Kicking Off the 2014 Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-Long: Block #1!

    Published: Jan 9, 2014 · Modified: Jun 28, 2018 by Tamara Kelly · 207 Comments

Welcome to the 2014 Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-Long! I'd been debating doing an afghan square crochet-a-long here on Moogly for a while, and when I did a quick poll on the Moogly Facebook page, the resounding answer was Yes Yes Yes! So let's get started. Read on for details!

Come join the Moogly Afghan CAL 2014! All free #crochet pattern and a great community to make them with!

The Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-Long FAQ: please read!

    1. I will be sharing the photos and links to 24 different 12" afghan square patterns. This is enough for a 4' x 6' afghan - a little bigger after you add the joins and border.
    2. The patterns will all be FREE, from a variety of designers. Please respect copyrights.
    3. All of the patterns will call for a US-I, 5.5 mm hook and worsted or aran weight yarn - yarn symbol 4. Use the yarn(s) of your choice.
    4. I will share a new pattern every other Thursday - this means that 2 months will have 3 patterns. See below for the schedule.
    5. This will also finish up all the blocks in November, leaving the month of December for joining them together.
    6. I will be making the squares right along with you - we'll do it together!
    7. There is no form to fill out, no charge to join, no list to be on. The only prize is the satisfaction of making a blanket and the joy of crochet. And bragging rights, because look what you made!
    8. Worried about missing a square? Sign up for the Moogly Email Newsletter (sign up in the header at the top of the page!) - it includes a link to every post from that week, so you'll be sure to see it.
    9. Want to share your photos as we go? Try the Moogly Facebook Page!
    10. Don't like the square I posted that week? Pick a new one! Want to make a bigger blanket? Make 2 of each or add in your own picks! It's up to you - let's keep it fun!

    The Square Schedule:
    January 8th and 23rd
    February 6th and 20th
    March 6th and 20th
    April 3rd and 17th

What yarn did I choose for this CAL for my own squares? Lion Brand Vanna's choice in Scarlet, White, Fern, and Aqua!

    Moogly-Afghan-CAL-2014-Colors

And here's the Anticipation Mystery Square, as made by Moogly:

Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-long 2014: Come join in! It's all free! :D

It was super fun to make, and one of the more challenging squares I've made! This photo shows the square unblocked - there's definitely some blocking to come. I'll be writing up a post about that in the future, when we're a few squares in. I didn't use the Scarlet yarn this time, but it will be making an appearance soon enough. The designer of this square, Margaret MacInnis, tells me she's got an extensive photo tutorial coming for this square too, so stay tuned for that. And stay tuned for our next block, which will be announced January 23rd!

😀 I'm sure you'll do fine! I did one of these years ago and was able to make a blanket even with a 1 year old, 2 year old, and 6 year old - the average square takes an hour or two to make, so it's pretty painless. 🙂

I am so excited that I found this email today. I have such big plans. I have never made an afghan before. So this will be a pain-free way to make one or more at one time for my loved ones. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. I can't wait to take on the challenge (for myself). Happy New Year and Blessings, Grace

Do you have any color suggestions to buy yarn, now? (and maybe amount?) I live in NZ and because of so few yarn options, yarn gets snapped up pretty fast and I wont be able to color-match for a whole year.

Color are completely up to you! You can go monochromatic or mix it up. Most afghan blocks use less than 150 yds, if that helps. 🙂

Any idea on how much approximate yarn we will need? And how many total colors? I have some colors in mind, but would like to be careful with dye lots of course, and would like to possibly buy everything at once... Just forgive my "planner" tendencies... This is a big project and I'd love to do it WELL!

The average afghan square uses less than 150 yds of yarn, and we're doing 24 (though you can do more/less if you like). I bought my yarn this afternoon and I got 24 skeins of Vanna's Choice at 170 yds each. I'll likely have a fair bit left over, but I can always find a use for leftovers around here lol.

Last time I did one I did all the squares in white. I just got back from the yarn store and this time I'm doing 4 colors - I'll have to wait til it's light out to take a photo! Some squares will only use some of them though. I'm sure everyone will be super creative and do their own thing too!

Oh my - I am excited. I have my colors picked - peach, mint green, and cream. I will add in pale aqua for any squares that need 4 colors (or maybe for my joining and border). I might do one in black, grey, and ivory as well - we will see. I crochet really fast, but I have 4 works in progress right now that I have to complete before I have surgery on my elbow, which will put me out of commission for about a month. But I know I can catch up in no time. I suggest that people in the US that can get there hands on it use Caron Simply Soft - no dye lots to worry about and most chain stores carry it (Wal-Mart, Michael's, etc), or it is really easy to order from them online. I am not a huge fan of the Simply Soft, but it is much better than most acrylic yarns (not so itchy) and they have a wide range of colors.

It's a great one for afghans! I did a CAL in 2008 using Caron Simply Soft, and it was so nice to be able to buy one or two skeins a month and not worry. Great suggestion!

The only thing with Caron Simply Soft is that it is a "light" worsted, so a noticeable amount thinner than regular worsted yarn. That means the entire project would have to be made with Caron Simply Soft, or the difference in yarn weight would be very obvious. The CSS squares would be smaller than 12x12 due to the thinner yarn.

As this is an afghan, I don't think size will be a problem. I love using Caron's Simply Soft for my projects. It is so soft and holds up really well.

I may use it or Vanna's Choice since I have a bunch of it in many colors in my stash already.

Should be a fun project! Thanks,

            Maria

The average afghan block requires less than 150 yards, and we're doing 24 (if you do them all), so I'd budget about that much, maybe a little more to be sure.

Wow, just looked at the pattern for this square, There are parts of this that I might need help with. I'm still learning different stitches and not sure I completely understand everything, I am going to just make the squares with whatever I have in my stash, so might not match...lol...but that's ok by me because I love different...and boy I think this will be different. Since I can't buy new yarn to make this, I'm glad I like different...

I'm using a hodgepodge of yarn too AND using the wrong weight; but so long as we use the same sort of weight for ALL our future squares I don't think it will matter too much. Besides, this is a great way to stash bust. 🙂

I'm so excited to do this too! I'm not a complete novice, and usually have no problems with following patterns, but I also am having difficulty with rounds 10 and 11. Hope the tutorial comes out soon so I can see my errors. Happy New Year to you and to everyone here!

As soon as you posted this I saw it! I love this pattern, but not sure if have the time right now. Anyways I thought you would like to know I did a shout out about this on ravelry. I'm apart of a group called 52in52-2014!
      http://www.ravelry.com/groups/52-in-52-2014
I started a granny square cal on there and suggested if anyone needed ideas, they could most certainly look on your blog as you are doing cal right now. As for me I am making one giant granny square for this cal, if anyone wants to join my granny square cal and share their pics of their finished squares please come on in, we're friendly.
I may join in later, but for now, everyone have fun!

I have been crocheting for 30 years, but this is my first Crochet-a-Long and my first afghan. I have never been able to actually complete an afghan because I get bored with the repetition, but this one will be fun! I already have my color scheme picked out! Thanks so much for hosting this!

Thank you for hosting this CAL - not that I need to join another CAL! I'm sort of addicted to them! I also love Margaret's designs!

Just my opinion, but to those worried about dye lots, unless the color difference is REALLY noticeable, having different dye lots in the same afghan should not be a huge problem as long as the colors don't touch each other. For example on different squares different dye lots shouldn't be an issue. If you are using a single color to border your squares, then you should have the same dye lot.

Also, have fun! Play with color! You don't HAVE to follow the color placement as suggested in the pattern. I've seen several squares that were designed with multiple colors done in a single color and the designer comments how much she likes it in the single color. I'm in a CAL right now and on a particular square the designer is suggesting we continue the color from the first round into the second round because it looks better - someone else had made the square that way and she (the designer) really liked it that way.

ONE QUESTION & ONE COMMENT/SUGGESTION, T. - THIS PATTERN CALLS FOR BOTH H & I HOOKS, AND YOUR BLOG SAYS THE AFGHAN WILL BE WORKED WITH AN I/5.5MM HOOK. SHOULD WE USE THE I HOOK REGARDLESS OF WHAT THIS & FUTURE PATTERNS SAY, OR SHOULD WE KEEP WITH WHAT THE PATTERNS DIRECT US TO DO?

COMMENT//SUGGESTION: i FIND THAT MANY OF MY QUESTIONS ARE USUALLY ANSWER WHEN i READ THROUGH THE COMMENTS, SO I DON'T HAVE TO ASK. WOULD IT MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER AT ALL TO DIRECT PEOPLE IN YOUR ORIGINAL BLOG POST TO READ THROUGH COMMENTS TO SEE ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS AND ALSO OTHER PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCES? TO ME THIS IS NATURAL TO DO, BUT OTHERS MIGHT NOT THINK TO DO THIS.

P.S. - I DON'T KNOW HOW TO 'USE" RAVELRY WELL YET, BUT I FAVORITED THE PATTERN THERE AND TAGGED IT WITH MOOGLY, AND PLAN TO DO IT WITH EACH SQUARE THAT COMES UP. I'M SURE WE CAN ALL FIGURE OUT A WAY TO CONNECT THERE SOMEHOW. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!! 🙂

For the hooks, they'll all call for an I hook, but not necessarily an I hook exclusively. 😉 For me, this pattern worked best using an I hook for the whole thing, but everyone should adjust for their own gauge.

I'm almost done, but am struggling with RND 17. From the pattern, it sounds like I should be working it in RND 16, but looking at the picture, that's not possible. How did you do it?

Round 17 is worked into 16. If you look at the tutorial photo for Round 16, you'll see the series of loops from underneath. Round 17 is worked into these loops.

The tutorial is now available. If you click on the name of the pattern above, it links you to the Ravelry pattern. When you click on 'Download this pattern' it gives you three options---the tutorial, the UK version, and the regular (American terms) version. The tutorial will need to be downloaded separately from the pattern. For those having trouble with Rnd 10, I suggest you consult the tutorial, which breaks it down into manageable steps.

HELP! I am stuck on Round 14, I just can't make sense of it - it says join yarn in any corner tr, ch4, sk Rnd 12 corner sc, fpsc around next Rnd 12 sc, ch4 - OK so far, but then it says SK NEXT TR and sk 5 dc - well the only trs are at the corners - so where is the TR it's referring to here? The Rnd 13 trs are only in the corners, and there are no trs in Rnd 12. I'm mystified - can anyone help??

Thanks, Tamara - I found it and it did help - I figured out that I was supposed to sc into the MIDDLE tr in the corner and then skip the next one. Very confusing, I think the pattern could be a little clearer. The tutorial is quite detailed at the beginning but then it becomes just notes and they take some figuring out too. Anyway, I've finished it, thank goodness. I'm ready for something a little bit easier!!

Gillian - I'm having a lot of issues with Rnd 14 as well. If you have any tips to share I would certainly appreciate it. I have put it away to take a break (sometimes this helps me), picked it up again and made what I think was my third attempt and something was a muck at the second corner. I have put it away again. LOL. I am just figuring if worse comes to worse I will just go onto the next block and come back to it later.

This is the second cal I have joined in the past few days. Did both squares today. I am using the Caron Simply Soft. To me the yarn is very thin and would rather use Red Heart Super Saver as this is my favorite to work with. Eight years ago when I found out I was going to be a grandma for the firat time I bought a ton of the Caron to make baby blankets. Only got one made. Both afghans will be made in lots of pale colors.

So are the squares going to be 1' by 1' (12" by 12")? I know you wrote that they would be, i just wanted to double check. If they are I think I'm going to make your blocks as well as the blocks on Dedri Uys's CAL at http://www.lookatwhatimade.net.
Do you think that would work? My main goal is to main goal would be to make a bigger blanket, and as an added plus I would be able to make ALL of the pretty squares you have rounded up! Yippy!

I don't have an exact total, but the average square takes 150 yds or less and you'll want more for joining and borders. 🙂 I bought 24 skeins at 170 yds/skein. I'm hoping it's enough but might need some more at the end.

I have been crocheting for years. Have made lots of doilies, hats, sweaters, etc. However on this block I am stumped. I'm not sure of your instructions starting in round nine. How many single crochets should be between the ch 3? Also the parenthesis in round 10 are confusing. I think I will move on to the second block and maybe skip the first one.

It's not my pattern, but the designer has a photo tutorial as a separate download on the Ravelry page that might help!

Hi Tamara, i am sure i read somewhere that it was OK to use the Moogly CAL picture for Ravelry and/or blogs but i can't for the life of me find that information anywhere now so maybe i imagined it! If i load the picture up to my Flickr account and link to it properly (not using your bandwidth) is that an OK thing to do?? I am using it for my projects pages on Ravelry so that i don't have a blank picture before i finish the block 😉

You can do it! Block #2 is significantly quicker than block #1. And, if you have two then you can keep one for yourself, maybe both! (I'd keep the one I like better & give the other one to a relative I'm not that crazy about)! Good luck, & keep us posted!

There's a step by step tutorial that's available as a separate download that might help, as well as lots of tips, tricks, and help on the Ravelry board! If you have a question, odds are someone's already answered it over there. 🙂

I have to admit that I have a hard time sitting down and making an afghan because there is so much time involved, and I find that I quite simply just get bored with it. Doing a CAL like this one makes it so much more enjoyable and actually FUN! Thank you for this fun CAL and for the new afghan I will have at the end of the year!!!!

Hi, just found you yesterday and am going to do this no matter how late--ha.

My big question is how many feet or inches is the finished afghan and, more important, how many skeins of yarn--yardage, etc. I see info on what colors people chose but not yardage.

      Thanks!

Hi Judith, and Yay! 😀 The finished afghan should be approximately 4'x 6' - a bit more with the joining and borders! I don't have a total yardage - I'm making it right along with everyone else, and the borders and joining methods will be "crocheter's choice" so that will alter things a bit for everybody. However, the "average" 12" block takes 150 yds or so, so I'd budget around 4000 yds total.

I finally started the CAL and thought "oh I will whip these right out and have them done in no time". WRONG! Apparently I am not as good a crocheter as I thought I was. This first one is a little harder than anticipated. I am not saying I am a good crocheter, but I can generally read a pattern. This one, for me, is HARD! Idk what it is but I am having difficulties with it. 🙁 My sister is coming tonight for a visit, I am going to have her help me figure it out. LOL Thanks so much for sharing all of them. I am going to work diligently on them.

Thanks for the encouragement. It is a BEAR! I am stuck on round 10. My sister helped me a lot as she read a step and we discussed how it was to be done and so on. LOL Unfortunately, she had to go home and I am now dealing with Rnd 10 on my own. I am going to look at the tutorial in color and see if I can get it figured out.

I love this CAL, but why do you make it so hard to find the pattern on your web site? I eventually find it after searching, searching, searchin on both moogly and Ravelry. I just wish I could go there and click on it.

So, I'm a little late to the party, but I can't say no to a Crochet-Along! I do have a question: how many skeins of yarn do you think would be necessary for this whole project?
