Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 4 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors!

    MooglyCAL2023 Block 18

    The Details

My Notes: The Clematis Garden Square is a quick one, working up in an evening or two. Andee's design takes you through a wide variety of stitches, creating an appealing and lightweight design. A few of the rounds take some concentration - using a bookmark, sticky note, or pencil to help you keep your place in the paragraph will be a big help! Don't be afraid to put the color changes in different spots - make this one your own!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle,  Join with Sc (Standing Dc), Spike Stitches, ExDc or ExtDC, CSDC, Bobbles, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square measured up to size as written. But everyone's gauge is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.

What I Did: I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 and 2: Pewter
    Rnds 3 and 4:
    White
    Rnd 5: Pewter
    Rnds 6 -
     8: Light Gray
    Rnd 9 - 11: White
    Rnd 12: Pewter
    Rnd 13: White

This square required mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Sunday Sweater - free crochet pattern on Moogly

    NOTES:

This pattern includes up to 8" of positive ease, based on the bust measurement. For a slimmer fit, chose one size down.

The length of this top is totally customizable - just add more repeats of the last 2 rows. Be sure to adjust the length of both the front and back to match - or go longer in the back if desired!

It is strongly recommended that you try on your top before weaving in the ends from the side seams and adding the edging so that you can see just how long the fabric hangs and adjust both the length of the top and the length of the side vents. Remember that crochet grows with gravity!

If desired, substitute a Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC) and ch 1 for the Ch 4 beginning the even-numbered rows, and a CSDC for the Ch 3 beginning the odd-numbered rows.

If desired, substitute a Standing Double Crochet (STDC) for the ch-3 whenever adding a new color or skein of yarn at the beginning of a row.

    The Details

My Notes: The Ocean Foam Square is our first MooglyCAL design from Golden Lucy Crafts, and I'm so excited to welcome her to the group! I've long admired her designs, which you can check out in her Moogly Designer Showcase. Her square is lovely, textured, and full of interest no matter what your color scheme! Round 8 is a little more tricky, but just take your time with it - it's worth it!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, CSDC in the Magic Circle, FLO and BLO, Puff Stitches, Join with Sc, Join with Hdc, Join with Dc, Crossed Stitches, and Seamless Finishing.

    Rnd 1: Light Gray
    Rnd 2: Pewter
    Rnd 3 and 4:
    White
    Rnd 5: Light Gray
    Rnd 6 and
    7: Pewter
    Rnd 8: Light Gray
    Rnd 9 and 10: White
    Rnd 11: Pewter
    Rnd 12: Light Gray
    Rnd 13: Pewter
    Rnd 14:
    White

This square required moderate blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets by Esme Crick Giveaway

August 14, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 58 Comments

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blanket Giveaway on Moogly

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets is a new book by Esme Crick, and I think it's just brilliant! Get a peek at the *thousands* of possibilities inside, and enter to win your own copy on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review, courtesy of David & Charles; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets Review

    A Bit About the Author

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets by Esme Crick Giveaway on Moogly

Esme Crick is now the author of two books - in addition to Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets, she wrote the gorgeous Mosaic Crochet Workshop! Here's a bit more about her:

"Esme Crick has spent most of her life designing, making, writing, and giving far too much attention to her various needy cats. She learned to crochet when her children were tiny, and she hasn't stopped since. She is best known for her modern crochet designs - she loves to test the boundaries of this traditional craft by mixing up different styles and techniques to create her own, unique style of crochet.

Working under the name Red Sparrow Crochet, her bold, geometric designs have appeared in many magazines, yarn publications, and of course in her previous book Mosaic Crochet Workshop. She lives in Suffolk England, with her partner, their two children, and their extremely grumpy cat, Hank Deluxe. Esme goes by the name Red Sparrow Crochet on social media. You can find her blog at redsparrowcrochet.blogspot.com and her Etsy shop at etsy.com/uk/shop/RedSparrowCrochet." Please note that while Esme lives in the UK, this book is written in US terms!

    100 patterns? 1000s of throws!?!

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets is a unique crochet pattern book. It's sort of like a crochet stitch dictionary designed specifically for afghans! The "How To Use This Book" page explains it in depth, but the basic concept is simple. The book starts off with a handful of inspiration patterns - examples of fully finished blankets made with the patterns found in the next section.

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets Giveaway on Moogly

And it's this next section where you get to play! It's filled with 100 different "Strip Patterns." These are the stitch patterns that you can mix and match for thousands and thousands of possibilities! "Each strip is worked back and forth along its short edge, so there's no tediously long starting chain..." so you can work them to whatever length you want for the width of your blanket.

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets Giveaway on Moogly

Then, you simply stitch or sew the strips together, side by side, to create the height (or width, if you like your stripes vertical)! You can use whatever seaming method you prefer - crocheting or sewing. Esme does have a recommendation, however - the whip stitch, which is the easiest method of all! The final touch is adding some sort of edging - but what that is, is up to you.

    Highly Recommended

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets includes tons of fantastic tips, tricks, and guidance to help you get the most out of this book. And I really do love the wide selection of patterns included! The patterns themselves are divided into 8 sections: Classic, Texture, Mosaic, Filet, Embellishment, Ribbing and Cables, Tapestry, and Bobbles, Puffs, and Popcorns. Each pattern includes written instructions as well as a chart - love that! There is such a phenomenal variety here, it's really quite impressive!

Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets Giveaway on Moogly

I really think this book is wonderfully clever, and such a smart way to create an afghan pattern book! With Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets you can make a lifetime of blankets, each unique. Any yarn, any weight, any color - this book will help turn you into a beautiful baby blanket, throw, or couch-sized afghan! And of course, this book can also be used to make gorgeous rugs, scarves, cowls, and even tote bags!

Two to Tango by Kathleen Fuller Giveaway

August 7, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 5 Comments

Two to Tango by Kathleen Fuller - Giveaway on Moogly

Two to Tango is the final installment (I think!) in the Maple Falls Romance Series by Kathleen Fuller! Beginning in the local yarn store, the characters have had some adventures! And there's a crochet pattern inspired by the story! Get a peek inside, and enter to win your own copy of Two to Tango in this Moogly giveaway!

Disclaimer: This giveaway was sponsored by Kathleen Fuller; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    One. More. Time!

Back in October of 2022, I told you Sold on Love was the last book in the Maple Falls Romance series - and the Harper Plant Sweater therefore would be my last of such designs, following the Anita Cowl and Riley Hat. But this series was so successful and popular, she added one more book - Two to Tango!

Two to Tango Bag by Moogly

And I was thrilled when I was once again asked to design a pattern for it, after designing for Hooked on You, Much Ado About a Latte, and Sold on Love! CLICK HERE to get the free Two to Tango Bag Pattern! I used one skein of Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK.

    Cozy Romance to Crochet By

Two to Tango by Kathleen Fuller

Two to Tango officially debuted in July of this year! I just got my copy, so I haven't had a chance to read it yet - here's the blurb book summary:

When career-driven Olivia Farnsworth and Kingston Bedford refuse to act on their obvious chemistry, the town of Maple Falls schemes to pair the two up—and dance their way to another happy ending.

Olivia Farnsworth always has a plan and knows just what she likes. She likes her job as head librarian. She likes spending time with her aunt Bea and with her close-knit group of friends. She likes attending the cinema’s monthly Vintage Movie Night. What she does not like is stepping outside her comfort zone. But when Kingston Bedford, her best friend’s older brother, runs into her at the movies, that’s exactly what she does. She takes a chance on the gorgeous pediatrician she’s known her whole life—only to crash land her way into heartache. Twice. One year later, she’s determined to avoid him forever. Aunt Bea and her Bosom Buddies, however, have other ideas. Plans that begin with ballroom dancing lessons . . . and end with one of the Bosom Buddies getting a taste of her own matchmaking medicine.

Kingston never thought he’d be utterly alone—as his mother puts it—in his thirties. But somehow, he’s let his life spiral out of control. His career has taken over, leaving no time for romance. That is, until his clinic forces him to take a two-month sabbatical. But is it too late to start over with the girl he can’t get off his mind?

Luckily, the scheming town of Maple Falls is once again ready to help make sparks fly.

The Maple Falls Romance series has been such a delight to read (as well as crochet for)! Kathleen has been compared to Debbie Macomber and Jan Karon, though I always think of them as the perfect scripts for Hallmark movies. Light, easy to read, and just plain happy, they are the perfect escape. And remember - the whole series starts off in a yarn shop!

    Does Boba Tea Have Fiber?

I don't know if the drink does, but Lily Sugar'n Cream is my fiber of choice for this pouch! It's easy to find, comes in great "tea" colors, and just stiff enough to help this pouch stand up tall. If you prefer, you could use Red Heart Super Saver or Caron One Pound. All are washable and will stand up to regular use! And if you're new to crochet, it's still not too much to chew - this pattern is definitely beginner friendly!

Boba Tea Crochet Pouch - WIP

    by The Stitchin' Mommy

Above you can see the square that she made, featuring 2 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 3 colors!

    The Details

My Notes: The Reminiscence Square is more complicated than you might think at first glance - and full of surprises! That said, Amy has written a lovely pattern that's easy to follow. It's also sure to keep your hook entertained! It's a nicely solid square, and with frequent color changes it's easy to make it your own.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Join with Hdc, Join with Dc, Post Stitches, Crossed Stitches, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: My square was just a little small so I bumped up Rnd 12 to hdc instead of sc.

    Rnd 1 - 2: Pewter
    Rnd 3 - 4:
    White
    Rnd 5: Pewter
    Rnd 6:
    White
    Rnd 7:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 8: White
    Rnd 9: Pewter
    Rnd 10:
    White
    Rnd 11:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 12:
    White

This square required moderate blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

    Caron Colorama Halo Giveaway

July 31, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 106 Comments

Caron Colorama Halo Giveaway on Moogly

I fell in love with Caron Colorama Halo when it first debuted in the O'Go format. Now, Yarnspirations is re-introducing this unique color-changing yarn in cakes! And they're highlighting one of its most intriguing qualities - Perfect Phasing. Take another look at this gorgeous bulky-weight yarn, and enter to win 3 cakes of Caron Colorama Halo on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by Yarnspirations and may include affiliate links; all opinions are my own.

Caron Colorama Halo side view 2

"Caron® Colorama Halo™ is a bulky weight acrylic striping yarn that creates approachable fashion for any skill level with a soft and luxuriously textured yarn, now with Perfect Phasing a seamless color transition, you will love stitching up cozy shawls, sweaters, and accessories worry-free as the texture can help disguise any stitching mistakes. "

Gradients and Ombres - All With Perfect Phasing

Yarnspirations has brought back many of the beautiful colors of this yarn from before, and added some gorgeous and exciting new ones! I love the ombres they had before - as well as the new ones - but these gradients are stunning! So many beautiful pattern possibilities!

    Caron Colorama Halo Colorways

So what is this Perfect Phasing thing? It's the way the colors change from one to the other within the skein. Most multi-colored yarns feature a hard color break where you go from one to the other - even when it's a lighter shade to a darker shade. But with Perfect Phasing, you'd be hard-pressed to figure out where exactly the color changes - because it changes smoothly and continuously throughout! And every cake of Caron Colorama Halo is the same, starting and ending at the same spot in the colorway - letting you plan your Perfect Project!

16 Free Crochet and Knit Patterns for Caron Colorama Halo

Speaking of which... While the put-up may have changed, the patterns remain - and there are some new ones featuring the new cake colors too! As of this writing, there are 16 free crochet and knit patterns featuring Caron Colorama Halo on their site - 8 knit, and 8 crochet!

    Caron Colorama Halo Patterns

While I haven't had a chance to use the cake version, I do love using Caron Colorama Halo. I took advantage of the beautiful ombre of the Beeswax Frost colorway to make the Golden Halo Mobius - a free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK Fade Set Giveaway

July 24, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 116 Comments

Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK Fade Set Giveaway - Moogly

One of the highlights of our trip to Ireland was a stop at Hedgehog Fibers in Cork! We were so lucky to get to see the showroom and purchase some of their gorgeous hand-dyed yarns. And the luck didn't end there - after I got home, they reached out about giving away a Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK Fade Set here on Moogly! Wow! Check out this stunning set, and enter to win here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This giveaway is sponsored by Hedgehog Fibers. All opinions are my own.

    Meet Hedgehog Fibers

Hedgehog Fibers was founded by Beata Jezek. Originally from Slovakia, she moved to Ireland seeking opportunity. And she found it in yarn! Dissatisfied with the yarns available in Ireland at the time, she started dyeing her own - and as soon as others spotted it, they had to have it. Hedgehog Fibers has never advertised - the product speaks for itself, and word-of-mouth was all they needed to open a small studio in 2010.

Doing our best to clean out the Hedgehog Fibers Showroom

Their multinational team of mainly women is constantly working to improve sustainability, employing a rigorous 3x quality control process to make sure each hank is perfect when you get it. They strive to "under-promise and over-deliver!"

    Hedgehog Fibers Colorways Sample

And their mission statement encapsulates this so well: "Hedgehog Fibres carefully & lovingly create the brightest colours, with the best materials, so each stitch you knit is a surprise, and each finished project looks as amazing as you feel."

    Hedgehog Fibers Bases

So Let's get to the Yarn

There are so many great things to see and do on the Hedgehog Fibers website - from free patterns to club signups to a map of retailers from around the world. But what we're all really interested in right now is the yarn! They offer 14 yarn bases and currently have 158 colorways listed. But the shop page has everything currently ready to go!

Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK Fade Set Giveaway on Moogly

It's easy to get lost in all the possibilities! So let's hone in on today's giveaway - a hand-picked Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK Fade Set! I mean... have you ever seen anything so pretty?

Hedgehog Fibers Merino DK Fade Set Giveaway on Moogly

Here is the description for their Merino DK yarn: "DK weight yarn, 100% Merino wool, superwash. Smooth, soft, non-scratchy yarn with a tighter twist and a round profile. Great all purpose workhorse yarn, next to the skin soft. Wonderful stitch definition. The ideal yarn sweaters, scarves, hats, anything you can think of! Sold in approx. 100g skeins/200m. Super Soft Super Saver...Brushed!

Sure, you've tried Red Heart Super Saver - but have you tried Red Heart Super Saver Brushed? This yarn shares a name and fiber content, as well as a great skein size and easy care with the original. But the feel is very different! Brushed features a soft halo, creating a soft and fuzzy fabric that is extra cozy.

Of course, you can use regular Red Heart Super Saver or your favorite medium-weight yarn to make the Ribbon Run Hat. To make both the hat and the Ribbon Run Scarf I used just 2 skeins of the gray and 1 skein of the white - with a bit left over of each!

    The Details

My Notes: Marie has written a beautiful square pattern for us, with a lovely variety of stitches and textures! The pattern is easy and relaxing to follow, center out, and pretty solid.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Bobbles, Standing Single Crochet, BLO (Back Loop Only), Chainless Starting Double Crochet, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: I have a bigger gauge than Marie, so I got to 12" after Rnd 16 (which I, therefore, chose to work from the RS).

    Rnd 1 - 3: Light Gray
    Rnd 4 and 5:
    Pewter
    Rnd 6:
    White
    Rnd 7 and 8:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 9:
    Pewter
    Rnd 10 and 11:
    White
    Rnd 12 - 14:
    Light Gray
    Rnd 15:
    Pewter
    Rnd 16:
    White
Remainder of Rnds skipped for size.

This square required moderate blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

    Rainbow Lanyard Tutorial

July 13, 2023 by Tamara Kelly Leave a Comment

Rainbow Crochet Lanyard - Free Crochet Pattern and Tutorial on Moogly

The Rainbow Lanyard is an older pattern on Moogly, dating all the way back to 2012! And it's just as popular today for those who need to keep their keys and cards close. While this is a beginner-level pattern, I've had several requests for a tutorial. So here I will share how to crochet the Rainbow Lanyard!

Disclaimer: Live videos are unscripted, unedited, occasionally weird, and all opinions are my own. Thar be affiliate links down below.

This simple pattern is great for leftover bits of yarn and doing some stash-busting! Try to pick a yarn that feels good against the skin and doesn't have a lot of stretch. While I used a simple keyring, you should feel free to add a breakaway clasp for safety if desired!

How to Make the Rainbow Lanyard: Tutorial

    Golden Lucy Crafts: Designer Showcase

Golden Lucy Crafts Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features Olena Jones of Golden Lucy Crafts! Her designs are always so happy, seasonal, fun, and approachable! Learn more about this talented crochet designer, and get 5 free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

    A Bit About the Designer

I first noticed Olena's designs on Pinterest - she always has something new and cute that catches my eye! So I was delighted to learn more about her in this Designer Showcase!

    Here's a bit about Olena:

Olena Jones of Golden Lucy Crafts

Hi, I am Olena, the crochet designer behind GoldenLucyCrafts.com. I grew up in Ukraine and during my childhood, I was surrounded by many handmade items created by my mom and both of my grandmothers. My mom taught me how to knit and crochet when I was a young girl and the first thing I crocheted was a doily. When I was about 15, I learned how to sew. Since then, crocheting, knitting and sewing have been a big part of my life.

Now I live in the Pacific Northwest of the United States with my very supportive husband, our son, and our super active golden retriever Hazel. Our previous golden Lucy was my first big dog love, and she became my model and inspiration for my crochet designs for dogs. She also gave her name to my blog – GoldenLucyCrafts. I have many fond memories of crocheting with Golden Lucy at my feet, and look forward to Hazel carrying on this tradition once she settles down!

I love to design various things, but most of all appliques. I like that after I create the design, the applique starts its next life. I use appliques to create wall art for home décor, greeting cards, garlands, etc.

I am also a certified crochet instructor and have contributed some of my designs to crochet digital magazines.

Besides crocheting, I am enjoying cooking, reading, gardening, and spending time outdoors with my family.

    Grab that Bernat Blanket!

I love using Bernat Blanket for my large amigurumi squishes, and the Penguin Squish is no exception! For this one, I used a white skein, a blank skein, and a bit of leftover yellow from the Duck Squish!

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This crochet penguin pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes, but this pattern has not been tested for safety for children under 3 years of age. If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the eyes and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely. If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

    The Details

My Notes: Carolyn is a brilliant pattern writer, and her squares are always a pleasure to make. This square is interesting, beautiful, center-out, and works up in an evening. The finishing options are perfect, and the finished square barely needs any blocking at all!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Bobbles, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, and Seamless Finishing.

Sizing: This square offers a variety of finishing options, depending on how your sizing is working out - love that! I ended up using the hdc instructions for Rnd 11.

    Color A: Pewter
    Color B:
    Light Gray
    Color C:
    White

This square required a very mild blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Happier Hatting with the babé crochet Hat Templates Giveaway

July 3, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 48 Comments

Happier Hatting with the babé crochet Hat Templates Giveaway on Moogly

It's "Christmas in July" season and that means it's the perfect time to make all those hats for holiday gifting. And around here, that means time to break out the babé crochet Hat Templates! In fact... I used them to design a new hat pattern coming later this month! Check out this amazing tool for all hat makers (both crochet and knit!), and enter to win a set here on Moogly - we're giving away THREE full sets!

Disclaimer: This giveaway is sponsored by babé Crochet. All opinions are my own.

Are you New to babé crochet Hat Templates?!

They're templates that tell you how big to make your hats to fit every size - no math needed! Here's a video from babé Crochet on TikTok with more info on how they work:

    @babecrochetco How to use the Izzy Crochet Hat Tool Now out ! See bio for shop 🔗 Was £27 but now £21.95 (from UK). Was $45 but now $39.99 (from US retailer) #crochethattool #crochethat #fyp #hatmaking #hattemplate #crochethat #crochethat #crochettool #crochethatpattern #crochethattemplate #crochethattool #babyhattemplate #crochetbabyhat ♬ original sound - babecrochetco

Rather than breaking out a tape measure every round and consulting endless charts, you can grab the template for the size of the hat you're making and toss it in your project bag. If you crochet for a big family - or craft fairs - you can put together a set of templates with your most needed sizes to whip them up faster than ever! I've been using them ever since I learned about them!

And they are so easy to use! Working top down, you match the size of your flat circle to the top of the curve. Then, work even until it's the length of the template. Can it really be that easy? Yep! While these templates say crochet, they work just as well for knitting - no matter the craft, heads come in the same sizes! 😉

    Babe Crochet Hat Templates

By Once, Use It for Life

These hat templates are made from strong, recyclable plastic, with the template number embossed in the plastic. With each set, you'll receive a great chart with all the sizing info, a wire ring to keep the templates and chart organized, and a  tutorial on how to use the templates.

Each full set includes baby to adult head sizes from Newborn all the way up to Adult XL (Head circumferences of 34.95cm up to 61.6cm -- 13 ¾" up to 24 ¼’) - the perfect set!

    babé crochet hat templates sizes

If you've been reading Moogly for a while, you know that I'm a big fan of babé crochet Hat Templates - they are just so gosh darn handy! So as long as she's willing to share, I'll keep sharing them with all of you! ♥

Yarn Craftee Designer Showcase on Moogly

This month's Designer Showcase features Rose Obomighie of Yarn Craftee! I noticed her work several years ago - her crochet patterns are so appealing! Learn more about this talented crochet designer, and get 5 free crochet patterns here on Moogly!

    A Bit About the Designer

I've been admiring Rose's designs for years now, and was so excited to learn more about her!

Here's a bit more about Rose:

Yarn Craftee Designer Showcase on Moogly

Hello fantastic crocheters and readers, I am thankful for the chance to be on the Designer Showcase on the Moogly blog; I think that name should be trademarked. Lol! (I mean that in a good way). When I first thought to start writing patterns in 2017, Moogly was my reference point. I was relatively new to crochet, understood the basics, and was aiming for more knowledge. I would often come to Moogly blog and read the patterns row for row and frame my patterns in a similar way. Who better to learn from than a professional in the field, and I did learn a lot.

My name is Rose Obomighie, Obom for short, and I am a sister, friend, mother, wife, crochet designer, pattern writer, crochet blogger, YouTuber, and lifelong learner. I indulge in tea a lot and would try as many varieties as I can lay my hand on, I’m fortunate to have friends who are always giving me new ones to try. I also enjoy writing letters and whimsical notes to friends and acquaintances.

One of the things I like about crochet is the power it gives each and every crocheter to create something. It does not matter whether you are using someone else’s pattern or creating by heart, the fact that a person can put hook to yarn and make something is truly amazing, and THAT is what keeps me crocheting. Crochet is therapy and I feel very blessed to have the skill and knowledge to create with a hook and yarn.

My crochet journey has been adventurous, even though there were times I felt very lost and alone in the journey, I have also persevered, found purpose, and met some fantastic and supportive designers. I started my first blog in 2017 called loopinglymade, which later got changed to craft-her. The name change still did not make me feel better about my designs. One day, I decided to start all over again, thus I started a new blog- Yarn Craftee. Here, the designs I share are true and close to my heart, most of the patterns are new, and some are updates from my previous blog. My designs may not always have a story, but they are like a testament to me that even if I fail, I can try again and learn from my failures.

And that’s a message I would like to pass on as you read this post. I hope that as you crochet; make mistakes, rip out a few or many rows of stitches that you are learning something new and that your skills will improve as you persevere to finish that project. I know it sounds corny, but this craft is full of emotion- the joy and pride you feel after a completed project is divine! Isn’t it?

All About My Craftours Trip to Ireland

June 23, 2023 by Tamara Kelly 15 Comments

    Moogly's Trip to Ireland

What an amazing adventure! Going to Ireland has always been a dream of mine, and to have it come true is almost too much to believe. The memories are ones I will cherish for a lifetime. Here's what we did! Thank you to Gloria Hole, Rita Sturiale, Nicole Hughes, Jessie Rayot, and Deidra Russel for sharing your photos, and capturing some of the moments I missed!

    DAY 1 - Saturday, June 3rd - I arrive in Dublin

After a long, long, long day of travel, I arrived in Dublin! The Maldron Hotel was my refuge as I collapsed into sleep. I hadn't really been able to sleep on the plane over, and the night before that I was too nervous to sleep. So I was very grateful to the hotel for getting me in my room early so I could rest. I grabbed dinner at the hotel and went right back to bed. Well, I tried. Jet lag is real, ya'll!

DAY 2 - Sunday, June 4th - Everyone else arrives and we go to Galway

After a quick (but pricey!) continental breakfast, I raced back to the airport to meet our tour guide Agnes and the rest of our travelers. There were 18 of us in total, and I couldn't have asked for a better group of people! I knew a few of them already, but over the next few days, they all became friends. Agnes and our bus driver Dom were phenomenal, and made hopping straight onto a bus way more fun than it sounds!

We stopped for a quick lunch, then continued the 3-hour journey to Galway. Once there, we had a panoramic bus tour of the city and got to walk around for a bit. There was a maker's market happening in front of a medieval cathedral, and we got to visit Galway Cathedral as well. I found a few souvenirs for friends before landing at the Ardilaun Hotel for our welcome dinner that night. Then blessed sleep.

Day 3 - Monday, June 5th - It's all about the sheep... and castles!

Good thing we got some rest because Monday was go go go! We started off our journey with a stop at a bog - like the kind where they found the famous bog bodies! It wasn't at all what I pictured - the water was clear and cool, and the scene was stunning. There were sheep dotting the fields around us, and you could see where they were cutting peat to burn later.

Back in the bus and we were off to Kylemore Abbey and Gardens, which used to be Kylemore Castle. It was built in 1867, by Mitchell and Margaret Henry, and the public rooms feature their belongings, including a pair of delicate gloves that I'm pretty sure were crocheted! There is a Gothic cathedral on the grounds, and it all felt quite surreal. The Benedictine Nuns arrived in 1920, and they established a school that was open until 2010. Today, Kylemore Abbey is still run by the nuns - but where the visitors don't really see them.

Back on the bus once more, we were off to the Connemara Sheep and Wool Centre, where we ate lunch, shopped, and saw spinning and weaving demos. A few of us tried out carding and spinning - but that loom was intense!

Our final stop of the day was Killary Sheep Farm, where we got to get up close and personal with the yarn-on-the-hoof! This is a working farm overlooking the Killary Fjord, and I can't image a more beautiful setting to work in. We started off by hearing about how they train the dogs to herd the sheep - and then we got to see Rex the sheepdog in action! I was amazed at how well he listened, and how attuned he was to his master's voice. Then it was time to sheer a sheep, and feed and hold the baby lambs! Such a treat!

After a quick dinner at the hotel, it was time for a talk and demonstration from the Headford Lace Project! Two wonderful volunteers showed us what makes Headford Lace unique, and how to make it. It kind of broke my brain - it's somehow simultaneously so simple... and impressively complex. It was fascinating hearing about how the woman and girls made the lace and did so much for their families - despite being paid a pittance. I purchased a print of one of the cottages in support of the group, and just have to decide where to hang it!

Day 4 - Tuesday, June 6th - Time to rest and learn

After such a busy day it was a relief to sit and stitch! We started off the morning with my first workshop, introducing the Irish Adventure Bag. Of course, I didn't get any pictures of that, I was busy teaching! But after a quick lunch in the hotel cafe, we were back in the classroom for a needle felting workshop taught by Belinda from Chasing Dreams Felt Art. The 3 hours just flew by, and everyone's projects were amazing!

After class, we had the rest of the day and evening free, so it was time to get out and explore! Our first stop was a real Irish pub, Thirteen on the Green. I headed for this one specifically, as it was formerly known as Garvey's Pub - and one of their distant relatives is a close friend of mine here in Iowa! We saw lots of street art and had lots of fun wandering around. I finished the night with Dingle Sea Salt Ice Cream from Murphy's - delicious!

Day 5 - Wednesday, June 7th - Cliffs and more castles

This morning we said goodbye to Galway and headed back out on the bus, exploring the Irish countryside. Everyone says it's a beautiful country, and it really does look like the photos. Crumbling towers and castles dot the green fields marked by stone walls dating back centuries.

Eventually, we stopped at the Cliffs of Moher! Featured in numerous artworks as well as movies, we were able to spot the caves where Harry Potter found a Horcrux as well as the Cliffs of Insanity from The Princess Bride. Even without the movie references, it was a stunning view worth the long hike up. (And there's a golf cart for those who can't make the trek.)

Back in the bus again, we headed to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, which was straight out of a storybook. Here we explored the castle, which the MacNamara family built around 1425! It was occupied as a family home right up until 1804. Today it's full of authentic medieval furniture and tapestries, complete with tight and twisty (and slightly scary) staircases. The surrounding Folk Park features over 30 buildings - some set up to represent how people lived in ages past, and some filled with artisans selling their handmade wares. Many more souvenirs were purchased here! Lunch included some of the most delicious potato salad I've ever eaten (sorry, Mom!).

Finally, we landed at the Brehon Hotel Killarney, which might have been my favorite hotel on the trip. (The Ardilaun was a strong second!) There I had some lovely Irish stew and tried a bit of Sticky Toffee Pudding. I spent that evening prepping for my next workshop in the morning!

Day 6 - Thursday, June 8th - Yarny and Blarney

This morning I taught my second and last workshop of the trip, going over some of the trickier bits of the Irish Adventure Bag. Our session flew by far too fast, but I know that many got the hang of it - and others are looking forward to the video tutorials along with the rest of you. Thank you to Gloria for getting a rare picture of me teaching! One of the best surprises came from Laura Jack, who told me that the front cable pattern of the bag is meant to represent the stone walls and fields of western Ireland. I wish I could say I planned it, but it was quite a happy coincidence!

Then off we went to the surprise of the trip - a stop at the Hedgehog Fibers Showroom! This was a rare treat - and our group had so much fun shopping the beautiful hand-dyed yarns. Even Agnes, our tour guide (first row on the right), couldn't resist the allure of the pretty pretty colors. Of course, I got a couple myself - watch for them to show up in future projects!

Our last official stop of the day was Blarney Castle and Woolen Mills. More shopping, and an opportunity to kiss the stone - though I'm not sure any of our group went through with that part. We took some photos of the castle (you can see a bit of it from the parking lot for free) and we wandered the grounds. I had a quiche for lunch - with still more amazing potato salad!

That evening we were free to explore Killarney, and we had a fantastic dinner at The Porterhouse. I recommend the Crispy Chicken Wings and Parmesan and Garlic Fries, but I have it on good authority the Pork Belly was a great choice as well. And the signs on the bathroom doors were amusing enough to need photographing as well.

Day 7 - Friday, June 9th - Back to Dublin

In shock that things were already winding down, we boarded the bus to head back to Dublin, where we would finish out our stay at the Hilton Kilmainham, the most "American style" of all our stays. It was a long day of driving, but on the way we made a couple of stops. The first was a visit to Adare Village, where we were able to grab a cuppa and wander down a street full of cottages featuring thatched roofs. Once the cheap way to roof a home, nowadays it's quite pricey - but still beautiful and oh-so picturesque.

Thatched roof cottage in Adare Village

Up next we stopped at Springwools, the largest yarn store in Ireland! By American standards, it wasn't overly large, but I did of course find something to purchase - and some purchased enough that the shop agreed to mail it back for them. And one of the magazines in the shop featured a pattern by one of the members of our group, Andee Graves!

That evening we were free to explore Dublin, having a drink at The Boar's Head and landing at a random restaurant for fish and chips - Friday night in Dublin is busy busy so we weren't picky! We finished our adventures with a much sought-after bubble waffle gelato cone from Cloud Nine. It was as tasty as I'd hoped, and we enjoyed our ice cream seated on a sidewalk bench listening to live Irish music. A passing elderly couple was astonished we were eating ice cream so late at night - but when it's light out until 10:30pm it doesn't feel that late!

Day 8 - Saturday, June 10th - Oh deer, it's the last day

Our final day of the trip started off with a panoramic bus tour of Dublin, dropping us off right near some of the biggest attractions. There were more historic buildings and sculptures and monuments than I could hope to keep track of, and on this day I just about walked my feet off! One of the most surprising sites was this large herd of deer, just chilling out in the park in the heart of Dublin! Even the locals were astonished, as they are usually more reclusive.

Our first big stop was the National Museum of Ireland Archeology. There we saw prehistoric and neolithic artifacts, including some actual bog bodies. I've chosen not to share my photos here, as they are a bit graphic - but you can click here to see the photos on the museum website. There were displays on medieval life in Ireland, including the Vikings who came, and I spotted some weaving tools as well as ancient drop spindles!

We lunched at Beshoff Bros, where I had the best fish and chips and the very best mushy peas of the whole trip! If you are gluten-free or traveling with someone who is, this is a must-stop on the itinerary. After lunch, we explored the courtyard of Dublin Castle, the scene of numerous historical events (and a spot you might recognize if you've watched the film, Michael Collins).

Finally, it was time to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. Photographing the book itself isn't allowed, but there is an informative exhibit before the book and lots of photo ops in the Long Room. Again, this might look familiar to Harry Potter movie fans!

Thoroughly worn out, we joined our fellow travelers for a final farewell dinner back at the hotel. It was hard to believe it was all over, and that these strangers turned friends were no longer going to be the faces I saw every day, accompanying me on fantastic adventures.

Day 9 - Sunday, June 11th - Fly away home

A final bus ride took us to the Dublin airport, where we all boarded a flight to JFK. We were all sat together, continuing the good group feelings for just a few hours more. At the airport, there were group hugs and maybe a tear or two as we finally said our goodbyes. My final flights home weren't until Monday, so I spent the night at an airport hotel. As a final hurrah, dinner was at Neir's Tavern, where they filmed scenes from Goodfellas as well as Tower Heist. I can't say I've seen either film, but the burger was delicious!

Getting home on Monday started way to early and ended way later than scheduled (gotta love unscheduled plane maintenance), and while I'm so glad it happened, I'm also glad to be home again. I am eternally grateful to all of my fellow travelers for making this an unforgettable experience I will treasure forever. And that includes my most special souvenirs - a book handmade by Jessie Rayot, and an original watercolor by Deidra Russel (they both made enough for the whole group - amazing!!).
