While you don't have to felt this box to use or gift it, it does give it a more "solid fabric" look and feel. If you'd prefer a different yarn but still want to felt it, be sure to choose a wool that is NOT superwash. If you'd prefer not to felt it, you can use whatever yarn you like - Bernat Blanket would be a fun way to make a great big Conversation Heart Crochet Box!

    NOTES:

This pattern is felted. Felting is an imprecise process, with a unique result every time. Felting is optional, but if you do want to felt this project, be sure to do so before embroidering it. Of course, embroidering it is also optional!

This pattern begins with a magic circle, but is worked in rows. If you would prefer to avoid the magic circle, chain 2 and work the first row into the second ch from the hook.

    Assembly: Felting and Embroidery

    Felting with a Washing Machine

Place your finished crochet project in a zippered mesh bag or a pillowcase to protect your washing machine from loose fibers. If you're felting multiple items, keep them separate to prevent them from sticking together.

Set your washing machine to a hot water cycle and add a small amount of mild detergent. High water agitation and hot temperatures are crucial for the felting process. Avoid using fabric softeners or any additives.

Place the bag containing your crochet project in the washing machine and start the cycle. Check on the progress every 10-15 minutes to ensure the felting is proceeding as expected. Keep in mind that felting time may vary depending on your washing machine and the size of your project.

Once your project reaches the desired level of felting, remove it from the washing machine. Check for a consistent, firm texture and a reduction in size. If needed, repeat the felting process until you achieve the desired results.

After felting, rinse your project under cold water to remove any remaining soap. Gently squeeze out excess water and reshape/block your item to its intended form. Allow it to air dry completely.

    Felting by Hand

Fill a clean bowl or basin with hot water, a small amount of mild detergent, and (optional) a sprinkle of baking soda. Stir to dissolve well. Avoid using fabric softeners or any additives.

Place your finished crochet project in the water. With a wooden spoon or your hands, agitate and stir the crochet pieces. High water agitation and hot temperatures are crucial for the felting process.

Check on the progress every 5 minutes to ensure the felting is proceeding as expected. Keep in mind that felting time may vary.

    Add the Embroidery

There are dozens of Conversation Hearts sayings to choose from - and of course, you can always make your own custom one!

To add the embroidery, cut a 2-3 foot length of floss, thread it on a yarn needle, and sew on the block letters to the Top of the Box as desired. Be sure plan out your spacing before you begin. To make letters as shown, I used the backstitch technique (linked in tutorials above).

Forgive my ignorance, but why do you not pull the magic circle closed? I was expecting you to eventually say to pull it closed eventually but never did. I thought maybe it was for sizing so the top would fit over the bottom heart.

So my question is why start with a magic circle to begin with? What is the benefit? What other uses are there for this technique?

Okay, I admit it, I just am curious and want to know all the details.
