What is a Yarn Winder?

A yarn winder is a machine that you can use wind yarn into center-pull cakes. While electric yarn winders do exist, the majority are hand-cranked. I think this actually gives you more control, especially when things go sideways.

Though they can look confusing at first, they are extremely easy to use.  Generally speaking, all you need to do is clamp the yarn winder to a sturdy table, and feed the yarn through the metal arm loop. Then, press the yarn end down into the groove on the top of the shaft (I like to double it up to help it stick in the groove better).

Finally, start turning the crank - and watch your beautiful new cake form! I love winding up leftover skeins - especially when I've been pulling from the center, and putting it away as is would end up creating a mess of knots and tangles.

I also like to turn donut balls into cakes. Then they sit nicely in the yarn bowl instead of flopping all over! And they are pretty much a must for any yarn in a hank - that's guaranteed tangles if you don't wind it up first.
