    Block #21:

    Rainbow Whoosh Square

    by Mamas2Hands

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 21

Above, you can see the square that Andee made in 8 colors of Berroco Vintage! Below is my CAL square, in my 6 colors of Brava Worsted - Custard, Seashell, Fig, Denim, Espresso, and Cream!

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 21

    Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 21

My Notes: Andee loves a good spiral - and I love making her spiral designs! One requirement: a good supply of stitch markers. Be sure to use them as described - and don't take them out until it's called for! If you are using less than 8 colors, as I did, then you'll need to make a couple of bobbins when making the center spiral (or use the leftover bits from previous skeins). Watch out for some turns starting in Rnd 11!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Butterfly Bobbins, Standing Half Double Crochet, Loose Slip Stitches, 3rd Loop of the Hdc, Treble (tr), Back Loop, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was almost at 12" after Rnd 17, so I skipped Rnds 18 - 20, and worked Rnd 21 in the back loop only.

Everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.

Yarn Options: This year, our designers have chosen from a variety of yarns, including Brava Worsted, Swish Worsted, Jimmy Beans Wool Beanstalk, Berroco Vintage, and MadTosh Vintage. For this square, Andee used Berroco Vintage and I used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Color A: Cream
    Color B:
    Seashell
    Color C:
    Custard
    Color D:
    Fig
    Color E:
    Denim
    Color F:
    Espresso
    Color G:
    Custard
    Color H:
    Denim

This square needed only a little bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking.

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

    Ghost Treat Basket

Make Halloween extra fun with the Ghost Treat Basket crochet pattern, a cute basket shaped like a friendly ghost! This crochet basket is perfect for Halloween candy, treats, Boo Baskets, small toys, yarn, and more. One skein and seamless - and a free pattern here on Moogly!

One Skein - so many Treats!

The Ghost Treat Basket is a one skein pattern, using Bernat Blanket yarn! It works up super fast with this super bulky (6) yarn and a 7mm crochet hook. The only additional supply is the safety eyes - and you can swap them out for embroidered ones if you prefer!

    Ghost Treat Basket - WIP

When made in the same yarn, the Ghost Treat Basket is washable, dryable, and usable year after year!

    Ghost Treat Basket

Why You Should Make the Ghost Treat Basket

The Ghost Treat Basket is ready to bring a little Halloween fun to your home! With its friendly ghost shape and tall, roomy design, it’s perfect for holding candy, treats, toys, yarn, or whatever little things need a spooky-season home.

    Ghost Treat Basket

It’s also a fun way to add some handmade Halloween decor without making something that only has one use. Fill it with candy for trick-or-treaters, use it as a festive centerpiece, or keep it out for storing your spookiest crochet supplies year round!

    Ghost Treat Basket

And of course, it’s just plain fun to crochet! The ghost shape gives this basket plenty of personality, while the simple basket construction makes it a practical project you’ll want to use every fall.

    Ghost Treat Basket

Oh, and did I mention there is NO SEAMING!? The Ghost Treat Basket is made in one continuous piece, all worked from the Right Side, with just 2 ends to weave in when you're done.

    Ghost Treat Basket

The finished basket is double-walled so it's sturdy, strong, and stands up on its own even when totally empty - or upside down! Make one for yourself, or crochet a few to give as Halloween gifts or use as treat baskets for the whole family.

    BLO - Back Loop Only

    Popcorn Stitch

    Seamless Join

    NOTES:

When making this pattern, I decided to try out the "invisible join" that has recently gained popularity.

To do this, you remove the active loop from the hook, insert the hook through the top two loops of the first st of the rnd, reinsert the hook into the active loop, and then pull the active loop backwards through the top of the stitch.

I found that while it didn't have the same look as a standard sl st join, it still created a noticeable seam - just a different one. So use whichever join works best for you!

Rnd 26 creates two little "arms" on the Ghost. If you wish to skip the arms, simply skip the popcorn sts and hdc in each st around instead.

    Special Stitch:

Popcorn - Work 4 dc sts into indicated st, remove hook from active loop, insert hook in first dc made, then back into the active loop, pull active loop through top of first dc.

    Ghost Treat Basket Instructions

Rnd 1 [RS]: Make a magic circle, ch 1, hdc 10 in the ring; join and pull ring closed. (10 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around; join. (20 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st; rep from * around, join. (30 sts)

Rnds 20 - 25: Ch 1, hdc in each st around; join.

Rnd 26: Ch 1, hdc in the next 10 sts, popcorn in the next st, hdc in the next 24 sts, popcorn in the next st, hdc in the last 16 sts; join.

Rnd 27: Ch 1, hdc in each st around; join.

Rnd 28: Ch 1, *hdc in the next st, [hdc in the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st] 5 times; rep from * around, join. (62 sts)

Rnd 29: Ch 1, hdc in each st around; join.

Rnd 30: Ch 1, *[hdc in the next 5 sts, 2 hdc in the next st] 5 times, hdc in the next st; rep from * around, join. (72 sts)

Rnds 31 and 32: Ch 1, hdc in each st around; join.

Rnd 33: Ch 1, hdc in each st around; break yarn and seamless join.

    Ghost Treat Basket

    Finishing and Assembly

Turn the basket Wrong Side out.

    Ghost Treat Basket

Fold the basket over itself at Rnd 19, so that the unused front loops show at the top edge of the basket and the RS of Rnd 33 is on the outside bottom.

    Ghost Treat Basket

Add Safety Eyes: Insert the eyes between Rnds 23 and 24, from the RS. Be sure to add them on the opposite side from the seam, and space them evenly between the Popcorn stitch arms. Only go through one layer of the basket, as seen above. Take a few moments to double-check the spacing of the eyes before adding the backs and making them permanent.

I hope you enjoy creating your own Ghost Treat Basket! If you share on socials, I would love to see it! You can always tag me @mooglyblog!

    A Bit About the Author

Salena Baca, author of Crochet Granny Square Tops, Bags, and More: Review and Giveaway

I first met Salena years ago - was it before her first book? I'm not sure, she's become such a prolific author and designer! Here's her author blurb:

"I learned to crochet at the age of 5 and haven't put my hook down since! I've published over 500 patterns, authored 16 crochet books, taught 2 courses with Craftsy, and launched the American Crochet Association. I currently live in Oregon with my cute family and loud dog."

Let's take a closer look at her newest book!

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

Inside My First Crochet Sweater Collection

"Ready to make a crochet sweater you'll love to wear?

This book will show you how! With simple steps, clear instructions, and tons of encouragement, you'll learn exactly how to crochet sweaters that will fit, flatter, and feel amazing.

    • 5 beautiful designs made for advanced beginner crocheters and up
    • Includes a shrug (S & L), pullover (XS - XXL), no-sew sweater (XS - XXL), and two cardigans (S - XL)
    • Crochet a swatch confidently and learn how to adjust according to your swatch
    • Learn how to measure to fit your body, choose the perfect yarn, and care for your handmade sweater
    • Create a gorgeous handmade gift for friends and family (or just for yourself!)
    • Color photos of each finished piece
    • 8.5 x 11 in (21.6 x 28 cm) pages make it easier to read the clear, written instructions
    • Written and designed by humans, for humans!"

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

I love how Salena's books always get right to the important stuff! And this one includes a great section for anyone making their first sweater - a measuring and fit guide!

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

Another great thing about My First Crochet Sweater Collection is that all 5 of the patterns are show on two models - one an Extra Small, and the other a Large! I love being able to see how they look on different bodies - and how you can pick the size based on the fit you want.

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

The pattern instructions are well written in standard US format, and are very easy to understand. Each one also includes a schematic, so it's easy to see how they come together!

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

These are great patterns for beginner sweater makers, and each uses Yarnspirations yarns, including Red Heart Gemstone, Caron Blossom Cakes, Caron Simply Me, and Caron Simply Soft.

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

One thing to note is the sizing. The first pattern lists only 3 sizes - but take a closer look. The "Large" has a 62" bust! The smallest size has a 50" bust so we know that it's meant to be oversized, but it also has lots of wiggle room. I usually wear an extra large, but I can see that both the medium and large would fit in this one - and I can decide which to make based on the fit I want.

My First Crochet Sweater Collection - Review and Giveaway

Overall My First Crochet Sweater Collection is a fantastic book for anyone who wants to make their first sweater, or anyone just looking for some fast, easy, fun, and fashionable sweaters to crochet! The fit guide is super helpful, and there are some great tips you'll want to read through too.

My Notes: Can you believe we're already in the home stretch?! The Ridgeway Crochet Motif was designed by Robyn Chachula for MarlyBird.com - and it's a lovely and lively design! The pattern is well written, with lots of fun stitches that move quickly. It's super easy to adjust for size too!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, 3rd Loop of the Hdc, Standing Single Crochet, Standing Half Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was almost at 12" after Rnd 16, so I just worked Rnd 17 with single crochet instead of double crochet.

For this square, Ashley and I both used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 - 3: Custard
    Rnd 4:
    Seashell
    Rnds 5 and 6:
    Fig
    Rnds 7 and 8:
    Denim
    Rnds 9 and 10:
    Espresso
    Rnds 11 and 12:
    Seashell
    Rnds 13 and 14:
    Fig
    Rnd 15:
    Denim
    Rnds 16 and 17:
    Cream

This square needed only a little bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking.

A NOTE ON ACCESSING THIS SQUARE:

The Marly Bird site uses something called Grow, which is intended to fight AI scraping. Grow adds a free access step before certain protected content is revealed. There is no charge, and it is not a paid membership.
For the first weekend this square is out, they have temporarily removed the Grow login requirement so everyone can access the pattern without that extra step.
After that, Grow will be turned back on. You can see a full explanation of how it works HERE.

    The Cozy Crochet Blankets Review

    A Bit About the Author

Cozy Crochet Blankets was written by Brooke Curtis!

"Brooke (aka HalfDouble Patterns) is a pattern designer and social media content creator. She lives in the middle of nowhere in Northern England with her beloved cat, Shiny Claws, and rarely leaves the house, which she thinks is wonderful.

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Book Review and Giveaway

    Inside Cozy Crochet Blankets

    "The Softest, Chunkiest Crochet Blankets

Get comfy with 20 beautiful crochet blankets designed by HalfDouble Patterns, the originator of the pom-pom yarn crochet technique. Each blanket pattern showcases a different stitch or technique to create the coziest of crochet textures you just have to touch―soft and squishy pom-poms, 3-D ribbing, braids, and cables, or enormous, oversized versions of classic stitches like giant bobbles and puffs―all with beautiful extra details, like the cleanest straight lines, ombré colors, and reversible sides.

Along with teaching new skills like Tunisian or mosaic crochet, these blankets are designed to be as satisfying to make as they are to use. You’ll love the meditative state that comes with crocheting them―especially when they get big enough to curl up under while you work.

Each pattern is fully explained, so they’re perfect for both beginners building their skills and more experienced crocheters looking for a fresh, inspiring collection of modern patterns. Plus, the patterns are easily customizable so you can personalize your project to your space, from throw size to king size and more. Each project makes a stunning, cozy blanket that’s as enjoyable to crochet as it is to snuggle up in."

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

Cozy Crochet Blankets starts off with a short introductory section, covering skill levels, sizing, yarn choices, and lots of great tips.

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

While the patterns are broken into chapters, they aren't in any particular order - and while the first may be the easiest, Brooke encourages you to jump in anywhere!

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

While specific sizes are given for each blanket and throw, stitch multiple information is also included so you can customize them as needed!

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

Each pattern includes great notes and tips to maximize your success - including closeup photos. A variety of yarns and yarn weights are featured, and substitutions are encouraged!

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

While Brooke is from the UK, all descriptions and abbreviations in this book
use US terminology, rather than British. However, I would not say that most of the instructions are written in the "standard format."

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

Instead, these instructions are written out in a much more simplified format - extremely beginner-friendly! Here's an example pulled right from the book, to give you an idea:

    "Row 6
Sc into each stitch across for a total of 50 stitches. At the end of the row, leave a tail,
cut one strand of yarn and attach color 2 yarn with a knot (change color with one strand only).
    Ch 2 and turn."

So even new crocheters will be able to explore every pattern in this book - though a couple of YouTube tutorials might be needed for new techniques.

Cozy Crochet Blankets - Review and Giveaway

The variety of blankets featured inside Cozy Crochet Blankets is fantastic! Yarn held doubled and thick yarns will make quick work of many of these designs, and each one offers lots of "stop and admire the stitches" moments! I already have my favorite picked - how about you?

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

Meet the September Skies Crochet Cardigan! This easy, beginner-friendly crochet sweater is a lightweight layer with short sleeves and an open stitch pattern across the shoulders for just the right amount of detail - and breathability! Worked in two colors, it’s a simple project that’s perfect for those in-between days - and a free crochet pattern here on Moogly!

    Miss Babs Yarn? Yowza!

Yowza from Miss Babs was my choice for the September Skies Crochet Cardigan. This DK-weight yarn is 100% superwash Merino wool with a smooth hand, making it easy and enjoyable to stitch. The yarn’s smooth texture also works beautifully with the simple stitches throughout the cardigan, letting the color and construction take center stage.

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

Each Yowza skein contains an amazing 560 yards of yarn, so it's perfect for garments - minmizing the need to change skeins and weave in ends. I used the two skeins I had in my stash, but Yowza gives you lots of possibilities for making your own cardigan - in as many colors as you like!

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

Why You Should Make the September Skies Crochet Cardigan

The September Skies Crochet Cardigan is the perfect lightweight layer for those in-between days when summer isn’t quite over, but you’re ready for a little taste of fall. Or winter into spring!

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

With short sleeves and an open stitch pattern across the shoulders, it gives you just enough coverage without feeling heavy or too warm. It’s the kind of cardigan you can throw on over a tank top, tee, or dress whenever you need an extra layer.

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

And if you’re new to crochet garments, this is a great place to start! The construction and stitchwork are simple and approachable, making this an easy, beginner-friendly project you'll love to wear and show off.

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

The openwork at the top is breathable and airy - and also creates "faux sleeves," without any shaping! The colorblocking adds interest, movement, and a long flattering line. It’s a satisfying project that comes together faster than you'd think!

    September Skies Crochet Cardigan

Best of all, you’ll reach for this cardigan well beyond September. The lightweight design makes it useful year-round- whether you’re heading out on a cool evening, layering up for a chilly morning, battling the office AC, or just want a little extra color and coverage in your outfit. Pick your favorite colors and make a September Skies Crochet Cardigan that feels completely your own!

    NOTES:

If you would prefer not to use the FSC stitch, you can instead chain 1 additional stitch, skip the ch closest to the hook, and sc in each rem ch across.

And if you would prefer not to use the CSDC stitch, you can instead ch 3 or use your preferred dc substitute.

When working Row 1 around the Waistband/Collar, I recommend working 2 sl sts in the side of each dc row, and 1 sl st in the side of sc rows.

To make this sweater longer, add an equal number of stitches to the beginning and end of each row. There is no stitch multiple here to worry about, just be sure to move the beginning of the mesh section by the same number of stitches.

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons - Review and Giveaway

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons: Plus 10 Projects to Make Right Away by Juliette Michelet promises to teach you to knit in no time! Take a peek inside, and enter to win your own copy of this beginner-ready book below!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons  Review

    A Bit About the Author

Juliette is a prolific author, but most of her books are in French - as far as I can tell, this is her fourth in English! Here's her author blurb:

"Juliette Michelet is a knitting and embroidery designer, author, textile artist, and author of Embroidery in 10 Lessons."

And that's about all I've been able to find out about her without turning into a stalker...😉 So let's take a closer look at her newest book!

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

Inside Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

"Anyone can learn to knit! The 10 simple lessons and 10 practice projects in this book will have you completing your first knits in no time. Stitches and techniques are explained fully and illustrated by photos so you can easily follow along and practice as you learn.

    Lessons include:
    • Casting on and binding off stitches
    • Knitting and purling
    • Increasing and decreasing
    • Short rows
    • Knitting in the round
    • Picking up stitches

Once you've mastered the basics of knitting, practice with 10 projects in a variety of difficulties: a scarf and headband set, a pair of socks in adult sizes S, M, and L, a cotton cord bag, a raglan sweater in sizes XS - XL, a sweater vest in sizes XS - XL, knit scrunchies, dishcloths, knitted fruit toys, a bobble-stitch pillow, and a tank top in sizes XS - XL.

Written and designed by humans, for humans!"

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

I learned to crochet long before I learned to knit - and in order to learn to knit, I had to rent a "for kids" video from the children's section of the library! So I remember how tricky it can be to get started.

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons is split into two halves. In the first half, there are 10 lessons, walking you through each step in logical order - from cast on to binding off, basic increases and decreases, picking up stitches, and finishing touches.

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

In the second half, we find 5 patterns from Juliette, and 5 patterns contributed by other designers. There is a terrific variety here, from simple dishcloths to socks to tops and accessories.

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

Each pattern is marked with the lessons that are used - so you know up front which skills you need to make it! My only wish is that the text size would be a bit larger - might be showing my own age there though.

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

There are terrific, full color photos in Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons that really take you step by step through both the stitches and the projects. I love that it doesn't only offer dishcloths, but shows that even sweaters can be easy! Is it enough to teach you to knit all by itself?

Learn to Knit in 10 Easy Lessons

That is hard to say - some people need to see videos, others find that photos and words do the trick. But I think that it's a fantastic primer, and includes a lot of important information you might not pick up watching specific stitch videos. And the patterns are lovely - and well worth it on their own!

    Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 19

My Notes: The Dublin Crossroads Square is a lovely example of geometric mosaic design - it's giving me art deco vibes! One of the delightful things about this technique is it's simplicity, and Ashley makes it easy for all skill levels. She's included written instructions, a chart, and a video tutorial!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Back Loop Only, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was almost at 12" after Rnd 17, so I just worked one final round of blo single crochet to finish it off.

For this square, Ashley and I both used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnd 1: Espresso
    All Even Rnds 2 - 16:
    Custard
    Rnds 3 and 5:
    Espresso
    Rnds 7, 9, and 11:
    Denim
    Rnds 13 and 15:
    Fig
    Rnd 17:
    Seashell
    Final Rnd:
    Cream

This square needed only a little bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking.

"Louie (aka Louie’s Loops) is a self-taught professional crocheter based in Southern California who has been designing amigurumi for nearly 20 years, transforming a creative hobby into a full-time career guided by his “three Cs” – Creativity, Community, and Compassion. After launching his YouTube channel LouiesLoops in 2011 to share yarnimations, tutorials, and original stitches, he went on to create Crocheting 101, a free resource for learning crochet. He later founded Club Crochet in 2016, which has grown into a thriving community offering patterns, kits, and live events. Crochet Goomis - Review and Giveaway

The Crochet Goomis patterns are written in US terms, using worsted weight yarn and a US-G/6, 4.0 mm crochet hook. He mentions that he prefers cotton or cotton blends - his own brand, of course.

Crochet Goomis - Review and Giveaway

Looking through the written patterns themselves, they are written in an abbreviated shorthand style, but any non-standard instructions are very well written out and explained. There are tons of close-up assembly photos too, which are a huge help.

    Regency Elegance Cowl

Elegant, timeless, and just a little bit romantic, the Regency Elegance Cowl brings a touch of Jane Austen-inspired charm to your wardrobe. This lighter-weight reworking of my Italian Elegance Cowl is crocheted in DK-weight Elizabeth yarn from Bad Sheep Yarn for a soft, graceful drape. Get the free crochet pattern here on Moogly!

Falling in love with Bad Sheep Yarn Elizabeth

I had the opportunity to meet Marcy, the amazing dyer behind Bad Sheep Yarn, a few years ago. And every time since, she has struck me with her joy, her liveliness, and her love of her craft! And you can see it in her yarns.

    Regency Elegance Cowl

I've been lucky enough to collect a few Bad Sheep Yarn skeins, but when I was looking through my yarn, this Elizabeth DK really jumped out at me! It's inspired by Jane Austen, and is described as "a warm dusty rose variegated colorway that looks like it was picked straight out of a prettyish sort of wilderness. Grey, herb green, gold, dusty rose, and purple color blocks are festooned with heavy plum, peachy pink, and pink-red speckles."

    Regency Elegance Cowl

I had just the one skein, so I knew I had to make something special. And I also knew that one of my old patterns needed a refresh - and it's the perfect one-skein project!

    Regency Elegance Cowl

This was such a lovely yarn to stitch with; I actually found myself sad with how quickly the Regency Elegance Cowl worked up! The Superwash Merino/Nylon blend feels great to the touch and is durable enough for everyday wear. I'm definitely in love with this yarn.

    Regency Elegance Cowl

Why You Should Make the Regency Elegance Cowl

When I designed the Italian Elegance Cowl, I wanted something simple to show off a unique yarn. But of course, that yarn has since been discontinued. And you know me... I always have to be improving things...

    Regency Elegance Cowl

So I started over from the beginning, with a lighter-weight wool-blend yarn. Then I upgraded some of the stitches for better stretch and even better details. The variegated yarn adds color and movement, and the simple pattern lets it shine.

    Regency Elegance Cowl

And now, we have the Regency Elegance Cowl! It's soft, pretty, and just fancy enough to make an ordinary outfit feel special. The delicate texture and graceful drape make it a quick, one-skein luxury piece that combines cozy warmth and elegant lightness, perfect for the transitional seasons.

    Grainline Square

    by KnotBadBritt

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 18

Above, you can see the square that Brittany made in 4 colors of Berroco Vintage! Below is my CAL square, in my 6 colors of Brava Worsted - Custard, Seashell, Fig, Denim, Espresso, and Cream!

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 18

    Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 18

My Notes: The Grainline Square is our first diagonal square of the year! This one leaves the color changes up to you, so you can customize it to fit your blanket. The stitches themselves are simple but interesting, and this block works up quickly. You will want to keep a ruler or measuring tape handy while you work, so you know when to stop (or keep) increasing - see my Sizing notes below!

Sizing: My square was over 11" after Row 19, so I skipped the remaining increasing rows and jumped to the Row 23 decreasing instructions. Then after the Border, I needed just a little bit more to get to 12", so I added one extra round of single crochet.

For this square, Brittany used Berroco Vintage and I used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rows 1 - 9: Espresso
    Rows 10 - 16:
    Denim
    Rows 17 - 21:
    Fig
    Rows 22 - 28:
    Custard
    Rows 29 - 37:
    Seashell
    Border:
    Cream

This square needed only a little bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking.

    A Bit About the Author

Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week was written by Savannah Price and is the perfect follow-up to her previous book, Retro Crochet Style! Savannah is the creator behind Savannah's Stitches.

"Savannah is a crochet designer from Shepherdsville, Kentucky. She picked up a crochet hook for the first time in the summer of 2020, and she hasn’t put it down since. Retro Crochet Style, her first pattern book, was released in 2023 shortly before she graduated from Indiana University Bloomington. She is a lover of old cats, bad reality TV, good movies, dense books, human rights, and chocolate."

"Cute Home Goods Hand-Stitched with Love

Bring a vintage aesthetic to your favorite cozy spot with this collection of stylish crochet throws and pillows. Beginner-friendly, bursting with color, and perfectly capturing nostalgic vibes, these designs are a joy to make. Crochet designer and author Savannah Price uses the trending tapestry crochet method, only single and double crochet stitches, and color charts to craft bold graphic designs that are easy enough to whip up in just one week! A few of Savannah’s charming designs include:

    - Cat Nap Blanket & Pillow
    - Puppy Party Throw & Pillow
    - Daisy Dreams Blanket & Pillow
    - Sicilian Summer Throw & Pillow
    - Squiggle Me This Blanket & Pillow
    - Vine & Shine Throw & Pillow

Each of the 20 designs has instructions for making a blanket and matching throw pillow, for a total of 40 projects. But perhaps the best part is how Savannah shares personal stories about the friends, places, and memories behind each design. So, grab a skein of yarn and your hook―your next favorite project awaits."

Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week - Review and Giveaway Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week - Review and Giveaway

Can you really crochet a blanket in a week? I know I've done it a few times. And I know that a few of those times were right down to the wire - and crocheting is my job! So how does Savannah help us hit that goal? She's assigned each pattern a Level 1 through 3 - so you know if you're slower or a beginner, to start with Level 1.

Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week - Review and Giveaway

There's a bit of build up before the patterns, with lots of great tips and tutorials packed in the first 25 pages. Then, it's on to the 40 fantastic patterns! Now, you might notice some of the image below are a little fuzzy. I had a preview PDF to use for this review, and the images didn't download as well as the rest of the photos. But the paperback should be here soon, and I'll be sure to show it off on the next Moogly Crochet and Catch Up!

    Butterfly Garden

Forty is a lot of patterns for any book, and if you look at the Table of Contents above, you'll only see 20 patterns listed. That's because each blanket pattern includes a matching pillow pattern!

Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week - Review and Giveaway

So that means, each pattern includes gauge swatch instructions, written blanket pattern instructions, written pillow pattern instructions, and colorwork charts!

    Gauge Info

    These instrutions are *complete*!

Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week - Review and Giveaway

The patterns themselves are written for beginners, in a more casual style than the standard. But it's very easy to understand and follow along.

Also helping the speed - all the patterns I checked were made with worsted weight yarn or heavier!

    Puppy Blanket

Savannah's designs are fun, colorful, and nostalgic without being old-fashioned. The patterns look easy to follow, and the range of difficulty means there's something for everyone.

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

August 27, 2026 by Tamara Kelly 4 Comments

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt
Less than one skein, just four rounds, and so many ways to wear it! The Tie One On crochet pattern is a long, lightweight accessory that can be wrapped and tied as a head tie, worn as a skinny scarf, or styled as a belt. It’s a quick crochet project with plenty of possibilities, and the simple design lets the yarn take center stage. I made mine in Universal Yarn Asonde in the gorgeous Heatwave colorway, but this versatile crochet accessory would be stunning in any color.

    Why I Went With Asonde

Universal Yarn Asonde is a luxurious 100% silk yarn with beautiful drape and excellent stitch definition, making it especially well-suited to lightweight accessories like this one. It’s also cool to the touch, which makes it a lovely choice for something you’ll be wearing around your head or neck in particular!

    Universal Yarn Asonde

This is the first time I've used silk yarn, so I did a little bit of research before diving into my single skein. This yarn is spun with the short silk fibers created when silk is combed and carded. This creates a yarn that is lighter drape that other silks, with a more subtle shine. It's also machine washable!

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

So for my first taste of this lovely stuff, I decided on the Tie One On crochet pattern - it uses less than one skein, so you can make this little luxury project quickly and have lots of yarn left over. I used Asonde in 105 Heatwave, and the color gives this simple accessory plenty of personality.

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

After blocking it softened a lot, but there was enough "grip" to the yarn to keep it from trying to slip out of my hair and off my head - which makes it my new favorite head scarf, superior to everything else I've tried!

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

Why You Should Make Tie One On

How many crochet patterns can you make and actually use again and again? Tie One On is small enough to make in an afternoon, uses less than one skein, and gives you multiple accessories in one pattern!

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

Wear it as a crochet head tie, wrap it around your neck as a skinny scarf, or tie it around your waist as a belt.

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

Make one for yourself, then make another in a different color and a different yarn for a completely different look.

Tie One On: Crochet Head Tie, Skinny Scarf, and Belt

It’s a simple, wearable crochet project that proves you don’t need a lot of yarn to make a big impact!

Gauge and Custom Sizing: The stitch multiple for this pattern is 3, +1, plus the turning chain if needed. Each 3 st rep adds .875 inches to the length of the project (blocked).  The length shown is 40 inches, with the Row 1 stitch count given - this version used 90 yards of yarn. No matter how long your first row, as long as you follow the stitch multiple, the instructions will be the same. The width is 2.5 inches.

If you would prefer to avoid using the CSDC stitch, you can instead chain 3 and count that as the first dc of the row, or use another ch-3 substitute.

    Block #17:

    Metaphor Square

    by Pink mambo

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 17

Above, you can see the square that Carolyn made in 5 colors of Berroco Vintage! Below is my CAL square, in my 6 colors of Brava Worsted - Custard, Seashell, Fig, Denim, Espresso, and Cream!

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 17

    Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 17

My Notes: The Metaphor Square takes advantage of the natural tendency for projects worked in flat rounds to skew, in a very clever way! I cannot imagine how much work went into squaring this one up. The stitches themselves are simple, but you'll need to pay close attention to the second half of the instructions. Also, looking closely at the photo helps a lot!

Color choices will have a big impact here, and if I were to do mine over I think I would carry one color through both halves (alternating) to join the first and second sections together. On the other hand, would the center stand out as well? I can't wait to see your versions!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Standing Single Crochet, Standing Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was just over 11" after finishing the pattern, so I added one more round of double crochet, which brought it to 12". As you can see, everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go!

For this square, Carolyn used Berroco Vintage and I used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Color A: Seashell
    Color B:
    Custard
    Color C:
    Denim
    Color D:
    Fig
    Color E:
    Espresso
Last Rnd (plus extra rnd for size):
    Cream

This square needed only a little bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking.

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

    Inside Textured Huggable Amigurumi

"Make your amigurumi friends bigger, fluffier, and even more huggable!

With the textured stitches you'll learn in this book, you can create animals with even more personality and panache! Use twisted stitches to make Sally the Sheep's coiled fleece, crocodile stitches for Flapper the Owl's textured wings, loop stitches for Luke the Llama's fluffy coat, and more! By using bulky weight yarn and larger hooks, these lovable animals work up quickly and sit around 16 inches tall. They're the perfect size to become a child's favorite stuffed friend with plenty of opportunities for creative color choices to personalize each pattern.

Whether you're crocheting a forever friend for yourself, a child, or a new baby, these adorable animals are just right for cuddles!

    • 6 crochet amigurumi animal patterns for big fluffy friends
    • Animals include a sheep, a llama, a penguin, an owl, a hedgehog, and a goat
    • Finished critters sit ~16.5in (42cm) tall
    • Appropriate for advanced beginner crocheters who are ready to work in rounds with amigurumi
    • Learn new techniques with twisted fringe, the crocodile stitch, the loop stitch, and bobble stitches; stitches that aren't normally used in amigurumi but make for a more interesting, textured toy

    • US crochet terminology

    • Written and designed by humans, for humans!"

Textured Huggable Amigurumi - Review and Giveaway

Kristi has been putting out a plethora of big amigurumi patterns lately - and small ones too! In Textured Huggable Amigurumi you'll find her newest collection of 6 animals, each measuring around 16 inches tall, and each featuring textured stitches for a great 3D effect.

Textured Huggable Amigurumi - Review and Giveaway

Sally the Sheep features the Twisted Fringe Single Crochet - I've seen this done as a decorative edge on a blanket, but this is such a clever use of it! Then, with Luke the Llama and Percy the Penguin, you get to try the Loop Stitch.

Textured Huggable Amigurumi - Review and Giveaway

Flapper the Owl uses the Crocodile Stitch as feathers - perfect! And Hatch the Hedgehog features simple chain loops to great effect. Finally, Gus the Goat brings a bunch of bobbles to the party!

Textured Huggable Amigurumi - Review and Giveaway

There is a short stitch guide in the back, but this book is all about the patterns. The instructions are written out in standard US English format, and you'll find some great tips inside as well! I see lots of gifts being made from Textured Huggable Amigurumi!

Honey I’m Comb – Crochet Honeycomb Stitch Square

    by Stitches n Scraps

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 16

Above, you can see the square that Pia made in 3 colors of Brava Worsted! Below is my CAL square, in my 6 colors of Brava Worsted - Custard, Seashell, Fig, Denim, Espresso, and Cream!

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 16

    Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 16

My Notes: The Honey I'm Comb Square is one punny - and fun! This one has a video tutorial, and I do recommend you give it a watch. There are three special stitches used in this pattern, and their placement takes a watchful eye. But the result is worth it! The textured stitch in the center is gorgeous, albeit a bit of a yarn eater. The special cluster on the edging can be a little tricky - I kept dropping one loop off the hook before finishing the stitch. But again, it's a great stitch and one I'm squirreling away in my brain for future projects!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Spike Stitches, Working Into the Edge, Standing Single Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square needed one more repeat for the center to become square. Then, it was only at 11 inches after the first four rounds of the border, so I worked Rnd 5 as hdc instead of sc, and that got me to 12 inches. As you can see, everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go!

For this square, Marie and I used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rows 1 and 2: Espresso
    Rows 3 - 6:
    Denim
    Rows 7 - 10:
    Fig
    Rows 11 - 14:
    Custard
    Rows 15 - 18:
    Seashell
    Rows 19 - 22: Espresso
    Rows 23 - 26: Denim
    Rows 27 - 30: Fig
    Rows 31 - 34: Custard
    Additional Repeat: Seashell
Border Rnds 1 and 2: Cream
    Rnd 3:
    Espresso
    Rnds 4 and 5: Cream

This square needed only a little bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking.

    How to Filet Crochet

July 30, 2026 by Tamara Kelly Leave a Comment

How to Filet Crochet - Moogly

Filet crochet is a technique that uses a simple grid of open and filled mesh squares to create beautiful pictures, patterns, and geometric designs. And it's all done using just chains and double crochets! I'll show you how to filet crochet in right and left-handed video tutorials on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

    Why Try Filet Crochet

Filet crochet is popular because it:

    • Creates elegant, lace-like fabric with minimal stitch variety.
    • Makes it easy to incorporate words, monograms, and pictorial designs.
    • Can be resized by repeating or combining chart sections.
    • Works well with fine crochet thread for heirloom projects or with yarn for modern home décor and accessories.

Essentially, you can think of filet crochet as "drawing with crochet squares." Each open or filled square acts like a pixel, and together they form the finished design. You may already be familiar with this idea from corner-to-corner crochet or other colorwork patterns. But now instead of changing colors, we have open and filled squares!

    How Filet Crochet Patterns Work

After chaining the width of your project and making the first double crochet/turning chain, we work across the squares as follows:

    • Open Mesh/Block: usually two chain stitches followed by a double crochet (or the equivalent in the chosen pattern).
    • Filled Mesh/Block: usually three double crochet stitches (or the equivalent in the chosen pattern).

By following a chart where each square represents either an open or filled mesh, crocheters can create everything from simple borders to intricate scenes, lettering, lace curtains, table runners, blankets, and garments.

Filet crochet patterns are usually shown in a chart, rather than written out in words. The amount of guidance on how to use these charts will depend on the designer, so be sure to read any notes! In general, we work from the bottom of the chart or image to the top. The direction you work may be indicated in the pattern, or it might be up to you, but you'll want to alternate every row - right-to-left followed by left-to-right, etc. If the pattern is symmetrical, like the one shown below (and like the one followed in the video), you won't really need to worry about direction.

    Pine Tree Chart

However, if your design creates an asymmetrical image or words (like the one shown below), you'll want to pay close attention to direction! I recommend checking at the end of each row to make sure you're creating the image desired and haven't accidentally flipped direction - it happens to all of us!

    Deer Chart

I like to think of these charts as buildings with rooms. We need a wall (first double crochet/turning chain) at the beginning of each floor (row), and then we go from room to room (square to square), filling them in or leaving them empty! And at the end of each room, we need that final wall to close it off - and start the next block. At the end of the row, we turn and making the first dc of the next row, and follow the chart back across in the opposite direction.

The simplicity of these designs means it's super easy to create your own charts and images! You can use graph paper, or use a website for creating pixel designs - I like to use Stitch Fiddle! In fact, that is the site I used to design the Mix and Match Holiday Filet Table Runner pattern - free here on Moogly!

    Supplies You'll Need

    To filet crochet, you'll need:

    • A pattern or design to make
    • Yarn or crochet thread - Circulo Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 is shown in the videos below
    • A hook that works with that yarn - Furls Streamline H hook is shown in the videos below
    • Scissors

And that's it! The bar to entry here is very, very low - and every crocheter should be able to pick it up within minutes!

    Final Tips for Filet Crochet

Before you start your next filet crochet project, keep these tips in mind to help your stitches stay neat and your finished piece look its best.

    • Take a look at the chart before you begin. Will direction be an issue? Consider drawing in little arrows to help you as you go!
    • Check your work often. It's much easier to catch mistakes early!
    • Keep your tension as even as possible. Consistent stitch size is the key to crisp, well-defined designs.
    • Don't be afraid to use stitch markers, especially in larger charts. They can help mark repeats, row beginnings, etc.
    • Block your finished project. Filet crochet truly comes to life after blocking. It opens the mesh, evens out the stitches, and helps the design stand out beautifully.

Most importantly, enjoy the process! Filet crochet has a wonderfully relaxing rhythm, allowing you to create complicated designs without complicated stitches!

    NOTES:

This pattern is a "choose your own adventure" pattern where you can choose which images you wish to include, in what order, and how many - creating your own custom table runner! You can make them all face in one direction, or switch halfway through so the images face each end of the table. See the pattern instructions below for more info.

If you would prefer to avoid using the FDC stitch, you can instead chain 54, skip the first 3 chs (counts as first dc) and then dc in each rem ch across. The main goal is to have a Set Up Row of 52 dc stitches, so you can achieve that however you prefer.

Similarly, if you would prefer to avoid using the CSDC stitch, you can instead chain 3 or use a stacked single crochet or whatever double crochet/turning chain substitute you prefer.

    When We're Making Them

    Kick Off

The fun officially begins with our Kick Off Call on August 3 at 11:00 am Central Time. CLICK HERE to register for the free meeting!

During the kickoff, I'll be sharing the inspiration behind these designs, talking about choosing yarn and colors, and walking everyone through how the Make-Along works. It's also a wonderful chance to meet fellow participants, chat about the project you've chosen, and build excitement before we all get stitching!

Now, one thing to know about Moogly stitch-alongs is that it's not a competition! There's no pressure to crochet at anyone else's pace. Everyone works through their project at the speed that fits their own schedule. Some people race to the finish while others enjoy a few rows each evening. Both approaches are absolutely welcome! We'll show off our progress at the end of the Make Along, and cheer on how far each of us has been able to come! ♥

    6 Weeks of Stitching

Over the following six weeks, we'll stay connected through the GoSadi Make-Along group chat! I always love seeing everyone's progress photos, yarn choices, and little victories along the way. Whether you've just finished your first sleeve, figured out a tricky stitch, or simply want to show off the gorgeous color you're using, this is the place to share it.

One of my favorite things about crochet-alongs is watching how the same pattern can look completely different depending on the yarn and colors each person chooses. It's endlessly inspiring, and you might even discover your next favorite color combination from someone else's project!

Of course, it's also a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, encourage fellow crocheters, and enjoy being part of a community that's creating together. Sometimes all it takes is seeing someone else's progress to give you that little extra motivation to pick up your hook for another few rows.

    Wrap Party!

    MooglyCAL2026 Block 15

    Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 15

My Notes: The Clematis Flower Granny Square is such a lovely floral piece with 3D touches that add tons of interest! Simple but colorful stitches frame a 6-petal flower, for an eye-catching result. You can change colors however you like - every one of these is going to be unique! I do recommend using stitch markers to help you keep track of each row. I also recommend moving around to different corners starting in Rnd 10. This pattern is easy to adjust for size, which is a good thing, as I had to skip a few rounds with my own gauge! See more on that in the sizing notes below.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, working in the 3rd loop, standing double crochet, standing single crochet, Tr - Treble Crochet, Back Loop Only, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was already at 11 inches after Rnd 15, so I skipped the rest of the rnds and finished up with a round of hdc worked in the back loop only. That got me right to 12". As you can see, everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go!

For this square, Marie and I used Brava Worsted!

    What I Did:

I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnds 1 and 2: Cream
    Rnd 3 and 4:
    Custard
    Rnds 5 and 6:
    Seashell
    Rnds 7 - 9:
    Fig
    Rnd 10:
    Denim
    Rnd 11:
    Espresso
    Rnd 12:
    Denim
    Rnd 13:
    Custard
    Rnd 14: Denim
    Rnd 15: Espresso
    Last Rnd: BLO hdc, Cream

This square needed a bit of blocking, so I used wet blocking followed by some light steaming.

"Nadia E. Oxford has been writing in, about, and for the games industry since 2004, which is the journalistic equivalent of being raised by wolves. She currently roams around in her half-feral state, consulting on games, localizing scripts, and publishing books to keep body and soul together."

So while I'm not an expert Minecrafter, I can recognize most of what's in this book.

There are 20 total patterns in Minecraft: The Official Crochet Book, with sections on Home Decor, Amigurumi, and Wearables, plus an additional section on how to further customize 5 previous patterns. But there are hundreds if not thousands of ways to make them your own, and some patterns that might even fly under the radar, so only other Minecraft fans will "get it!"

Lee uses motifs and "blocky" stitch patterns to give everything that pixelated look that Minecraft is known for - the waffle stitch, corner-to-corner, and granny squares all make an appearance in here. You'll also get to try techniques like fair isle, tapestry, and Tunisian!

This is a thick, hardcover book that doesn't mess around with a "learn to crochet" section, jumping right into the patterns themselves.

The patterns are written in standard US format for each technique, and the amigurumi patterns are mostly written out fully, rather than abbreviated as some stuffy patterns are in recent books.

The patterns in Minecraft: The Official Crochet Book are adorable, fun, and clever - I particularly love the Sleeping Fox Pillow and Flower Cardigan. My kids would've had a blast with the Diamond Swords... and I'm excited to see what characters get my niece excited to so I can surprise her! If you are or know a Minecraft fan, this book is definitely a must-have!

How to Sew the Blanket Stitch for Crochet Borders and More

Have you ever wanted to add a crochet edging to a dish towel? Or maybe you've admired beautiful crocheted borders on quilts or fleece blankets and wondered how they got there without punching hundreds of holes first. What about those T-shirts with crocheted sleeves and hems? The answer is the blanket stitch! See how to sew the blanket stitch for crochet borders and add-ons in the right and left-handed videos below!

    Why Use the Blanket Stitch

Sewing the blanket stitch into fabric creates a sturdy, evenly spaced foundation that makes adding a crochet border (or more) easy. It's a simple hand-sewing technique that opens up all sorts of possibilities, from baby blankets and tea towels to accessories, wearables, and more. Once you've learned it, you'll find yourself looking at all kinds of fabric with crochet potential - and possibly rethinking your wardrobe!

How to Sew the Blanket Stitch for Crochet Borders and More

Crochet stitches need somewhere to go, and most woven fabrics don't naturally have spaces large enough for a crochet hook. While you can use specialty tools like sharp hooks or a skip blade to make holes, the blanket stitch is one of the easiest and most beginner-friendly methods because it reinforces the edge while creating consistent places to crochet.

    The blanket stitch also:

    • Creates evenly spaced loops for consistent crochet stitches.
    • Reinforces the edge of your fabric to reduce fraying.
    • Works on a wide variety of fabrics, from cotton to fleece.
    • Requires only basic sewing supplies.
    • Gives your finished project a polished, handmade look.

Whether you're making gifts or adding a special touch to something for your own home, it's a technique you'll use again and again.

    Supplies You'll Need

To sew a blanket stitch for crochet borders, you'll need:

    • Fabric or finished fabric project
    • Embroidery floss or crochet thread (the thicker the fabric, the thicker the thread)
    • Sharp hand sewing needle
    • Small scissors
    • Ruler or measuring tape (optional)
    • Washable fabric marker or chalk (optional)

Choose a thread color that either blends into your fabric or complements your planned crochet edging - blend in or add more color; it's up to you!

How to Sew the Blanket Stitch In Words:

Step 1: (Optional) Mark out the spacing of your stitches on your fabric using a fabric marker or chalk. The spacing depends on the weight of your yarn and the crochet border you plan to add. In general, spacing them about ¼ inch apart works well for many worsted weight crochet borders.

Step 2: Cut a length of thread or floss, long enough to complete your project - 3-4 times the length of the border being sewn should be enough. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the opposite end of the thread.

Note: You can start from the left or the right - it's up to you. In the videos above, I worked in the same direction as we typically crochet. To see it worked the other direction, watch the other video!

Step 3: Beginning on the wrong side of the fabric, bring the needle up to the front near the corner (at your first mark), at the depth you want your sewn stitches to be. Then, bringing the thread over the edge, send your needle from back to front through the same spot. Now, send your needle under the front of that stitch, so that it is at the top edge of your fabric. (I like to take a tiny stitch through the edge of the fabric here to really anchor this first stitch down.)

Step 4: Make your next stitch by inserting the needle from back to front a short distance away (at your next mark). As you pull the thread through, send the needle through the loop formed by the stitch, so that it forms a small loop that sits neatly along the edge of the fabric.

Continue making blanket stitches across the edge as in Step 4, keeping both the spacing and stitch depth as consistent as possible. These along-the-top-edge loops will become the places where you'll insert your crochet hook, so taking your time here will make crocheting the border much easier later.

Step 5: After making the last stitch, bring the needle from front to back through the same mark. Secure the thread on the back of the fabric with a small knot and trim the excess.

Final Tips for Using the Blanket Stitch for Crochet Borders or Add-Ons

Like any new technique, blanket stitch gets easier with practice. Here are a few tips to help you get the results you're looking for:

    • Practice on a fabric scrap before working on your finished project.
    • Keep your stitches evenly spaced for the neatest crochet border.
    • Don't pull the thread too tightly, or the fabric edge may pucker.
    • Use enough strands of embroidery floss to create sturdy loops that won't break during crocheting.
    • Plan your stitch spacing to match the stitch pattern you'll be using for your crochet border.
    • For corners, add an extra stitch or two to help the crochet edging turn smoothly.

Remember, your crochet border will hide much of the stitching, so don't worry if your first attempts aren't absolutely perfect. Follow along with the video above as I demonstrate exactly how to sew the blanket stitch, keep your spacing even, and prepare your fabric for a beautiful crochet edging!
