    Wrap Around Stitches

February 26, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 10 Comments

The Wrap Around Stitch isn't so much a particular stitch - more so a technique, or class of stitches. So I cannot demonstrate every one out there - because someone will always be inventing a new variation! But the idea behind it, the basic technique, should transfer to any pattern. So with that in mind, here's how to crochet Wrap Around stitches!

Wrap Around Stitches are a great way to add a new element of texture and fun to your crochet! Learn how to make them with this video and photo tutorial! ♥ #crochet

    A New Stitch

I've been wanting to try out wrapped stitches for a while now, and by the time I finished the Wrapped Ombre Tote Bag crochet pattern I was in love!

Wrapped Ombre Tote Bag: free #crochet pattern from Moogly! ♥

While there are lots of variations of wrapped stitches, I've included a video tutorial for this version, linked below.

Relax with the Wrapped Ombre Tote Bag

And an easily memorized 2 row repeat makes it even better! The Wrapped Ombre Tote Bag is a great stash buster too. I used up some worsted weight cotton I had laying around, but you can use any fiber you like - acrylic, wool, you name it! I used nearly a full skein of the white and dark purple, and less of the other three colors.

    Baby Mine Crochet Hat

February 13, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 29 Comments

Baby Mine Crochet Hat: free #crochet pattern for babies, toddlers, and kids!

The Baby Mine Crochet Hat is the follow-up to the adult version! This year, it's time to add the baby, toddler, and child sizes! And since they're little, there's still time to whip one up for Valentine's Day - or any day!

Prefer an ad-free PDF? You've got options!

Prefer the free blog version? Keep scrolling!

    Crochet Hats for All!

These hats are a little different from the adult version - in particular the brim. This brim has a lot more stretch! This way, the baby hat will fit almost all year! The toddler hat for the next couple of years, and the child version for a few years after that. This takes them up until they're ready for the adult version!

They'll be slouchy at the start, and become beanies as the kids grow. (If you want to make the adult version with this brim, that works too. Just use the exact same stitch count!)

Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers Tutorial

February 12, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 21 Comments

Learn how to #crochet the Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers from Moogly with this video tutorial!

The Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers have been popular since they debuted a year ago! They take only an evening to make, fit both narrow and wide feet sizes 6 - 11, and use just one skein of yarn. Lovely! But making the cable portion has tripped some people up, and they asked for a video. So here's how to make the Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers!

Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers Video Tutorial - Right Handed

Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers Video Tutorial - Left Handed

The original pattern, found HERE, includes a step by step photo tutorial, as well as the written directions and details, so I didn't want to reproduce those here. If you want to follow along with the video and the written instructions, I recommend opening them up in two tabs so you can go back and forth. Or, watch the video first and then head over to the written pattern - it's up to you! The video only includes the right foot, but the left is very close, as you'll see - just watch the numbers before and after the cable sections. Otherwise, they're the same!

I hope this video helps out those who've had trouble. It's a fun, fast pattern - and the slippers are so warm! If you can't find Lion Brand Wool Ease Chunky, you can try regular Wool Ease doubled up. And with a bit more yarn, you can turn them into boots by adding some simple cuffs! If you're looking for a way to make them non-stick, be sure to check out this roundup of 7 great non-stick slipper methods!

    Circle of Love Afghan

January 31, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 120 Comments

Circle of Love Afghan on MooglyThe Circle of Love Afghan tells a love story in the stitches. Moments of clarity, bursts of brightness, a deep ombre of feeling, and an oversized ruffle to share. And it always comes around again, if you stick with it. Perfect for Valentine's Day - or any day!

Circle of Love Afghan! Cuddle up with your love with this free #crochet pattern from Moogly!

    A Swirl of Crocheted Love

The Circle of Love Afghan is solid, cozy, warm, and fun to make. This blanket doesn't lie down, calm and flat - it's slightly hyperbolic... or you might say it's exuberant and generous!

The posts stitches point the way, with a gentle curve that always comes back to the heart. The red peeks of color between the hearts create a dashed line that ties it the love together, and while there might be some cloudy gray, it just makes the love all the sweeter!

    Notes on Stitches and Sizing:

    1. On rounds where you break the yarn and finish off, you can do so using your preferred method, or the Seamless Join (linked above). If you use the Seamless Join, be sure to join to the 2nd st of the round, not the first, to maintain stitch counts.
    2. You can join the new color for a new round using a sl st and ch 2 (which does not count as a stitch), and then dc (as written), or you can use the Standing Double Crochet (linked above).
    3. When starting a new round with the same color as the previous round (or as in Round 5), you can ch 2 and crochet as written, or you can use the Chainless Starting Double Crochet (linked above) to replace the first dc of the round.
    4. No turns! This blanket is worked with a definite right side and wrong side. But don't worry, the wrong side looks pretty good too.
    5. If you wish to make a baby sized blanket, stop after Round 29 and add your border. If you wish to make a lap sized blanket, stop after Round 38 or 47, as you prefer.

Make It Work: Getting Afghan Squares to the Size You Need!

January 16, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 38 Comments

The year was 2008, and I was participating in my first crochet-a-long. I wasn't designing yet - I was still very much in a learn all the things stage, having only discovered a few years prior that crochet was on the internet! And I found a year long afghan block crochet-a-long on Ravelry, and decided to join in and take my skills to the next level. It was a fantastic decision. I learned many techniques and stitches, and one of the things I quickly learned was how to adjust my squares to get them all to the target size!

When you make an afghan from squares, size is a factor. You're going to want to get each square as close to the target size as possible. Here's how! #crochet

Linked Double Crochet in a Spiral

January 15, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 30 Comments

Since sharing the Linked Double Crochet and Linked Treble Crochet tutorials, I've been asked how to work them in the round. I've only seen one pattern where linked stitches were worked in rounds, and the joining technique to avoid a hole was rather difficult - despite practice I never could make it look good. Luckily, it's much easier to work linked stitches in spirals. Here's how I do it.

    Standing Half Double Crochet

January 8, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 25 Comments

The Standing Double Crochet tutorial is popular for showing how to join a new color to a project without having to slip stitch and chain - very cool!
