Welcome back for square #3 for the 2017 Moogly Afghan Crochet Along! Please be sure to read the whole post before you get started with the latest square!
First a quick summary and some important links:
- No need to sign up/officially join – just jump in and start crocheting! Work at your own pace. To learn more about the yarn used for this CAL and other details CLICK HERE!
- The blocks will stay free online forever. Each post will have links to all past block posts as well as the newest block.
- Each 12″ square is designed in worsted/aran weight yarn, with a US-J, 6.0 mm hook. If you choose a different yarn weight/hook size, your blocks will be a different size, but as long as you are consistent, then the blocks should be too! For example, with DK weight yarn, you should get blocks that are about 10″ in size. Get creative with color and make it your own!
- There is a Ravelry group for the CAL HERE, and a Facebook group HERE – all full of help and camaraderie! Thank you to all of the amazing volunteer moderators! It’s a great place to go if you need more help with a particular design!

Block #3: Crumpets and Tea Square by Cre8tion Crochet (link below)
Above is the original, made in 4 colors. Below, you can see my version, made with 6 colors!
My Notes:
- This pattern is free - CLICK HERE FOR THE PATTERN - to print a free copy for personal use, open a second tab to PrintFriendly.com and paste the pattern URL there, or cut and paste the pattern into a word document.
- This pattern was a lot of fun to make, and I love how the colors came together. There are photos included in the pattern to make it easier too!
- I did come up just the tiniest bit short, so I worked Rnd 12 as dc instead of sc, which got me right to 12". Everyone is different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.
- Techniques you can use with this square: Magic Circle; Keeping a Magic Circle Closed; Post Stitches; Standing Double Crochet; Chainless Starting Double Crochet; Seamless Join.
- I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, and my color scheme was as follows – Rnd 1: Rose Shocking; Rnd 2: Lemon; Rnd 3: Radiant Lime; Rnd 4: Aquamarine; Rnd 5-6: Aqua; Rnd 7: Rose Shocking; Rnd 8: Lemon; Rnd 9: Radiant Lime; Rnd 10: Aquamarine; Rnd 11: Aqua; Rnd 12: Silver Grey.
- To block this post, I used the wet blocking method - CLICK HERE to learn how to block your squares!
Thanks so much for crocheting-along with me! I can't wait to see all the beautiful blankets you crochet this year!

Nancy
Sorry to say, but I much prefer the original square. I love the colors in it and it looks very Victorian to me. Is there a way to print the original square? Thank you for your response. Nancy
Tamara Kelly
Hi Nancy! Both images here are from the same pattern, just different color choices. The linked pattern will have all the info you're looking for, and instructions on printing it are in the bullet pointed notes above. 🙂
Dee
I'm pretty sure that it's the same square, Nancy. The color changes make it look like a whole different block! I personally like the first one too.
Tamara Kelly
Yes! It's just different ways of doing the color - I expect most everyone will do their own unique take on it!
MELISSA
I love the way you put your colors together, the red part makes it look like tulips in the corners, is there a method to it or do you randomly choose your color order?
Tamara Kelly
So far this year I've just been going in rainbow order for the most part! 😀 Thank you!
Andrea
Quick comment - your URL on the original Crochet A Long says 2014, not 2017. Got confused for a second there.
😀 Keep being awesome, Tamara. I love your site and your work. I've been a long time follower.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Andrea! 😀 Yes, the URL issue is a weird category sorting issue. When I started the CAL back in 2014, I had no idea it would go on year after year! Long boring tech story short, I have to categorize all new CAL posts under the 2014 heading to keep them showing up in the same place on the blog menu. Lack of foresight on my part! Learning as I go. 🙂
Tracy King
I love your 6 color version, especially how the core re of the red round look like maple leaves. Thanks for showing me a different version and thanks for hosting the CAL 🙂
Tracy King
Corners of the red round oops!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Tracy!
Jinx mcgee
Are you joining your squares as you crochet or are you waiting until you do all of them?
Tamara Kelly
Personally, I wait until they are all done, so I can determine my layout before joining. The joining goes relatively quickly once they're all done. 🙂
Jinx Mcgee
I know this is going to sound weird...but since I started doing your CAL I feel like my crocheting skills have improved dramatically. I am extremely proud of myself! I just had to share that
Tamara Kelly
😀 I don't think it's weird, I think it's awesome! Totally what I was hoping for! <3 Thank you!
Sherri
Is there an error in the instructions for round 7. It has the first corner done as clusters and the remaining three not clusters. Having a blast with this CAL!
Tamara Kelly
I believe that was just an abbreviation on her part. 🙂 I'm so glad you're enjoying it! 😀
Upasana
Hi! How should I proceed in round 9. The dc i. Next 3-dc part?
I am stuck..
Tamara Kelly
Hi Upasana! Please contact the designer with specific design questions - I'm afraid I'm traveling right now with limited internet access!
