    Fair Weather Beach Tote

April 20, 2018 by Tamara Kelly 2 Comments

Fair Weather Beach Tote - crochet bag with a camera, yarn, hook, sunglasses, and flip flops

Who else is dreaming of a summer vacation? Sun, waves, and warmth - yes, please! So when you hand me a skein of yarn featuring beachy hues of blue and white - you get the Fair Weather Beach Tote!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links. Materials provided by Red Heart Yarn, Brittany Needles, and Clover USA.

    A Pattern for a Variegated-ish Yarn

The Fair Weather Beach Tote is made with Red Heart Super Saver Fair Isle - the Calm Fair Isle colorway, specifically. It's so pretty! Mostly white, there are random sections of different shades of blue throughout. Every skein of this yarn is a little different!

Fair Weather Beach Tote | crochet tote bag on a white background

So I played with a lot of different crochet stitches, but found that with this yarn, the color tells the story. To create interest, negative space is added every few rows - but if you prefer a more solid tote, you can skip those and just work in solid double crochet instead!

Fair Weather Tote Bag - free crochet pattern on Moogly, featuring Red Heart Super Saver Fair Isle

I've also played a bit with the handle, using a long chain woven through the stitches to create a sturdy set of straps that won't stretch too much - no matter what you pack on your next outing!

Saturday Sweater - free crochet pattern in 8 sizes! Made with Red Heart Fashion Soft, get the pattern on Moogly!!

The Saturday Sweater is the perfect crochet topper for the weekend - or any day! It's surprisingly fast, easy to crochet, and even easier to wear. And best of all, it comes in 8 sizes, and they are all free here on Moogly!

Easy to Make, Easy to Wear!

I wanted to make a crocheted t-shirt sweater. Something you can just throw on over a tank and leggings and go - or dress up with the right accessories! But it's simple enough to make that you can whip this up, even if this is your very first crocheted sweater.

The Saturday Sweater is made top down, so that you can totally adjust the length to suit your own frame and wardrobe. Be sure to read the instructions carefully - they tell you right when to try it on for a custom fit!

Saturday Sweater - free crochet pattern in 8 sizes! Made with Red Heart Fashion Soft, get the pattern on Moogly!!

I think you're going to love spending lazy Saturdays in the Saturday Sweater!

    Saturday Sweater

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue and Favorites

    US - K, 6.5mm hook - Furls Crochet

    700-1200 yds Red Heart Fashion Soft (100% Acrylic; 3/Light/DK/UK: 8 ply; 385 yd/352 m; 141 g)
    Colorway used: Grey Heather
    Yarn Estimate: Small/Medium: 2 balls; Large-3X: 3 balls; 4X/5X: 4 balls

This yarn has been discontinued. Recommended substitutions: Universal Yarn Uptown DK, WeCrochet Brava Sport, Premier Anti-Pilling DK Colors

Gauge (laid flat): 13 sts x 7 rows = 4"/10 cm in pattern

    Sizes (bust measurement):
    Small - 34"(Medium - 38", Large - 42", XL - 46", 2X - 50", 3X - 54", 4X - 58", 5X - 62")
If possible, mark the numbers for your size before you begin crocheting.

    NOTES:

This pattern includes up to 8" of positive ease, based on the bust measurement. For a slimmer fit, chose one size down.

The length of this top is totally customizable - just add more repeats of the last 2 rows. Be sure to adjust the length of both the front and back to match - or go longer in the back if desired!

It is strongly recommended that you try on your top before weaving in the ends from the side seams and adding the edging so that you can see just how long the fabric hangs and adjust both the length of the top and the length of the side vents. Remember that crochet grows with gravity!

If desired, substitute a Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC) and ch 1 for the Ch 4 beginning the even-numbered rows, and a CSDC for the Ch 3 beginning the odd-numbered rows.

If desired, substitute a Standing Double Crochet (STDC) and ch 1 for the join and Ch 4 beginning of the first Body rows.

    Twisted Double Crochet (Twisted DC)

    Special Stitch:
FP Bobble (Front Post Bobble): Yo and insert hook around post of next stitch from front to back, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (2 loops remain on hook), [yo and insert hook around post of same stitch from front to back, working just under previous stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops] 3 times (5 loops remain on hook), yo and pull through all 5 loops to finish the stitch.

    NOTES:

To make this blanket in a custom size, you can use the gauge and stitch count listed above to plan a new width/length. Alternately (and easier), you can use the Long Chain Method to chain a width slightly longer than desired, and then work the first row across according to the stitch multiple needed, continuing to the desired length.

If preferred, substitute a Chainless Starting Double Crochet for the Ch 3 at the beginning of the even numbered rows.

Cycle through each of the 3 colors in order, A through C, repeating to the end. Carry the colors along the side and you'll only have 6 ends to weave in for the whole blanket! See the Carrying Yarn Along the Side Tutorial for more info on this technique.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

Row 1: With first color, ch 102, skip the ch closest to the hook, sc in each remaining ch across; turn. (101 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each st across; change to next color when finishing last st, turn. (101 dc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the first 5 sts, *FP Bobble around next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * across, turn. (85 sc, 16 FP Bobbles)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2, changing to next color as directed.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in the first 2 sts, *FP Bobble around next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * until 3 sts remain, FP Bobble around the next st, sc in the last 2 sts, turn. (84 sc, 17 FP Bobbles)

Row 6: Repeat Row 2, changing to next color as directed.

    Row 7 - 78: Repeat Rows 3 - 6.

    Row 79: Repeat Row 3.

Row 80: Ch 1, sc in each st across; turn. (101 sc) Continue with this color for the border or change colors if desired.

    Border

Border Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around blanket, working (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner; join.

Border Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in each remaining st around, working (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each corner ch-2 sp; join.

Border Rnd 3: Ch 3, FLO dc in each remaining st around, working (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner ch-1 sp; join and break yarn.

Border Rnd 4: Insert hook in the st closest to where the next color is attached and the unused BLO of the st below, yo with the next color and pull up a loop, ch 1, sc through the same st and BLO, *sc in next st and BLO of the st below; rep from * around working (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner ch-1 sp; join.

Border Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in each remaining st around, working (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each corner ch-1 sp; join.

Border Rnd 6: Repeat Border Rnd 3.

Border Rnd 7: With next color, repeat Border Rnd 4.

Border Rnd 8: Ch 2, twisted dc in each st around, working (twisted dc, ch 1, twisted dc) in each corner ch-1 sp; join and break yarn. Weave in ends.

And that's how to crochet the Bunches of Bobbles Blanket! I hope you enjoy this beautiful, bold, bobbly free crochet blanket pattern!

    Easter Egg Granny Washcloth

March 23, 2018 by Tamara Kelly 18 Comments

Easter Egg Granny Washcloths - free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Is there anything better than the happy colors of spring after a long dreary winter? I'm not usually all about pastels, but the bright and cheery colors in Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie were begging to be turned into something Easter-ready - introducing the Easter Egg Granny Washcloth!

Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links; materials provided by Red Heart and Brittany Hooks.

Spring Cleaning Cloth - For Everything!

The Easter Egg Granny Washcloths can be dishcloths or washcloths - whichever you like. They are a fun way to perk up the kitchen this holiday, or great paired with a handmade bath fizzy in a special child's Easter basket.

Easter Egg Granny Washcloths - free crochet pattern on Moogly!

The stitch in the Easter Egg Granny Washcloth is pretty much like the Granny Stitch (hence the name) - the only difference is that there's no chain one space to work into, you just work right between the posts of the stitches, as if there were indeed a chain space there. This makes for a slightly tighter weave, that still has enough air space to dry quickly!

Easter Egg Granny Washcloths - free crochet pattern on Moogly!

This was my first time using Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie, and oh. mah. gosh. This is some gorgeous "kitchen" cotton - I can't wait to use it in some non-kitchen projects, it's just so smooth and soft! (And I'm a sucker for a great cotton, it's true!) But first, let's make some pretty spring free crochet dishcloths and washcloths!

Houndstooth Squares Blanket - gray and white crochet blanket on a chair against a white brick wall

    Clifford-Sized Hounds... tooth!

This blanket pattern is based on a pixelated version of the houndstooth check - I spent a lot of time with graph paper and markers figuring out the perfect layout!

And part of the fun is that the giant houndstooth checks don't show up until the squares are joined together. Houndstooth writ very, VERY large!

The pattern for the Houndstooth Squares Blanket is written a little differently. Be sure to read all the notes and info before you begin, and you'll end up loving this blanket as much as I do!

To continue, yo and insert hook into base of first st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through first loop only twice, yo and pull through 2 loops twice.

    NOTES:

Instructions are offered in two forms: a pixel chart and simplified written instructions. There is also a video tutorial linked above.

Split the large balls of yarn into smaller cakes or bobbins for easier use. You will need 2 bobbins of each color to work the pattern.

This pattern is worked in 3 long strips that are then sewn together. To make the pattern as a full-width pattern, you'll need 12 bobbins of color - so be brave and patient if you take this option!

As you change colors, leave the old color behind, hanging, and pick it up again as needed for the next row.

To change the size of the pattern, please see the charts below the instructions.

    PIXEL CHART INSTRUCTIONS:

Each pixel or square represents 3 exdc and 3 sc as follows. The sc are worked into the exdc.

The crochet symbols for the stitches that make each pixel.

And here is the repeat - 12 blocks x 12 blocks

Houndstooth Squares Blanket - pixel graph for basic repeat, purple and white squares on graph paper

This means that this chart above represents 36 sts (12 blocks x 3 sts) and 24 rows (12 blocks x 2 rows). The white squares represent Color A, and the purple squares represent Color B.

To make the blanket as shown, repeat this chart 3 times in a row, 3 times, making 3 strips like this:

Houndstooth Squares Blanket - 3 stripes of crochet, ready for joining.

Then, sew the strips together with the mattress stitch and add the border as written below. Put into plain language, the border is made by working sc evenly around the blanket in the same color as the stitch you are working into. A ch 2 helps turn each corner. Then, work a second round for the border in the darker color, working in the back loop only.

    WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS:

The instructions for Rows 1 and 2 are written in the standard format - after that, every odd-numbered row is worked in exdc, and every even-numbered row is worked in sc. The instructions for the even numbered rows are not given, as you simply change colors to match the previous row, as you'll see after completing Row 2. Turn after every row.

Row 1: With Color A (CA), FEXDC 18 sts, with Color B (CB), FEXDC 9 sts, with CA FEXDC 9 sts; turn. (36 sts in every row)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 9, with CB, sc 9, with CA, sc 18; turn.

    Row 3: CA 18, CB 6, CA 9, CA 3.

    Row 5: CA 18, CB 3, CA 9, CB 6.

    Row 7: CA 27, CB 6, CA 3.

    Row 9: CA 24, CB 6, CA 6.

    Row 11: CA 21, CB 6, CA 9.

    Row 13: CA 9, CB 6, CA 3, CB 18.

    Row 15: CA 6, CB 6, CA 6, CB 18.

    Row 17: CA 3, CB 6, CA 9, CB 18.

    Row 19: CB 6, CA9, CB 21.

    Row 21: CB 3, CA 9, CB 24.

    Row 23: CA 9, CB 27.

    Row 25: CA 18, CB 9, CA 9.

    Rows 26 - 48: Repeat Rows 2 - 24.

    Rows 49 - 72: Repeat Rows 26 - 48. Break yarn.

Repeat twice (or to desired dimensions, see below).

Assemble: Using the Mattress Stitch, sew the three strips together (see images above).

Border Rnd 1: Using matching color, sc in each st around, working ch 2 at each corner; join.

Border Rnd 2: With Color B, join to any ch-2 sp (corner) with a sc, ch 2, sc in the same ch sp, *working in the blo sc in each st to the next ch-2 sp,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in the ch-2 sp; rep from * around finishing last rep at **; join and finish off.

    Now Let's Play with Sizes!

Made with Red Heart Comfort Chunky yarn, each repeat of this chart makes a square that is 16" wide and 16" long. So, to plan this throw, I went with 3 x 3 - for a finished size of 48" x 48".

Houndstooth Squares Blanket - pixel graph for basic repeat, purple and white squares on graph paper

But this pattern is very customizable - here are some standard blanket sizes to get you started. Keep in mind that each repeat of the pattern (each pixel graph) uses approximately 172 yards of yarn.

Houndstooth Squares Blanket - pixel graph for basic repeat, purple and white squares on graph paper

    Baby Blanket: 2 x 2 - 32" x 32"

    Wheelchair/Lapghan: 2 x 3 - 32 " x 48"

    Twin or Full/Double: 5 x 6 - 80" x 96"

    Queen: 6 x 6 - 96" x 96"

    King: 7 x 6 - 112" x 96"

Using lighter yarn? Of course, you can make this pattern in worsted weight yarn too - or any weight! To figure out your plan, crochet one repeat of the pattern (Rows 1 - 24) in your chosen yarn. Take that measurement, and then you should be able to see how to put together your blanket (and your first strip will already be off to a great start)!

And that's the Houndstooth Squares Blanket! I hope you enjoy it - and that the different forms of the instructions make it easy for you! There will be a video tutorial coming very soon, if you are confused on the graph, or how to change colors or any of the details.

I think this houndstooth pixel graph might make another appearance in a Moogly pattern - I'm sure many of you are already plotting all the fun things you can do with it! Grab some graph paper and plan those colors!

If you do make your own Houndstooth Squares Blanket, I’d love to see a photo. So if you share it on social media, be sure to tag me @mooglyblog or #mooglyblog – and happy crocheting!
