Block #6:
Woven Checkerboard Square
by MBT Creates

Above, you can see the square that Mary Beth made in 2 colors of Berroco Vintage! Below is my CAL square, in my 6 colors of Brava Worsted - Custard, Seashell, Fig, Denim, Espresso, and Cream!

Details for MooglyCAL2026 Block 6
My Notes: The Woven Checkerboard Square is made with simple stitches - and big impact! Mary Beth has brought weaving to the CAL, and I'm not mad about it! I jumped right in, but I do recommend that those who prefer to plan their color layout sit down with some graph paper. There are so many color possibilities here! This square is easy enough for beginners, but the colors add interest and a challenge for more experienced stitchers!
Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Standing sc, and seamless join.
Sizing: Do not panic! When you make these two halves, before you weave them together, they're going to seem too big! When I made my first row, it was about 12.75" wide - it all looked crazy. But then, I did the weaving and crocheted the border, and it came right to 12"! But everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.
Yarn Options: This year, our designers have chosen from a variety of yarns, including Brava Worsted, Swish Worsted, Jimmy Beans Wool Beanstalk, Berroco Vintage, and MadTosh Vintage. For this square, I used Brava Worsted, and Mary Beth used Berroco Vintage!
What I Did:
I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):
Row 1 and First Strip: Seashell
Second Strip: Custard
Third Strip: Fig
Fourth Strip: Denim
Fifth Strip and Final Row: Espresso
(Both Halves are the Same)
Border: Cream
This square didn't really require much blocking, but I used the wet blocking method to make it perfect!

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. In addition, there are videos linked in the notes for specific stitches and techniques that may help you with the pattern. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

Sandra Silvestri says
Need some help. I am confused because after the fifth strep I am to chain one turn and single crochet across the top but this leaves row five short one row of single crochet. Does that sound correct?
Tamara Kelly says
Hi Sandra! Every strip should have 25 rows before you turn and do the joining row.
