Ethan Baby Beanie

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue and Favorites

US – M/N, 9.0mm hook – Furls Crochet (used and shown)

45-90 yds Lion Brand Wool-Ease Tonal (80% acrylic/20% wool; Bulky/yarn symbol “5”/UK:12-14 ply; 124 yds/113 m; 3.99 oz)
Color A: Denim (1 ball)
Color B: Buttercup (1 ball)

Gauge: 9 sts x 4 rows = 4″/10cm in pattern

Optional: Clover Pom Pom Maker (yellow one used)

Sizes: Baby (up to 14" head circumference); Toddler (up to 16" head circumference); Child (up to 18" head circumference)

Stitch Multiple for Custom Sizing: Begin the hat with any multiple of 3 sts

Matching Pattern: Ethan Baby Blanket

BABY SIZE (14") INSTRUCTIONS (finished hat approximately 5.5" long):

Round 1: With Color A, leaving a long tail, FSC 30; join to work in the round, use tail to close bottom of round (see linked tutorials above). (30 sts)

Round 2 and 3: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st around; join. (30 sts) Break yarn after Round 3. Flip the brim over to work into the base of Round 1 to continue the hat.

Round 4: With Color B and working in BLO this entire round,  join near seam with a sl st and ch 3 (or Standing Double Crochet), 2 dc in the same st, skip 2 sts, *3 dc in next st, skip 2 sts; rep from * around, join. (30 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc2tog (counts as dc3tog), ch 2, *dc3tog, ch 2; rep from * around, join and break yarn. (10 dc3tog, 20 chs)

Round 6: With Color A, join to ch-2 sp near seam and ch 3 (or Standing Double Crochet), 2 dc in the same ch-sp, skip the next st, *3 dc in the next ch-sp, skip the next st; rep from * around, join. (30 sts)

Round 7: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc2tog, ch 1, *dc3tog, ch 1; rep from * around, join. (10 dc3tog, 10 chs)

Round 8: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc in the next st (counts as dc2tog), *dc2tog over next ch-1 sp and next st; rep from * around, join, break yarn leaving a long tail. (10 sts)

Assembly: Use long tail to gather crown; weave in ends. Add pom pom made with Color B if desired. (See linked tutorials above)

TODDLER SIZE (16") INSTRUCTIONS (finished hat approximately 6.5" long):

Round 1: With Color A, leaving a long tail, FSC 33; join to work in the round, use tail to close bottom of round (see linked tutorials above). (33 sts)

Round 2 and 3: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st around; join. (33 sts) Break yarn after Round 3. Flip the brim over to work into the base of Round 1 to continue the hat.

Round 4: With Color B and working in BLO this entire round,  join near seam with a sl st and ch 3 (or Standing Double Crochet), 2 dc in the same st, skip 2 sts, *3 dc in next st, skip 2 sts; rep from * around, join. (33 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc2tog (counts as dc3tog), ch 2, *dc3tog, ch 2; rep from * around, join and break yarn. (11 dc3tog, 22 chs)

Round 6: With Color A, join to ch-2 sp near seam and ch 3 (or Standing Double Crochet), 2 dc in the same ch-sp, skip the next st, *3 dc in the next ch-sp, skip the next st; rep from * around, join. (33 sts)

Round 7: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc2tog, ch 1, *dc3tog, ch 1; rep from * around, join. (11 dc3tog, 11 chs)

Round 8: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc in the next st (counts as dc2tog), *dc2tog over next ch-1 sp and next st; rep from * around, join. (11 sts)

Round 9: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc2tog around; join and break yarn leaving a long tail. (6 sts)

Assembly: Use long tail to gather crown; weave in ends. Add pom pom made with Color B if desired. (See linked tutorials above)

CHILD SIZE (18") INSTRUCTIONS (finished hat approximately 7.5" long):

Round 1: With Color A, leaving a long tail, FSC 36; join to work in the round, use tail to close bottom of round (see linked tutorials above). (36 sts)

Round 2 and 3: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st around; join. (36 sts) Break yarn after Round 3. Flip the brim over to work into the base of Round 1 to continue the hat.

Round 7: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc2tog (counts as dc3tog), *ch 2, dc3tog; rep from * around, join to first st with hdc (hdc join will be treated as a ch-sp). (12 dc3tog, 22 chs, 1 hdc)

Round 8: Ch 3 (or Chainless Starting Double Crochet), 2 dc in the same ch-sp, skip the next st, *3 dc in the next ch-sp, skip the next st; rep from * around, join. (36 sts)

Round 9: Ch 2, skip the first st, dc2tog, ch 1, *dc3tog, ch 1; rep from * around, join. (12 dc3tog, 12 chs)
