Warm Up America! Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive 2025

August 18, 2025 by Tamara Kelly 2 Comments

Warm Up America! Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive 2025

I'm excited and honored to share that for the second year in a row, I get to share the Warm Up America! Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive here on Moogly!

And now it's finished (for now - keep donating!) - and here is the result!

Warm Up America! received 1,446 winter items for our Moogly and Knit Picks Campaign! This number includes the adult & child hats, scarves, mittens, and headbands they received. They also received many other items that people sent in and put Moogly in the campaign! That is a HUGE number! Thank you all so so so much for sharing your time, yarn, and talents - and sharing the love and warmth this winter! I'll be sure to keep you updated with more opportunities to help in the future!

Warm Up America! is an amazing nonprofit, most known for its afghan drives. But they are just as committed to providing clothing for people in need. This fall, they have once again asked us to help them get out the word about their Hat, Scarf & Mittens Campaign - and of course we said yes! Read on to see how you can help spread the warmth this winter!

Warm Up America! Hats, Scarves, and Mittens Drive 2025

    What Is Warm Up America!?

"The Warm Up America! foundation, a 501C3 nonprofit, was founded in 1991 by Evie Rosen. It is committed to motivating, training and coordinating volunteers to knit and crochet afghans and clothing for people in need. To this end, the foundation:

    1. Promotes, trains and encourages individual volunteers and groups to adopt the WUA! program as a local activity.
    2. Supports and assists these local volunteers by providing information and instructional materials through its website and newsletters.
    3. Acts as a collection point for sections, oversees assembly into completed blankets and ships items to various charitable organizations and agencies for distribution to the homeless and persons in need. "

    What They Are Looking For

The sections get a lot of press, but this drive focuses on wearables - so needed in the coming months! So we're working on them to help get the word out. I've designed a whole new set of crochet patterns for this drive, that are all free here on Moogly - the Olivewood Hat, Olivewood Scarf, and Olivewood Mittens! I used Brava Stripe Worsted from WeCrochet in the Trailhead colorway, which I really enjoyed crocheting with.

    Olivewood Set - WUA 2025

And Knit Picks has more sets to choose from, including knit options! CLICK HERE to check them out!

Of course, you can make any hat, scarf, and mittens patterns you like - and I've got some more great free crochet patterns linked for you below. But here are all the important details!

How Can You Help and Join this Campaign?

The Hat, Scarf & Mittens Campaign will run from August 18 to September 30th - please ensure all your items are in the office by the end of September!
(But if you're late, do still send them in, they always need more!)

    • Make an adult or child hat and/or scarf and/or mittens (Any pattern, not just Moogly patterns!)
    • Scarf size 60"-70" long by 6" wide
    • Use medium weight #4, acrylic yarn
    • Be sure to weave in all your ends!
    • Help spread the word! Share your projects on social media with the #moogly and tag Warm Up America
    • Please include a donation form with "Moogly" on the campaign line! CLICK HERE to get the donation form
    • Mail your items to:
    Warm Up America!
    ATT: Moogly Campaign
    3740 N. Josey Lane Suite 126
    Carrollton, TX 75007

Need More Free Crochet Hat, Scarf, and Mittens Patterns?

Yarn People are the most generous People!

If there is anything I know about people who crochet and knit, it's that their generosity blows me away time and time again. If you can take the time this month to crochet or knit a little warmth for someone else, and send it in - I know there are a whole lot of us that would appreciate it! And of course, when the time is up... keep on sending them in! As they say, winter is coming!

    Featuring Herrschner's Cottage Cotton

I got one skein of this yarn as a sample from Herrschner's, and immediately fell in love with the feel and color. Herrschner's Cottage Cotton has a wonderful feel to it, so smooth, soft, and strong. While I received Tame Teal, there are 20 lovely colors in total. Here's the official website description:

    Cottage Cotton Yarn

"Herrschner's Cottage Cotton yarn is a delightfully soft cotton blend with a color palette inspired by the countryside. This worsted weight yarn takes cotton yarn to the next level by blending cotton with acrylic, giving this easy-care yarn a light, airy feel that is cozy yet breathable. Each ball contains 3.5 ounces (207 yards) of worsted weight yarn in a range of muted pastels. The machine washable cotton/acrylic blend is perfect for home projects, blankets, and fashions."

Bubble Pop Dishcloth - Crochet Pattern on Moogly

Indeed, if I had more of it, it might have ended up becoming a top! But with just one skein, it makes a gorgeous dishcloth or washcloth - it's certainly soft enough for the bath. Small projects like the Bubble Pop Dishcloth are a great way to explore new stitch patterns, and try out new yarnss! So now, it's time to dive into the pattern!

    Block #16:

    Seven Deadly Sines Square

    by The Cocky Crocheter

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 16

Above you can see the square that Kelly made in 2 colors! Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black.

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 16

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 16

My Notes: The Seven Deadly Sines Square is worked in rows, using stitches of varying heights to create this pleasing, undulating design. There is a lot of room here for color play - will you change colors more often? Less often? We're going to see lots of interpretations and I'm looking forward to it! But I do have a couple of important notes on this pattern.

One thing we learn through things like this CAL is that designers each have their own gauge - as do all of you! ♥ Kelly has a particularly tight gauge, so in order to make my square the proper size, I needed to remove an entire stitch repeat - in this pattern, that's 10 stitches. With 31 stitches, my square was just the right size! So I recommend that you be sure to stop and measure your square after Row 2, to see if you need to do the same.

As an experienced crocheter, I also decided to make the first row using foundation stitches, rather than working into a chain. This allowed me to easily adjust the size as described above. You can do the same with the help of this video tutorial - but it's *totally* optional.

Finally, I recommend you use stitch markers in each sc and ttr, and move them up through each row as you work. I makes it a lot easier to keep track of where you are in the pattern!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Tall Stitches, Foundation Single Crochet, Foundation Half Double Crochet, Foundation Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: As mentioned above, I dropped the stitch count down to 31, and with that change the sizing was right at 12". But everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

Setup and Rows 1 -2: Black
    Rows 3 and 4:
    Merlot
    Rows 5 and 6:
    Mallard
    Rows 7 amd 8:
    Black
    Rows 9 and 10:
    Cornsilk
    Rows 11 and 12:
    Boysenberry
    Rows 13 and 14:
    Black
    Border:
    Black

This square required a moderate blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting: Book Review and Giveaway

Amigurumi Critters: 25 Imaginative Crochet Designs for All Skill Levels by Amy Ting promises to help you "Master the basics and gain the confidence to take your crochet to the next level"! Check out my interview with the author, take a peek inside, and then enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Amigurumi Critters Review

    A Bit About the Author:

Amy Ting, author of Amigurumi Critters

Amigurumi Critters is Amy's first book, which debuted on June 17, 2025!

"Amy Ting is a Korean-Taiwanese crochet designer based in the Bay Area, California. With a background in elementary education, teaching and building community are two passions of hers. Amy’s amigurumi creations have resonated with a wide audience, but especially so with the Asian-American population. To name a few of her crocheted food designs, her boba (a milk tea with tapioca pearls), baozi (fluffy steamed bun stuffed with savory pork and chives), and kimbap (a mix of rice, seasoned beef, and veggies wrapped in seaweed) are fan favorites. Amy hopes for those viewing her work to feel empowered through representation and inspired to take on new challenges." (via Amazon.com) You can see more of her work at CuriousPapaya.com!

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

An Interview with Amy Ting, Author of Amigurumi Critters:

I was lucky enough to get to send Amy some questions about her book, and her process, and how she thinks about crochet!

Moogly: You’ve built such an adorable brand with Curious Papaya! Can you tell us how your crochet journey began and how it led to the creation of your first book?

Amy Ting: Thank you! I first picked up a hook in 2018 (so that makes it 7 years now - hard to believe)! Initially, it was meant to be a hobby I could look forward to destress after work. Little did I know, it would soon become my lifelong passion and full-time business.

I dreamt of creating my own crochet book early on and spent the next few years developing a distinct style. When the opportunity to create “Amigurumi Critters” came up, I was sold.

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: I saw that your background is in teaching - how has that experience shaped the way you approach designing patterns and writing instructions?

Amy Ting: My background is in elementary education and I mainly worked with the intermediate grades (power to you fellow teacher/crocheters!). My love for teaching has impacted my design process in every way. Helping my students gain confidence in accomplishing hard things makes me feel like a proud mama! Seeing them reach that “aha” moment in the middle of learning a new skill is so rewarding, and I hope that the folks who try out my patterns experience this too.

Much like writing a lesson plan, clarity and reproducibility in my patterns are top priorities. Of course, adding in tips and tricks is a bonus too! People of all ages learn best when they’re having fun - don’t you think?

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: Can you share one or two favorite designs from the book and what inspired them?

Amy Ting: I’ll put the spotlight on my Capybara pattern! I loved designing his chubby, stout figure. The best part about him is that his yuzu (the little citrus fruit on his head) is magnetic and can be taken on and off. It’s a fun little addition that makes him special.

My capybara design was inspired by my trip to Japan where capybara spas and cafes are all the rage. They are so relaxed and docile - wish I could enjoy their life, ha! A fun fact is that the capybara’s body pattern is also used in Poppy the Pig and Perry the Pug’s patterns.

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: You mention that the book is geared toward intermediate and advanced crocheters. What makes these patterns more complex, and what skills will readers strengthen as they work through them?

Amy Ting: Yesss! I personally felt that there was already a good amount of beginner-oriented tutorials on the market and so I sought to fill the gap of “what’s next”. Though “no-sew” patterns are certainly trending right now with the rise of chenille yarn, I firmly believe that certain details in a design are only achievable with sewing.

This might be a bit controversial but I’ll say it anyway. Wanting immediate, effortless results is posing a huge problem today. Sure, it has its time and place (if only the laundry would magically fold itself, ugh) - but I’d like to nurture the idea of enjoying the process!

Techniques such as shaping body parts (such as the ears on the Finnegan the Fox or creating the eye indentations on Dara the Dolphin) are introduced in the intermediate patterns. These techniques are introduced in bite sized pieces so as to not overwhelm anyone - but of course, improving any skill requires time and practice! And of course, there are still plenty of beginner-friendly patterns in the book (such as Gertrude the Grumpy Chick, Joey the Mallard Duck, and Koa the Koala).

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: Many people are intimidated by shaping and assembly in amigurumi. What tips do you have for someone new to amigurumi?

Amy Ting: One tip I have is… to follow the stitch count and sewing placement guidelines to a tee. Though there’s room for modifications, messing with the numbers is not the place to do it (eek). On my introduction page in the book, I liken making amigurumi to baking. Don’t be surprised if your creation comes out a little wonky if you substitute your sugar for salt. It won’t lose any points for being adorable but… you know what I’m saying.

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: What role has the online maker community played in your journey?

Amy Ting: Absolutely everything. I think that the fiber arts community here on Instagram is truly a unique one. I’m thankful for the friends I’ve met along the way (I probably speak to them more than some friends in real life), and I feel even more motivated to create from the community’s enthusiasm and support.

As with anything online, it’s not always rainbows and butterflies. It can get ugly sometimes with pattern theft or with people instigating drama. However, the pros far outweigh the cons and I choose to surround myself with individuals I look up to and am inspired by.

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: What advice would you give to aspiring designers who want to turn their crochet passion into a business or brand?

Amy Ting: I would say… creating your own website or dropping everything to go “full time” are not the only markers of success, so don’t rush into it. Starting off on well-established websites such as Ribblr or Etsy brings in invaluable traffic if you want to sell patterns.

Growing a “business” and growing an “online presence” are two completely different things. If your only goal is to monetize, chances are, you may burn out and lose your passion in creating.

There’s no one right way to do things - but personally speaking, I started off my IG page to simply share my joy in creating and to connect with others. Doing those two things have not changed since my account had 1 follower til today. I’ll never get sick of chatting with everyone who comments or dm’s me.

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: If you could bring one of your critters to life as a real pet, which one would you choose?

Amy Ting: Oh my goodness, I love this question! Hmm, I’d have to say Gertrude the Grumpy Chick! She’s obviously very important to me (and is even the mascot and logo for curiouspapaya). Gertrude originally debuted in a fun crochet-along some friends and I hosted together back in 2021. I never expected for her to gain the world-wide attention she did with hundreds of people making her.

Gertrude embodies a spunky, hot-tempered personality. Her spicy self isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but she doesn’t give one chicken butt about that - she will always unashamedly be herself. Gertrude is the friend who’s always rooting for you and who is that “YES YOU CAN” voice you need in life.

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

Moogly: For anyone picking up Amigurumi Critters for the first time, what do you hope they feel or experience when they finish their first creation?

Amy Ting: I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again because it’s true - I hope that people feel JOY. Creating something from my book goes beyond just having a physical plushie. It’s the accomplishment of persevering through something that was challenging and coming out on top!

Thank you SO MUCH to Amy for sharing all of your amazing thoughts and expertise with us! And congratulations on your book!

    My Peek Inside Amigurumi Critters

While Amigurumi Critters starts off with introductory sections on tools and techniques, these are geared towards those who know how to crochet already and are interested in adding amigurumi to their skill set. So you'll see tutorials on the whip stitch, emroidering, and working in a spiral - but not on how to single crochet or weave in ends. After that, it's straight into the patterns!

    Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting

The patterns themselves are written in the abbreviated "amigurumi style" crochet notation, rather than standard instructions. But there are also lots of helpful step bu step photos, with great tips sprinkled throughout. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who has the basics of crochet down, and is motivated to learn amigurumi next!

My Experience with Furls Venture Leather Travel Roll Crochet Hook Organizer

I was immediately super impressed with the Venture Leather Travel Roll! I'm not a leather expert, but I do know that this looks and feels like a wonderful item to me. The stiching is perfection - I couldn't find a thread out of place. The feel is soft, warm, strong - even the zipper on the integrated pouch is satisfying!

Inside this Crochet Hook Organizer, you'll find elasticised slots for 7 hooks, and a pouch at the end that's just the right size for a few yarn needles and stitch markers - maybe even a small pair of scissors. The pouch then rolls up and is secured by a long strap. No buttons or snaps, just simple, elegant quality.

Furls Venture Leather Travel Roll Crochet Hook Organizer Giveaway

This pouch is such a joy to use, and every time I do, it feels extra fancy! I might be crocheting in last night's PJs, sitting on the couch, watching terrible television - but I'm living my best crochet life! I brought this pouch with me to the CGOA Chain Space Retreat last weekend, and while it certiainly was impressive, it was also wonderfully useful!

Keep It Simple 12 Inch Square

    by The Stitchin' Mommy

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 15

Above you can see the square that Amy made in 2 colors! Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black.

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 15

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 15

My Notes: The Keep It Simple 12 Inch Square is certainly very simple at first glance. But there are a few little "twists" in there! This square is perfect for our newest crocheters, and an enjoyable evening project for those with more experience. With 2 colors, as written, you can even carry the yarn along the back for minimal ends to weave in!

I did make some changes to Rnd 12 for my square, though. The post stitches in Rounds 6 and 7 were causing a lot of warping in my square, making it look more like an X. I could've redone those stitches, pulling the loops up higher on each, to create taller stitches. However, I decided to adjust the final round a bit instead, and leave more visual "movement" within the square. I used sc stitches in the corners, with hdc stitches in the center of each side. I also skipped a few stitches on each side, and I was able to get a nice square block!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, BLO - Back Loop Only, Standing Double Crochet, Post Stitches, and seamless join.

Sizing: I ended up making some changes to Rnd 12, as described above - that got me to 12".

    Rnds 1 - 2: Black
    Rnd 3: Cornsilk
    Rnd 4:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 5:
    Mallard
    Rnd 6:
    Merlot
    Rnd 7:
    Black
    Rnd 8:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 9:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 10:
    Mallard
    Rnd 11:
    Merlot
    Rnd 12:
    Black

This square required a moderate blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet: Review and Giveaway

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet: 20+ easy amigurumi patterns for scary creatures, cuddly slashers, zombie brides, dangerous dragons, and more! by Donielle Broderick is here to help you create your own "spine-tingling snugglers for any occasion!" Take a peek inside below, and then enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet is Doneille's first book, and it debuts on August 26, 2025 - you get a sneak peek today!

"Donielle Broderick, “Creator of the Cuddly Slashers” and founder of Done by Donielle, is well-known and wildly popular for her amigurumi patterns and dolls, of which she has sold thousands through Etsy and other outlets. Doneille’s work has been covered by numerous major media outlets, though she’s best known for the overwhelming press she received in 2020 when she turned an image of Bernie Sanders sitting cross-legged wearing mittens at the presidential inauguration from a viral internet meme into a crocheted doll and “hot commodity.” Many of Doneille’s followers are celebrities, and she has created commissioned dolls for everyone from Emma Roberts (actress) to Rob Zombie (musician)."

Now let's sneak on in to Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet!

    Inside Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet: 20+ easy amigurumi patterns for scary creatures, cuddly slashers, zombie brides, dangerous dragons, and more! is a small but mighty paperback book with over 170 pages. Measuring just 8" x 8", it's a great size for throwing in your project bag!

"Calling all crafters and horror fans! Amigurumi artist and viral crochet sensation Donielle Broderick is set to debut her first book, Cute ‘N’ Creepy Crochet, hitting shelves on August 26, 2025. This step-by-step guide to spooky amigurumi brings a delightfully eerie twist to one of the craft world’s most popular trends.

Featuring 20 original crochet patterns, Cute ‘N’ Creepy Crochet teaches readers how to create scarily adorable creatures, from cuddly cryptids to sinister slashers and mythical monsters. Each pattern includes detailed, easy-to-follow instructions, vivid step-by-step photography, and special modifications to make the dolls in four different sizes—an innovative feature not found in other amigurumi books.

With a strong online following—over 52K on TikTok and 30K on Instagram—Broderick, known online as “The Creator of the Cuddly Slashers,” has already captured the attention of the crafting and pop culture communities alike. Her work has been commissioned by celebrities including Emma Roberts and Rob Zombie, and she went viral in 2020 for crocheting the famous Bernie Sanders mitten meme into a doll.

With full-color photography throughout, a saturated, eye-catching design, and patterns accessible for both beginners and experienced crocheters, Cute ‘N’ Creepy Crochet is set to be a must-have addition to every crafter’s bookshelf."

    Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet opens up with a section on reading crochet, the tools she uses, basic stitches, and finishing tips. One super important page in here goes over the yarns used. This is because each of the 20+ patterns in this book can be made in 4 sizes, depending on the yarn used!

    Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet

To make her Mini creations 9-11" tall, Donielle recommends a Bulky/5 weight yarn, like Bernat Velvet. For the Medium size, measuring 12-14", she uses Super Bulky/6 yarns like Premier Parfait Chunky. The third size is Large, and these creatures measure 16-18" and call for thicker Super Bulky/6 yarns like Bernat Blanket. Finally, the Jumbo size uses Jumbo/7 weight yarn to make pals that are 20-22" tall - Premier Parfait XL is a great example!

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet: Review and Giveaway

The 20+ designs in this book are broken into 4 sections: Classic Creeps (Franky's Monster, Cozy Mummy, A Very Hairy Werewolf, Brainy Brian the Zombie, and Grim); Folklore Frights (Headless Horsemen, Baba Yaga, Lil Lizzie Borden, Doctor Plague, and Yarn Yeti); Modern Monsters (Classic Alien, The Faceless Man, Count Orlock, Creepy Clown, and Mothman); and Stat Block Scaries (Desi the Dragon, Grinning Gargoyle, Grimacing Goblin, Cuddle Cthulu, Ol' Baphy). The book finishes up with a super handy index, so you can find what you're looking for fast. With all these tips and patterns, there's a lot of good stuff in here!

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet: Review and Giveaway

The patterns here are written in what I call "amigurumi style." Rather than using standard crochet written instructions or charts, this is a much abbreviated style. As such, you need to bring some crochet knowledge with you. For example, one Rnd reads "10sc, dec, 15sc, dec, 3sc" - in standard notation, that would read "Sc in the first 10 sts, sc2tog, sc in the next 15 sts, sc2tog, sc in the last 3 sts."

Cute 'N' Creepy Crochet: Review and Giveaway

While there are a lot of great tips in here for amigurumi, and the patterns include tons of great full-color photos, I would recommend this book for those who have some familiarity with crochet already, and ideally with amigurumi. You need to be familiar with working in spirals, sewing, and following amigurumi-style instructions. It's a gorgeous book, and the patterns look like a lot of fun - you'll make adorably creepy gifts from these patterns, and the book makes a great gift as well!

    Crochet Now Review

    A Bit About the Author

Salena Baca, author of Crochet Granny Square Tops, Bags, and More: Review and Giveaway

Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns is one of Salena's newest books with Stackpole, and it debuted in June of this year. I've had the opportunity to chat with Salena several times over the years, and she is always a delight.

"I learned to crochet at the age of 5 and haven't put my hook down since! I've published over 300 patterns, authored 7 (note from Tamara - it's a lot more than that now!) crochet books, taught 2 courses with Craftsy, and launched the American Crochet Association. I currently live in Oregon with my husband, son, 2 cats and 1 dog."

Now let's dive into Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns!

    Inside Crochet Now

Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns is a lightweight soft cover book with 32 pages. The perfect size for throwing in your project bag!

"If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to crochet but weren’t sure where to start, Crochet Now is here to help! Packed with clear, step-by-step instructions, this covers everything needed to start crocheting beautiful projects with confidence.

Salena Baca, a crochet instructor with years of experience teaching beginners, makes learning crochet simple and fun. She breaks down essential stitches, techniques, and terminology into easy-to-follow steps, with detailed explanations and helpful photos to guide the way.

Crochet Now starts with the essentials, teaching how to hold a hook, manage yarn, and create those first stitches. It covers essentials like understanding crochet terminology, reading patterns, and even stitch diagrams. With straightforward tutorials, practice comes easily as you learn to crochet in rows, tubes, and increasing rounds. Plus, you’ll work through 6 beginner-friendly patterns designed to help build knowledge and skill along the way.

By the time you finish Crochet Now, you’ll have a solid crochet foundation and the confidence to make even more creative projects. So grab some yarn and pick up a hook—it’s time to Crochet Now!"

    Crochet Now by Salena Baca

Crochet Now kicks off with 12 pages of instructions on the crochet basics. This section covers slipknots, how to hold your yarn and hook, and how to chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. There are lots of photos, and each step is shown! There are even instructions on finishing off your project!

    Crochet Now by Salena Baca

The 6 designs in Crochet Now are interspersed throughout the book, along with more crochet basics instructions! Within a section on "How to Understand and Follow Patterns," you'll find a bobble stitch discloth. Then we learn about diagrams, yarn ends, changing colors, and gauge. Just in time to try out working 2 more washcloth patterns and a head wrap!

Crochet Now: A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Stitches and Techniques + 6 Easy Patterns - Review and Giveaway

There is a section on how to crochet in tubes, which includes (very aptly) an infinity scarf pattern!

    Raccoon Squish by Moogly

Made in Quick and Easy Bernat Blanket!

As always, I chose to make the Raccoon Squish with Bernat Blanket, for a super cozy and cuddly masked pal you can whip up in a weekend! As it's a 6-Super Bulky yarn, this pattern creates a 10" toy - a little bigger once it's stuffed! If you'd like to make it smaller - or even bigger - choose whatever yarn you like, and use whatever hook gets you a nice tight fabric. Bernat Maker Minis are a lot of fun for amigurumi!

    Racoon Squish WIP

Cute and Cuddly for Kids and Adults

This crochet raccoon pillow is fun to make - and pet and squeeze! I used safety eyes and a safety nose, but this pattern has not been "tested for safety for children under 3 years of age." If you are crocheting it for a baby or toddler, you may wish to embroider on the features and make sure that the pieces are sewn on quite securely - especially that tail! If using it as a photo prop, be sure not to leave the toy with a baby unattended.

    Block #14:

    Wild Jasmine Square

    by Stitches n Scraps

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 14

Above you can see the square that Pia made in 3 colors, as well as in a solid! Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black.

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 14

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 14

My Notes: Pia has designed a wonderful and unique center-out square featuring the Jasmine stitch, among a bunch of others! I have long admired this stitch, but hadn't gotten to try it out yet, so I was very pleased to see this one. And it was a challenge I enjoyed! The instructions are easy to follow if you read carefully and slowly, and there are lots of charts to help as well.

One tricky stitch to take note of is the 2 Puff Cluster. For this stitch, we are instructed to "hold working yarn with the non-hook hand and pull through all 13 loops on hook". We are then instructed to work back into that bit of loop we've held onto. This is made a LOT easier with a stitch marker! Put a marker around that loop before you pull the yarn through, and it won't be able to slip all the way through the stitch. This makes it a breeze to work back into - and then remove the loop for the next one!

This square is a whole stitch adventure, and you'll learn a lot as you go!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Puff Stitch, BLO - Back Loop Only, CSDC - Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Post Stitches, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was getting a bit big, so to get to 12", I used the alternate Rnd 13 and skipped the border as directed.

    Rnds 1 - 3: Cornsilk
    Rnds 4 - 7:
    Boysenberry
    Rnds 8 - 10:
    Mallard
    Rnds 11 and 12: Merlot
    Alt Rnd 13: Black

This square required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

Knitting Fever Twilight Haze Kit Giveaway

    Knitting Fever Twilight Haze Giveaway

The Twilight Haze Scarf was such a joy to crochet, using Juniper Moon Farm Iris and a lovely pink LYKKE crochet hook! In fact, I loved it so much I reached out to their distributor, Knitting Fever. And they agreed to give away two skeins of Iris and the hook to make the scarf to three very lucky winners on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by Knitting Fever; all opinions are my own.

I got caught in a Twilight Haze...

Earlier this year I was gifted a few skeins of Juniper Moon Farm Iris yarn. Each was gorgeous, but the Romantic Sunset colorway was calling to me! It is light, airy, colorful, and so unique. I sat down with this yarn and a LYKKE Blush 8mm crochet hook - and it's like the Twilight Haze Scarf was hiding inside, just waiting to come out!

    Twilight Haze Scarf

Both the yarn and the hook were a joy to use, and I love the one skein scarf I created. So I reached out to Knitting Fever to see if they would like to giveaway a skein in a Moogly giveaway. But they decided to be extra generous - and giveaway TWO skeins of Juniper Moon Farm Iris yarn in Romantic Sunset PLUS an 8mm LYKKE crochet hook - to 3 lucky winners! So you can make the scarf (twice!) or choose an even larger project!

First, we have a quick look at this yarn and hook, then on to the giveaway itself!

    Twilight Haze Scarf

    Juniper Moon Farm Iris

Juniper Moon Farm Iris is a 4-Medium or worsted wieight yarn, that is made with 70% Suri Alpaca, 20% Mulberry Silk, and 10% Merino Wool. Each skein is 100 grams, and 437 yards! That yardage is about twice what you'd expect for a medium weight skein of 100 grams - which means that anything you make with this yarn will be feather light.

    Juniper Moon Farm Irish

Here is how they describe it on the site: "Iris is something out of a fairytale. A luxurious blend of suri alpaca, mulberry silk, & superfine wool raised ethically in Argentina and designed in Tuscany. The soft hues & bushy texture set the tone for a different kind of garment. Reminiscent of cotton candy with its creamy self-striping colorways. See the Beauty, With Iris."

I was lucky enough to spot a sweater made with this yarn while I was at a trade show earlier this year, and I was even more impressed. This yarn is a little tricky to work with - the fuzz can make it more difficult to see your stitches, and the alpaca makes frogging a little bit trying. But if you take your time with it, it will pay off - a truly unique yarn to add to your collection!

    Juniper Moon Farm Logo

    LYKKE Blush Crochet Hooks

I'm only just getting to know LYKKE Crochet Hooks, but I'm liking what I've seen so far! This is the first project I've made using one of their hooks, and it was lovely to use. The wood is super smooth, and the long straight shaft makes it easy to maintain an even tension - even when working with a special yarn like this one!

    LYKKE Blush Crochet Hook

I love that the size is stamped into metal on the bottom, so I know it won't wear away over time. And the bright pink color isn't just cheerful - it makes it a lot easier to find the hook in my project bag! I really like this message from the LYKKE brand:

"Named after the Norwegian word for happiness, LYKKE Crafts combine high quality materials and thoughtful design to produce beautiful, durable, happy-making knitting needles. Our beautiful needles and hooks are handcrafted and assembled. Our production routines do not rely on mechanized automation. Instead, our products benefit from the skilled and graceful touch of fine local craftspeople. And as global demand is increasing for our products, this community of skilled workers is growing too, expanding our output capacity. We value the opportunity to employ this growing community of skilled craftspeople and happily embrace the natural, human pace of production. As customers of LYKKE Crafts, we thank you too, for your patience and support."

    Twilight Haze Scarf

    Twilight Haze Scarf

The Twilight Haze Scarf is a beautiful and wildly lightweight one-skein scarf pattern by Moogly! Made with Juniper Moon Farm Iris, the shell stitch turns this self-striping yarn into a stunning wrap that’s beginner-friendly. Crochet your own stunning superscarf with the crochet pattern below!

Made in Juniper Moon Farm Iris

I got one skein of this yarn in a goodie bag at Stitch Up Chicago, and as soon as I saw it, I knew exactly the stitch pattern I wanted to use with it. This yarn is super unique - here's the official website description:

"Iris is something out of a fairytale.

    Twilight Haze Scarf

This combination of fibers created a yarn that is hazy, textured, fuzzy - and some of the lightest yarn I've ever used. Just 100 grams holds 437 yards, up to twice what you see in your average worsted weight yarn. So for this pattern I used very nearly the whole skein - it's long, it's wide, and it's unbelievably light and airy!

    Twilight Haze Scarf

    Tips for Using Textured Yarn

This pattern can, of course, be made in any yarn you like! You can sub in another medium-weight yarn, or swap it out for a DK or bulky - it's a scarf, so gauge and size don't matter, as long as it scarfs. Plus you can always add more rows to make it bigger, or stop early to make it shorter!

    Twilight Haze Scarf

But if you do want to use the recommended yarn (and I do recommend it, gorgeous stuff!), there are a few tips to make it a bit easier! See, the trouble with textured yarns like this is that they like to stick to themselves. The "haze" sort of gloms onto the other strands. This can make frogging, or pulling out your stitches, a real challenge. So here are some of my top tips for working with textured yarns like this one:

    • Use a large hook - in this pattern I used an 8mm hook with a medium weight yarn. This creates more space within and between stitches, making it easier to see where you are. It also reduces friction on the yarn and keeps it light and airy.
    • Rely on your sense of touch - don't just look for the spaces and stitches, feel for them as you work!
    • Use a bright light - it's always helpful to be able to see what you're doing.
    • Count often and use stitch markers - if you avoid making mistakes and catch the ones you do make right away, you'll have a lot less frogging to do!
    • Use simple stitch patterns and let the yarn shine - like the shell stitch pattern in the Twilight Haze Scarf!

And now, it's time to dive into the pattern!

Disclaimer: This post may include affiliate links.

It's Time to Try Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian crochet has taken the fiber world by storm, growing in popularity year by year. And it’s easy to see why, especially when it comes to wearables! Combining several unique properties of both knitting and crochet, Tunisian crochet creates a unique, often woven-like texture that’s perfect for garment-making. And as the weather warms up, there's no better time to explore Tunisian crochet tops! Whether you’re looking for breezy summer tanks, layering pieces for year-round wear, or stunning statement sweaters, Tunisian is up to the task.

We've collected some amazing free Tunisian top patterns that will stretch your creativity and skills without stretching your budget. And if you prefer a PDF, I’ve also included some premium paid patterns, with thoughtful design features you’ll love.

These patterns showcase just how versatile Tunisian crochet can be. How to Tunisian Crochet – Beginner Tips and Moogly Tutorials

If you’re new to Tunisian crochet, we've got you covered! Tunisian crochet uses a special hook and a unique technique that’s kind of a cross between knitting and traditional crochet. Once you get the hang of it, it opens up a whole new world of textures and stitches you just can’t get with other methods.

To begin, you’ll need a Tunisian crochet hook. These come in several types: straight, double-ended, or with a flexible cable. For most tops, a cabled hook will work best. From there, you’ll want to start with the basics—like the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) and Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS)—and build your confidence from the ground up.

Here are some helpful tutorials on Moogly to get you started:

July 1, 2025 by Tamara Kelly 30 Comments

What Are Izzy Crochet Hat Templates?

The Izzy Crochet Hat Templates are a set of tools designed to help you size crochet (and knit!) hats accurately and efficiently. These templates were created by a crocheter who wanted to speed up the hat-making process without sacrificing quality or sizing precision.

Each set includes multiple sizes from newborn to adult large, so you can create hats for anyone and everyone! Just hold your project up to the template as you go to check sizing - no measuring tape required, and no second-guessing.

Simply put, they make beanie-making fast, fun, and foolproof—so you can spend less time measuring, and more time stitching.

How To Use the Izzy Crochet Hat Templates

Then, work evenly until you've matched the length of the template. Prefer a slouchy beanie or folded brim? Work a little longer!

Why You'll Love Using These Templates

We’ve all been there: you follow a pattern, check your gauge, and then… the hat comes out too small, or too tall, or it just doesn’t fit right. You can try blocking it or shrinking it in the dryer, or just accept defeat, frog it, and move on. But what if you didn’t have to?

The Izzy Templates give you real-time feedback as you crochet, helping you catch sizing issues before it’s too late. Plus, they’re sturdy, long-lasting, and incredibly easy to use.

Here are just a few ways they make your crochet life easier:

    • Speed up the process: Less measuring = more momentum
    • Design with confidence: Perfect for pattern designers needing consistent results
    • Reduce waste: No more frogging halfway through
    • Make customizations easier: Check your own tweaks and adjustments as you go

Think of them like a trusty ruler, tape measure, and fit model all in one, customized specifically for hats. No matter the season, you'll be glad to have these on hand. One set will last a lifetime - and make a lifetime supply of hats that fit!

My Notes: Marie has designed a beautiful center-out square featuring a lovely variety of stitches! She has included lots of photos to help along the way, and the instructions are easy to follow. There is one thing to take note of! All the rounds are made from the Right Side of the square, *except* for Round 13 - keep an eye out for that one! Overall, this is a fun square you can work up in an evening or two, with lots of color possibilities!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Puff Stitch, Standing Single Crochet, Treble Crochet, BLO - Back Loop Only, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was getting a bit big, so to get to 12" I skipped Rnd 14 and worked Rnd 15 as directed.

    Rnd 1: Cornsilk
    Rnds 2 - 4:
    Mallard
    Rnd 5:
    Boysenberry
    Rnds 6 - 8:
    Merlot
    Rnd 9:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 10:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 11: Boysenberry
    Rnd 12: Mallard
    Rnd 13: Merlot
    Rnd 14: Skipped for size
    Rnd 15: Black

This square required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

Don't get tangled up in your knit and crochet projects - get organized!  Having a lot of WIPs (that's Works In Progress) on the go is one of the most common joys - and struggles - for stitchers. Here is how I stay organized with Project Bags, both at home and on the go.

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

    Sharing My System

Earlier this year, I participated in Craft Organization Camp - and I shared my system for taming multiple works in progress! This is something I've been asked about a lot in the past, and staying organized is one of my passions. So now that a little time has passed, I'm excited to be able to share all my best tips to solve Knit and Crochet Project Chaos! Let's get those WIPs organized with project bags!

What to Keep In Your Project Bag

Each project gets its own bag. When picking out the bag, be sure to consider the size, fabric, and how far/where you plan to carry it. Here are what I consider the basics:

    Yarn with the Yarn Label

Hook or Needle you intend to use

    Instructions or a blank notebook

Any special tools or additions, like buttons, safety eyes, etc.

Room to add the notions bag if possible

This should cover everything you need to make your project, wherever you go!

What to Keep in Your Notions Bag

The Notions Bag is a smaller, usually zipped bag, where you keep all your basic tools. When you keep all of these together, you can quickly transfer your Notions Bag from project bag to project bag. Or for longer trips, bring a bunch of projects and just one notions bag! Here are what I consider the must-haves. While your final list might be different, this is a great place to start.

Stitch Markers appropriate to your craft

Yarn Needles in a variety of sizes

    Scissors or other cutting tool

    Measuring tape

    Gauge Ruler with Hook/Needle Spots

    Pen or Pencil

Other things you might consider keeping in your Notions Bag:

    Cable needles

    Row Counter

Reading glasses (Ok, so for me this is a must!)

Interchangeable or commonly used hook and needle sizes

    Hand lotion and lip balm

Snacks - you know who you are!

Anything else you tend to reach for when stitching

    As Seen in the Video

Most of my supplies have been collected over the years - and many were gifts - but here are a few items you might want to add to your collection!

    Snap Top Mesh Bags

    Storage Bin/Caddy

    Della Q Maker's Mesh Tote

    Erin Lane Bags

Over the Arm Project Bag (similar to what was shown)

    Furls Streamline Resin Hooks

Susan Bates Twist and Lock Interchangeable Hook Set

    Lantern Moon Crochet Hook Set

    Knitter's Pride Interchangeable Needle Set

    Stitch Markers

    Gauge Ruler with Hook/Needle Sizer

The Crafty Carrying Case Free Crochet Pattern

I do keep one handmade item in my Notions Bag at all times - the Crafty Carrying Case! This way, I always have my yarn needles and scissors handy. If I have to go *really* small and compact, then I bring a Lantern Moon Mindy Pouch with just the essentials.

Crafty Carrying Case - make crafting easier by keeping all your tools handy with this free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Don't forget to look around at what you already own!

Most of us already have supplies we can put to use to create our own system for our knit and crochet projects - some in the recycling bin! Most of us need options in a few sizes, so keep an eye out. If you've ever found yourself saying, "but this is such a good bag/box/container," then here is your chance to put them to work!

    Tote bags of all sizes

    Cosmetics pouches

    Gallon baggies

    Shoe boxes

    Small plastic bins and trays

    Small promotional notebooks and notepads

Medicine bottles (for your yarn needles - remove the label first, please!)

    Old wooden trays and crates

    What Works for You?

Keeping my projects sorted into bags, with one primary notions bag, is what works best for me. And I hope that the tips I've shared inspire you to create your own system! We all have different things we consider "essential," so enjoy crafting your own kit, and enjoy your crafting more.

    Made in Worsted Weight Yarn

I'm a big fan of using 100% cotton yarns for anything for the kitchen or bath. They are colorful, washable, durable, and won't melt if you put a hot pan on it accidentally! So for this pattern I would now reach for Lily Sugar'n Cream. But it's a coaster, so really, and worsted or medium weight yarn should work - making this a wonderful stash buster!

Above you can see the square that Pam made in her colors! Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black.

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 12

My Notes: Pam has designed a lovely, center-out design that could read as both floral and geometric, depending on your color choices. There are a variety of stitches for interest and texture, but the last few rounds make it easy to adjust for size. This pattern is a relaxing one to make, with just enough to challenge beginners ready to expand their skills!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Post Stitches, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, BLO - Back Loop Only, Crossed Stitches, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was getting a bit big, so to get to 12" I skipped Rnd 14 and worked Rnd 15 as hdc instead of sc.

    Rnd 1: Cornsilk
    Rnd 2:
    Mallard
    Rnds 3 and 4:
    Merlot
    Rnds 5 and 6:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 7:
    Merlot
    Rnd 8:
    Black
    Rnd 9:
    Merlot
    Rnd 10:
    Cornsilk
    Rnds 11 and 12: Boysenberry
    Rnd 13: Mallard
    Rnd 14: Skipped for size
    Rnd 15: Black

This square required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

    Seaglass Summer Cardi Kit Giveaway

Seaglass Summer Cardi Kit Giveaway on Moogly

Summertime means light layers and fun in the sun - so a Seaglass Summer Cardi Kit Giveaway seems just right! During spring cleaning, I discovered exactly 2 skeins of Red Heart It's A Wrap Rainbow in Seaglass in my stash. So I've decided to pair them with a PDF copy of the Seaglass Summer Cardi, and give them away to one lucky winner, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: This post may include affiliate links; yarn provided by Yarnspirations, shipping provided by Moogly.

    A Lovely Summer Crochet Pattern

Seaglass Summer Cardi - front view 2

The Seaglass Summer Cardi is a simple beach or swimsuit cover-up - that is just as beautiful back on solid land! When I began designing the Seaglass Summer Cardi, I was thinking exclusively in terms of a swimsuit coverup. But by the time it was done, I knew I wanted to wear it everywhere (and you can bet I was NOT modeling it in my swimsuit haha)! It's still great for the pool though - even after I soaked it for blocking, it dried super fast!

Seaglass Summer Cardi - back view 1

The Seaglass Summer Cardi is truly one size fits all. It fits up to a 68" bust - and stretches too! Made with just 2 cakes of Red Heart It's a Wrap Rainbow, it's simple enough to be your first garment if you haven't made one before! Of course, the pattern is free here on Moogly - and as a PDF on Ravelry and Etsy. So I'll be sending a PDF copy to the winner of this giveaway, along with the yarn!

And Two Skeins of Hard-To-Get Yarn!

Seaglass Summer Cardi - supplies needed include 2 cakes of Red Heart It's a Wrap Rainbow and a Clover Amour US-K hook

This pattern can be made with any yarn of the same weight, and I've given a few suggestions on the original pattern. Because Red Heart It's A Wrap Rainbow has been discontinued! (Insert sad trombone noises here.) I did a bit of searching, and found a few skeins on sites like Etsy going for as much as $20 each! So I'm extra happy to be able to send out the last two skeins of Seaglass in my stash to one very lucky winner!

Seaglass Summer Cardi Kit Giveaway Time!

The Seaglass Summer Cardi Kit Giveaway is open to US and Canada addresses only (void where prohibited). The giveaway ends July 15, 2025, at 12:15am Central US time. To enter, use the Rafflecopter form below. If you are on mobile and have difficulty entering, please try the link provided. If that does not work, please use a desktop computer to enter. Only the email option is mandatory – all other tasks are optional, for bonus entries only. If neither the form nor the link below work, the culprit is likely your browser - make sure you are on a standard browser like Chrome or Firefox, not caught within the Facebook browser.

The winner will receive 2 skeins of Red Heart It's A Wrap Rainbow in Seaglass and a PDF copy of the Seaglass Summer Cardi crochet pattern, and will be notified by email.

The Poppyseed Twist Headband is a fast, fun, and fabulously textured knit pattern perfect for any season. Made with soft and stretchy Caron Simply Me yarn, this headband features a simple variation of the seed stitch to create beautiful squishy feeling - with a clever twist design that looks way more complicated than it is - as I demo in this tutorial! Poppyseed Twist Headband - Free Knit Pattern on Moogly

The Poppyseed Headband was one of three designs I created for Stitch Up Chicago 2025! This simple knitted headband or ear warmer features a variation of the seed stitch for amazing texture that’s beginner-friendly. Now I get to share it with everyone - stitch your own quick and easy headband with the knit pattern below!

    Made in Caron Simply Me

To create the Poppyseed Twist Headband, I used Caron Simply Me, which is a bulky weight yarn with 18% wool and lots of warmth. Using only about 50 yards of yarn, you can make several items from one skein, or do some stash busting. This pattern is perfect for craft fairs and stitching ahead of time - small and portable!

    Poppyseed Twist Headband

Featuring beautiful texture created with simple stitches, this headband has just the right amount of stretch and squish to keep you comfy and cute all year long! It probably looks familiar - the Blueberry Twist Headband is the crochet version, designed for the same event! I'm an intermediate knitter, so this is definitely a beginner-friendly pattern!

    Poppyseed Twist Headband

    Make it in ANY Size!

This headband can be made to any size, and the fabric is indeed very stretchy. It's easy to just wrap it around where you want to wear it and see when the size is just right for you! If you don't have the head you're knitting for handy, there are some measurements included in the written pattern below.

Grab your needles, yarn, and stitch your way to effortless style!

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 11

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 11

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 11

My Notes: Jennifer has designed a lovely, center-out, floral square for us. With only 10 rounds, it's a quick square to crochet - and despite how few rounds there are, it's easy to adjust for size! This pattern is super easy to follow, and a great one to relax with over an evening.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Post Stitches, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was over 11" after Rnd 9, so I worked Rnd 10 in single crochet.

    Rnd 1: Cornsilk
    Rnds 2 and 3:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 4:
    Black
    Rnd 5:
    Mallard
    Rnd 6:
    Merlot
    Rnd 7:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 8:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 9:
    Mallard
    Rnd 10:
    Black

This square required a strong blocking, so I used the wet blocking method combined with steaming.
