The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection Review

    A Bit About the Author

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway

Author Dora Ohrenstein is quite literally the first "famous crocheter" I recognized the first time I walked into a crochet conference! She's been designing for years, and her books are a reference for many designers. Here's her author blurb:

"I am the author of 8 crochet books. All of them are meant to elevate your knowledge of the craft and your confidence when tackling projects. Too often, makers move from one pattern to the next without developing a true understanding of the underlying principles and techniques of their chosen craft. It is this deeper knowledge that I aim to provide in my books - the why, not just the how, the history of a technique and how it developed, and the practices that allow you to be ever more creative and free in your crochet journey."

Let's take a closer look at her newest book!

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway

Inside The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection

This book "is pulling back the curtian on how to make stunning Tunisian crochet garments that fit like a glove."

"The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection is more than just a collection of stunning sweater patterns—it's a comprehensive guide to mastering Tunisian crochet and creating beautifully wearable garments. From essential stitches and terminology to choosing the right yarn and maintaining gauge, this book covers all the fundamentals. It also offers expert tips on techniques like increasing and decreasing, sweater construction, perfecting your fit and drape, and giving your piece a professional finish, making it an invaluable resource for both beginners and experienced crocheters alike.

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway
Featuring a diverse range of patterns—from casual tank tops to sophisticated cardigans—Dora Ohrenstein presents flattering designs that cater to an extended size range, ensuring both comfort and style. With this book, you'll explore new yarns and stitches to craft gorgeous, handmade sweaters that you'll cherish and wear season after season.
    "

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection starts off with a short but informative introduction section that will set you up for success. Here you can learn the basics of Tunisian crochet, increasing and decreasing, and all the technical details that set Tunisian apart.

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway

There is also a section on getting the right fit and choosing the size to make - super helpful, especially with closer fits as shown in this book! The finishing section is very in depth and informative for anyone new to garment making.

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway

Finally, we get to the patterns! Here you'll find tanks, vests, pullovers, cardigans, cap sleeve tops, and matching sets. Each is unique, but with basic shapes you'll want to repeat in new colors and yarns for a closet full of options!

The Tunisian Crochet Sweater Collection by Dora Ohrenstein: Review and Giveaway

The only thing I didn't love about this book is the size range. Each of the patterns includes 5 sizes, which roughly correspond to sizes Small, Medium, Large, 1X to 2X. I would've liked to see some larger sizes included. However, the schematics for each design will help more experienced crocheters customize their finished items. It's a lovely collection for anyone who fits that size range!

Formerly part of Stash Busting Quickies!

You may have spotted this pattern before - I originally designed it for one of the Stash Busting Quickies collections I did with Marly Bird! It's been a few years now, and I've decided that it's time to share this pattern here on the blog as well! Plus, it's time for me to make some more - the ones I made before all ran off to my college student's apartment this past fall!

    Farmhouse Bowl Cozy

    Perfect for Winter Holiday Gifts

I know we all get excited about sweater season, but I know I'm not the only one also getting excited for *soup* season! Who doesn't love a delicious soup, stew, or chili when it's chilly outside - the hotter the better. The tricky part is getting it to the table without spilling or burning your fingers!

This simple Farmhouse Bowl Cozy is a great way to keep it all neat and safe! Made in 100% cotton it's microwave safe, so you can keep your fingers unscathed and table safe from white marks at the same time! It's a potholder and placemat in one - and handy in every household. They work up quickly with cheap and cheerful Lily Sugar'n Cream, making them a great stocking stuffer or gift this holiday season!

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 22

My Notes: The Blueberry Pie Granny Square is designed for us by Kim Guzman on Make It Crochet. This is a gorgeous square that looks more complicated than it is. The "pie cuts" in the center features simple stitches with clever construction, with just enough popcorn stitches to mix it up. In order to minimize the ends to weave in, Kim gives the option of pulling up a long loop of the main color along the back. I too hate extra ends, but instead of pulling up a long loop, I added a small section of chains to get me to the indicated stitch - usually just 3 or 4 chains was enough. This really blends in with the other chain spaces that are pushed to the back - easy peasy!

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Standing Double Crochet, Popcorn Stitch, Standing Single Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square came out to size as written. But everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Rnd 1: Boysenberry
    Rnd 2:
    Cornsilk
    Rnds 3 and 4:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 5:
    Mallard
    Rnd 6:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 7:
    Merlot
    Rnd 8:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 9:
    Merlot
    Rnd 10:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 11:
    Black
    Rnd 12:
    Mallard
    Rnd 13:
    Black

This square barely required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

Corner Window Rectangle for Warm Up America!

October 29, 2025 by Tamara Kelly Leave a Comment

Corner Window Rectangle Pattern on Moogly

The Corner Window Rectangle was designed for Warm Up America! This 7” x 9” piece is perfect for their Section Drives. Made with warm and durable Red Heart Super Saver, this corner to corner piece is a great way to give of your time, and use up your yarn odds and ends for a good cause! I'm proud to say that the Corner Window Rectangle is part of the *NEW* Pattern Bundle available on Warm Up America! - and available here for free, so we can get the maximum amount of donations for this fantastic cause!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

    Make A Donation to WUA!

Warm Up America! New Pattern Bundle Available!

If you're not familiar with Warm Up America!, it's a nonprofit organization whose mission is "motivating, training, and coordinating volunteers to knit and crochet afghans and clothing for people in need. To this end, the foundation:

    1. Promotes, trains, and encourages individual volunteers and groups to adopt the WUA! program as a local activity.
    2. Supports and assists these local volunteers by providing information and instructional materials through its website and newsletters."
    3. Acts as a collection point for sections, oversees assembly into completed blankets, and ships items to various charitable organizations and agencies for distribution to the homeless and persons in need.

And there are so many wonderful donations sent in! But that leaves another problem - one of their largest costs is shipping fees. "WUA! is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers around the country creating sections as well as complete afghans. Making sure these items are completed and ultimately delivered into the hands of those in need gets rather expensive." And so, they have put together this pattern bundle - and I'm thrilled to have donated the Corner Window Rectangle to be part of it!

"With every $50 donation or more to WUA! you will receive a curated pattern bundle as a thank you. The pattern bundle includes patterns for blankets, hats, scarves and more. Patterns are emailed out once a week on Mondays to everyone who has made a donation of $50 or more the previous week, so make sure to add your email address when you make your donation!"

CLICK HERE TO MAKE YOUR DONATION AND GET YOUR PATTERN BUNDLE TODAY! There are 60+ patterns in this bundle!

    Warm Up America Pattern Bundle

    Inspired by Opportunity

I've been so lucky to be able to crochet for a living these past 14 years. It's been a lot of hard work and probably even more luck. Opportunities show up at the right time - and sometimes the wrong time. Doors shut, and windows open. This stitch pattern symbolizes this ebb and flow - something all of us can probably identify with. Plus, it's a quick and attractive pattern to use for a blanket! The bright colors of Red Heart Super Saver Pooling remind us to look on the bright side, no matter what!

And while this pattern is part of the bundle you get with a $50 donation, I also want to ensure that it's available for those who would like to crochet for WUA! but may not have the funds to donate - we can all pitch in together, and every bit counts! So you'll also find it for free, below, right here on Moogly. ♥ If you want the PDF, you'll need to buy the bundle! 😉

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

October 28, 2025 by Tamara Kelly 3 Comments

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica is a fabulous new book that features interlocking crochet in sweaters and accessories! With two-sided designs in XS to 5X, you'll want to take a peek inside below, and then enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

    Reversible Crochet Sweaters Review

A Bit About the Author - Our Interview

    Ana-Maria Babanica

Author Ana-Maria Babanica is all about "writing ultra-detailed patterns" and size inclusivity! Here's her author blurb:

"Ana-Maria Babanica is an independent crochet designer and creator of Crochet Highway. She is renowned for her innovative reversible crochet patterns featuring bold, high-contrast color combinations. She lives in Romania." In addition to her site, she runs the Crochet Highway Etsy shop!

I got a chance to ask her a few questions, too! Here's what she had to say:

Moogly: As a designer, creating beautiful wearables is always a challenge, but making them interlocking and reversible is advanced stuff! What first inspired you to explore interlocking crochet for fully reversible garments?

Ana-Maria: I’ve always been fascinated by crochet techniques that let you play with color without the headache of juggling multiple yarn strands at once. For me, the joy of colorwork is in the visual impact, not in babysitting a bunch of tangled yarn balls on the sofa! That’s why techniques like tapestry crochet or intarsia never felt quite right for me, because I find that they demand so much focus on managing your tension on the floats, stitching over inactive yarn, or worrying about the “back side” of the work looking messy. Of course, there’s a time and a place for everything, and if you love those techniques, more power to you! I’d just rather be creating, not untangling. I accidentally discovered interlocking crochet one day and had this total “where have you been all my life?” moment. ONE yarn at a time. Bold, striking colorwork. No floats, no tangles, no headaches. It fit my personal crochet style so perfectly that I immediately started imagining how I could push it further, not just in flat blankets or squares, but in wearable art. And the best part? The fabric is completely reversible. Each side tells its own story, and that’s a dream when you’re thinking about clothing, because you basically get two sweaters in one.

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: Can you tell me more about these seven “mini collections”?

Ana-Maria: Mini collections are my thing! There’s something deeply satisfying about a perfectly coordinated set, and my audience is obsessed with them too. Picture this: You finish a gorgeous sweater (huge accomplishment!), then whip up a matching cowl or mittens using the same colors and pattern. Suddenly you’ve got this killer handmade outfit that no fast fashion brand could ever replicate. It’s like wearing your own personal art collection. Plus, let’s be real, starting with a whole sweater can be intimidating. But a hat? That’s totally doable. These accessories are perfect for testing the waters with interlocking crochet. You learn the technique, build confidence, and end up with something you’ll actually wear. Everyone wins!

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: Why was size-inclusivity (XS to 5X) important to you, and what design challenges did that pose?

Ana-Maria: Because crochet is for EVERY body. Period. Making patterns that only fit a narrow range of sizes? Not interested. My patterns go from XS to at least 5X, plus I throw in customization notes so you can tweak things for YOUR specific body. The math behind size-inclusive designs can sometimes get pretty intense (trust me, there’s a LOT of calculating happening behind the scenes, especially for seamless designs). But when someone messages me saying they finally found a pattern that fits them beautifully? Worth every spreadsheet.

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: Your book includes detailed swatch instructions and photo tutorials. Is that teaching approach reflected in the rest of your work?

Ana-Maria: Absolutely! The patterns in the book are really just building and improving upon the way I’ve always written patterns. I want my instructions to be as clear and as detailed as possible; so, even if the pattern is, say, advanced level, and you know you’re more of an intermediate crocheter, you could still follow them if you’re willing to put in the time, mental effort, and take it slow. And while words are great, sometimes you need to SEE what “yarn over and pull through” actually looks like in that specific moment. That’s why I pack my patterns with photos. Plus, a good photo tutorial speaks all languages, which is super helpful when your patterns reach crocheters around the world!

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: Which mini-collection from the book was the most challenging or creatively rewarding for you—and why?

Ana-Maria: Honestly? I got a kick out of mixing up the construction methods. Drop-shoulders, dolmans, circular yokes, raglans… each one was its own puzzle to solve. I could’ve played it safe and stuck with one formula, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, you get bishop sleeves here, faux i-cord edging there, top-down versus bottom-up sweaters, working both flat and in the round, some clever shaping tricks throughout. Each collection stretched my creativity in a different direction, which kept things exciting for me (and hopefully for you too!).

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: In your experience, what are the biggest challenges for crocheters learning to create advanced reversible and interlocking techniques?

Ana-Maria: The hardest part is unlearning assumptions. Interlocking crochet isn’t mosaic crochet, rather it’s two interwoven layers of mesh fabric, so the stitches interact in a different way. Beginners often trip up by thinking they “know what’s coming” and skipping ahead. My advice? Slow down, trust the pattern, and follow the step-by-step photos religiously, even if you think you’ve got it. The “aha!” moment usually hits when you realize how the layers lock together. Suddenly, the fabric makes sense in your hands. And after that, it’s smooth sailing.

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: What are your top tips for crocheters to get started with reversible designs or interlocking crochet?

Ana-Maria: Here’s the beautiful truth: if you can double crochet and chain, you’re basically ready. No fancy hooks, no special yarn required. Really, it’s that simple! I will say that color contrast is key, though. Pair two highly contrasting yarns so the colorwork pattern pops. I love mixing solids or semi-solids with hand-dyed variegated colorways, but I avoid using two variegated yarns together (trust me, it’s a muddy mess). For practice, I recommend starting small. Like I said before, start with accessories from the book. They’re quick wins that teach you the technique without the commitment of a full sweater. They’re such quick, useful, and confidence-building projects!

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Moogly: Looking ahead, do you have plans for future books or projects building on reversible/interlocking crochet?

Ana-Maria: rubs hands together excitedly My second book manuscript is already in! Can’t spill all the tea yet, but it’s 100% interlocking crochet. There’s so much more coming: new projects, collabs, ideas I’m dying to share. Hit follow on my Instagram and sign up for my newsletter on my website. Trust me, you don’t want to miss what’s brewing!

My Peek Inside Reversible Crochet Sweaters

There are 16 total patterns inside Reversible Crochet Sweaters, but of course, there's an intro section first - and you don't want to skip past it! Interlocking crochet is a unique technique. While the stitches themselves are simple, it's the way that comes together that makes the magic.

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

And it can take a minute to get your head around it. But Ana-Maria has included great tutorials with clear close-up photos, including info on color changes, increases, and decreases. And there's a section on Sweater Construction that's super educational, even beyond this book!

Reversible Crochet Sweaters by Ana-Maria Babanica Review and Giveaway

Of course, turning these patterns into garments is a challenge - and Ana-Maria has done it! Inside Reversible Crochet Sweaters are patterns that will keep you entertained, challenged, and excited. There are tons of high quality photos accompanying each design. There are tips, tricks, and every measurement you could ask for to help you make your own gorgeous pieces!

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

Sometimes I get some great crochet and knit goodies in the mail. And sometimes I get enough to share! For this giveaway, I've put together a fun package of yarn and accessories from Katia! Read on to see what's included, and then enter to win the whole package below!

Disclaimer: This giveaway features items from Katia and shipping by Moogly. This post includes affiliate links.

All the Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies

Katia is a European company that sells to the US and around the world. Here in the US, we can get the yarn at Katia.com, or if you're lucky, a local yarn store near you! However, they have a few fun items you won't find in stores here - making this prize package particularly precious! Of course, I had to include a skein of yarn, too. Here's what is included:

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

    Basic Merino Yarn

I've been crocheting this yarn for a couple of weeks now while stitching up the Katia Flowers Forever Blanket - and it's gorgeous stuff! Super soft, superwash, and super versatile. Basic Merino is a DK weight blend - 52% Wool and 48% Acrylic - and this means it's sturdy and machine washable, with a natural look and feel! This yarn is perfect for making wearables and home decor - just about anything! There are over 30 colors to choose from, but for this giveaway, I'm sharing a ball in Very Light Beige! CLICK HERE to shop for more!

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

    4 In 1 Measuring Pack

This handy wooden set is full of tools to make your crocheting and knitting easier! Inside this set, you'll find a 4"/10cm square gauge, a knitting needle gauge, a crochet hook gauge, and a yarn thickness gauge! This last tool is fantastic to take to the local yarn store, where not every yarn has the weight labeled clearly - you can find out on the spot, no searching needed!

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

    Yarn Holder Bag

Perfect for stitching on the go, this water-resistant mini tote is made of 100% polyester to keep your yarn safe - and it's easy to wipe clean! The sewing job on these is fantastic, with fully enclosed seams on the inside. The attached lid zippers closed and features a grommet to feed your yarn through. The strap across the top is just right for sliding onto your arm, allowing you to walk and stitch at the same time if so talented. It's designed for smaller skeins and cakes - I think 2 balls of Basic Merino would just fit!

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

    Lint Comb

This lovely little tool comes packaged inside a mesh bag to keep all your garments safe on the go. This is a simple but effective piece, with a wooden handle with a lint-grabbing screen on one end. Will you keep it in the yarn room, or put it in your luggage? It's small enough to take it wherever you go!

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

    Knit Cat Stitch Markers

How adorable are these! This sweet little container is filled with cat head-shaped closed-loop stitch markers in 3 sizes. Because they are closed, they are for knitters, not crocheters - but I feel like there are some clever crafty possibilities here!

Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

    Heart Needle Protectors

Learning how to knit can be a challenge - and one of the hardest things is keeping all those loops from falling off the needles! Alas, this danger never really wanes - so these cute little heart-shaped needle protectors are here to help!

And you can win this whole set below!

The Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway

The Katia Crochet and Knit Goodies Giveaway is open to US addresses only. The giveaway ends November 18, 2025, at 12:15am Central US time. To enter, use the Kingsumo form below.

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 21

My Notes: The Retro Ric Rac Afghan Square is designed for us by Andee Graves of Mamas 2 Hands. She has created a timeless square with simple yet varied stitches and great color options. The last few rounds make adjusting for size easy, and the pattern is written to minimize ends. I like the way the pattern turns so that you end up with a nicely squared square! It's an enjoyable square, a relatively quick make, and perfect for all skill levels.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: My square was coming out a little large, so I changed Rnd 15 to single crochet and skipped Rnd 17.

    Rnds 1 and 2: Black
    Rnd 3:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 4:
    Black
    Rnd 5:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 6:
    Black
    Rnd 7:
    Mallard
    Rnd 8:
    Black
    Rnd 9:
    Merlot
    Rnds 10 and 11:
    Black
    Rnd 12:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 13:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 14: Mallard
    Rnd 15: Merlot
    Rnd 16: Black
    Rnd 17: skipped for size

This square barely required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

"Megan Lapp got her BA with a double-major in Art and Music from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and hasn't stopped creating since. Her current work spans many artistic media, including crochet, sculpture, painting, and various fiber arts. She works daily in her studio. Megan lives with her husband, 13 year old son, and 11 year old daughter in Pennsylvania. In her spare time, Megan enjoys singing, playing piano, and doing all the voices when reading to her kids.

Megan won the Makezine Me, My Scarf, and I Singer Contest in 2009 for an original scarf design. Her handmade plushes were a reward for the Kickstarter for Epyllion, A Dragon Epic, in 2015. She was a runner-up in the worldwide Amigurumi Patterns design contest in 2017 for her Original Dragon Pattern design. Megan has been publishing original patterns on Etsy and Ravelry since 2017."

Let's take a closer look at her newest book!

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

Inside Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites

If you are brave, bold, and ready to play, then this book is ready for you!

"Jump into this Cottagecore Collection Full of Snail Steeds and Mushroom Riders!

Mushroom Sprites and Snails are a delightful pairing, offering endless possibilities for crafting magical creatures. With Mushroom Sprites available in various sizes, limb options, and cap styles, and Snails in small, medium, and giant sizes with round or pointed shells, this book provides everything you need to create a whimsical duo. As a bonus, you'll find instructions for leashes, reins, and saddles that allow the Mushroom Sprites to take their Snails on adventures through meadows and forests.

Patterns are accessible for all skill levels, with simpler mushroom shapes for beginners and intricate spiraling shells and colorwork for more advanced crafters. All patterns include detailed photos so you can easily follow the instructions to create enchanting amigurumi. Use the included photo galleries and planning sheets to design your unique creatures and track your progress, and refer to the Glossary of Terms and Stitches for helpful guidance along the way.

You'll soon be enjoying the company of a whole fairy ring of Mushroom Sprites and their Snail companions!"

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

This is a thick book - almost 300 pages long! Megan's books are unique. Rather than sharing a selection of discrete patterns, they are "choose your own adventure" books of amigurumi! And just like any adventurer, you should prepare before you depart - in this case, be sure to read the Introduction! You'll need this roadmap for using the rest of the book.

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

In a nutshell, Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites lets you use Megan's bits and pieces to spark your own imagination! Mix and match the heads, arms, legs, bodies, and caps for the Mushroom Sprites. When you decide to make a Snail, you can pick out the size, body, antennae, and shells. And of course, you always get to pick the colors and yarn textures!

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

There are also a few patterns for accessories - including two different leash styles and lots of saddles!

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

The stitches themselves are all pretty simple, with bobbles being about the most challenging stitch. And there are lots and lots of pictures for each step, and each bit of pattern! This is super helpful, and I'm so impressed with the level of detail and all the photos!

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

The style of pattern writing itself is what I call "amigurumi style," using "Dec" instead of "sc2tog" and other similar shortcuts. So I do recommend that you have some familiarity with the basics of crochet and pattern writing if you'd like to make these amazing creatures! That said, there are tons of helpful hints throughout, making it as easy as it can be!

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites by Megan Lapp

Crochet Snails & Mushroom Sprites is another amazing achievement for Megan. I am in love with this fantastical, magical, yarny world she has created, and this book is a much have to add to the collection!

Fall in Love Again with Caron Cakes - Autumn 2025's Picks!

October 13, 2025 by Tamara Kelly 1 Comment

Fall in Love Again with Caron Cakes - Autumn 2025's Picks!

There's a new crop of Caron Cakes in Michaels stores, and I've got my hands on a precious collection - let's take a closer look at what's out there in Autumn 2025!

Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Yarnspirations. This post may include affiliate links.

    First, the Most Important Facts!

WHERE DO I GET THIS YARN: These Caron Cakes are available exclusively at Michaels - go to Michaels.com to order for pickup or see what's in store near you!

WHAT WILL YOU FIND IN THIS POST: I'm going through the ones I've gotten my hands on, and sharing the details, my opinions, and some pattern ideas to try with each one! Look for all the great links below!

WHAT IF THIS BLOG POST ISN'T ENOUGH?!: Check out my video review below!

    Caron Slice of Anniversary Cake

    Caron Slice of Anniversary Cake

CLICK HERE to order this yarn!

    The Details: 100% Acrylic, 6 - Super Bulky, 8.8oz, 285 yards

My Impressions: This is a great, "bite-sized" version of the popular (and giant) Anniversary cakes! I got a skein of the Prismatic colorway, and it's a super bright and happy one. The yarn itself is made of three relatively loose plies, for a squishy, plush look to your stitches. It's very soft to the touch, without a "plasticy" feel to it. There are solids in this yarn as well as multis. Looking at the pattern included on the label, you can see that the

multis of this yarn have some self-striping to them with a nice repeat. You'll get more of the self-striping effect with knitting, and more of a colorblocked effect with crochet.

    Caron Slice of Anniversary Cake

The Perfect Patterns for this Yarn: This yarn comes with a pattern for the Big Scrappy Crochet Tote on the label! You can also try this yarn with the Scrappy Crochet Mittens, Double Brioche Stitch Knit Hood, and Long Way Around Crochet Scarf Pattern. This yarn would also be perfect for the Stitch In Time Capelet!

    Caron Chunky Cupcakes

    Caron Chunky Cupcakes

CLICK HERE to order this yarn!

The Details: 100% Acrylic, 5 - Bulky, 3.5oz, 138 yds, includes a matching faux fur pom pom

My Impressions: This little mini cake is designed to make one hat - with a matching pom! Even the label is extra cute on this one, with little scallops around the top. I got two colorways - Prismatic (again, super colorful and happy!), and Tiramisu Tan, a lovely multi-colored neutral. The pattern included on the label is crochet, which tells me there should be enough to make a simple knit hat as well. This one is more tightly wound than the Anniversary Cake, and while it's still soft, it does feel a bit stronger - useful when making hats they'll love to wear! I love the idea of including the matching pom. This is such a great choice for roadtrips and vacations - pattern, pom, and yarn all in one package!

    Caron Chunky Cupcakes

The Perfect Patterns for this Yarn: The pattern on the label is for the Caron Colorwork Crochet Hat! This yarn is also recommended in the Ridged Stripes Knit Hat, Crochet Prismatic Hat Pattern, and Shaker Rib Knit Hat. I would love to try it out with the Rustic Diamond Hat!

    Caron Macchiato Cakes

    Caron Macchiato Cakes

CLICK HERE to order this yarn!

    The Details: 80% Acrylic and 20% Wool, 5 - Bulky, 8oz, 481 yds

My Impressions: With vibrant colors, an elevated look, and a soft, subtle halo, this yarn is always a lovely choice! This one features gradual color transitions for lots of self-striping possibilities. The wool content gives it a gorgeous look, while the acrylic keeps it strong and soft, and easy to wear. This one does require a little more care, as handwashing is recommended. I got the Glowing Grapefruit colorway - so very bright and eye-catching! - and Atomic Aqua - maybe my favorite, with bright pops of color blended with more subtle shades. This yarn is great for all sorts of home decor, accessories, and even sweaters. I've got plans for this one!

    Caron Macchiato Cakes

The Perfect Patterns for this Yarn: Included with each cake, you'll get a copy of the Crochet Bias Panels Blanket! You can also use this one to make the Two Color Crochet Blanket Wrap, Elbow Length Wrist Warmers, Knit Striped Top Down Sweater, Wrapped In Warmth Crochet Scarf, Harlequin Crochet Rectangular Shawl, Crochet Hooded Hexi Cardigan, and Ribbed and Cropped Knit Pullover. Another great option for a one skein project in this yarn would be the Odds Are Shawl!

    Caron Smash Cakes

    Caron Smash Cakes

CLICK HERE to order this yarn!

    The Details: 100% Acrylic, 4 - Medium, 8oz, 432 yds

My Impressions: I picked up the Caramel Crunch and Turquoise Punch colorways of this one - one neutrals, one neons! This yarn has a unique look - it's two plies twisted together. Sometimes the plies are the same color, but sometimes one of the plies switches to black - you'll have to look at the photos to see what I mean. This creates a really interesting effect in the finished items, with a lot of interest and depth. This one will take some swatching to find just the right project, and I think sticking to simpler stitch patterns will be key to making this yarn shine. Complicated stitch patterns are likely to just get lost with this one!

The Perfect Patterns for this Yarn: Luckily, there are some patterns already ready for you - like the one on the label, for the Knit Smashing Split Ribbed Cowl! That one's not on the site as of the writing of this blog post, so you'll need to get the yarn for now. Other patterns to try with this yarn include the Smash Colors Knit Yoke Sweater, Crochet Candy Check Blanket, and the Top That Crop Top and Sleeves! I would love to see this one used to make the Knotted Rainbow Tote!

    Caron Smash Cakes

    Caron Groovy Cloud Cakes

    Caron Groovy Cakes

CLICK HERE to order this yarn!

    The Details: 100% Polyester, 4 - Medium, 8oz, 720 yds

My Impressions: Ooo, now this is SOFT! I got both the Plum Paradise and Minty Marvel, and I can't stop petting them. This yarn is fuzzy, though the halo is small. The overall impression I keep getting is Monet's watercolors - especially in the Minty Marvel and Icy Lime colorways. I think this yarn will be gorgeous in sweaters and accessories, as well as home decor. It's fluffy, and incredibly light, as evidenced by the yarndage - a mind boggling 720 yards of medium-weight yarn in only 8 ounces?! Compare that to the other yarns in your stash to see just how light that is.

The Perfect Patterns for this Yarn: As always, there's a lovely free pattern on the label - in this case, it's for the Cozy Cubes Block Stitch Crochet Scarf! This one also isn't on Yarnspirations yet, so there's another reason to save your label. Other great patterns for this yarn include the This Way and That Way Crochet Scarf Pattern, Crochet Oversized Zip Front Hoodie Pattern, and Knit Ruffle Tie-Front Cardigan! I would love to try it out with the Paloma Cardigan!

    Knit Ruffle Tie-Front Cardigan

    Caron Anniversary Cakes

    Caron Anniversary Cakes

CLICK HERE to order this yarn!

    The Details: 100% Acrylic, 6 - Super Bulky, 35.3 oz, 1029 yds

My Impressions: This is the BIG ONE! You've seen these before, and they are back again with 8 gorgeous colorways. With over 1000 yards of yarn you can make a small blanket and only have 2 ends to weave in when you're done. (And it makes matching dye lots easier when you're only getting 2 or 3 balls!) This super bulky yarn will work up quickly, and stand up to what you dish out - it's machine washable and dryable! Six of the colorways are bold and bright, but don't fret if you love a more neutral look - Oyster is the perfect blend of beachy tones!

The Perfect Patterns for this Yarn: This one doesn't come with a pattern on the label, but there are patterns for it on Yarnspirations! These include the Sample Blue Crochet Afghan, Let's Stripe Crochet Cardigan, Stripes on the Go Knit Scarf, Chevron Stripes Crochet Blanket, Warm & Cool Crochet Blanket, Crochet Hexi-Cardigan, and Knit Diamond Ruana! It would also be really interesting to see this worked up in the Cuff to Cuff Colorblock Cardigan!

    Sweetcorn Motif Crochet Block

    by Marly Bird

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 20

Above, you can see the square that Marly made in 4 colors! Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black.

    MooglyCAL2025 Block 20

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 20

My Notes: The Sweetcorn Motif Crochet Block is a lovely celebration of popcorn stitches and color - so pretty! It's well written and easy to follow - and professionally tech edited by Robyn Chachula! There are even charted/diagrammed instructions included, making it super easy to crochet your own, no matter your skill level. If you've followed Marly's patterns before, you know you're in for a good time.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Popcorn, Standing Double Crochet, Standing Single Crochet, Standing Half Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to 12" exactly with the pattern as written.

    Rnd 1: Black
    Rnds 2 and 3:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 4:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 5:
    Mallard
    Rnd 6:
    Merlot
    Rnd 7:
    Black
    Rnd 8:
    Cornsilk
    Rnds 9 and 10:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 11:
    Mallard
    Rnd 12:
    Merlot
    Rnd 13:
    Black

This square barely required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

    Juniper & Oakes: Designer Showcase

This Designer Showcase features Juniper & Oakes! Erin is a lovely person and a talented crochet designer! She is a Mosaic Crochet Expert and I'm excited to share more of her work with you here, including five of her free crochet patterns!

    A Bit About the Designer

Erin's designs are colorful, fun, and very clever! Here's a bit about Erin Toews, the designer behind Juniper & Oakes, in her own words:

    Juniper & Oakes: Designer Showcase

Erin is the designer and creative mind behind Juniper & Oakes, where she blends cozy yarns, bold colorwork, and thoughtful stitch design into crochet patterns that are worked up into heirlooms. Specializing in overlay mosaic crochet, Erin is known for helping makers confidently step out of their comfort zones and explore new, adventurous stitches ...one row at a time.

Her designs, including the Mosaic Gingerbread, Nordic Star, and Mosaic Flower Garden Blankets, have brought thousands of crocheters together through engaging crochetalongs (CALs) and vibrant online communities. Whether she's leading a new CAL, filming tutorials for YouTube, or writing her next pattern book, Erin is always creating spaces where crocheters feel supported, challenged, and inspired.

She is also the host of the Mosaic Crochet Summit, a popular virtual event that unites mosaic crochet enthusiasts from around the world for a deep dive into this exciting technique.

Outside the world of yarn, Erin is a wife and mom of three. As a former nurse, time management, patience, and multitasking are hardwired into her DNA. She’s passionate about raising curious kids who love to try new things... whether that’s tasting unfamiliar foods, exploring new places, or simply noticing the world around them. That same spirit of curiosity and growth shows up in her design work, too.

Most days, you’ll find her crocheting with an audiobook in her ears or rewatching Gilmore Girls or Outlander while cozy under a handmade blanket. She believes crochet should bring both calm and creativity to your life - and she loves helping others find that balance.

    A Bit About the Author

Salena Baca, author of Crochet Granny Square Tops, Bags, and More: Review and Giveaway

Salena Baca is a well known crochet designer, and a prolific crochet author! She has already written over a dozen books, and has two more in the works!

"I learned to crochet at the age of 5 and haven't put my hook down since! I've published over 300 patterns, authored 16 crochet books, taught 2 courses with Craftsy, and launched the American Crochet Association. I currently live in Oregon with my husband, son, 2 cats and 1 dog."

    Now let's dive in!

Inside Granny Stitch Blankets: 10 Fresh and Modern Granny Throws That Go Way Beyond the Iconic Square

The granny stitch is a classic - in whatever direction you take it! Salena has used this simple stitch pattern to create 10 beautiful blanket designs.

"Granny squares—the undeniable superstar of crochet! They’re practically a rite of passage for every crocheter.

But what if you could take that iconic motif and give it a fresh, modern twist? That’s exactly what this book is all about!

Inside, you’ll find 10 creative takes on the beloved granny square, with new shapes like hexagons and triangles. The patterns in this collection are just what you need to boost your crochet skills, try out new techniques, and craft something you’ll treasure for years. Whether you're after a cozy blanket for lounging, a chic accent for your sofa, or a charming throw for your favorite armchair, these designs have you covered—literally.

Ready to take your granny skills to the next level?"

Granny Stitch Blankets by Salena Baca - Review and Giveaway

After a quick introduction, Granny Stitch Blankets jumps right into the patterns! Each of the patterns in this book features Lion Brand Yarn: Basic Stitch Thick & Quick Anti-Microbial, Scarfie, Hue + Me, Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Jiffy, Re-Spun Thick & Quick, Cover Story Lazy Days Thick & Quick, and Bundle of Love. The stitch key lets us know what skills we'll need: ch, dc, hdc, sc, sl st, and tr should cover it!

This is a mix of medium (4), bulky (5), and super bulky (6) yarns - some held doubled! So you can visit your stash or pick your favorites as you work your way through this book.

There is a good variety of blanket styles here - even though they all use the same stitch, each is distinct! Using color, direction, and clever joining, one stitch pattern will keep you entertained throughout!

Each pattern in Granny Stitch Blankets includes full written instructions, with helpful notes and closeup photos. There is also a graphic or graphic for how to join the sections, if needed!

Granny Stitch Blankets is a sort of meditation on the granny stitch, exploring just 10 of the many ways you can feature it in blankets and throws! This is a classic book you can return to again and again in your crochet journey!

    Edinburgh Evenings Scarf

September 26, 2025 by Tamara Kelly 4 Comments

    Edinburgh Evenings Scarf

The Edinburgh Evenings Scarf is a unique and lacy scarf that I designed for our trip to Scotland! Made with gorgeous Katia Yarns, this linked mesh stitch turns your skeins into a stunning wrap that’s mesmerizing to crochet. Make your own stunning scarf with the crochet pattern below!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Katia Yarns.

First Made in Katia Cotton-Merino Fine

When I reached out to Katia to create a pattern for our Craftours trip to Scotland, we landed on a gorgeous new yarn - Illusion Merino! Check out all these happy crocheters and knitters with their lovely yarn and scarves! ♥

Illusion Merino is a limited run yarn that has been taking off in Europe, so I didn't get a skein to play with ahead of time! Luckily, Illusion Merino is essentially a self-striping version of Katia Concepts Cotton-Merino Fine - and they sent several gorgeous skeins to create this scarf with!

    Edinburgh Evenings Scarf

This yarn is a dream to crochet with, and whichever one you use, I think you'll love the result. For the solids version, I used 6 total skeins. Should you be able to get your hands on self-striping Illusion Merino, it's a one-skein pattern! And of course that's the joy of a scarf - you can really use any yarn of your choice!

    Edinburgh Evenings Scarf

    Inspired by a Knit Mesh

This trip to Scotland was a little unique - this time we had a mix of knitters and crocheters! So I wanted to make sure that everyone got to enjoy the trip with a similar project - still using our featured yarn from Katia. So I went searching and found this gorgeous free Women's Knit Scarf Pattern! It looked like a great pattern to try out our featured yarn with, featuring a memorable repeat that's perfect for knitting on the road. So I set out to get a similar look in crochet.

    Edinburgh Evenings Scarf

I quickly came up with several different stitch patterns - and loved them all. Luckily, that weekend I was at the Crochet Guild of America Chain Space Retreat, so I was able to do a quick poll of some of the attendees - and the linked mesh won! And now, thanks to our trip to Scotland, it's been thoroughly tested (thank you again to all the ladies on that trip)!

    Edinburgh Evenings Scarf

I haven't spotted this stitch pattern in any dictionary before, but of course, great minds think alike - so did I invent it? Maybe, maybe not. But I'm super excited by it - and I hope you enjoy trying it out yourself!

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 19

My Notes: The Brick Mosaic Crochet Afghan Square is such a great introduction to overlay crochet - and mosaic crochet in the round! With this sort of pattern, you're going to get all different looks with everyone's color choices, and I can't wait to see! Be sure to read through Nicki's notes before you begin, there is a lot of really important info you'll need before you stitch.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, FLO and BLO - Front Loop Only and Back Loop Only, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to 12" after Rnd 18, so I omitted Rnds 19 and 20.

    All B/Even Numbered Rnds: Black
    Rnds 1, 3, and 5: Cornsilk
    Rnds 7 and 9: Boysenberry
    Rnds 11, 13, and 15: Mallard
    Rnd 17: Merlot
Rnds 19 and 20 were skipped for size.

This square barely required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

    Birch Bark Candle Cozy

Birch Bark Candle Cozy Crochet Pattern on Moogly

There’s just something so cozy about candlelight - and when you dress it up with a handmade touch, it gets even better! The Birch Bark Candle Cozy is a quick, easy project that turns an ordinary candle - real or fake - into a rustic, farmhouse-style accent piece. With just two shades of medium-weight yarn, you can crochet this faux-birch design that looks great in any season. Whether you’re setting the mood for a fall gathering, adding a natural element to your holiday décor, or just giving your everyday space a little handmade charm, this project is as fun to make as it is to use. Plus, it’s a fantastic little stash buster!

    Made in Worsted Weight Yarn

For this project, I used Lily Sugar’n Cream - a classic 100% cotton yarn that’s easy to find and perfect for home décor. It comes in a huge variety of colors and styles, but I went with Soft Ecru and Jute to really capture that natural birch bark look. The sturdy cotton gives this cozy just the right amount of structure, while still being soft and flexible enough to slip over your candle. And since it’s such a popular yarn, chances are you’ve already got a skein or two waiting in your stash!

Of course, you can use whatever yarn you like - especially if you are covering a battery-operated candle! But if you are putting this on something with an open flame, I do recommend using something less flammable or meltable - I'd stick with cotton or wool and avoid anything acrylic or polyester. Use your smarts when fire is involved!

    Make It a Set!

I originally designed the Birch Bark Candle Cozy for the Stashbusting Quickies collection from 2021. And now I'm sharing it here - free on the blog, but also still available as a paid PDF on Ravelry and Etsy (see the banners above). But it was inspired by a previous project - the Birch Bark Basket!

Birch Bark Basket - crochet inspired by nature! Free pattern on Moogly :)

So now, you can make it a set - or just make the part you like - and in any color! I can't wait to see what you all make with these simple patterns!

    BLO - Back Loop Only

HOW TO CREATE THE BIRCH BARK CROCHET STITCH PATTERN

Beginning in Round 7, each stitch is worked over a strand of color B, enclosing the strand inside the stitch. The length of each stripe and its placement is random and at will. Birchbark trees have random (to our eyes) stripes, and like a tree, your cozy should be your own unique work of art! To add a stripe of color B to the pattern, pull the strand to the front of your work and let it hang.

Continue making sc stitches as before, with color B hanging loose in front of your work. This could be for just one stitch, or several – it’s up to you! Then when the stripe is done, pull Color B back behind the next stitch and continue as before, enclosing it inside each stitch. Be sure to give a tug to color B once in a while to make sure it doesn’t sag – but don’t pull so tight that the main color fabric buckles either.

    Windy City Cowl

The Windy City Cowl is a quick and warm crochet project, perfect for adding to your seasonal wardrobe! I originally designed this pattern for Stitch Up Chicago, and now I'm excited to share it with all of you here!

    Made with Caron Simply Me

Caron Simply Me is one of my favorite newer Bulky yarns! I've used it before, when making the Rocky Road Wrap, Mimosa Cowl, Blueberry Twist Headband, and Poppyseed Twist Headband. It's great accessories, but would also make an amazing blanket.

Moogly patterns featuring Caron Simply Me

'Simply Me is perfect for any project you want to make simply yours! Simply Me is our brand-new Bulky weight yarn, designed to be perfect for allowing the personalization of your home decor and apparel needs. Perfect for beginners and experienced crafters alike, Simply Me will have everyone looking at your latest project thinking, "That's so you!"'

    Windy City Cowl

It's a lofty yarn, full of bouce, and a joy to stitch with. With 17 colors to choose from, you can make one to match all your favorite outfits!

    Windy City Cowl

Customize Your Cowl for Your Cityscape - or Rural Retreat!

The Windy City Cowl features a close fit to keep you warm and snug no matter the weather. And in addition to the color, you can adjust it for size! Prefer it longer? Just add more rows! You should be able to just about double the length before you need to purchase additional yarn.

    Windy City Cowl

As a native midwesterner, I know how windy winter weather can be - heck, any season! And some days a cowl is just more practical because it won't try to blow off! But if you'd like to make this piece for warmer weather, just switch to a lighter-weight yarn, in something like a cotton. You can add more rows to create something looser and more indoorsy - have fun with it!

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway on Moogly

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore by Lori Harrison covers it all - from the basic stitches and all their combos, to cables, lace, colorwork, and more! Take a peek inside below, and then enter to win your own copy, right here on Moogly!

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for review; all opinions are my own. This post includes affiliate links.

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore Review

    A Bit About the Author

    Lori Harrison

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore is Lori's second book, and it debuted just last week!

"Lori Harrison is the Tunisian crochet designer behind Aklori Designs and author of Exploring Tunisian Crochet. Designing since 2017, she strives to create enjoyable, inclusive, and easy-to-follow garment and accessory patterns for all levels of Tunisian crochet enthusiasts. As an engineer in her day job, she designs as a way to nurture her creative side while also relaxing at the end of the day. Influenced by her engineering background, patterns are concise but comprehensive and tailored to the experience level required for the pattern. Lori lives in Tucson, Arizona with her husband, three cats, and a sassy Shiba Inu. When she doesn’t have a Tunisian crochet hook in her hand, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and nature photography. "

    Now let's dive in!

Inside Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore

While Lori points out that no stitch dictionary is totally comprehensive - the possible combinations are just too many - Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore is the closest I've seen.

"Discover the ultimate guide to Tunisian crochet with this comprehensive stitch dictionary, featuring over 500 stitches and stitch patterns. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced maker, this book is your go-to resource for exploring Tunisian crochet stitches.

    • 500+ Tunisian crochet stitches: Each stitch is accompanied by a detailed swatch, chart, and step-by-step row-by-row instructions.
    • Clear tutorials: Packed with photo tutorials, so you'll never have to wonder where to place your hook.
    • Diverse stitch patterns: Explore cables, lace, colorwork, bobbles, shells, fans, and so much more.
    • From a trusted expert: Author Lori Harrison, celebrated for her innovative Tunisian crochet designs, builds on the success of her first book, Exploring Tunisian Crochet. This second book is inspired by her passion for pushing the boundaries of stitch creation.
    • The ultimate reference: A must-have addition to every Tunisian crocheter's library, this is the most complete stitch dictionary available."

    Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary

Tunisian Crochet begins with all the info you need to get started with Tunisian crochet. This section covers how to make the Foundation Row, the Anatomy of a Tunisian crochet stitch, and how to use this book. There are lots of photos, and tons of great information. Learning to read Tunisian charts was on my to-do list - and a quick read of this section has me feeling confident and ready!

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway

After that, it jumps right into the Basic Tunisian stitches and their variations. And there are so many I've never seen before - it really gets the gears moving! And I love that there is a note on each on how to adjust it for left-handed crocheters.

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway

While Tunisian crochet has a reputation for being more difficult than "standard" crochet, the stitches and patterns in this book start off super approachable. As you can see above, the explanations for the stitches are simple and easy to understand. I love that pictures of the "wrong side" are included!

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway

After all the basic variations, Lori has included a section on Increases and Decreases. It's a short but fantastic addition, and rare to see in a stitch dictionary - I was very surprised and pleased to see it!

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway

And we're still just getting started! That all was Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, we start getting into the stitch patterns! For easy reference, they are broken into vertical stripes, horiztontal stripes, honeycomb stitches, basketweave stitches, and "other" for the few outliers. Now we also get charts with each entry - such a great way to learn!

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway

At this point, of course, the instructions to start to get a little more complicated. Chapter 3 is about Lace Stitches - my personal Tunisian nemesis. Still easier than knitted lace for me! They're so pretty though... okay, I'll try again. With lots of stitch markers!

Chapter 4 covers cable stitches, and Tunisian cables are genuinely so fun - especially if you also know how to knit cables. And the examples are lovely. Between this section and the shaping, you're halfway to your own cable sweater!

And. There's. Still. More! Chapter 5 is all about Colorwork - and she's included information on how to change colors for a variety of effects. It's really amazing how much of a difference the color changes make in Tunisian stitches. After stripes Lori shows us how to work mosaic stitches in Tunisian - a combo I hadn't even considered before!

Tunisian Crochet: A Stitch Dictionary with 501 Stitches to Explore - Review and Giveaway

Finally, Chapter 6 is all about stitch patterns for Tunisian in the Round. This is another challenge I have yet to tackle, and I'm loving the inspiration here. The book wraps up with a handy stitch index that lists the abbreviation, full name, and page number to find it on - super handy with a book this size!

Purchase your own copy of this book on Amazon, or ask for it at your local bookseller! And be sure to check out Lori's other book, Exploring Tunisian Crochet - which includes "20 stunning patterns for shawls, scarves, hats, and more!"

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 18

My Notes: The Geometric Eye Crochet Blanket Square is simple, but it's also a great study of what you can do with simple stitches. Rounds of single and double crochet are embellished with surface crochet and chains to excellent effect! It's mesmerizing! Lindsey is a talented designer and tech editor, so her instructions are well-written and easy to follow.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Magic Circle, Standing Single Crochet, Standing Double Crochet, Chainless Starting Double Crochet, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to 12" after Rnd 12, so I omitted Rnd 13.

    Rnd 1: Cornsilk
    Rnd 2: Black
    Rnd 3: Cornsilk
    Rnd 4:
    Black
    Rnd 5:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 6:

    Rnd 7:
    Mallard
    Rnd 8:

    Rnd 9:
    Merlot
    Rnd 10:
    Black
    Rnd 11:

    Rnd 12:
    Black
    Rnd 13:
    Skipped for size
    Inner Ring: Mallard
    Middle Ring: Black
    Outer Ring: Boysenberry

This square required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

Pick Your Projects and Join Moogly at Big Raven Farm

Did you catch my recent appearance on Joleen's Happy Time Craftcast? We had a great time talking about crochet, yarn, and crafts - and our upcoming retreat this October! And I want to make sure you know all about it!

We *Were* Live Today on Joleen's Happy Time Craftcast – Watch It Here!

    What, Where, When?!

    Here are the fast facts:

    When: October 23–26, 2025

Where: Big Raven Farm - A 15-acre retreat center in the heart of the beautiful Driftless region, aka Spring Grove, Minnesota!

What: Pick Your Projects with Crochet is a choose-your-own-adventure affair - an immersive retreat for creative spirits who want to learn, connect, and make beautiful things with their hands. Hosted by myself and Joleen Emery of Big Raven Farm, this weekend is all about following your curiosity and enjoying the process - and spending time together!

    Ready to go? CLICK HERE!

    Need More Convincing?

    Let's dive into those details!

When: Arrive on Thursday, October 23rd, and settle in for our welcome dinner and special swap. We'll spend Friday and Saturday eating, crafting, and enjoying Big Raven Farm together. Sunday morning, we'll wrap up and depart with memories of a wonderful experience - and hopefully, plans to do it all again!

Where: Big Raven Farm is a unique destination here in the Midwest, located in the Driftless region - where Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa meet. This area was untouched by the most recent glacial period, leaving its landscape largely unchanged from before the last ice age. It's a stunning and too often overlooked part of the country, and Big Raven Farm is an amazing way to experience it.

This 15-acre retreat center features 6 charming and comfortable rooms, surrounded by the serene landscapes. The rooms are equipped with all the modern amenities (including great wifi!) to ensure a restful night’s sleep. During your time there, take advantage of the on-site hiking trails, sprawling porches, inviting patios, and yoga studio. Craft - and relax - at your own pace!

What: Your 4-Day Retreat Package Includes…

    Expert-led workshops and demonstrations:

This weekend is all about following your curiosity and enjoying the process. You’ll choose from a curated menu of project options in both crochet and paper arts. Want to make an adorable animal squishy or a big chunky pumpkin? I will be there to guide you through it. More drawn to intricate folding, layering, and storytelling through paper? Joleen has you covered. Each project listing includes the supplies you’ll need to bring—your hosts will offer instruction, inspiration, and one-on-one support throughout the weekend.

There’s no set order or pressure to finish. Start where you feel inspired, take breaks when you like, and follow your creative energy. If you complete one project and want to start another, you’re welcome to keep going while others are still stitching, folding, or assembling.

4 days (3 nights) at this beautiful country estate - click here and scroll to the bottom to see the rooms currently available! Deer, turkeys, pheasants, grouse, foxes, raccoons, opossums, and turtles are all commonly spotted, and if you listen closely, you’re likely to hear coyotes calling back and forth across the valley after sunset. If we're lucky enough to get clear skies, there should be fantastic stargazing.

Daily farm-to-table breakfast, lunch, and dinner:

Enjoy delicious gourmet meals prepared by Darin Warling, the executive chef at Big Raven Farm, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Their farm-to-table dining experience caters to all dietary preferences and requirements! (Just let them know ahead of time, please!)

Unlimited access to the crafting spaces and yoga studio. Complimentary high-speed wifi. Optional evening social events and entertainment.

Will you join us? I hope to see you there!

As always, Furls really knocked it out of the park with these Matte Grape Streamline Metal Crochet Hooks. The finish is just gorgeous - deep, rich, and velvety. It feels like holding a little piece of luxury in your hand.

Furls Grape Streamline Metal Crochet Hooks Giveaway

And the glide? Oh my goodness. If you’ve ever struggled with snagging or splitting yarn, these hooks are a dream. They move through stitches like butter, and the weight gives them just the right balance - light enough to keep your hands happy, but solid enough to feel substantial. The ergonomic shape really does make a difference, especially when you’re working on a big project or crocheting for hours at a time. My hands don’t get nearly as tired compared to some other hooks.

Personally, I think these hooks hit that sweet spot between “functional tool” and “piece of art.” They look stunning sitting in a hook jar, but they’re made to work - and they do it beautifully.

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 17

My Notes: The Daylily Crochet Square is straightforward but never boring! Almost every row brings a new and different stitch pattern to enjoy. The written pattern is easy to follow, and this one should be do-able by all skill levels - though I encourage newbies to check out the linked tutorials below! One last note - you will have to work back into the slip stitches that you make in Rnd 3 - so be sure to work them loosely (there's a tutorial below for that too)!

Sizing: I got the right size with this pattern as written.

    Rnds 1 - 3: Cornsilk
    Rnd 4:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 5:
    Cornsilk
    Rnd 6:
    Boysenberry
    Rnd 7:
    Cornsilk
    Rnds 8 and 9:
    Boysenberry
    Rnds 10 and 11:
    Mallard
    Rnd 12:
    Merlot
    Rnd 13:
    Mallard
    Rnd 14:
    Merlot
    Rnd 15:
    Mallard
    Rnd 16:
    Black

This square required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method

PLEASE NOTE: The designers all hold individual copyrights for their patterns. They may choose to make videos of their patterns, and you can certainly request them from the designers. They may offer paid PDFs of the pattern, but have agreed to leave it up for free on their website or on Ravelry for as long as possible.

I enjoy sharing my passion for fiber art through my quilting, knitting, and crochet patterns inspired by animals and nature. My happy place is where fabric and yarn meet fun!" (via Amazon.com) You can see more of her work at IraRott.com!

Pokémon Crochet Squares by Ira Rott: Review and Giveaway

I don't know how many Pokémon games my kids have, but I know it's more than one. And you don't have to play to know who the Pokémon are - they are a cultural phenomenon! A quick internet search tells me that as of August 2025, there are 1,025 Pokémon in the National Pokédex. So while you won't find ALL of them in this book, you'll find over 30 - and that's still a whole lot!

Pokémon Crochet Squares by Ira Rott: Review and Giveaway

While I don't know all the names, I know the "main" guys are all here - Pikachu, the Poké Ball, Mudkip, Squirtle, Tepig, Charmander, Bulbasaur... and a bunch of other names that are a bit less familiar to me. In addition to the Pokémon squares, there are patterns that show you how to turn them into a lap blanket, pillow, banner, mug rug, play cubes, and wall hanging!

Pokémon Crochet Squares by Ira Rott: Review and Giveaway

The patterns in this book were all made using Stylecraft Special DK, but you can use whatever yarn you like. In addition to the yarn, Ira does use a few other tools to bring her squares to life - craft felt, beads, fabric glue, stuffing, and embroidery floss. And from what I see, all that effort is well worth it!

Pokémon Crochet Squares by Ira Rott: Review and Giveaway

Each pattern includes standard written crochet instructions, charts, and step-by-step instructions with lots of photos. The techniques section in the back really sets you up for success with close-up pics and instructions on how to add the felt and other special details!

Pokémon Crochet Squares by Ira Rott: Review and Giveaway

Ira always creates the most amazing, beautiful designs, and Pokémon Crochet Squares is no exception. Each little face and square is perfect down to the stitch - truly impressive! If you or someone you love is a Pokémon fan, this book is your next must have!
