    Inspiration and Experimentation

I was inspired by a basket I saw in my favorite Swedish home goods store. Though it was made of felt and used snaps to assemble, I wanted to see if it could be done in crochet - with buttons!

It took a bit of experimentation for sure... But eventually, it was a success!

Button Up Basket - flat, unbuttoned

    The Yarn

I used Red Heart Sweet Home to make the Button Up Basket. It made this fast project even speedier, while also adding a ton of texture and visual appeal. And... it's discontinued. But this basket works up just the same in Bernat Blanket!

As for the buttons, you might notice they are printed on the side that's facing "in." I bought these a while back, but never found just the right project for them - and now prefer the wood look of the "wrong" side. Waste not, want not!

Beer Growler Cozy - free crochet pattern on Moogly

The Beer Growler Cozy makes a great gift for beer lovers, summer or winter - you might just have to make a few of this free crochet pattern on Moogly!

    What is a Beer Growler?

A growler is (usually) a glass jug used to transport draft beer - commonly sold at breweries and brewpubs so you can take some home for later. Locally, we are blessed with a variety of breweries, as well as a few new growler filling stations.

I love picking up something new from a local brewery, but keeping it cold until it gets home can be a challenge. And if it's hot out, that glass can get real slick with condensation!

So a friend suggested I crochet a Beer Growler Cozy - and I had to say, "why didn't I think of that?!"

Beer Growler Cozy - flat, empty

The Christmas in July Make Along

Christmas in July Make Along with Underground Crafter

This pattern is also part of the Christmas in July Make Along, hosted by Underground Crafter! Marie from Underground Crafter is hosting 31 days of crafty fun to kick start the handmade holiday season. There are 5 weekly themes, and a giveaway too. It's a mix of crochet, knitting, sewing and crafting - and a whole lot of fun!

This just happens to be Gifts for Men week, but you can see the schedule below:

    • Week 1 (July 1-7): Babies, Kids, and Teens
    • Week 2 (July 8-14): Women
    • Week 3 (July 15-21): Men
    • Week 4 (July 22-28): Home
    • Week 5 (July 29-31): Pets

    For Dad... or Anyone!

When I was invited to join the Make Along, and saw there was an opening for Men's week, I knew it was time to finally create the Beer Growler Cozy!

While beer drinking and brewery visits aren't just for men, I think this is a good crochet pattern to make for a men's gift - men can definitely be tricky to crochet for! I've used a stitch pattern with a lot of texture, but it's not lacy or floral in any way - and in Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie, it's practical too!

Sherbet Stripes Tote - free one skein crochet pattern on Mooglyblog.com

Inspiration for the Sherbet Stripes Tote

It's easy to fall in love with Red Heart Roll With It Tweed - it features 18 distinctively beautiful colorways, in easy self-striping center pull cakes. So I wanted to make something to show off this yarn - simple, lovely, and practical too.

Sherbet Stripes Tote - Supplies Needed

    A New Stitch?

After playing with the yarn and a few stitches, I came up with the Sherbet Stripes Tote - and a stitch I haven't seen before.

Sherbet Stripes Tote - closeup of top of bag

Much like Tunisian Simple Stitch, you slip the hook under a vertical bar of the stitch rather than under the top two loops. However, rather than keeping the hook in front of your work, you go on through to the back of the fabric, to yo, pull up a loop, and finish the stitch as usual.

    The Result

This creates a thick, dense fabric with a beautiful knit-like look that does not curl and, in my opinion, really lets this yarn shine! I hope you enjoy making the Sherbet Stripes Tote - and if you've seen this stitch before and know of a name for it, please let me know!

Sherbet Stripes Tote - make it with the free crochet pattern on Moogly and just one cake of Red Heart Roll With It Tweed!

    Crochet Abbreviations

FHDC - Foundation Half Double Crochet

    Center Single Crochet

Bag Bottoms - Rows to Rounds

    Special Stitches

Center hdc - yo, insert the hook between the vertical strands of the post of the stitch straight through to the back of the stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Side split hdc (right-handed) - yo, insert the hook under just the left vertical strand of the indicated stitch through to the back of the fabric, yo an pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Side split hdc (left-handed) - yo, insert the hook under just the right vertical strand of the indicated stitch through to the back of the fabric, yo an pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

    Notes

If you prefer not to start with a row of foundation stitches, instead ch 33, skip the ch closest to the hook, and hdc in each rem ch across for Row 1.

The pattern is begun in rows and then converts to rounds. See the bag bottoms tutorial linked above for help with this if needed.

    Instructions

    Row 1: FHDC 32; turn. (32 sts)

Row 2 - 4: Ch 1, center hdc in each st across; turn. (32 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, center hdc in each st across, turn the corner and hdc 4 along the sides of the previous rows, turn the corner and center hdc in each fhdc across, turn the corner and hdc 4 along the sides of the previous rows, join with a sl st in the first st of the rnd. (72 sts)

Rnd 6 - 48 (or to approximately 11"): Ch 1, side split hdc in each st around; join. After Rnd 48, break yarn and weave in ends. (72 sts)

Add leather handles per package instructions. If alternative handles are used, there should be enough yarn left over to crochet simple tabs if needed. Space evenly as desired.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped me brainstorm the idea for this bag's name on Instagram! I love hearing what you think!

Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch - free pattern on Mooglyblog.com

The Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch features standout texture and that classic straw look for a handmade summer wardrobe staple! And it's a free crochet purse pattern on Moogly!

Get the look with Red Heart Nylon

Straw purses are right on trend, and you can get this summery look with Red Heart Crochet Nylon! This unique yarn is perfect for accessories. While it's a little different crocheting with nylon, it's pretty easy to get used to - just use a strong hook!

Red Heart Crochet Nylon and a Clover Amour Hook

    Super Easy Construction

The Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch is made in a sort of incomplete oval - imagine a watermelon with one end cut off! Front loop and back loop only stitches form a textured fabric with great lines. And then to assemble all you have to do is fold it in thirds and crochet along the sides - easy as can be!

Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch - flap open

Mix It Up and Make It Yours

While I used the Natural colorway to get a straw look, Red Heart Nylon comes in 5 different colors, so you can make a variety of bags for your summer wardrobe.

And with the construction method used, you can easily make the Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch in any size - just stop when you've got the size you want, or keep going in the pattern! (But if you do go bigger, you'll need another ball of yarn.)

Step 2: From back side of the clutch, join to bottom corner and ch 1, sc through both layers along the side, sc evenly around the curved flap, and sc through both layers along the opposite side to the opposite bottom corner. Break yarn and weave in ends.

Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch supplies for finishing

Step 3: Sew in the magnetic snap or another closure device.

Step 4: If desired, cut 2 pieces of plastic canvas to the side of the finished clutch interior. Line the interior of the clutch with fabric, sandwiching the canvas between the crochet and fabric layers.

Like any classic bag, the Perfect Summer Crochet Clutch will always be in style - or on it's way back around again! I can't help but think it would also make a super cute coin purse with a shorter first row... what do you think?
