Half and Full Cluster Stitches (HCL and FCL)

    Published: Nov 7, 2012 · Modified: Jun 19, 2018 by Tamara Kelly · 7 Comments

The Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf and the Winter Sunrise Scarf use two types of cluster stitches - half and full. These are unique stitches, though pretty representative of the "cluster type" of crochet stitches. Though there is a good written description of these stitches in the pattern, I thought a quick video demonstration might just be in order!

    Half and Full Cluster Stitches

This is how these two stitches are written out in the pattern:

HCL– Half Cluster = [Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loop loosely] twice (5 loops on hook). Yo, pull through 4 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops.

FCL – Full Cluster = [Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loop loosely] twice (5 loops on hook). In next st indicated [yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loosely] twice (9 loops on hook). Yo, pull through 8 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops.

And here's a closeup of the half and full cluster stitches, as seen on the Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf:

I hope that this video has made these cluster stitches a little clearer for you! There are lots of different cluster stitches out there, but they almost all follow this basic format. Even if you are a complete beginner, with a little practice, you too can make this stitch (and any other crochet stitch there is)!

Are there any other stitches you'd like to see a video tutorial for here on moogly? Any particular questions on technique or patterns or the math of crochet? Let me know in the comments! I'm always on the hunt for new video topics, and I firmly believe there are no bad or dumb questions! I love helping people learn more about crochet!

Hi aNA, I'm sorry you're having trouble with the videos! I'm not sure why that's happening for you. It's after you click the red arrow to play the video? If you close the netflix ad does the site reappear? I don't have any popup ads on the site, but there are banner ads on the bottom of the videos as they play - clicking the x in the corner makes them go away though. It's just so hard to say without seeing it. In the meantime, you can watch all the videos directly on youtube on the mooglyblog channel: http://www.youtube.com/mooglyblog

Love your tutorials! One question: Is the difference between a puff stitch and the cluster stitches the last draw through the final loop instead of the chain one?
