Print That Pattern! How to Use the Print Friendly Button

April 22, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 47 Comments

Almost every day I have someone ask me how to print the patterns that are here on Moogly. Using cut and paste can work, or trying to print the screen - but that can grab ads, comments, and all kinds of stuff that will waste paper and ink. There's a much simpler option - and it allows you to download them as PDFs too! It's the Print Friendly button, and here's how to use it.

    Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch

April 10, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 75 Comments

    BonBon Kisses Crochet Pouch

I've always wanted to give Lion Brand's Bonbons yarn packs a try. They're just so cute, with all the tiny colorful skeins of yarn! And I finally merged that idea, with my idea for a colorful little pouch with one of a "kiss clasp" metal frame. And the Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch was born!

Pick Your Favorite Flavor - I Mean, Colors!

Lion Brand Yarn Bonbons come in lots of colors and styles, but I used the "Brights" pack, which has Light weight skeins - yarn symbol "3." Other packs have different weight yarns, so be sure to check the back of the bag! I used less than half of each skein, so you could easily make 2 Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouches out of the one pack of yarns!

Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch! Free #crochet pattern from Mooglyblog.com

I purchased the frame at my local JoAnn Fabrics store (now closed, alas). I also found a gorgeous one on Amazon, linked below! They're sold in lots of craft stores too, so look for one that's approximately 3.3 inches to make your own Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch. And don't forget to Pin the image below!

    Crochet Abbreviations

    FSC - foundation single crochet

    BLO/FLO - back/front loop only

    Sc2tog - sc decrease

    NOTES:

This pattern switches back and forth between Rows and Rounds - this helps to indicate when you'll turn, and when you will join and continue working in the same direction. However, there are some sneaky turns in there to make the ruffles, so pay close attention - at that point you'll be working from the inside of the bag! Only turn when it says turn. Also, I suggest you weave in your ends as you go - it'll get real tricky if you leave them for last.

    Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch Instructions

Rows 2 - 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (16 sts)

Ch 1, sc in each st across, spin work clockwise and work 4 sc along the side, spin clockwise  again and work a sc in the bottom of each fsc, spin once more and work 4 sc along last side. FLAPS: Rows 25 - 39 are repeated on each half of the Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch, creating the flaps that will be sewn into the metal purse frame.

Row 25: With Color E, and working from the RS again, join with a sl st to an unworked loop from Round 22 that is on the right side of one set of 4 shells. Row 33: With Color G, join with a sl st to first unworked loop of Row 30, ch 1, sc in each loop across, turn. (14 sts)

    Rows 34 - 36: Repeat Rows 30 - 32, break CG and finish off (3 shells)

Row 37: With Color H, join with a sl st to second unworked loop of Row 35, sc in same st and next 11 sts, turn. (12 sts)

Rows 38 - 39: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At end of Row 39, break Color H and finish off.

Repeat Rows 25 - 39 on other side before proceeding with the edging.

    EDGING:

Round 1: With Color H, sc all around opening, working a sc2tog over the unworked sts between the flaps (from Round 24) on each side. Join  with a sl st to first sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first sc. Break yarn and finish off.

    BLOCKING:

Get the pouch wet with cool water. Carefully press out excess water with a clean towel, making sure all ruffles are pointing down. Stuff pouch with a plastic bag (a plastic grocery bag works great!) and shape. Let dry.

    SEWING ON THE FRAME:

This was a new one for me, so I had to look up a tutorial! I found a great one at Craft Couture by T.C - very helpful! I used a sparkly metallic thread, but you can use the thread color that works for you! Start in the middle, and stretch the flaps a bit to fill the frame as you sew them in.

    BonBon Kisses Crochet Pouch

And that's all there is to it! I hope you've enjoyed the pattern for the Bonbon Kisses Crochet Pouch - it was a lot of fun to make, and it's perfect on it's own or stuffed with little goodies. Have a great day!

Chainless stitches are a fabulous option to replace the chain 3 or 4 that is usually used when starting a new row! The Chainless Starting Double Crochet tutorial demonstrated how to replace double crochets with a chainless version, and I've also demonstrated how to use the Chainless Starting Double Crochet in the Round and in the Magic Ring (click any of those to view their tutorials). But I got lots of questions on how to do it treble style! So here's how to crochet the Chainless Starting Treble Crochet stitch.

Lightweight for Changing Seasons and Warm Climates

The open mesh of this pattern is absolutely perfect for cool spring days and summer nights, when you need a little something - but a regular blanket is way too much. Plus it works up fast fast fast, and uses hardly any yardage compared to similar sized blankets! I made the throw size, and used less than 4 skeins of Red Heart With Love! So with no further ado, here's the Big Bold Chevron Blanket!

The Little Waves Crochet Rug features double thick V stitches and front post stitches to create little waves across the fabric. I used oceanic colors - blues, green, white - to create a rug to go with the raindrop shower curtain (and some other future projects!), but you can make this pattern in any colors you like. And I think it would look fantastic in any room of the house! Remember though, if you're using it on a non-carpeted floor, to use something to make it non-slip. Big Bold Chevron Curtain

March 21, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 143 Comments

Big Bold Chevron Curtain - perfect for any window! Free #crochet pattern from mooglyblog.com

The Big Bold Chevron Curtain pattern almost ended up with the name "Emergency Chevrons," because they were the answer to a little emergency I discovered when we first moved into this house...

The window in the primary bath faces the neighbor's house. And while the bottom half of the window came covered in privacy window film, the top half was clear as can be - and Geoff and I are both significantly taller than the previous owners! Yikes! The Big Bold Chevron Curtain was the answer!

A little bit of stash from leftover projects was all I needed to whip up this lacy chevron curtain - add a tension rod and done! It's nice and open so that the light comes in, but the bold lines obscure the view of any looky-loos.

And I just love the grey and white chevrons! I'm not in love with the green paint color, but we're still unpacking - painting is a bit down on the moving to do list. But this curtain and color scheme will be sure to work well with any future remodeling!

Big Bold Chevron Curtain - perfect for any window! Free #crochet pattern from mooglyblog.com

If you're looking for a longer curtain, it's easy to just keep adding rows in the pattern... all the way to the floor if you like! If your window is a lot wider, make 2 and they'll open like traditional panel curtains. The Big Bold Chevron Curtain is the perfect crochet curtain pattern for the bath, bedroom, kitchen, living room - any room of the house! And I've got some coordinating patterns using this stitch coming soon too! So excited!

10 Free and Beautiful Beret Crochet Patterns

March 17, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 13 Comments

Time for beautiful and free beret #crochet patterns! These 10 free patterns are all ready for Spring - or Autumn! From mooglyblog.com

Berets come and go on the style scene, but they'll always be a great option, and fun to crochet! Here are 10 free beret crochet patterns to inspire you!

    A Traditional Style

Berets are traditionally soft, flat caps with a wide round top and a tight brim... a lot like slouch hats, but the shape comes from the diameter of the crown instead of the length worked evenly.

And beret crochet patterns seem particularly well suited to Spring - a little jaunty, a little lighthearted, still cozy but not so warm as a winter beanie. So as the sun starts shining and temps start rising, here are some freebies I think you'll love!

    Loopy Love Hat

March 14, 2014 by Tamara Kelly 63 Comments

Now there's a Loopy Love Hat! Get the free #crochet pattern for the hat in 5 sizes - and the blanket in 7 sizes! From mooglyblog.com

The Loopy Love Blanket was last week's free crochet pattern, and it includes 7 sizes. This week I'm sharing the Loopy Love Hat, which comes in 5 sizes to fit newborns to adults!

    Make It a Set!

The Loopy Love Hat uses the same stitches as the Loopy Love Blanket, but working in the round without turning - this creates a lovely swirling effect! If you prefer a more exact match then you can turn after joining every round. After making the baby size blanket I had more than enough to make the baby/toddler size hat (though it was cutting it close on the color I used for the blanket edging). So there should be enough left over to make the smaller newborn size hat as well.

You might be able to squeak out the child size with the leftovers too, as long as you use the blanket edging color as the least used color in the hat. If you've got the yardage to spare and prefer a slouchier hat, just add more rows in the section where you're working evenly!

Loopy Love Blanket - a free #crochet pattern in a variety of sizes!

The Loopy Love Blanket is so fun to make! The pattern is easy to memorize, the stitches just fly by, and the end result looks way more complicated than it should. And in 3 colors, you can change colors every row and never have to cut the yarn!

    Choose Your Size!

I made this pattern in the baby size, and that's how the pattern is written out. But I've listed several other common sizes for you to choose from - the only differences are the number of starting chains and the number of loops in each row! (And of course how much yarn it takes.) This stitch pattern is so fun, I have other projects in mind for it too!

Row 2: With Color B, ch 3 (or CSDC), sc in the next ch-3 loop, *ch 3, dc in the same ch-3 loop, sc in the next ch-3 loop. Repeat from * to end, finishing last repeat with a ch 2, dc in the last sc, turn. (39 ch-3 loops, 1 ch-2 loop)

Row 3: With Color C, ch 1, sc in first st, ch 3, dc in ch-2 loop, *[sc, ch 3, dc] in next loop. Repeat from * to end, finishing last repeat with a sc in the top of the turning ch (or CSDC), turn. (40 ch-3 loops)

Rows 4 - 78: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, alternating through Colors A, B, and C. Break all yarns and weave in ends.

Edging: With Color of choice (B shown), join to 1st st of last round with a sl st. Ch 1, sc in 1st st, sc 3 in each loop across. Ch 2, sc evenly down the side, being sure to cover floats. Then ch 2, sc across foundation chain, ch 2, sc evenly up the other side, sc 2. Join to first sc with a sl st and fasten off, or use the seamless join to finish.

Easy as can be, and such a great look! I hope you enjoy this free crochet blanket pattern - I can't wait to see the colors you choose!

    One Skein Crochet Pattern

The Splash of Spring Cowl is made with a  yummy hank of worsted weight merino and bamboo blend yarn from Yarn Baby LLC, in the Spring Splash colorway. It's SO soft, and the bamboo gives it gorgeous drape. Variegated yarns like this usually require simpler stitch patterns, and I think I found the perfect one for this lovely one skein project!
