There are lots of gorgeous free crochet afghan patterns, and though the crochet edging might come last, don't think that means it isn't important! While I'm a big fan of simple sc and dc borders for letting busier afghan patterns shine, there are hundreds of beautiful and interesting border and edging patterns that are ready to take center stage and dress up and blanket you make. And of course they're not just for blankets - you can put a pretty edge on just about anything! So without further ado, here are my favorite 10 free crochet edging patterns! UPDATE - Now there are 16!

Leaping Stripes and Blocks Beanies :: Free #Crochet Pattern in 5 sizes for the whole family!

Recently, I had a fan request - design a hat to go with the Leaping Blocks and Stripes Blanket pattern. Well if you've been reading Moogly for a while, you know I love to take requests. So here we are - the Leaping Stripes and Blocks Beanies!

    Sizes for the Whole Family

While I'm sure she was just looking for a baby hat to make a little layette set, one of the fun things about the Leaping Blocks and Stripes Blanket pattern is that it includes instructions for several different sizes. Therefore, I just had to design hat sizes for the whole family! Pair it with the blanket for little ones, with the Mesmerizing Messenger Bag for big ones, or let it stand alone as the great beanie pattern it is!

Hookin On Hump Day #58: Link Party for the Fiber Arts

November 5, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 4 Comments

We're closing in on the holidays, with just 7 more weeks to craft for Christmas, and a whole lot less for both Thanksgiving and Hanukkah! So I'm sure your hooks and needles are flying! And that means there's lots of great crafty inspiration and pattern writing happening too - and Sara from My Merry Messy Life and I love it when you share it with us here on HOHD! Remember, with the two of us as co-hosts, the featured projects get twice the publicity, with links on both our sites and all our social media outlets! And if you tweet about it using the hashtag #HOHD, we'll use these to get even MORE attention on your posts and entries. So let's get to it!

Hookin On Hump Day #58 - Holiday patterns and Inspiration from the best fiber arts bloggers!

FEATURED THIS WEEK ON HOOKIN ON HUMP DAY!

#1 - Most-Clicked Link - What's New, Pussy Cat? by Jam Made - such a creative twist on a cat! I love the granny square bellies.

#2 - Brooklyn Fingerless Mitts or Wrist Warmers, Free Crochet Pattern by Crochet Dreamz - LOVE this project! Also comes with a pattern for boot cuffs. Perfect for holiday gifts and it's a FREE pattern!

#3 - The Larksfoot Blanket is Finished! by My World of Crochet - gorgeous use of color and comes with a link to a free crochet chart to make it!

#4 - Autumn Cowl by There Where is Soleil - another project with bright colors using the mosaic stitch.

#5 - Toddler Fingerless Gloves by Stitch 11 - a FREE pattern to make an adorable accessory for little ones!

Great job everyone! Now go grab your I’ve Been Featured button and relish in the spotlight. I’ll be pinning you on my Pinterest Board and featuring you on Facebook and Google+, as will My Merry Messy Life!

Now onto this week’s party! Here are a few simple rules:

    • Please link your post back to one of the hostesses – Moogly or My Merry Messy Life, or grab the Hookin on Hump Day party button here. Without a button on your site or link back on your post, we will not be able to feature it the following week. We have had to pass over many people before because there was no button or link!
    • I’d also really appreciate if you’d follow me on one of my social media links (see the icons at the top left of the page), and I will happily follow back (just leave me a comment that you’re following me from here, and include a link to your own page)!
    • Please visit at least one other link and leave a comment on their post so we can really support each other!
    • Please remember to link to your actual project URL and not your homepage URL, and use the name of your project or post, not your own name.
    • Please, no Etsy stores, Facebook pages, giveaways, non-fiber arts posts or other link parties. Just blog posts to your actual projects.
I can't wait to see what you're working on now! You don’t have to be a designer or a big name blog to join this link party – all you need is to have a post about a fiber arts project you did that you’d like to show off! You don’t have to enter at both blogs either – an entry on one shows up on both, and the featured links are promoted by both My Merry Messy Life and Moogly! Twice the exposure! Remember, this party is in RANDOM order, so there’s no such thing as being late.

New to the Hookin On Hump Day party? To receive reminder emails twice monthly about the party, enter your email here. Otherwise, I won't pester you if you'd rather not receive a reminder!

    Rainbow Happy Fun Pouch

Rainbow Happy Fun Pouch :: Free Crochet Pattern!

Gray skies and cold wind got you down? Crochet some sunshine! The Rainbow Happy Fun Pouch will come to your rescue!

    Cheer Up with Crochet!

The Rainbow Happy Fun Pouch is insanely cheerful. But in a good way! It's a great stash buster, and it works up fast. I wanted a simple pattern with which to try out the Sharp Hook but that could be done without the Sharp Hook too. I utilized a stitch pattern I used before, so there's already a video tutorial for the stitches if you need help there.

    Stashbuster Time!

I also managed to use some leftover yarn from the Moroccan Market Tote - stashbuster! You can use any weight yarn you have, just use a hook one size smaller than that recommended on the label. As written, the pouch is 6.5" tall and 9.5" wide, but the great thing about pouches is they're useful at any size!

    A little Cloudy...

For the appliques I used a free pattern from Fiber Flux: One Round Cloud. They took hardly any yarn at all! And I gave one a little smiley face with some scrap yarn. As you do when making a Rainbow Happy Fun Pouch.

We Won! Craftsy Blogger Awards 2013: Best Tutorials!

October 29, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 32 Comments

Moogly won! We won Knitting and Crochet: Best Tutorials in the Craftsy Blogger Awards for 2013! Thank you ALL so so much for your nominations and votes!

Craftsy Blogger Awards 2013: Best Tutorials for Knitting & Crochet! Thank you to all who voted!

And I definitely have to say WE here. Without all of your support, this never would have happened! Every like, share, comment, and push in the right direction has helped make the tutorials here better and better. And with any luck, they'll just keep improving!

I also have to give a BIG thank you to my partner Geoff - not only does he take care of things when I'm too wrapped up in yarn to see past the end of my hook, but he's also the camera, lighting, and editing whiz behind the video tutorials. I haven't the foggiest idea of how to work the behind the scenes stuff, but I got lucky when I married someone in the video biz. (Of course that's not the only reason I'm lucky, but we'll stop there for now!)

So I just wanted to say thank you - to Craftsy, to my videographer/husband, and to each and every one of you who voted! Thank you thank you thank you! I'll try to keep the good stuff coming!

And Congratulations too, to Petals to Picots for her win for best photography! Be sure to check out her blog if you haven't already - you'll see why she won by a landslide!

    Moroccan Tile Afghan

October 25, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 197 Comments

The Moroccan Tile Afghan :: free #crochet pattern with instructions for 6 different sizes and infinite color schemes!

The Moroccan Tile Afghan is warm, cozy, a fast V stitch pattern to crochet, and full of color! It's the latest free crochet blanket pattern on Moogly - and I've included guidelines for 6 different sizes!

Disclaimer: Materials for this pattern were provided by Lion Brand. This post includes affiliate links.

First the Tote, then the Throw!

The stitch pattern I used in the Moroccan Market Tote lodged itself in my brain. It was so much fun to make, I had to figure out how to make it work in rows rather than rounds. I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, which is a great afghan yarn with lots of saturated colors to choose from - love that! And now I can tell you for sure that it makes a very very warm blanket! Working on it while the temps dropped at night, I was as cozy as could be. And it was a fantastic movie watching pattern - once the pattern is established with the first few rows, you just zip right along!

The Moroccan Tile Afghan :: free #crochet pattern with instructions for 6 different sizes and infinite color schemes!

The pattern here is written for a throw/afghan sized blanket, as that's the size I've made. Based on the throw, I've created the chart below with info to make 5 other sizes! (Since everyone's gauge is different, and the type of yarn used can affect the outcome as well, these are only guidelines - you'll need to make your own gauge swatch if you need it to be exact!) And of course, you can make the whole thing in only two colors if you like - it's all up to you!

The Moroccan Tile Afghan :: free #crochet pattern with instructions for 6 different sizes and infinite color schemes!

This blanket has now been made by so many people, in  so many color schemes, in a wide variety of yarns. And every one is gorgeous!

    Moroccan Tile Afghan Instructions

NOTE: You will work 2 rows, first Color A (odd rows), then Color B (even rows), going in the same direction, before turning your work and starting again with Color A and then Color B.

Row 1: With Color A, ch 142, dc in 5th ch from the hook (counts as dc and skipped ch). Ch 1, dc in the same ch. (V stitch made) *Skip 2 ch, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st. Repeat from * until 2 ch remain. Skip 1 ch, dc in the last ch. Remove the hook from the active loop, and pm (place marker) in loop (this is to keep the stitches from coming out). Do not turn. (140 sts, or 46 V sts)

Row 2. With Color B, STDC in the ch sp of the 1st V of the previous row. Ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. (V st made) [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (138 sts, or 46 V sts)

Row 3: With Color B row held in back, replace hook in active loop of Color A. CSDC, ch 1, dc between the 1st and 2nd st of Row 1 (between the dc and the first V st). [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of Color A/Row 1 (NOT in the ch sps, enclosing Color B/Row 2 in each st) until 1 V st of Row 1 remains. Dc between the last V st and the last dc st, ch 1, dc in the last st. Remove hook, pm, do not turn. (141 sts, 47 V sts)

Row 4: Inserting the hook into the ch sp of the 1st V st of Color A, replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it to the front. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (141 sts, or 47 V sts)

Row 5: With Color B held in back, replace hook in active loop of Color A. CSDC. [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of Color A until 1 V st remains. Dc in the last st. Remove the hook, pm, do not turn. (140 sts, or 46 V sts)

Row 6: Inserting the hook into the ch sp of the 1st V st of Color A, replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it to the front. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (138 sts, or 46 V sts)

Row 7: With Color B row held in back, replace hook in active loop of Color A. CSDC, ch 1, dc between the 1st and 2nd st of previous Color A row (between the dc and the first V st). [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of Color A until 1 V st remains. Dc between the last V st and the last st, ch 1, dc in the last st. Remove hook, pm, do not turn. (141 sts, 47 V sts)

Row 8: Inserting the hook into the ch sp of the 1st V st of Color A, replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it to the front. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (141 sts, or 47 V sts)

Row 9 - 181: Repeat Rows 5 - 8. (This is the Row # for the throw size, see chart above for last row number of other sizes, see below for color sheme)

The Moroccan Tile Afghan :: free #crochet pattern with instructions for 6 different sizes and infinite color schemes!

Want to use the same color scheme I did? Change colors after every 20 rows, so that the previous Color A is set aside, and the previous Color B becomes the new Color A. To attach the new colors, use the STDC st and work in the pattern. The very last "Color A" will be used for one extra odd numbered row to finish off the blanket. Here's the color scheme chart for how I did it.

    Color Scheme Chart

    Rows 1 - 20: Odd A, Even B
    Rows 21 - 40: Odd B, Even C
    Rows 41 - 60: Odd C, Even D
    Rows 61 - 80: Odd D, Even E
    Rows 81 - 100: Odd E, Even F
    Rows 101 - 120: Odd F, Even G
    Rows 121 - 140: Odd G, Even H
    Rows 141 - 160: Odd H, Even I
    Rows 161 - 181: Odd I, Even A

I finished the blanket off with a simple sc border, which used up the leftover bits of yarn from when I changed colors. However, I did need a tiny bit extra of Color I/Scarlet - less than 10 yards! - to finish it off, as that last odd-numbered row left me a little short. If you plan on making a border out of one color, you may need to purchase an extra skein.

    Fallen Leaves Slouch Hat

Fallen Leaves Slouch Hat :: Free #Crochet Pattern!

The Fallen Leaves Slouch Hat was inspired by a gorgeous skein of LB Collection Baby Alpaca I received from Lion Brand Yarn. It was so soft and it just cried out to be made into a fall hat pattern. Paired with a stitch pattern of lacework diamonds that remind me of falling leaves, the Fallen Leaves Slouch Hat is the perfect hat for apple picking and pumpkin patches and all things Autumn.

Fallen Leaves Slouch Hat :: Free #Crochet Pattern!

The Fallen Leaves Slouch Hat free crochet pattern is a one skein project, so you can indulge in a luxury yarn like baby alpaca, or do some stash busting with that lonely skein that's been lingering on the shelf.

It's designed to fit pre-teens/teens/adults with 22-24" heads (it fits me and my 11 year old equally well), and the button is just for decoration - but I think it's a pretty touch. It's only slightly slouchy as written (to keep it a one skein project), but if you want it super slouchy just work more repeats of Rounds 8-11 - easy peasy!

    Puff Stitch (Cluster Stitch)

October 17, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 28 Comments

The Puff Stitch is a specific form of the Cluster Stitch - and can be referred to by both names. It's a simple stitch to make, though it can take a bit of practice to keep all the tension even. It creates a ton of texture and is similar in effect to the bobble. Here's how it's done!

    Whip Stitch Seaming

October 2, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 6 Comments

Previously I demonstrated the Mattress Stitch, which is a great way to create an invisible seam when sewing two pieces of crochet (or knitting) together. Another option for seaming your yarn items is the Whip Stitch. This method isn't invisible, but it is fast as can be, and can add a decorative touch to the right project! Here's how it's done.

    Moroccan Market Tote

Moroccan Market Tote: free #crochet pattern on Moogly!

Totes can be utilitarian, handy, functional, and fun. And the Moroccan Market Tote is all of these - plus beautiful and luxurious! The stitch pattern reminds me of Moroccan Tile (hence the name), and is gorgeous enough to carry anywhere you go - Farmer's market to foreign shores!

Create Your Own Custom Color Pattern

The Moroccan Market Tote features 7 bright colors, but could be made with just 3 skeins if you prefer to skip the stripes. As written, less than 50 yards of each "stripe" color is used, so it could also be a great stash buster. But if you get a chance, I highly recommend the LB Collection Cotton Bamboo - it's a joy to work with, and looks and feels amazing in the finished project!
