    Block #10:

    Celtic Afghan Square

Above you can see the square that Jennifer made in 3 colors! Below is my CAL square, in my 5 colors of Red Heart With Love - Merlot, Mallard, Boysenberry, Cornsilk, and Black.

    Details for MooglyCAL2025 Block 10

My Notes: Jennifer's designs always feature simple stitches used in special ways - and this pattern is the same! Don't let it's looks intimidate you - it's genuinely easier than it looks. And she includes diagrams for both right and left-handed crocheters, to help you lay out your knot.

When it's time to work around the knot, it's helpful to count back from the next point when it's time to move to the next cord section, to figure out exactly where to join to. Don't be afraid to use lots of stitch markers here, even when not called for. I found marking all the ch sps to be very useful as I worked, for all the cords.

To check your size as you work, measure one side of the first Triangle you make. That edge needs to be less than 6", or your square will be oversized. This is a chance to switch to a smaller hook for the triangles, to make them fit within the 12" block.

Helpful Links and Tutorials: Crochet Abbreviations, Join with sc/Standing Single Crochet, BLO - Back Loop Only, Treble Crochet, Dc2tog, and seamless join.

Sizing: I got to size as written (see My Notes above for how I checked it before finishing). But everyone's gauge is different, so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to ensure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down, not diagonally/corner to corner.

    What I Did:

I used a Susan Bates US-J, 6.0 mm Twist and Lock hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):

    Short Cord 1: Merlot
    Short Cord 2:
    Boysenberry
    Long Cord:
    Mallard
    Cord Edging (all):
    Cornsilk
    Rounds 1 and 2:
    Black
    2 Triangles:
    Merlot
    2 Triangles:
    Boysenberry
    Square Edging:
    Black

This square required a mild blocking, so I used the wet blocking method.
