Post stitches, or relief stitches, are almost always worked around double crochets or taller stitches. That's how you get the post to stitch around! Making post stitches around single crochet stitches is something you don't see very often - but I find it can be a handy trick, and use it in several Moogly patterns. Here's how it's done.

How to work post stitches into a row of single crochet stitches! This technique can do all kinds of things for your projects. Video and photo tutorial on Moogly!

    Overlapping Post Stitch Pattern

September 11, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 25 Comments

The Chroma Crochet Bag features a stitch pattern that I've seen in several places - but the only name I've seen for it is Ripple Stitch - and since it has nothing to do with chevrons I think it's time to give it a new name. So I've gone with Overlapping Post Stitch - descriptive and easy to remember I hope! Here's how it's done.

Stitching with Love: 10 Free Crochet for a Cause Patterns

September 9, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 38 Comments

Crocheters are remarkably generous people. They give their time and talents to friends and loved ones, often just for the joy of seeing a smile on the other person's face. And there are dozens of charity groups, large and small, that focus on crocheting to help others. Many of those have specific needs and requirements. Today I would like to share some patterns you don't have to be part of a group to make - but they all promote awareness and activism right in the design! Perfect for fundraisers or just letting someone know they're loved. A lot of the patterns are pink, but it's easy to change the color as appropriate. Here are 10 free crochet for a cause patterns! (One warning - one of these patterns contains three quarters of a swear word.)

    Eloise Baby Sweater

September 6, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 347 Comments

Eloise Baby Sweater :: free pattern in 0-6 mths, 6-12 mths, 18mths, 2T and 3T!

The idea for this crochet sweater has been rolling around my brain for the past 6 months and at long last it's finally ready to come out! I think it must've been the buttons - they finally got my hook moving. Or maybe it was waiting for fall... Whatever happened, I'm so glad it did! The Eloise Baby Sweater is the result - and I think it was worth the wait!

Baby sweaters are usually made in sweet pastels, but there was something about the jewel tones of this wool that caught my eye. It reminds me of the stories of Eloise, and her mischievous but ever lovely ways. I think she would have looked rawther fetching wearing this as a baby. Peeking out from the warm gray, each color really pops. As Eloise would say, it's absolutely brilliant. That's not a weird thing to say about a sweater, right?

Eloise Baby Sweater :: free pattern in 0-6 mths, 6-12 mths, 18mths, 2T and 3T!

So on to the pattern! The Eloise Baby Sweater is available in five sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 18 months, 2T, and 3T. If you prefer not to use the Chainless Starting Double Crochet (tutorial linked below), then ch 2 and dc in the first st of each round where applicable.

Don't Frog that Frog: 10 Free Crochet Frog Patterns!

September 2, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 17 Comments

Usually when a crocheter hears the word "frog" they think of pulling out stitches (rippit, rippit!), and undoing minutes, if not hours of work - not a fun thing! While frogs are usually slimy, (or for yarn-users tragic), today's roundup features a far friendlier bit of frogging - crochet frog patterns! And they're all free!

    Invisible Decreases

August 28, 2013 by Tamara Kelly 27 Comments

Decreasing in crochet is usually done in one of two ways. The most common is working "2tog" - where you make the first half of the stitch in two stitches, and finish them as one stitch. The other common method is to just skip a stitch all together! But there are times when these methods just won't do. They might create a lump, leave a hole, or just plain not look right. Enter the Invisible Decrease!

    Vintage Wobble Afghan

Vintage Wobble Afghan :: free #crochet pattern on moogly

It's finally here, my 100th pattern! And this is a very special one, as it comes with a story. The Vintage Wobble Afghan is an old, almost lost stitch pattern, rescued and re-interpreted for today!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links. Red Heart & Furls provided the materials for this pattern.

This One Has a Back Story!

A little while ago, Tami Lemons posted an intriguing photo and request on the Moogly Facebook page. It was an afghan pattern her Great Aunt Ernestine had made - but like many of her generation, she never wrote it down! I'll let Tami tell you the story:

My Great Aunt Ernestine was 95, and I was staying with her at night, so she could remain in her home. She was an avid crocheter and knitter. In fact, she did all kinds of crafts! Anyway, her arthritis in her hands would not let her work with yarn any longer, and I was bragging about her afghans, and asked if she had the patterns for them. She said 'Yes!, Right up here!" and pointed to her temple.

So, I thought it would be a great way to keep her mind focused, if she could recite the patterns from her head, and walk me thru making them. She did! We made 6 afghans. An Apache Tears, a Navajo afghan, some granny squares,  a granny stripe, and of course, this one! This was the second one, with the granny stripe being the first. I was a novice, but she told me every  step to take. After the granny squares, I realized she was declining, so I wrote down the patterns for the last two. the Navajo and Apache tears. But, I failed to journal this one....It was wonderful times. I miss her dearly!

And this is where I came in! Tami and I both searched and searched, but were unable to find a pattern that looked exactly like her photo. So taking the bull by the horns, studying the photo, and playing with some yarn, I was able to decipher the pattern. Now Tami has generously allowed me to share what Great Aunt Ernestine called her "Wobble Blanket" with all of you! I'm so honored!

Vintage Wobble Afghan :: free #crochet pattern on moogly

The original was worked as a scrapghan of sorts - each row in a different color, beautiful in those classic vintage colors. For the one I made, I kept every row a different color, but I worked it up with an ombre effect- my own modern touch. Either way you make it, it's a wonderful, fun crochet afghan pattern - a modern take on the wobble crocheted afghan granny used to make!
