Recently I discovered this amazing thing happening, called Design Wars – and it’s all about crochet! It’s a super fun site, contest and concept, and it’s getting better all the time! Today I’m excited to bring you a guest post from it’s founder, Salena Baca, telling you all about it! – Tamara
Salena Baca (Founder), on behalf of Design Wars:
Design Wars is a crochet pattern design challenge that I created in late 2012, and while the name suggests combat we are more of a sisterhood; we bond together to inspire, encourage, support and network to create a positive forum for our community to enjoy. So, while we are battling to create the best new design, we are doing so in a way that will successfully promote ourselves, our sponsors, and crochet in an effort to build a progressive name for Design Wars. Our quarterly challenges are geared to showcase exceptional talent in the crochet arena, and we strive to maintain high standards in our character, quality of work, and ability to group together as a team.
The Design Wars challenge is quite simple: we each create a brand new pattern using one specific type of yarn, and then we unveil our designs at once and let our public vote for the best design in a series of categories: Best use of yarn, Best use of color, Most original design, Best new design to wear, Best new design to gift, and the design that receives the most votes overall is named the Most popular design. Red Heart Yarns has proudly sponsored Design Wars since our second challenge, and so far we have created beautiful new patterns with Red Heart Shimmer, Red Heart With Wool, Crème de la Crème, and Anne Geddes Baby. All of our patterns are conveniently available on our blog, along with our schedule, past newsletters, and great interviews with fellow artists who we admire: Twinkie Chan, Repeat Crafter Me, and Mon Petit Violon, are a few we have featured in the past, and I look forward to presenting Debbie Stoller and the lady behind Mad Mad Me in September!
Our fourth design challenge concluded on 26 August and featured 10 uniquely talented crochet designers from all parts of the globe. Our next challenge will begin in mid-October, and we hope to feature at least 5 new guest challengers in the round! Follow our progress as we present vendor showcases, celebrity spotlights, and crochet design challenges; we offer 5 weekly newsletters with each quarterly design challenge, complete with weekly giveaways, an impressive prize pack from Red Heart Yarns, and expertly crafted crochet patterns that you get to vote for! Whatever your crochet skill level may be, you won’t want to miss it!
And believe it or not, it gets even better! Just yesterday the Design Wars site unveiled a new FREE PATTERNS section, featuring designs from the contestants! Be sure to give them a visit, check out the great designs and giveaways and vote in the next round! Thank you to Salena for the guest post!
