The newest block in the MooglyCAL2019 is here, courtesy of Beatrice Ryan Designs! I love the way this square reminds me of quilts – and a square of squares is pretty meta too! Here are all the details on Block #17!

Block #17:
Summer Circus Square

Above is the original made in 4 colors! Below, you can see my version, made with my 4 colors!
The Details
My Notes: This block is a lot of fun to make, though there are lots of ends to weave in – I recommend doing it as you go! That said, you can “assembly line” the little squares, or make them one at a time, whichever you prefer.
One change I did make was to use a blo sl st join rather than blo sc. Additionally, I used 4 lines to join them all rather than doing the strips first. Again, both work – it’s whatever you like best!

Sizing: I got to 12″ with this pattern as written! But remember, everyone’s gauge and tension level are different so be sure to measure as you go. Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.
What I Did: I used a Furls US-J, 6.0 mm hook and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows: Small Square Centers (Rnd 1-2): 3 each in Bluebell, True Blue, and Navy; Small Square Outer Rnds (Rnd 3-4): 2 each in Bluebell, True Blue, and Navy, and 3 in White; Joining: White; Enclosing Rnd 1: White; Rnd 2: Bluebell; Rnd 3: True Blue; Rnd 4: Navy; Rnd 5: White.
This square benefited from a mild blocking. To block this square, I used the wet blocking method and a Chetnanigans BlocksAll Ultra blocking board and Perfecting Strips.

Carys
Hi. I’m working on this square and I have a question about what you did. You say you connected the little squares using 4 lines instead of three strips. For some reason I’m having a really hard time figuring out what that means. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Just like drawing a tic-tac-toe grid! Does that help? 🙂
Carys
Yes it does! Thanks.
