Crochet Impkins Review
A Bit About the Author
Author Megan Lapp runs the Etsy shop Crafty Intentions, and it's full of amazing, legendary designs, just like the ones seen in her books. Here's how she describes her shop:
"Fantasy creatures, beautiful animals, clearly written and formatted patterns, step by step photo tutorials, for handmade magic! Detailed glossaries, materials lists, and extremely clear instructions to ensure your success in creating these epic crocheted creations!"
Her shop is full of delights - and sure to make your dreams soar! There are dozens of wonderful creatures, but there are also a couple of shawls that are the kind of costume pieces you wish you could wear every day and live your own magical fairy tale!
What are Crochet Impkins?
I think I better let Megan explain this one:
"I’m sure you have seen them out of the corner of your eye from time to time, racing from hiding place to nook or cranny—odd little creatures of stitch and stuffing, of endless variety in form and manner. In these pages, you will not find a taxonomy of their features or a list of the names by which you might call them, you will find guidance on something far more important—the techniques and methods by which you might craft one of these little stitchlings of your very own.

It is a wonderful thing, I assure you, to bring an Impkin to life with hook and yarn, and herein you will find the detailed instructions necessary to craft one, with an endless array of options for ears, antennae, hats, wings, tails, scales, horns, hairstyles, clothing, and accessories. Each Impkin is unique, and only you can listen to find out what yours longs to be. Stitch by stitch, you’ll cast a spell, until at last you have made a brand-new creature. Don’t be surprised if it asks for a snazzy vest or a satchel to hold its treasures!
Though hard to spot at first, when you see one Impkin you can be sure there are more around. Impkins are social little creatures; once you make one, it is sure to clamor for a multitude of friends from your hook!"

And they're adorable! Paging through Crochet Impkins feels like a buffet of amazing choices - luckily, we know where to get started!
Creating Millions of Unique Crochet Impkins
While Crochet Impkins might not teach you how to crochet, it will teach you how to create your own amigurumi creature - and how to make each one unique! I mean it when I say I don't think you could run out of possibilities here. Fortunately, Megan takes us through the steps quickly and easily, with a quick intro and a fabulous planning sheet. (Break out the scanner, you'll want to make copies!)

Using this sheet, you can start paging through and making your choices. There are 4 basic body styles to choose from: two sitting, and two standing. Pick one of two arm styles, and one of the four belly options, and you're in business!

After that, we start at the top - there are 4 antenna styles, 11 ears options, 6 face styles, 21 different hats and hairstyles, 6 types of horns and antlers... You get the idea! Scales, tails, wings, outfits, and accessories all add to the fun. Like a deck of cards, you can mix and match these forever and never make the same amigurumi twice! Add in all the color options, safety eyes, and yarn weights, and wow!

Of course, Crochet Impkins is chock full of super cute examples of these combos - and each picture includes a circle with the details you need to make one just like it. There are so many "stitchlings" here to get you started!

All the projects pictured are made with worsted weight yarn and a US-G, 4mm crochet book. Megan has a few suggestions, including Red Heart Super Saver. But I think these designs would be just as amazing in a thread - or jumbo yarn! If you or someone you love is into fantasy creatures, both Crochet Impkins and Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend are must-haves for your crochet bookshelf!

Hi Nancy! She doesn't say what size she uses (that I could find in the book), but she does mention that most of the eyes are the "Killer Kawaii" eyes from DarksideCrochet.BigCartel.com 🙂 I hope that helps!

Katelyn Lacey says
Oh awesome, would be really cool to win the actual books. I have a lot of patterns online from you. They are so amazing! Always get compliments and questions about the pieces. And in one craft community I’m known as the ‘Mother of dragons’ for all the dragons I’ve made up 🤣
Mary says
I saw this book, and loved it. Asked it for a Christmas gift. I started one two days ago. I am an experienced crochet. Be crocheting for over 50 years. But this pattern is not easy. The worse one I have come across. The way it is wrote is hard to understand. First I tried a sitting one and gave it up, now a standing one. I don’t like the belly at all. I will find some other way to do it. Not for a beginner. I love all the Impkins so much I will work at it. I will try one in DK yarn. Hope I can get my head round it.
Tamara Kelly says
Oh no! Thank you so much for the feedback.
