The pint sized literary heroine Eloise has inspired a few patterns here on Moogly – the Eloise Baby Sweater, Girls Sweater, and Bonnet. And now I have another one for you – with the same palette, stitches, and attitude, but this one is fit for boys and girls, newborns to adults! Eloise once said, “An egg cup makes a very good hat.” I’d like to think she’d like this one even better.

This pattern uses foundation double crochet stitches for a stretchier, more elastic brim. If you prefer, you can chain (the number of fdc listed plus 2) and dc the first round instead. The larger sizes have some slouch – for more or less slouchiness, just add or omit some of the rows that are worked evenly. The pom poms are fun, but completely optional!

love this easy to follow pattern. Thank you
Brenda
For some reason when I try to open your blog it shwos up tall and skinny with really tiny print. Any idea why?
Ursula
I wish there was a manageable and downloadable version of the pattern that was also printable.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Ursala! There is – the green Print Friendly button creates both those options, as mentioned in the bottom of the pattern. You can read a tutorial for how to use it HERE if you need more help.
Megan
Cute pattern! I’m still a newbie, so can anyone explain to me how to slip stitch the FDC together properly? It seems every time I’ve tried, it looks all wobbly and is only connected at the top. Probably not explaining this right, but hopefully someone will know what I’m talking about! 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Hi Megan! I have a video tutorial for how to join foundation sts to work in rounds HERE, which is also the link in the first line of the pattern. 🙂
Megan
Whoops….guess I should read more carefully! Thanks for pointing out the link, Tamara! LOVE your blog – I’ve learned so much!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Megan!
Martha
Thanks for the cute “Eloise” inspired hat. Think this will be a good pattern for current charity project for DHR.
Angela
Hi there,
Thank you so much for this lovely pattern. I wonder how you think it would work up in double knitting weighted yarn instead of the worsted weight?
Angela
Tamara Kelly
A bit smaller, most likely! 🙂 You may wish to make one size larger pattern to get the size you want.
Julie galvan
How do you make the teen/small adult size a beanie?
Tamara Kelly
When you get to about 7-7.5 inches in height, start the decrease rows. 🙂
Cathy
Great pattern! One question . . . In the toddler size, am I correct that the repeat rounds are 5 and 6, not 4 and 5? Seems to make more sense. Thanks for posting this Very Good Hat!
Tamara Kelly
Ah yes! Sorry about that. The dangers of writing the same pattern 6 times in a day. 🙂 I’ll correct it!
Cathy
It turned out great! Thanks again for providing the inspiration 🙂
Tamara Kelly
So glad to hear it Cathy! 😀
Karen
Thanks so very much for sharing! I just can’t express enough appreciation for your kindness!! :0)
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Karen! ♥
Pamela
I’m making the Toddler hat. I’m starting R-16. Am I wrong in thinking that this is the round to start decreasing? Directions seem to Increase the stitches by HDB2TOG. Can you please make this clear for me? What I “think” the instructions mean is this: Ch-1, HDC in each of the next 3 stitches. Then *HDC2TOG in the next stitch. HDC in each of the next 5 stitches* repeat to complete the round. Doing this increases my stitches rather than increasing. Or am I supposed to skip stitches? I’m a noob and confused.
Pamela
Nevermind! I see what I’m doing wrong. I was working 2 HDC in the same stitch rather than a HDC in 1 (not completeing) and working in the next stich and THEN completing the stitch. Told you I was a Noob!!! GREAT HAT!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I’m so glad you figured it out!
RITA
THANKU FOR ALL THE FREE PATTERNS,i MADE THE DRESS WITH SIMILAR CLOLRS .WAS HAPPY TO ACCIDENTALLY FIND THIS PATTERN.DO YOU HAVE A STRAWBERRY DRESS AND HAT PATTERN? THANKU ONCE AGAIN .
Tamara Kelly
Hi Rita, and thank you! I’m afraid I don’t have anything like that, but there are lots of strawberry hats on Ravelry!
rita

Rita S
Thank you Tamara for sharing… Made the child size for my son and turned out great
Tamara Kelly
Thank you, I’m so glad you like it!
shiloh
thanks so much for sharing your lovely work with all of us
Tamara Kelly
You are so welcome Shiloh, thank you!
Julie
Hi Tamera. I want to make the teen/small adult but I want to make it a beenie Instead of a sloutch. How tall should I crochet it.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Julie! I would omit Rows 18-21 for a beanie, more if it’s worn as far back on the head as shown. 🙂
Anna
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! Very very pretty! But I was wondering how to make the poof ball for the top of the hat? Thank you so much for sharing!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Anna! There’s a link to the pompom make I used in the pattern! 😀
Anna
Thank you! I didn’t see it.
cassie
I made the toddler sized hat and it is not slouchy at all. I would say it’s just barely big enough to fit my 3 year old 🙁
Tamara Kelly
Hi Cassie! As stated in the pattern, only the larger sizes are slouchy. But you can add or omit some of the rows that are worked evenly to change that!
Kari
When doing the HDC do I do the first on in the joining stitch or the next?
Tamara Kelly
Hdc in the first stitch, the one you joined to – but not in the sl st join itself. 🙂
Kari
Thank you. Also when I do join, so I join to the chain one or the first hdc. Sorry for the silly questions it has been a while since I have made a hat
Kw
For some reason my toddler hat came out huge. It’s over 8″ long
Tamara Kelly
Hi Kw! 8″ long is only about an inch longer than standard for a toddler hat, but you might want to check your gauge! 🙂
Ellen Friedman
I love this pattern but I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong. My seam is slanting to the right with every additional row? Is this normal? The first rows with the front/back post stitches were nice and straight. I’m new to making hats – I think I must be doing something wrong. 🙁
Tamara Kelly
When working in the round it is very normal and expected for the seam to slant to the right. 🙂
SERENA
Have you tried it with yarn other than wool ease? I’m looking to adapt the pattern to the “messy bun” type hat and I like this band vs other types. I’m going to try it tonight with a regular worsted. I assume it should be ok 🙂
Tamara Kelly
I haven’t, but this is a pretty basic pattern, and should adapt well to any yarn. 🙂
Melissa
I want to do the child size hat but would like it to be a slouch beanie. Could you please help me with this, I have no idea how to do that. Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Melissa! To convert any beanie to a slouch, just add a few more rows that are worked even before you make the brim! 🙂 So for this hat specifically, you could work 1 or more stripes like Rnd 14-15, then move on to the Rnd 16 instructions. Does that make sense?
Diann Byrd
I’m working the Teen/Adult version & have a question. Is Round 9 intended to be hdc BLO or a normal hdc through both loops? Thanks so much for this pattern!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Diann! Rnd 9 is regular hdc – through both loops. 🙂
