if you plan to make any of the clothing patterns - some go all the way up to 36 months! Like I said above, you can use this book hundreds of times to crochet for the babies in your life - and the toddlers!

Colorful Baby Crochet Giveaway on Moogly

Each of the patterns includes the materials list, size, and written instructions. There are lots of great closeup photos to help, and stitch counts are included - always a relief to see! The written instructions follow the standard crochet pattern writing format in US terms, which makes them easy to read and follow.

Colorful Baby Crochet Giveaway on Moogly

Overall, I think Colorful Baby Crochet is a fantastic selection for anyone who crochets for babies and tots. Births, birthdays, holidays, special occasions, and just for fun - there are projects for every gift-giving level. The Unisex Romper, Heart Mobile, and Amigurumi Teddy Bear are some of my favorites... But it was so hard to choose!

    Verdant Spring Square

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 4 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors!

    The Details

My Notes: The Verdant Spring Square is a stunning square for our penultimate project! This design is beautiful, inventive, and it takes time. This one is not to be rushed! It took me several evenings and a couple of afternoons to get this one done - one just for weaving in ends. The pattern is well written, and the stitches are so unique, but this square came to impress! Be sure to read all the notes and stitch descriptions thoroughly, and I recommend using a sharp hook.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Join with SC, Crocheting in the 3rd Loop, Post Stitches, Picot Single Crochet, Puff Stitches, BLO Back Loop Only, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written after Rnd 18. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

What I Did: I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnd 1: Pewter
    Rnds 2 and 3:
    White
    Rnd 4:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 5:
Continue with Light Gray, adding Pewter as D
    Rnd 6:

    Rnd 12:

This square required moderate blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

A Year of Crochet Stitches Review

    A Bit About the Author

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

"Jill Wright is a digital copywriting specialist and crochet and knitwear designer raising her family in the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Life is writing, planning, strategizing, and teaching Jazzercise classes, with lots of driving intermingled. There’s also a sprinkling of singing both with a local chorale and in church. Busy? Yes! But she wouldn’t have it any other way."

You can see many of Jill's crochet designs on Ravelry.com, and she co-authored Curvy Crochet with Marly Bird!

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

What You'll Find Inside the Crochet Perpetual Calendar

A Year of Crochet Stitches is a perpetual flip calendar - which means that while there is a page for January 1, January 2, January 3... on through the rest of the year, there is no day of the week or year listed. So when you get to December 31st, you can just flip it around and start over again!

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

Almost every stitch fits on one side of the paper and includes a great color photo of the stitch pattern, the stitch multiple, and the written instructions. Succinct, but includes everything you need! While calendars are normally split into months, this one uses each month to tackle a specific type of stitch pattern. In the crochet version you'll find: Simple Stitches; Bobbles and Puffs; Shells and Clusters; Ripples and Zigzags; Columns and Stripes; Mesh, V-Stitches and Filet; More Shells and V-Stitches; Motifs; Popcorns and Picots; Post Stitches and Cables; Colorwork and Dropped Stitches; and Edgings or Borders.

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

However, they have not wasted the other side of the paper. Paging through, the last page would seem to be for July 11 - but then you turn it around and there's the rest of the year, on the backs of the pages! Of course, having the "flip"  in July means there are still more pages left - and they used those too!

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

Not just stitch patterns, A Year of Crochet Stitches includes gauge swatching instructions and pattern "recipes." Written for shawls and cowls, these encourage you to take your favorite stitch patterns for the year and put them into fab original accessories! Info on joining motifs lets you turn all your swatches into blankets, sweaters, and more. Finally, there's a section on choosing the perfect yarn and a list of standard abbreviations.

"Tabetha Hedrick is a knitwear designer and writer raising a family just outside the Great Smoky Mountains in Eastern Tennessee. As the Design Director for SweetGeorgia Yarns, her days (and heart) are filled to the brim with knitting, art, writing, editing, planning, and finding ways to put it all together. What You'll Find Inside the Knitting Perpetual Calendar

Just like A Year of Crochet Stitches, A Year of Knitting Stitches is a perpetual calendar, with no days of the week or years - so you can use it for years to come!

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

This calendar is set up just like the crochet one as well, with each page featuring a detailed color photo of the stitch pattern, the stitch multiple, and the written instructions. It's basically the same format, just with a few differences. In A Year of Knitting Stitches, the months aren't divided by stitch type, but I spot tons of texture, cables, lace, mosaics, stripes, fair isle, and more!

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

One extra thing you'd find in A Year of Knitting Stitches is a link on January 1 to charts for all the stitch patterns! After the year is over, there are many of the same great sections found in the Crochet version.

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

Gauge swatching instructions, as well as shawl and cowl recipes, are included. Then at the very end, you'll find pages on choosing the perfect yarn and a list of standard abbreviations.

Crochet and Knit Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar Giveaway on Moogly

Get your own copies of A Year of Crochet Stitches and A Year of Knitting Stitches today!

One more thing I really want to highlight is the great quality of these calendars. The paper is not cardstock, but not wimpy either. The spiral at the top is really strong, sturdy, and big. And the stand that holds it all upright is pretty darn heavy-duty as well. It won't survive a swim, but it should make it through several years on your craft table!

    Side view of the calendars

These calendars make the perfect gift for yourself or a friend (or two) who loves to crochet or knit! The handy size is perfect on the desk or on the go, fitting easily in a project bag. These calendars are inspiration at your fingertips whenever you need it. And it never expires - you can use this perpetual calendar year after year! You can get a peek at a live unboxing of both here!

Grab your favorite shades of Bernat Plush Big

One of the rules for the Giftstravaganza Blog Hop is that we could only use 3 skeins of yarn or less - and this one fits the bill! One skein of Bernat Plush Big makes the hat, another makes the body, and a little bit of a third makes the beard.  Which colors you pick are up to you (though I do recommend white or off-white for the beard)!

Simple Crochet Gnome Basket - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Of course, you can make this pattern with any yarn - like Bernat Plush! You'll get the same look with this yarn, but a much smaller finished project. You can get an idea of the size differences by looking at the Plush Pumpkin Basket! If you switch out the yarns, be sure to use a hook that is a size or two smaller than what's recommended on the label, for a nice firm fabric.

Fill It With Goodies... or Hide the Mess!

One of the things I'm excited about for this project is the way I worked Rnd 4 of the Base. This has created the most stable crochet-only basket base I've ever made, and I see myself using this technique a lot in the future. The edge is nice and "sharp" and the stability is unmatched - I can't wait to hear what you think! It should stand up to whatever you stuff in it!

Simple Crochet Gnome Basket - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Simple Crochet Gnome Basket is a generous size, perfect for gifting as is, or filling with special treats. Or if you're like me, you'll put all those odds and ends in it that tend to clutter up the table. Make a whole crew to keep your counters clean for you this season! If only they did the actual holiday cleaning...

    Favorite Flower Square

    by The Purple Poncho

MooglyCAL2023 - Block 22 Courtesy of The Purple Poncho

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 6 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors!

    The Details

My Notes: As we head toward the end of the year, we're keeping the skill level high! The Favorite Flower Square is a riot of color and stitches, with lots of fun techniques to try. Carolyn's instructions are great. But be sure to once again take your time with this one, and be sure to read the instructions thoroughly.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: CSDC, Join with SC, Crocheting in the 3rd Loop, Post Stitches, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Half Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Linen Stitch, Treble Crochet, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" as written.

    Rnds 1 and 2: White
    Rnd 3:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 4:
    Pewter
    Rnds 5 and 6:
    White
    Rnd 7:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 8:
    Pewter
    Rnd 9:
    White
    Rnd 10:
    Pewter
    Rnd 11:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 12:
    White
    Rnd 13:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 14:
    Pewter
    Rnd 15:
    White
    Rnd 16:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 17:
    Pewter
    Rnd 18:
    White

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Haunted Hats, It's a babé Crochet Hat Templates Giveaway!

October 24, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 52 Comments

babé crochet hat templates giveaway on Moogly

Don't let hat making frighten you! With babé Crochet Hat Templates, you can make them in any size, and be sure that they will fit! Check out this amazing tool for all hat makers (both crochet and knit!), and enter to win a set here on Moogly - we're giving away THREE full sets!

Disclaimer: This giveaway is sponsored by babé Crochet. All opinions are my own.

What are babé crochet Hat Templates?!

They're templates that tell you how big to make your hats to fit every size - no math or tape measures needed! Here's a video from babé Crochet on TikTok with more info on how they work:

    @babecrochetco How to use the Izzy Crochet Hat Tool Now out ! See bio for shop 🔗 Was £27 but now £21.95 (from UK). Was $45 but now $39.99 (from US retailer) #crochethattool #crochethat #fyp #hatmaking #hattemplate #crochethat #crochethat #crochettool #crochethatpattern #crochethattemplate #crochethattool #babyhattemplate #crochetbabyhat ♬ original sound - babecrochetco

These are genuinely SO easy to use! Working top down, you match the size of your flat circle to the top of the curve. Then, work even until it's the length of the template. No more consulting endless charts or trying it on over and over again - or worse yet, just hoping! Instead, you can grab the template for the size of the hat you're making and toss it in your project bag. If you crochet for a big family - or craft fairs - you can put together a set of templates with your most needed sizes to whip them up faster than ever!

    Babe Crochet Hat Templates

By Once, Use It for Life

I've been using them for years - ever since I first learned about them! And I can tell that the set I have will last my entire crochet career, and keep getting used. These hat templates are made from strong plastic, and embossed with the template number. With each set, you'll receive a chart with all the sizing info, a wire ring to keep the templates and chart organized, and a  tutorial on how to use the templates.

Each full set includes baby to adult head sizes from Newborn all the way up to Adult XL (Head circumferences of 34.95cm up to 61.6cm -- 13 ¾" up to 24 ¼’) - the perfect set!

    Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack

Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack is perfect for kids, tweens, teens, and the young at heart! And of course, it's also a free crochet pattern on Moogly! Featuring Red Heart Super Saver, it'll stand up to every delicious adventure!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

Purchase the downloadable PDF of this pattern on Ravelry

Create a Tasty Treat to Tote your Goodies

You can use the Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack to tote all sorts of goodies - even Halloween candy if it's the season! Perfect for preschoolers on up, this pattern features post stitches as well as lots of back loop and third loop texture. The back is made with rows of linked treble crochet stitches, for a solid yet lightweight fabric that works up quickly!

Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Grab your favorite green shade of Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo Speckle

While I used solid shades of Red Heart Super Saver solids for the cup and cherry, the "icing" of our treat bag is made with new Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo Speckle! This yarn features a new dye effect that offers a unique hand-dyed look - and is perfect for "cupcake sprinkles!" It comes in 6 different colors, so you can customize your cupcake for someone special.

Fun to Wear for Kids and Adults

This is a drawstring-style backpack, and as such has, well... long strings! As such, it should not be used by children aged 3 and under. Remember, crochet designs are not "tested for safety." If you have a smaller child who wants their own cupcake bag, I'd recommend the free Cupcake Toddler Purse crochet pattern - you can use Red Heart Super Saver for both and make a matching set for siblings!

    Assembly

With Color A and WS of Front and Back held together, use stitch markers to attach pieces. Starting on one side, at the top of the bag, sc through both layers, working along the side, bottom, and other side. Add an extra sc at each bottom corner, and place a stitch marker in this corner st. Be sure to leave the top open. Do not break yarn.

Sprinkle Cupcake crochet Front and Back together

WORK AROUND THE TOP OF THE BAG AS FOLLOWS:

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around the top (Front and then Back Side); join to the first sc of this round. (73 sts)

Round 2: CSDC in first st, ch 1,   *dc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st; rep around, break yarn and seamless join to the 3rd ch. (37 dc, 37 ch)

Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack - top of bag

    ADD THE BOTTOM ROW:

With the Front side facing you, rejoin Color A to the bottom marked corner of the bag with sc, ch 2, sc in the next st, sc in each st across the bottom of the bag until 1 st remains; ch 2, sc in the last marked st of the bottom. Break yarn and weave in ends. (There are now "holes" in each bottom corner of the bag.)

    ADD THE CHERRY ON TOP:

Using the long tail left on the Cherry, sew the center of the cherry to the center top of the Front of the Backpack, on the last Color B row. Only take a few stitches across the center, leaving the majority of the Cherry unattached.

Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack - add cherry

    ADD DRAWSTRINGS/STRAPS:

Weave each cord through the ch 1 sps of Round 2 of the top as shown below, so that both ends of each cord come out on the same side, with one cord having both ends on the right, and the other having both ends on the left.

Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack - add drawstrings

Thread both ends of each cord through the bottom corner hole on the same side of the bag, going front to back (in on the Front/Post St side, out on the Back/Ltr side). Tie them in a knot so they won't come back through the hole, and if using nylon/plastic cord use a lighter or match to melt the ends together (adults only please!) if desired, or let them fray below the knot. If using crochet or knitted icord, you may need to make two knots, or sew them in. Pull the drawstrings a bit so the top closes to wear.

Sprinkle Cupcake Backpack - tie knot to finish

13 Tips for Working with Textured Yarns

October 18, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 2 Comments

13 Tips for Working with Textured Yarns - Moogly

Textured yarns can add texture and dimension to your crochet and knit projects. But they can be a little tricky to work with. How are you supposed to stitch when you can't see the stitches?! So here are 13 tips for working with textured yarns!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

First, Grab Your Textured Yarns Here:

How to Work With Textured Yarns

My 13 Tips for Crocheting With Textured Yarns

Here's a summary of the tips we went over in the video!

    1. Set the Scene: Have bright light and a light-colored background to maximize what you can see.
    2. Choose the Right Pattern: Be sure to pick a pattern that will be complemented by the yarn - seems easy, but it trips us all up sometimes!
    3. Consider Gauge: If gauge matters, then be sure to make a gauge swatch - counting stitches is easier when you know exactly how many you've made.
    4. Use Simple Stitches: Complex patterns like cables will just get lost in most textured yarns.
    5. Pick Impactful Special Stitches: If you do want stitches like bobbles or popcorns to show up with textured yarn, be sure to go big and bold with them!
    6. Choose the Right Hook Size: Bumping up will help you see your stitches!
    7. Use Your Hands: Feel out your stitches, and you'll be able to "sense" where it put your hook.
    8. Frog with Care: You can still undo your stitches with 99% of textured yarns, but you may have to take your time pulling out each stitch one at a time.
    9. Blocking Still Matters: Even if you can't see the individual stitches, blocking can help shape up your finished item.
    10. Practice Patience: Working with textured yarns is usually a bit slower than working with smooth yarns, so be sure to take your time and enjoy the process.
    11. Plan Your Seams: If you need to seam two textured pieces, be sure to use clips or stitch markers to plan out your seam before you start sewing.
    12. Add Another Yarn: Holding a smooth yarn along with the textured yarn can help you see your stitches and make it a bit easier.
    13. If You Can't See It, Neither Can They! Don't sweat the small stuff no one can see! 😉

And here's a Pin for your Crochet Pinterest Board! Make sure you are following Moogly on Pinterest for all the best knit, crochet, and craft pins!

Here's a bit about Edie in her own words:

Julie Yeager Designer Showcase on Moogly

I'm Julie Yeager and I have been crocheting and knitting since childhood. I'm currently obsessed with crocheted afghan squares and blanket designs - always a new idea on the hook. I like to make my patterns easy to read and fun to stitch. I’ve been self-publishing my patterns on Ravelry and Etsy since 2010 and with my yearly Mystery'Ghan I reach new fans every year. MooglyCAL2023 - Block 21 by Mamas2Hands

    The Details

My Notes: You may have noticed that this is Andee's second square for 2023. And I need to give her a BIG thank you for stepping in when another designer had to drop out of the CAL last minute - thank you Andee! The Pinwheel Square is a study in spirals, which is one of Andee's specialties! Spirals can be tricky, so be sure to *follow her instructions to use stitch markers*! This is so so important to help you keep track. Be sure, as always, to read all the notes before you begin. Take your time with this one, and be sure to read the instructions thoroughly.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: CSDC, Join with SC, Loosely Slip Stitch, Crossed (X) Stitches, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square got to 12" after Rnd 4 of the Border, so I stopped there, skipping the last round.

Make 2 squares: Pewter, White, Pewter, Light Gray
    Make 2 squares:
Light Gray, White, Light Gray, Pewter
    Border Rnds 1 - 3: Pewter
    Border Rnd 4:
    White
    Border Rnd 5:
    skipped for size

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

    A Bit About the Author

Sarah Zimmerman of Repeat Crafter Me Author Sarah Zimmerman is the creator of Repeat Crafter Me, and an absolute delight if you ever get the chance to meet her! She's not only one of the fastest crocheters I've seen, but she consistently creates the cutest designs. Here's her official author blurb:

"Sarah is the crocheter, crafter, blogger, wife, and busy mom of three behind the blog Repeat Crafter Me. As an avid crafter and a self-taught crocheter, she took her hobby and passion for the two and created www.RepeatCrafterMe.com as an outlet to share her craft tutorials and free crochet patterns. A graphic designer by trade with an eye for color, Sarah’s crochet patterns have gained lots of praise for their fresh, cute designs that are trendy, seasonal, and adaptive. You will find many animal and character hats for babies and kids as well as new and unique designs that appeal to all ages. She offers simple patterns with easy to follow tutorials and detailed step-by-step photos."

Taking a Peek Inside Crochet Cute Forest Friends

With 26 patterns all in one book, you need a bit of organization! So Crochet Cute Forest Friends is broken into 5 sections: Forest Floor Friends, Treetop Dwellers, Riverside Animals and Insects, Nocturnal Critters, and then there's a bonus - a Treehouse Scene!

Crochet Cute Forest Friends Review and Giveaway on Moogly

Each animal is created using basic stitches and shapes, and sewing is minimized in these patterns. There's a great intro section with tips on everything from hooks to yarn to safety eyes, followed by a visual crochet stitch dictionary. The pages on Finishing Techniques are particularly great and full of important info!

Crochet Cute Forest Friends Review and Giveaway on Moogly

Each of the patterns includes the materials list, size, and written instructions. There are lots of great closeup photos to help, and stitch counts are included - love that! The written instructions follow the standard crochet pattern writing format, which makes them easy to read - and means you can start here and take your crochet skills on to any project!

    Frog Squish

October 5, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 6 Comments

Frog Squish - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Frog Squish is a big round green amigurumi frog - a very squishy, and not at all slimy, free crochet pattern on Moogly! Featuring Bernat Blanket, this pattern will hop right off your hook and into your heart.

Ribbit, ribbit... well, hopefully not too much!

While I did a lot of "frogging" while making this squish, it was all in an effort to make sure this pattern is perfect for you! The body and belly of the Frog Squish are like most of the other squishes. But we've added great big eyes and new feet to create this toady pal!

Grab your favorite green shade of Bernat Blanket!

There are a bunch of lovely greens to choose from in Bernat Blanket - I had to poll the family to decide on which to use myself. Frogs come in lots of shades, so there's no wrong answer. In fact, switch out the green for a yellow or earthy brown, and your frog will become a toad - a few buttons on the back will add the perfect spots!

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This crochet frog pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes, but this pattern has not been tested for safety for children under 3 years of age. If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the eyes and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely. If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

Red Heart Into the Woods Mobius

October 3, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 5 Comments

Red Heart Into the Woods Mobius - Moogly

The Red Heart Into the Woods Mobius is a center-out oversized cowl featuring Super Saver Brushed in three gorgeous colors! I designed this pattern for Yarnspirations.com, and it's a fun exploration of textured stitches. Here's how to use Red Heart Super Saver Brushed to make the Into the Woods Mobius - in both right and left-handed video tutorials! Follow along with the free written crochet pattern download - get all the links below!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Yarnspirations.

Red Heart Into the Woods Mobius

I really enjoyed using Red Heart Super Saver Brushed to make this pattern. And I love the write-up about it they did: "Worked in a Mobius loop, this pattern will have you practicing front and back posts, decreases, and foundation double crochets. This project is made in the delightfully fuzzy texture of Red Heart Super Saver Brushed, a soft and heathery yarn that you won't want to put down. Wear it around your shoulders or as a hood on especially chilly days - this versatile accessory can be styled in multiple ways to keep you warm."

Red Heart Into the Woods Mobius - Moogly

I also love that there's a crochet chart to go with the written instructions! This pattern has a few unusual moves, so when in doubt, check the chart to clarify stitch placement!

    The Details

My Notes: The Mosaic Tile Block is a fun square, and one you'll be proud of making! It is, however, a challenge. Luckily, I've been told there will be a video tutorial to go with the pattern! There is also a chart, which is super helpful - use one to clarify confusion on the other! Be sure, as always, to read all the notes before you begin. Take your time with this one, and I recommend using a sharp, pointy hook while crocheting this one.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: CSDC, Tr - Treble Crochet, Post Stitches, Working in the Third Loop, Join with HDC, Join with SC, CSTR, Loosely Slip Stitch, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square came out to size as written.

    Color A: Light Gray
    Color B:
    Peweter
    Color C:
    White

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Plush Pumpkin Basket - free crochet pattern on Moogly

Go Plush... or Go Plush BIG!

I love a big basket, but I also love a little basket - and these Bernat yarns make it easy to crochet my pumpkin and have it too! These yarns are identical except for the gauge, or diameter, of the yarn strand itself. And they both come in a delightful assortment of autumnal colors. You'll see in some of the pictures that I actually started the Plush Big version of this pattern in the Gold color, with Caramel for the stem. But wasn't in love with this color combo, so I ran out to my local Michaels to pick up some Frosted Leaf, and ended up making the rest in Caramel!

The Plush Pumpkin Basket looks great on your table or sideboard, wherever a little fall festivity is needed. Stash whatever you like inside - candy, keys, bills, evidence... even leftover bits of yarn! You can make either size of these baskets, with lid, in less than 2 hours - so you can make them in every color, for every room.

Circulo InLove Yarn Giveaway on Moogly

One of the wonderful new yarns I've gotten to try this year is Circulo InLove! And after making the Woven Wheat Tote with this dreamy yarn, I totally get why they named it that. Well, I had two hanks left over and decided it would be fun to share it with all of you! Take a closer look at Circulo InLove, and enter to win two hanks here on Moogly!

Circulo InLove Yarn Giveaway on Moogly

    All About Circulo InLove

Circulo InLove is a 5-chunky 100%  Brazilian cotton yarn. Each hank measures 137 yards (125 meters), weighing 3.52 ounces (100 grams). The recommended crochet hook size is 6 mm (J-10), and the recommended knitting needle size is 6 mm (US 10). This yarn is great for accessories and household items, but would also make lovely garments as it's just so smooth and great to touch!

Woven Wheat Tote - WIP with Hook

And below you can see the Woven Wheat Tote! I hadn't worked with this yarn before designing this bag for Stitch Up Chicago, but I really enjoyed using it! It feels wonderful to the hand, is not splitty at all, and while you can see the texture of the yarn itself, the lack of halo means you can also see your stitches clearly. I designed this bag in two sizes - and two hanks are enough to make the small size!

    Checkered Granny Crochet Blanket Square

    by Blankets With Heart

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 3 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors!

MooglyCAL2023 Block 19 - courtesy of Blankets With Heart

    The Details

My Notes: The Checkered Granny Crochet Blanket Square is a fun square with lots of color patterning possibilities. I chose to carry the yarns along the back, so I only had 6 ends to weave in. However, you can see this a bit on the back, so if you want the back of the square to be "perfect" you'll need to break the yarn between colors. Lindsey has included some helpful notes throughout the pattern, so be sure to read everything as you go!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, CSDC, Tr - Treble Crochet, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square was just a tiny bit small, so I worked Rnd 11 with hdc instead of sc, and that was perfect.

    Rnds 1 and 2: White
    Rnd 3:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 4:
    Pewter
    Rnd 5: White
    Rnd 6:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 7:
    Pewter
    Rnd
     8: White
    Rnd 9: Light Gray
    Rnd 10:
    Pewter
    Rnd
    11: White

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Grab the deepest, darkest Bernat Blanket!

I don't often crochet with black yarn, but Bernat Blanket makes it so much easier! The big fluffy stitches and a nice bright light will see you through. I'm so glad I decided to use this yarn when I started the Squish series! It turns these oversize amigurumi into easy, quick projects - I made this one in under 10 hours. The microbead pillow ball inside is my favorite stuffing, but feel free to use fiber fill, scrap yarn, or whatever you like!

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This crochet bat pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze!

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More!

September 5, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 46 Comments

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More!

Crochet Impkins is another amazing amigurumi book by Megan Lapp! With her stitching, she takes us once again, on a fantastical journey to other worlds. Get a peek at the plethora of pattern possibilities here on Moogly! And then, enter to win your own copy - plus a copy of her previous book, Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Crochet Impkins Review

    A Bit About the Author

Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend Review and Giveaway on MooglyAuthor Megan Lapp runs the Etsy shop Crafty Intentions, and it's full of amazing, legendary designs, just like the ones seen in her books. Here's how she describes her shop:

"Fantasy creatures, beautiful animals, clearly written and formatted patterns, step by step photo tutorials, for handmade magic! Detailed glossaries, materials lists, and extremely clear instructions to ensure your success in creating these epic crocheted creations!"

Her shop is full of delights - and sure to make your dreams soar! There are dozens of wonderful creatures, but there are also a couple of shawls that are the kind of costume pieces you wish you could wear every day and live your own magical fairy tale!

    What are Crochet Impkins?

I think I better let Megan explain this one:

"I’m sure you have seen them out of the corner of your eye from time to time, racing from hiding place to nook or cranny—odd little creatures of stitch and stuffing, of endless variety in form and manner. In these pages, you will not find a taxonomy of their features or a list of the names by which you might call them, you will find guidance on something far more important—the techniques and methods by which you might craft one of these little stitchlings of your very own.

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly

It is a wonderful thing, I assure you, to bring an Impkin to life with hook and yarn, and herein you will find the detailed instructions necessary to craft one, with an endless array of options for ears, antennae, hats, wings, tails, scales, horns, hairstyles, clothing, and accessories. Each Impkin is unique, and only you can listen to find out what yours longs to be. Stitch by stitch, you’ll cast a spell, until at last you have made a brand-new creature. Don’t be surprised if it asks for a snazzy vest or a satchel to hold its treasures!

Though hard to spot at first, when you see one Impkin you can be sure there are more around. Impkins are social little creatures; once you make one, it is sure to clamor for a multitude of friends from your hook!"

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly

And they're adorable! Paging through Crochet Impkins feels like a buffet of amazing choices - luckily, we know where to get started!

Creating Millions of Unique Crochet Impkins

While Crochet Impkins might not teach you how to crochet, it will teach you how to create your own amigurumi creature - and how to make each one unique! I mean it when I say I don't think you could run out of possibilities here. Fortunately, Megan takes us through the steps quickly and easily, with a quick intro and a fabulous planning sheet. (Break out the scanner, you'll want to make copies!)

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly

Using this sheet, you can start paging through and making your choices. There are 4 basic body styles to choose from: two sitting, and two standing. Pick one of two arm styles, and one of the four belly options, and you're in business!

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly

After that, we start at the top  - there are 4 antenna styles, 11 ears options, 6 face styles, 21 different hats and hairstyles, 6 types of horns and antlers... You get the idea! Scales, tails, wings, outfits, and accessories all add to the fun. Like a deck of cards, you can mix and match these forever and never make the same amigurumi twice! Add in all the color options, safety eyes, and yarn weights, and wow!

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly

Of course, Crochet Impkins is chock full of super cute examples of these combos - and each picture includes a circle with the details you need to make one just like it. There are so many "stitchlings" here to get you started!

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly

All the projects pictured are made with worsted weight yarn and a US-G, 4mm crochet book. Megan has a few suggestions, including Red Heart Super Saver. But I think these designs would be just as amazing in a thread - or jumbo yarn! If you or someone you love is into fantasy creatures, both Crochet Impkins and Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend are must-haves for your crochet bookshelf!

Crochet Impkins Review and Giveaway - and More! on Moogly
