Big Sky Shawl

Life is often hard, and even the clearest skies have clouds sometimes. And as crocheters, we can make it better. One way is by making prayer or comfort shawls for those who need an extra hug, and to feel our love. The Big Sky Shawl was designed with this idea in mind - while maintaining a sense of style - and it's a free crochet comfort shawl pattern here on Moogly!

The Shawl Story
The Big Sky Shawl is made with Lion Brand Homespun, a favorite yarn for those crafting for others. It's warm, soft, and the yarn creates the texture - which means simple stitches shine. And the Big Sky Shawl does indeed use simple stitches, so almost anyone can make this easy crochet prayer shawl pattern!
The colors I used for the Big Sky Shawl are Montana Sky and Clouds - appropriate, no? Streaks of gray cut through the blue sky, but there is more blue than gray, to remind us of the bright times to come. The shaping creates a triangular shawl that's more V shaped than anything, with corners that wrap easily around the shoulders to stay in place. And it doesn't just help the person you give it to - it helps you too! Studies have shown time and again how crocheting improves our mental health, making this an excellent way to help others while you help yourself.
How to Wear It
You can wear the Big Sky shawl across the shoulders as a standard shawl, or wrapped around the neck with the point in front - either way, the optional tassels on the points help keep it where you put it. It's only 20 rows long (plus a couple rounds for the border), so you can whip one up in a just a few evenings. So let's get started!

Made to Last
While I adore the Lion Brand Baby Alpaca I used with this stitch before, making a blanket called for something a little more durable (aka kid and pet and life-friendly)! So I chose Lion Brand Heartland - it's super soft and comes in lovely colorways inspired by our national parks! I went with blues and taupe for a beachy feel, something I have been craving during this cold. But you can use as many or few colors as you like to create your own custom palette. And when you carry the yarn along the side, covering it up later with the border, you don't end up with a ton of ends to weave in either!

If there's one thing that turning 40 has taught me (and it's taught me a lot!)... it's that a good night's sleep is worth everything. But if sleeping were a skill, I wouldn't be very good at it. I toss, I turn, I wake up to go to the bathroom and then squeeze in an extra hour or two of worry here and there, because that's modern life, right? So when Brentwood Home offered to let me try their Sleep Wellness Bundle in exchange for my honest review, I jumped at the chance - as long as I get to share the sleepy vibes with one very lucky winner!

Finishing 2016 and Announcing the Moogly CAL 2017!
It's the end of 2016, and the MooglyCAL2016 wrapped up last month, so we'd all have time (with luck!) to do the joining and finishing. Mine still has a few ends to weave in, but that will have to wait til my holiday break - for now, let's talk about the Moogly Crochet Along for 2017!

Double the Fun!
The Celebration Wine Bag was based on a request I received from several readers - for a wine bag made to hold two bottles rather than just one! Perfect for gifting a white and red, or just taking two of your favorites to your next party, this bag keeps them safe and lets you carry them in style!
This pattern takes just one ball of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Bonus Bundle (or 2 balls of the regular size Wool-Ease Thick & Quick), and a couple of evenings to whip up! And the bobbles on the front look like snowballs - so fun!

Fold each of the Bases in half, short ends together, and place st markers (pm) in sts at the crease - halfway along each long side of the oval.

Cut 1 piece of plastic canvas into an oval slightly smaller than the crocheted bases.

ADD DIVIDER (working off one of the base pieces, set other base aside):
Row 1: Leaving a long tail, join to RS of one base at one of the st markers, surface sc across to the other st marker; turn (do not remove st markers). (8 sts)

ASSEMBLE BASE/BEGIN SIDES:

Step 2: Use st markers to line up and connect base layers.
- NOTE: Rounds 1 - 25 below are worked in the round and joined with a sl st, but then turned to work the other way - from the inside of the bag. If needed, use a st marker to mark the last st of each round to help keep st count.
Round 1: Holding bases so that the bottom faces you and the divider faces away from you, and working through the sts of both base layers, join to one of the originally marked sts (at the side of the divider), ch 1, sc in each st (and corresponding st of other layer) around; join and turn (remove st markers as you work this round). (36 sts)
