This video tutorial has been a long time coming, as it showcases a technique I used in one of my first crochet patterns! I’ve learned a lot since then – including the need for this tutorial. What I haven’t found is an official name for this technique – so if you know of a “real” name for what I’ve termed the shallow post stitch, please do let me know!

I hope these videos give you a new way to use post stitches – and help you make all sorts of neat crochet projects! The basic idea is that you go around the very top of the post, right under the top “Vs” instead of down lower on the post of the stitch. If you can do one, you can do the other – and try them both to see which look you like best!
Have a great day!

Tamara Kelly
😀 It’s not something I could even find a name for! It gives a neat effect though!

Pat
Thanks Tamara, for including left-handed videos and left-handed written instructions…. I wish more people would include left-handed items. I have learned alot from your works, and I thank you for it.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Pat!
Pauline
Thanks! This is the first I’ve read about this stitch. Years ago when I first discovered post stitches in a mock-Aran sweater pattern, I wondered which part of the post, upper or lower, to wrap around. I consulted other books, this was before the time of Google, and decided they really did mean the lower part of the post. As you pointed out, it’s more textured, but now I’m curious to try the shallow post stitch again. No, I only played a bit with it, never made anything. Good name!
Tamara Kelly
Thanks so much Pauline! It’s hard to talk about things without a name, so hopefully I haven’t stepped on any toes by giving it one! 😀
Trina
Love it Thanks
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Trina!
Frank

Hi Tamara,
I love the look of this shallow post stitch and am working on a baby blanket for my niece. A simple color block to match her nautical theme in her baby room. I wanted one side to have the ridge look with the row of color and the other side to be all flat. So, I am doing the shallow post stitch one direction and a double crochet back the opposite direction. I wondered if in the blanket you show at the beginning of your tutorial if that is what you have done? Thanks in advance for any help!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Tiffanie! That is indeed! It’s actually a cowl, but you can see the free pattern at https://www.mooglyblog.com/grown-cowl/ 🙂
Gaba
Thanks for your explication! I’m a left handed!!
Your web site is wonderful! thanks! Kisses from Argentina

Tamara Kelly
Thank you Gaba! 😀
Magda
Hi!
It’s amazing!
Only one thing. Could you do the gauge in a flat piece? Cause it takes so much time to do 4 rows.
But well, is so nice!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Magda! You can do it in a flat piece, in the round, whatever you like! 🙂
Cathy
Hi Tamara! I’m a huge fan of your work and made the All Grown Up Slouchy Hat last November for myself. My daughter quickly confiscated it and now wants another. I realized my mistake in not using the Shallow Post Stitch right after I finished making it and want to use it this time. I’m having trouble doing 2 in one stitch though. Is there a trick to it? Thank you for your help!
Cathy
I think I have figured it out. My issue is a combination of using black yarn and doing it at night. I’ve done a few of them and have decided to wait for morning. I’m sorry for bothering you.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Cathy! I’m so glad you figured it out – no worries! Working with dark yarn in the evening is tough! I swear by my OttLite for that. 😛 The trick is to make the second one right under the first – but yes, hard to see in the dark!
Maschelle Mashburn
I’ve done these shallow post stitches several times. The patterns have referred to these as “post stitch in the stitch”, it is is exactly what you are calling “shallow post stitches”. The post is seperated by the horizontal bars as you obviously know (Sorry, that was a rather redundant statement). Since we often crochet basic stitches “in the stitch” (right under the top “v”) I think of instructions to” bpdc in the next STITCH” as what you call “shallow post stitch”. When I see “bpdc around the next post” I know I’m to go under the horizontal bars and “go long”. I think you called it deep post stitches?
Chunky yarns give a fabulous effect when back post stitches are worked in the stitch (just under the top “v” and
in-betweem the two top horizontal bars)! I LOVE your patterns! You’ve taught me so many new techniques, and the often accompanying video tutorials are what makes me truly “get it”. Thank you for your time, hard work, and generosity. I am SO grateful!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Maschelle! I’ve not seen it put that way before, but it makes a lot of sense! 🙂
Irene Hendry
Tamara please help! I would like to know how to do the standing up treble stitch. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials.
Irene
Tamara Kelly
Hi Irene! I don’t have a video for that one, but it’s worked the same as the standing double crochet with one change – yarn over one more time before you begin the stitch! Then work the loops off in pairs just as you normally would. 🙂 You can see the standing double crochet at https://www.mooglyblog.com/standing-double-crochet-joining/
Andrea
Is this bpsc?
Tamara Kelly
Yes, but worked higher on the post, right under the top two loops rather than down on the post. 🙂
Sharon Ishika Ghose
I love your tutorials. The “anatomy” of stitches is so appealing. Always very clear. Thank you so much
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much, Sharon!

I cannot find an active link on this page for the video tutorial. I see two lines of underlined text for a right-handed tutorial and a left-handed tutorial, but clicking on that underlined text does nothing. Where are the links to open these videos? Thanks for your help!
Tamara Kelly
The videos are both embedded above, I’m not sure why they aren’t showing up for you – my best guess is that you are running an ad-blocker, which will block some tutorial videos as well. You can also see them on YouTube though: https://youtu.be/kjWHqtpocSM for right-handed and https://youtu.be/slA3BcVMrLw for left-handed
Dottie
If you are working in DC do you just assume the shallow post stitch is done in DC also?
Tamara Kelly
Unless it specifies, I would make dc post sts the standard way, down around the post. But any post stitch could be done just around the top – it’s just not the standard way. 🙂
Dottie
Thanks, the pattern did call for the shallow post stitch it just didn’t specify DC or SC. You might not even do post stitches with single, it’s my first time doing post stitches. I did the double and it seems good. Thanks again for the reply.
Annette
Link for shallow post stitch, right and left handed, do not work
Tamara Kelly
Hi Annette! Do you mean the videos? They seem to be working for me now!

What do I click on to find the pattern?
Tamara Kelly
Whichever pattern you are interested in, you can just click on that name: All Grown Up Hat, Arm Warmers, Ear Warmer 🙂 (In the post – not this comment 😉 )
