November 28, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 7 Comments

how to crochet the picot stitch video tutorial picot crochet tutorialThe Picot Stitch is a little decorative nub or loop that adds interest, and often texture, to crochet projects. It's often seen on the points of crochet snowflakes and doilies, and on the borders of blankets. It's also part several different stitch patterns.

There are two different ways to make the picot stitch, both of which I demonstrate in this video.

    Tiny Coconut Applique

November 22, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 1 Comment

I came up with these as part of another pattern, but I think some of you might just want to make tiny coconut appliques for other items - so here's the pattern on it's own! It's written for worsted weight yarn, but you can change the size easily by changing the yarn and hook size!free coconut applique pattern free crochet toy pattern free crochet finger puppet carrying case pattern

    Tiny Coconut Applique

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue

    • US - G, 4.00 mm hook
    • 1 yd brown worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Warm Brown shown)
    • 1 yd black worsted weight yarn (Lily Sugar'n Cream in Black shown)
    • Finished size: 1" wide as written

With brown yarn, make Magic Circle. Work 9 hdc in ring, break yarn and use seamless join to finish off, leaving a long tail to sew each on later. Add dots as shown by making french knots with black yarn.

And that's all there is to that! Enjoy!

    Surface Crochet

November 21, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 14 Comments

Surface crochet is a great technique. It works in freeform crochet, tapestry crochet, and all sorts of patterns, from simple to complex. It's basically a way of working a line (or curve, or circle, etc) across the surface of a piece. It doesn't have to follow any predetermined line or pattern - you can go wherever you want with it. It's confusing to read about though - the first time I encountered it in a set of written instructions, all I could say was, "huh?" I figured it out eventually, but a video sure would have been easier. So without further ado...

    How to Surface Crochet

When you're all done with your line, just break the yarn, pull the end up to the front or right side through the last loop, and use a tapestry or yarn needle to go back into the same hole and weave the end in on the wrong side.

Surface crochet can be a major part of a crochet project, or it can be just a tiny embellishment. It's perfect for adding color and interest when you don't want to add bulk or weight, and for outlining color changes to give them a smoother line. Once you try it and see how simple it is to do, I'm sure you'll find lots of ways to use this fun technique.

Have you made any projects using surface crochet before? What did you think? Are there any other techniques or stitches that you'd like to see a video tutorial for here at moogly? Let me know in the comments - I love to take requests!

    Slip Stitch (sl st)

November 14, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 4 Comments

The slip stitch is a handy little stitch to know. So quick and simple it's often overlooked when teaching someone to crochet! But it's very important, and there are many times when no other stitch will do. It closes up circles, it adds great edgings, it can join seams, it's the basis of surface crochet, and it gets you from point A to point B without cutting the yarn. Let's watch:

How to Crochet the Slip Stitch: Right Handed Version

How to Crochet the Slip Stitch: Left Handed Version

As you can see, it's like a chain worked into another row... or like a single crochet without the yarn over. So easy and quick! The slip stitch is used in the vast majority of patterns out there, so learning it is important - even if it's just to make the seamless join.

Another reason to take a closer look at slip stitches is the increasing popularity of slip stitch crochet. More than just a normal slip stitch, these slip stitches twist and bend and use the back loop and front loop only to create amazing new patterns and looks! I have only just begun to learn about this technique myself, but if you're interested in learning more, be sure to check out A Yarnified Life. David Burchall's site really lays out everything you can do with slip stitch crochet, featuring stitches, patterns and tutorials I've never seen anywhere else. David also has patterns for sale on Ravelry, and though they are crochet they look so much like knitting it's hard to believe! Which just goes to show -  there's more than meets the eye in crochet. Even when it comes to the humble slip stitch!

The Winter Sunrise Scarf is light, beautiful, and the perfect accessory for a chilly day. What could be cheerier at this dark and windy time of year? It's great for holiday gift giving, and works up in a flash.

The Winter Sunrise Scarf proves I can't get enough of this cluster stitch pattern! The Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf featured this basic motif in a long repeating loop worked in the round, but I wanted to play with it in a more classic scarf. Classic, but not boring!

The finished crochet scarf pattern as written is about 6 inches wide and about 6 feet long, but as it's a scarf, gauge isn't terribly important - just work the pattern with the hook and yarn that give you the result you like.

To make it with just one skein of yarn, stop the first half when you're not quite halfway through the skein, then make the second half, leaving enough to work the sc edging.

Block the scarf into shape using the appropriate method for your choice of yarns. For the Caron Simply Soft shown, I used the wet towel method, with a very gentle touch, giving the iron hardly any weight at all.

I hope you are enjoying the cluster stitches too, and like the Winter Sunrise Scarf as much as I do. The yarn color and the gentle curve of this stitch pattern made me think of sunrises (and sunsets), but I think this pattern is a great one for any color, and definitely for stripes!

Half and Full Cluster Stitches (HCL and FCL)

November 7, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 7 Comments

The Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf and the Winter Sunrise Scarf use two types of cluster stitches - half and full. These are unique stitches, though pretty representative of the "cluster type" of crochet stitches. Though there is a good written description of these stitches in the pattern, I thought a quick video demonstration might just be in order!

    Half and Full Cluster Stitches

This is how these two stitches are written out in the pattern:

HCL– Half Cluster = [Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loop loosely] twice (5 loops on hook). Yo, pull through 4 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops.

FCL – Full Cluster = [Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loop loosely] twice (5 loops on hook). In next st indicated [yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loosely] twice (9 loops on hook). Yo, pull through 8 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops.

And here's a closeup of the half and full cluster stitches, as seen on the Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf:

how to cluster stitches tutorial autumn sunset infinity scarf free cowl pattern free crochet infinity scarf pattern

I hope that this video has made these cluster stitches a little clearer for you! There are lots of different cluster stitches out there, but they almost all follow this basic format. Even if you are a complete beginner, with a little practice, you too can make this stitch (and any other crochet stitch there is)!

Are there any other stitches you'd like to see a video tutorial for here on moogly? Any particular questions on technique or patterns or the math of crochet? Let me know in the comments! I'm always on the hunt for new video topics, and I firmly believe there are no bad or dumb questions! I love helping people learn more about crochet!

Cuddly Cat Crochet Scoodie with Pockets

Several things came together to make the Cuddly Cat Crochet Scoodie with Pockets - a reader request, my kids' love of animals, and the inevitable need for new winter hats! Out of all these came this fun hat/hood-scarf-pockets cat lover's combo!

Of course, it doesn't have to be a cat - change the ear style and it can be any animal at all - the colors had me thinking both wolf and Totoro! In an orangey red it would make a great fox too. Your imagination is the only limit!

    Slip Knot

October 31, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 9 Comments

The Slip Knot is the start of almost every crochet project, the only exception being the magic circle. It's how we make that very first loop that goes on the hook. Most people think of chaining as the first step, but truly, the slip knot is where it all begins. Here's how it's done:

How to Crochet the Slip Knot: Right Handed Version

How to Crochet the Slip Knot: Left Handed Version

The slip knot is adjustable, easy to pull out when you've made a mistake, and a great thing to know. Showing how to make a slip knot is harder than it looks though - when I actually make them for myself I do it "inside" my hand, where even I can't see it. I had to really practice and think about it to bring it "outside!"

Before I learned how to make a slip knot (and WAY before I learned about the magic circle), I spent the first couple of years making tiny double knotted loops around the hook and just hoping for the best. Ahhh, the olden days before youtube! Luckily I happened across a book that explained it somewhere in there and my crochet projects got way faster and better after that. So I do know from experience that you can crochet without the slip knot... but I also know from experience that once you have it down, the slip knot is the best way; now it's second nature.

All Too Perfect Crocheted Bun Cover

crocheted bun cover crochet lace bun cover pattern crochet ballet bun cover pattern

The All Too Perfect Crocheted Bun Cover got it's start when a friend came to me with a request - bun covers for her daughter! Her beautiful girl wears them every day, but the commercial ones would wear out and were generally made for people with a whole lot more hair. As a thin-haired person myself, I could sympathize. So I designed these to fit a smaller bun - but keep reading to see how easy they are to upsize!

For Special Occasions - and Every Day!

These crocheted bun covers are strong and easy enough to use every day, and a little bit of sparkle and bright colors make them a fun fashion statement! There are two ways to finish these. You can work the last row around an elastic hair band, or you can weave a ribbon through and use that to tie the cover around the bun. Either way, you'll get a crocheted bun cover that only comes off when you want it to!

    Sven Sweater

October 23, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 43 Comments

It's been months in the making, but at long last the pattern has been written, tested by wonderful crocheters, and the Sven Sweater is ready for sale!

sven sweater baby cardigan pattern crochet baby sweater baby crochet pattern

It's been an exciting journey - one that began when I had my own little boys and realized just how many crochet baby sweaters were only for girls. This sweater is definitely for boys. And for girls! It's all in the colors. The pattern was inspired by a blanket I saw at a Swedish furnishings store over the summer - it was bold and graphic and had a great look. One that begged to be translated to crochet!

Figuring out how to put it all together was a learning process for me, and inspired me to make the Tapestry Crochet Video, to explain one of the techniques used in the sweater. It's this technique that has led me to label it as Intermediate difficulty, but I do think that a determined beginner could do a great job with it as well.

sven sweater baby cardigan pattern crochet baby sweater baby crochet patternBecause it is unique, detailed, and well tested, I've decided to make this my first paid pattern, for just $3.99. I hope you'll agree that it's worth it. It's sized 0 - 6 months, and is the perfect crochet pattern to make for any baby boy or girl. The Sven Sweater pattern is in PDF format, and available on Craftsy and as a Ravelry download. sven sweater crochet baby cardigan pattern baby sweater crochet pattern

Thanks so much for all your support and excitement about my past patterns - and don't worry, the free patterns will continue! But I hope to add more special, paid patterns in the future too. And I want to give a special thanks to all my testers, as well as those who volunteered - I couldn't have done it without you!

    Double Crochet in the Round

October 17, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 9 Comments

The double crochet stitch is one of the first handful of stitches most crocheters learn. In fact, I dare say the simple double crochet stitch scarf is one of the very first projects most new crocheters make - and for good reason! It's simple, fast, and a great way to learn all about tension and the importance of counting stitches.

Working in the round is a great next step, opening up the world of hats and bags! There's a simple mathematical formula to working double crochet in the round, and understanding it will help you make sense of patterns and design your own. Here's my explanation:

As I say in the video, it's also important to know when a stitch is really a stitch. If you're counting a ch 3 at the start of the round as a double crochet, then when you join with a slip stitch at the end you'll need to work into that top chain. And that slip stitch from closing up the last round isn't a stitch for working into at all!

Counting the double crochet stitches in each round can be tedious, I know, but there's really no better way to check your work. If you are having trouble identifying the first stitch of the round or the slip stitch from the previous round, then the best solution is to place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and count the stitches before you slip stitch to finish the round. With practice and experience it will get easier, so don't give up. I believe in you!

Thanks again for watching, and let me know in the comments if there are any videos you 'd like to see here on moogly! If there's a stitch that's giving you fits or a technique you need to see to understand, then I'd be happy to help out if I can. (And I could use some new video ideas!)

Basics of the Chevron Lace Wrap

October 10, 2012 by Tamara Kelly 31 Comments

The Chevron Lace Wrap is a popular pattern here at moogly. It's got great drape, a modern look, and with a repeating pattern it's easy to memorize and make! The pattern includes a chart and written directions, and quite a few people have made their own Chevron Lace Wraps.

But not everyone reads charts, and sometimes the written directions just don't cut it. So by request, now there's a video for those who learn better this way!

How to Crochet: Basics of the Chevron Lace Wrap

I hope that this has made the directions for the Chevron Lace Wrap clearer for the visual crocheters! I made the sample for the video in thick yarn so you could see the stitches, though the pattern calls for fingering weight yarn. That said, people have asked about using a heavier weight yarn to make the wrap warmer, and you can absolutely do that! Just bump up the hook size so that you get the look and drape desired in your fabric. The pattern for the Chevron Lace Wrap also include instructions on making it narrower or wider - so it could be a scarf or even a blanket!

I love seeing what people make from moogly patterns, so if you make a Chevron Lace Wrap (or scarf, or...), then please pop over to the moogly Facebook page and share a photo!
