This pattern is fun, easy, and very pretty! Not too holey, and not too stiff - just the right way to kick off the new year!

My square came out one inch short, so I added a round of hdc and that got me right to 12". But everyone's gauge and tension level are different so be sure to measure as you go, and check your gauge. Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.
I used a Furls US-J, 6.0 mm hook and Red Heart With Love, and my color scheme was as follows – Rnd 1: Holly Berry; Rnd 2: Hot Pink; Rnd 3: Tigerlily; Rnd 4 & 5: Lettuce; Rnd 6 & Rnd 7: Iced Aqua; Rnd 8: Holly Berry; Rnd 9: Hot Pink; Rnd 10: Tigerlily; Rnd 11: Fruit Punch.
This square benefited from a light blocking. To block this square, I used the wet blocking method and a Chetnanigans BlocksAll Ultra blocking board.

Just started work on 1st block. I've never done a block before. Do you ever make video tutorials? I'm doing my best working from written pattern but I tend do better with visuals.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Tori! I can't make tutorials for these as they are not my patterns, but you can request them from the designers. 🙂
Bonnie
I love the colors you chose for the 2018 CAL!
Tamara Kelly
Thanks so much Bonnie! 😀

I'm embarrassed to say that this will be the fourth CAL I've started, but I've finished none. The very first one is the one I've made the most squares for. I wish I could use the squares I already have for this, but they are all different colors and would not match. This year I am determined to get this one completed and get back to my hobby of crocheting. I look forward to all the patterns you'll bring us. Thanks for hosting these.!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Good luck - and thanks for joining in again!
Lisa M.
Don/t be embarrassed! I had all but the last 2 blocks done for the 2016 CAL and have just now finished them and am ready to join them together!
Linda
Are all the blocks going to be available free or is every other one pay only? I started a CAL a couple years ago only to find they only let you get 12 of the squares without paying.. I would really like to try again.
Tamara Kelly
All the squares will be free! 🙂
Jackie Luca
I made the first square in three color designs. They are beautiful!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad you enjoyed the pattern!

Tamara, I joined and was accepted. Big problem is I cannot find the pattern. What am I not doing correctly please, cause I am now 3 weeks behind.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Lynette! Did you click on where it says "This pattern is free - CLICK HERE" ? It's the first one of My Notes above. 🙂

I'm so excited about this. This is my first Afghan and my first ever square!!! What a fantastic project. I'm trying to recruit as many people I can to join. Completed my first block and it's beautiful!!!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad you're joining in!
Kathryn
How much wool will I need of each colour to complete all of the squares .looking forward to starting .
Tamara Kelly
Hi Kathryn! You'll need about 4500 yds total, how that works out for each color just depends on how many colors you choose. 🙂

I do have a beef about some of the free patterns . If the "Print Friendly" button is with it, that's the best. WONDERFUL.
The ones that need printing off the web page SUCK. You have to put up with 30+ pages of adds, if you can somehow get rid of the adds from the page before saving, when you go to print, you get empty squares OVER the pattern and miss half of it.
What is the point of CAL free patterns, with all this frustration????????
I love the CALs on the web, have even purchased some patterns to go with them, but have stopped even looking and getting an interest in them because of this.
I can understand the need of the adds, and some are even of interest, BUT PLEASE GIVE ALL PATTERNS the print friendly choice.
Edith
Tamara Kelly
Hi Edith! Did you read the first of "My Notes" above? There is an easy way to use Print Friendly even when it's not installed on the site. 🙂
Samya Richards
I have just started this CAL. On the first block- row 2: am I supposed to ch1 after the set of dc cl? Then on row 3: I don't understand. It says to slip stitch into any chain space, slip stitch in between next 2 dc cl...so this is why I asked about the previous row was I supposed to have a ch1 in between the (dc cl, ch1 , dc cl)?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Samya! Row 2 - only when indicated in the pattern. Row 3 - you can work between the clusters without having a ch sp there. 🙂

If you use Firefox there is an add-on for Print Friendly and it just puts a little button on your browser, need to copy a page, just press it and the download will appear. I just wanted to try to give back something.
Also, if the website won't let you copy or print, just save the page as an .html and put it in Calibre, convert it to PDF and it looks just like Print Friendly. Thanks for the lovely patterns.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you! ♥
Bonnie
I just discovered the CAL for 2018. Will there be a 2019?
Tamara Kelly
Yes! It will begin in January - I'm working out the details now! 🙂
