    Exploring Tunisian Crochet Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Lori Harrison of Aklori Designs

Lori's work is new to me, but it is lovely! Here's her official author blurb:

"Lori Harrison is the Tunisian crochet designer behind Aklori Designs. She has been creating Tunisian crochet garments and accessories that (are) thoughtfully designed, size inclusive, and enjoyable to make since 2017. Come explore with her at @akloridesigns and akloridesigns.com."

Taking a Peek Inside Exploring Tunisian Crochet

From the back of the book:

"Whether you are completely new to Tunisian crochet or you already love it and are ready to move beyond the basic stitches, Exploring Tunisian Crochet has the step-by-step instructions you need to master any Tunisian crochet technique. Photo tutorials for basic stitches and advanced stitches (for both left- and right-handed crocheters) get you started on the road to success. Complete your education with expert tips and techniques.

Once you've practiced the stitches, you'll be ready to crochet any of the 20 stunning patterns for shawls, scarves, hats, and more. You'll be amazed at the versatility of Tunisian fabrics you can make with the variety of stitches in this book, from lacy shawls with beautiful drape to stretchy hats and mittens and color work shawls and scarves. The advanced crochet stitches you'll learn open a whole new world of possibilities!"

    Learn How to Tunisian Crochet

They aren't kidding about step-by-step instructions! Fully the first third of the book is all about learning Tunisian crochet. While it's helpful to have prior crochet experience (and knitting, for that matter), none is required. The photos show each moment in nice bright pictures.

Lori starts with a discussion of the tools needed, and takes us all the way from foundation rows, and hits each stitch through simple stitch to full stitch. Finally, she wraps up this section with increases, decreases, color changes, and finishing techniques.

    Try Tunisian Crochet with Patterns

The rest of the book is filled with 20 lovely patterns, divided into three difficulty levels:

Each pattern I looked at included the yarn, hook size, and gauge, as well as a schematic with measurements. Again, when it comes to pattern reading, prior crochet experience or knit experience will be helpful. While the stitches are given the standard Tunisian stitch names, it still helps to know how to parse pattern syntax and formatting. If you're new though, do not fret! There is a whole section on reading patterns starting on page 53! Be sure to bookmark page 56 for quick stitch reference as you work the patterns.

Overall, I think Exploring Tunisian Crochet is great introduction to Tunisian crochet, and a fun pattern book for those who already know the skill! Some of the stitches and techniques are more advanced, so it's also wonderful for those ready to go to the next level. The patterns are lovely and offer a challenge for anyone at any level.

I absolutely love Tunisian crocheting. It's always my go-to stitch fo blankets. But I've only ever tried the basic stitch. I'd love to explore and experiment with other Tunisian stitches.

Years ago I bought Tunisian crochet hooks not really knowing what they were and never found a way to use them. They've been stored away for years and maybe now is the time to bring them out!
