This year I wanted to design a free 12″ afghan square that was solid, pretty, and fun to make – and the result is the Joyful Afghan Square!

A Joyful Afghan Square for the CAL – or any reason!
This pattern was designed with the 2016 Moogly Afghan Crochet Along in mind – but you don’t have to participate in the CAL to make this pattern! It would be beautiful repeated in a blanket all it’s own, you could sew 2 together and add a strap for a shoulder bag, or you could even use it as a start for something altogether new – go wherever your imagination takes you!

Tamara, this is just lovely! I can’t wait to do it and will likely bump the alternate I’m working on, to do this one ASAP!!!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you! 😀 I’m so glad you like it!

This is a lovely square. Do you have any tips on making this into a baby blanket? Is there a way to continue the pattern before making it into a square shape? I don’t wish to make multiple squares that have to be seen together, as I want to make two blankets for my newborn twins before the cold weather comes back 🙂
Thank you for all of the awesome designs and reviews that you offer on your website! You have a fan for life.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much! I may indeed turn it into a baby blanket, but I haven’t written that pattern yet. Congrats on the babies!!!

I could not understand what BLO and FLO means. The square is beautiful and I would like to do a blanket with this squares for my daughter. Please translate BLO and FLO. I could not find any video to explain.
Thank you,

Tamara Kelly
Hi Lidia! It’s Back Loop Only and Front Loop Only – the tutorial is linked above right below the yarn and gauge info! 🙂

Been hunting for my next project…THIS IS IT!! How many skeins of each color did you use?
Tamara Kelly
Less than a skein of each!
