A Bit About the Designer

I was lucky enough to meet Wilma a few years ago - we both had to travel to NYC for that to happen! But she was such a lovely person, and I've enjoyed seeing her designs and her amazing work with Story Shawls over the years. So I'm so excited to share her work and learn more about her in this Designer Showcase!

Here's a bit about Wilma in her own words:

I am Wilma Westenberg, a 29-year-old crochet designer from the Netherlands. My crochet journey began at the age of 22. Now, seven years later, it has evolved into more than just a hobby; it's become my full-time job and passion.

In my early weeks as a crocheter, I learned the ropes through online photo and video tutorials. Soon, I was able to create my own patterns, which I share for free on my website.

My main focus is on sweaters (sizes up to 5XL), shawls, and squares. For the past three years, I've dedicated myself to a special Tulip Square collection, comprised of projects made out of squares.

I love making videos on social media showcasing the simplicity of my patterns. People often think crocheting sweaters is complicated, but my videos demonstrate that it's actually quite easy.

I am also working on a lifelong project: designing Story Shawls inspired by people with the same rare medical condition. Only a handful of people worldwide share this diagnosis with me, and each year, I find one or two new peers through social media.

When I'm not crocheting, I'm traveling with my husband, actively seeking and visiting 'extended family' who share the same rare medical condition as me. Being a huge fan of the USA, I make it a priority to visit the USA at least once a year - and of course, as I return home, my suitcase is filled with yarn from Michael's and Joann's.
