    The Details

My Notes: The Clematis Garden Square is a quick one, working up in an evening or two. Andee's design takes you through a wide variety of stitches, creating an appealing and lightweight design. A few of the rounds take some concentration - using a bookmark, sticky note, or pencil to help you keep your place in the paragraph will be a big help! Don't be afraid to put the color changes in different spots - make this one your own!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle,  Join with Sc (Standing Dc), Spike Stitches, ExDc or ExtDC, CSDC, Bobbles, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square measured up to size as written. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

What I Did: I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 and 2: Pewter
    Rnds 3 and 4:
    White
    Rnd 5: Pewter
    Rnds 6 -
     8: Light Gray
    Rnd 9 - 11: White
    Rnd 12: Pewter
    Rnd 13: White

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Just finished block 18 and have a question. (I don't think I have asked this before. But I have asked about counting stitches - which I can still have issues with!) I understand being conscious of RS and WS for stitches like the bobble stitch and the loop stitch, particularly working in the round. Why do you turn and change direction for regular sc and dc? This was a fun (but frustrating) block. I had a lot of trouble counting the stitches when I kept switching from the wrong side to the right side or back. In my flat pieces, I really can't tell sides except for all the ends! I continue to learn a lot from these blocks and am truly enjoying the CAL. I just like to know the rationale behind doing something different. Thanks for your expertise and your patience.

Hi Susan! Great question! Sometimes when you work several rounds all from the same side, you can start getting a twist in your square. This is because each crochet stitch is slightly to the right of the one it's worked into (if right-handed). By turning, the square stays "square-er!" I recommend using a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each round (moving them up as you go). That's a big help for situations like this.
