    Nautical Crochet Coasters

    Published: May 16, 2014 · Modified: Jul 5, 2021 by Tamara Kelly · 32 Comments

Come, sail away with me, to an island where the yarn is plentiful and the the crochet adventures abound! Or, make these Nautical Crochet Coasters, and dream of your own sea-faring good times!

Nautical Crochet Coasters! Four free #crochet patterns on Mooglyblog.com!

Purchase the downloadable PDF of this pattern on Ravelry

This coaster set includes 4 different patterns, all with a nautical touch. Part cork, part crochet, it's a super fun craft to make, use, and give as a gift!

I strongly recommend you either purchase the cork that is sold in flat sheets - the rolled stuff really didn't want to unroll for me, and I ended up going back to the store to get the flat kind - which was cheaper too! I found both kinds at my local JoAnn Fabrics, though the rolled cork was sold with the bulletin boards, and the flat cork was sold with the craft supplies. And it makes a LOT of coasters!

Alternately, you can also purchase pre-cut circles, available in some stores and on Amazon US (click here!). Or, skip the cork altogether, crochet a 4" wide flat circle, and then work the following patterns!

    Materials:

    • US - I, 5.5mm Hook
    • 35 yds Lily Sugar'n Cream (Worsted Weight yarn; 100% cotton; 3oz/85g; 150yds/138m; Swimming Pool colorway)
    • ⅛"/3mm thick Cork (I strongly recommend the kind sold flat, not rolled) or 4" wide pre-cut cork circles
    • Hole punch, pencil, scissors, yarn needle
    • PDF Circle Template (click to download - be sure to  print at Actual Size, do not fit to page!)

Special Stitches/Click for Video Tutorials: seamless join; tr - treble crochet; rsc - reverse single crochet

Prepping the Cork: (skip to Step 3 if you've purchased pre-cut circles)

    1. Begin by printing out the template, linked above. Cut out the paper circle.
    2. Trace your circles on the cork with a pencil. Cut out the number of coasters you'd like to make.
    3. Using your hole punch, punch 8 holes in the circle, about ¼" from the edge of the circle, spaced evenly around.

I just made 2 of each pattern for a birthday gift. I love them, I learned a new stitch (RSC), and I can't wait to give them away in the hand painted box I made to put them in (with an anchor on the lid!!) Thanks for the patterns!

I ORDERED THE CORK FROM AMAZON THAT YOU RECOMMENDED AND THE FIRST SET I MADE THE CORK IS SO THIN THAT EVERY TIME I CROCHET IN THE HOLES I HAVE PUNCHED OUT - THE CORK CRACKS. I HAVE SWITCHED TO A SMALLER SIZE HOOK, BUT I AM STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? I AM PLANNING ON GIVING SETS OF THESE FOR XMAS GIFTS. THEY REALLY LOOK CUTE. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

Hi Christy, I'm sorry you're having trouble! Steaming the cork to soften it up a bit should help with crumbling, according to my google searching.

okay - I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was punching the holes too close to the edge of the cork. Even though I was following the pattern. I also had to switch to a smaller hook to go thru the holes without the holes splitting.
          Thank

I was excited to make these coasters, but am having trouble getting started.
Once you join the yarn to the cork with a slip stick, and then make a single crochet in the same hole (of the cork) there are 4 strands of yarn in the hole where there should be two according to the picture. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you in advance for your help.
