Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets Review
A Bit About the Author
Esme Crick is now the author of two books - in addition to Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets, she wrote the gorgeous Mosaic Crochet Workshop! Here's a bit more about her:
"Esme Crick has spent most of her life designing, making, writing, and giving far too much attention to her various needy cats. She learned to crochet when her children were tiny, and she hasn't stopped since. She is best known for her modern crochet designs - she loves to test the boundaries of this traditional craft by mixing up different styles and techniques to create her own, unique style of crochet.
Working under the name Red Sparrow Crochet, her bold, geometric designs have appeared in many magazines, yarn publications, and of course in her previous book Mosaic Crochet Workshop. She lives in Suffolk England, with her partner, their two children, and their extremely grumpy cat, Hank Deluxe. Esme goes by the name Red Sparrow Crochet on social media. You can find her blog at redsparrowcrochet.blogspot.com and her Etsy shop at etsy.com/uk/shop/RedSparrowCrochet." Please note that while Esme lives in the UK, this book is written in US terms!
100 patterns? 1000s of throws!?!
Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets is a unique crochet pattern book. It's sort of like a crochet stitch dictionary designed specifically for afghans! The "How To Use This Book" page explains it in depth, but the basic concept is simple. The book starts off with a handful of inspiration patterns - examples of fully finished blankets made with the patterns found in the next section.
And it's this next section where you get to play! It's filled with 100 different "Strip Patterns." These are the stitch patterns that you can mix and match for thousands and thousands of possibilities! "Each strip is worked back and forth along its short edge, so there's no tediously long starting chain..." so you can work them to whatever length you want for the width of your blanket.
Then, you simply stitch or sew the strips together, side by side, to create the height (or width, if you like your stripes vertical)! You can use whatever seaming method you prefer - crocheting or sewing. Esme does have a recommendation, however - the whip stitch, which is the easiest method of all! The final touch is adding some sort of edging - but what that is, is up to you.
Highly Recommended
Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets includes tons of fantastic tips, tricks, and guidance to help you get the most out of this book. And I really do love the wide selection of patterns included! The patterns themselves are divided into 8 sections: Classic, Texture, Mosaic, Filet, Embellishment, Ribbing and Cables, Tapestry, and Bobbles, Puffs, and Popcorns. Each pattern includes written instructions as well as a chart - love that! There is such a phenomenal variety here, it's really quite impressive!
I really think this book is wonderfully clever, and such a smart way to create an afghan pattern book! With Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets you can make a lifetime of blankets, each unique. Any yarn, any weight, any color - this book will help turn you into a beautiful baby blanket, throw, or couch-sized afghan! And of course, this book can also be used to make gorgeous rugs, scarves, cowls, and even tote bags!

Usually if I make a blanket, it's baby/toddler sized. But I'm looking at this book and all its lovely mix and match patterns and thinking it would be great for ruanas and ponchos as I make more of those.
Efrat
Amazing and beautiful throws hope to get or buy the book
LeighAnn
What a wonderful idea! I agree it is tedious to start with a very long chain to make a wide blanket. And what fun to create something with multiple stitches on the same blanket.
Debbie
What a great way to use up leftover yarn! I like it!
Joanne
I usually make throw-sized blankets, although I would like to make a summer bedspread sometime.
Kitten With A Whiplash
I mostly make full size blankets for my bed. Right now it has a favorite from the 1980s on it. I've also made baby blankets, but they tend to be of a size to carry on through the toddler years and perhaps beyond. Did a queen size for Mom. Get me started on a blanket, and I just don't wanna stop! There's a real danger of it turning into a Universe Cozy.
shoshana vogel
i usually make either baby blankets or full size for beds
Alysia

Kathleen Lee
Ooh! This is a brilliant idea! What a great way to make individual blankets from various components. I've always been to afraid to try and combine parts from different patterns.

Melanie Titus
I'm usually a baby blanket maker, but I like to make them a bit bigger than your "normal" sized baby blanket. I like to make them big enough so that when the baby becomes a toddler and bigger, they can still drag the blankie around and then wrap up in it for a snuggle and lie down later. I also enjoy making single size blankets/lap throws, it makes me happy to know I am bringing comfort to individuals. I usually try to donate them to older folks or people who may have mobility issues. But really, anyone is welcome to my makes, lol, as long as they bring them comfort and joy!!
Connie Dews
Most of my blankets are around 50" x 60". You have to be very special to get bigger from me and while it happens, it's not all the time. I seldom make small blankets even for babies because they grow so fast. And I like that mom or dad can cuddle with them under the blanket. Then when they are older, they can enjoy it all to themselves. I can envision them using the blanket for as long as they live.
Wendy Robertson
I like to make blankets for my kids, so some odd size between throw and twin. Nothing official 🙂
