My Notes: This square is crocheted using the overlay mosaic technique, utilizing the front and back loops of stitches to create an overlapping pattern. The trickiest part is the corner - please note that the dc sts "cover up" the first and last sc sts in each trio!
If you plan on breaking the yarn after every round, I recommend joining each new yarn in a different spot around the square. This will prevent the visible seam that can be caused when all the slip stitches are lined up. If you do this, you can join with a standing sc in the back loop of any dc st, and work from there - you'll have this pattern memorized fast. I can't wait to see how you use your color changes!
One of the many great things about this design is that it's super easy to adjust for size - just stop when you hit 12"!
Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Standing sc, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, BLO - Back Loop Only, and seamless join.
Sizing: My gauge for this one just a little big - I got to 12" after 19 Rnds, so I stopped there. But everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.
Yarn Options: This year, our designers have chosen from a variety of yarns, including Brava Worsted, Swish Worsted, Jimmy Beans Wool Beanstalk, Berroco Vintage, and MadTosh Vintage. For this square, both Natalie and I used Brava Worsted!
What I Did:
I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):
Rnds 1 and 2: Seashell
Rnd 3: Custard
Rnd 4: Fig
Rnd 5: Denim
Rnd 6: Espresso
Rnd 7: Cream
Rnd 8: Seashell
Rnd 9: Custard
Rnd 10: Fig
Rnd 11: Denim
Rnd 12: Espresso
Rnd 13: Cream
Rnd 14: Seashell
Rnd 15: Custard
Rnd 16: Fig
Rnd 17: Denim
Rnd 18: Espresso
Rnd 19: Cream
This square didn't really require blocking to square, but I did use a bit of steam to help it lie flatter.
