My Notes: The Radiate Champion Block is textured, interesting to crochet, and a lovely addition to our CAL! Linda has put together some unique cluster stitches to create a lovely design in any set of colors. There are a few things to watch out for with this one!
First, take note that you will turn at the end of the Rnd 2 and 3 repeats - it's easy to miss! As you make the tall stitches and cluster stitches, be sure to pull those loops up really high from the stitch below. You will want to keep a measuring tape handy as well - start checking your size around Rnd 12, and adjust as needed from there. I ended up replacing the last 3 rounds of the pattern with 1 round of single crochet. But I hadn't yet gotten my last color in there - so I added a round of surface crochet!
I also didn't want to break the Cream yarn, so I used a trick from one of the 2025 squares and did a chain of 4 to carry it along the back between rounds. Finally, this square does need blocking - it will be a little wonky straight off the hook!

Sizing: My square was turning out quite large, so I skipped Rnds 14 - 16, replacing them with a round of plain sc, and a decorative rnd of surface crochet to get my last color in. But everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.
Yarn Options: This year, our designers have chosen from a variety of yarns, including Brava Worsted, Swish Worsted, Jimmy Beans Wool Beanstalk, Berroco Vintage, and MadTosh Vintage. For this square, I used Brava Worsted, and Linda used Mad Tosh Vintage!
What I Did:
I used a US-J, 6.0 mm crochet hook, and Brava Worsted yarn, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):
Rnd 1: Cream
Rnds 2 and 3: Seashell
Rnd 4: Cream
Rnds 5 and 6: Custard
Rnd 7: Cream
Rnds 8 and 9: Fig
Rnd 10: Cream
Rnds 11 and 12: Denim
Rnd 13: Cream
Rnd 14 (plain sc): Cream
Surface Crochet Rnd: Espresso
This square required a strong blocking so I used the wet blocking method and then steamed it as well.

I need help..im either brain dead or something
..im an experienced crocheted but am completely befuddled by row 2. Can someone help me make sense of the instructions...?its like there 2 times more to do than one row..and is it sc and DC in chain 2s and when 1 left...what is all the rest of the row?
Tamara Kelly says
Hi Meri! I'll try to break it down a bit:
Rnd 2: With B, ssc in any ch-2 sp - this means to work a standing single crochet in any of the ch-2 corners you made in Rnd 1. crochet into the space, not the chains themselves. there is a tutorial for this stitch linked above.
dc in same sp, - double crochet in that same ch-2 sp
{ [sc in next st, dc in next st] across until 1 st rem, sc in last st, (dc, sc, ch 2, sc, dc) in ch-2 sp} rep 3 times, - here you are going to repeat the entire section from { to } 3 times. So you single crochet in the next st, then double crochet in the stich after that, and that leaves you with the 1 st rem, so you sc in that st. That should bring you to the next ch-2 corner, where you (dc, sc, ch 2, sc, dc) all in that ch-2 space. Then begin again from the beginning of this section (the {), twice more.
[sc in next st, dc in next st] across until 1 st rem, sc in last st, (dc, sc, ch 2) in ch-2 sp, join, turn . – now we're finishing up that last side. so we sc in the next st, dc in the next st, and sc in the last st. Then, (dc, sc, ch 2) in the same ch-2 sp that you started in. Join to the standing single crochet with a slip stitch, and turn to work on the other side of the fabric.
7 sts per side, 4 ch-2 sps - this is the final stitch count for the round.
I hope that helps!

You said you used a trick from one of the 2025 squares and did a chain of 4 to carry the cream yarn along the back between rounds. Which 2025 square was that?
Tamara Kelly says
That was Block 22! The designer recommended a long loop, but I subbed in chains. https://www.mooglyblog.com/cal2025-22/
sheri fink says
I have done a carry before for a gift, but will you get tangled in it when using the blanket?
Tamara Kelly says
It just depends how long the carry is - you can also tack the yarn down as you go in other rounds if you like!
Patricia Town says
Is it required to use the suggested yarn? Or is the Red Heart still a choice? If not where can I purchase one of the suggested brands?
Tamara Kelly says
You can use whatever yarn you prefer, but I have the suggested ones above linked - click on the links to go to the yarn! 🙂
