ALL ABOUT THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

It seems like every day there are new amazing projects you can make with granny squares! This one is one of my favorites, and it's just such a unique way to construct a garment. This one is like a stay-put wrap or shawl - so cozy and wearable!

The Market Day Cardigan is made to be big and cozy - super oversized, a final layer. So with that in mind, there are 3 sizes to fit most - feel free to go down a size if you like a closer fit. And here in Part 2, there is also an opportunity to try it on and adjust the size!

One of the my favorite things about this pattern is the way it transforms from "squares" to a wearable piece - but that will happen in Part 3! The Market Day Cardigan is wonderful for every skill level. You'll learn how to crochet a granny square, how to crochet in the front and back loop only, how to sew the mattress stitch, and how to make one of my favorite styles of crochet ribbing. If you've more experienced, then you'll get to try a new yarn and a maybe a whole new construction method!

THE YARN FOR THE MARKET DAY CARDIGAN

To make this crochet vest I used new Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn! This yarn definitely has a bit of a learning curve, but I think it's well worth it! CLICK HERE to see how to make great granny squares using this yarn. We'll use it for the rest of the sweater too - no need to plan the color placement after the squares are made.

I went with the Aran-Cream colorway for a neutral look, but this yarn has so many great color options each sweater can be unique! Mix and match them for a custom look, or use another 4-worsted/medium-weight yarn to make your own 6" granny squares.

    NOTES:

This pattern is being presented as a crochet along. Below you will find Part 2 of the pattern. Part 3 will be in a later blog post. CLICK HERE for Part 1.

To try it on for size: As you sew your squares together, do NOT weave in the ends. After they are all attached to each other, use a stitch marker to attach the corners at the two red dots and two blue dots as shown in the Assemble the Squares schematics below. This creates the armholes. Try the garment on, and see if you want to remove or add squares to change the size. Then remove the stitch markers and go on to the Edging instructions.

For a long-length sweater: Add squares to the top two rows along the sides, and to the bottom of the bottom row of squares. Be sure to add as many columns of squares to the top sides as you add rows of squares to the bottom. Remember that each column/row adds 6 inches of length.

Market Day Cardigan Part Two Instructions

    Assemble The Squares

Using cut lengths of yarn, a yarn needle, and the mattress stitch (see linked tutorial above), sew the finished squares together as shown in the schematic for your size below. They do not need to be sewn in any particular orientation or order, as long as they match the schematic at the end. Be sure that all squares are right side (RS) up as you sew. Each square in the schematic represents one motif.

Market Day Cardigan - Part 2, Size 1 SchematicMarket Day Cardigan - Part 2, Size 2 SchematicMarket Day Cardigan - Part 2, Size 3 Schematic

    Edge The Squares

If right-handed, join with sl st from the RS to the right top corner ch-3 sp of the sweater (see green dot in schematic above).
If left-handed, join with sl st from the RS to the left top corner ch-3 sp of the sweater (see purple dot in schematic above).

Ch 1, sc in same ch-3 sp, [*{sc in next 3 sts, sc in next ch sp} 5 times, 2 sc in next ch sp; rep from * to next ch-3 corner,** ch 2, sc in same ch-3 sp] 6 times, ending last rep at **, sc in same ch-3 sp as first st, ch 1, hdc in first sc of rnd. Do not break the yarn.

If right-handed, place a stitch marker in st #44 counting from the right corner (green dot) along the top (longest) edge, and in st #69 counting from the left (purple dot) along the top edge.
If left-handed, place a stitch marker in st #44 counting from the left corner (purple dot) along the top (longest) edge, and in st #69 counting from the right (green dot) along the top edge.

Block the sweater so far if desired, being sure not to break the yarn. Next... Part 3!

    Stay Tuned for Part 3!

Now we've sewn all our squares together, put a nice solid sc edging around the piece, and we're ready for Part 3! Next week we'll add our shawl collar and the bottom hem that pulls it all together. Hello Pam! You can keep it at 7 as long as that's wide enough for her across the back measurement!
