Block #17:
Farewell Square
by Lorene Eppolite
Above is Lorene’s Square, in 4 colors. Below is my CAL square, in my 6 colors!
The Details
My Notes:Â Lorene used to blog at Cre8tion Crochet, but has since moved on to become the CEO of Furls! So it’s a real treat to be able to host her pattern for this year’s CAL right here on Moogly. It’s a really fun square to make, with great texture. And it’s perfect for learning a few new crochet skills!
Helpful Links and Tutorials: Magic Circle, Chainless Starting Double Crochet in Magic Circle, Chainless Starting Double Crochet (in a st), Ex-dc Sts, Post Sts, Standing Double Crochet, BLO – Back Loop Only, and Seamless Finishing.
Sizing: I was just a bit short on size, so I bumped the last round up to hdc instead of sc. However, everyone’s gauge and tension levels are different so be sure to measure as you go. Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.
What I Did: I used a Furls US-J, 6.0 mm hook, and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows (see pics for more info on placement):
Rnd 1 and 2: Tangerine
Rnd 3 and 4: Cornsilk
Rnd 5 and 6: Lettuce
Rnd 7 and 8: Iced Aqua
Rnd 9: White
Rnd 10 and 11: Pewter
This square required moderate blocking. I used the wet blocking method, or you could use light steam.

Sherry P.
Hello Tamara! I’m having trouble with square#17 round 5.. my count for round 4 is right, but when I finish round 5 I’m not getting 72 stitches, but 68.. I tried doing the same round over and over I don’t know what the problem is.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Sherry! It looks like the stitch counts starting in that row were incorrect – I’m editing them now! Thank you for letting me know!
Tawny Wren
Hi, Tamara! A friend of mine is having trouble with round 6. I looked at the pattern and I don’t understand it either. Why is there 2 ex-fpdc on one side, then 2 ex-fpdc in the next stitch, and then on the other side there is only 2 ex-fdc in the next stitch and one ex-fpdc in the next stitch?
Tamara Kelly
Would it work if the asterisk was moved to in front of the previous stitch? Have you checked in the CAL Facebook group?
Tawny Wren
Yes, I think that was the problem. Thank you so much for helping me!!! I haven’t checked the Facebook group, but I will. Thanks again!!!
Geraldine Gilbert
I believe rd 6 is missing a 2x in one or 2 places.
Geraldine Gilbert
It says 2X before corners but no 2X after corners.
