Celestial Strings sent me a most gorgeous and special skein of yarn - beautiful subtly variegated purples in a superwash merino - and named Moogly Berry! How could I resist? Well, ok, so I didn't even try. What I did do was turn it into a super cozy one skein mini shawlette- the Berry Harvest Bandana Cowl!
Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.
The stitch pattern reminds me of ripe blackberries or strawberries, and the color just adds to the yum factor! The Berry Harvest Bandana Cowl can be draped lightly across the shoulders like a lacey shawl. Alternatively, you can add one button to hold it on for hands-free bandana cowl style! With a coat, sweater, or even a t-shirt, it is a great go-to piece for this autumn and winter!

So this row is to even that up before we work the final edging. See the photo below, where I've started to work this edging.) Working along the left edge, *[ch 1, sl st in side of next row] 3 times, ch 5, sl st in side of next row; repeat from * until you reach the foundation chain, working a sl st and ch 1 along the side of the final triangle (Rows 1 - 4).
Final Edging: Ch 1, sc evenly along the foundation chain to opposite corner, working an extra stitch in the end to turn the corner to work along the next side of the triangle. Sc in the first ch -3 loop, *dc in the next ch-3 loop, ch 1, work 2 sc around post of previous dc st, sc in the same ch-3 loop (one edge point made); repeat from * until you reach the point of the triangle, make 3 edge points in the ch-3 loop at the point of the triangle; repeat from * along final side of triangle; break yarn and weave in ends.
Block using water or steam to open up lace pattern, pinning as needed. Sew button to one end as shown below.
I hope you've enjoyed making the Berry Harvest Bandana Cowl, and enjoy wearing it as well! Use the button to close the back of the cowl - just use the holes in the lace to make it completely adjustable! Or leave the button off and use a shawl pin. Or make the whole thing in fingering weight and make a bandana for your hair! I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

You've managed to out do yourself! I didn't think it possible but this is beautiful. I'm , however, terrified to țry the pineapple pattern. It looks so hard! Is It?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Machelle, and thank you so much! It's not really, once you get going - mostly ch loops worked into chain loops! 🙂
Marrie
Oh Moogly! That is super cool! Thanks so much XD
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Marrie! 🙂
Carole
This beautiful! I can't wait to make it. Thank You for sharing your talent.

Kat
Beautiful shawl. Since I'm a plus size gal, I'm thinking of trying this with worsted weight yarn and a J size hook. What do you think?
Tamara Kelly
I think that would work great! You can also add any multiple of 16 to the starting chain to make it longer. 🙂
danielle
hi....im also plus sized....i was using the advise and using the J hook and i added two multiples of 16 to the chain but my ends look weird....the middle is great....but its not laying right at all on the ends...im going to frog it and start over since im only on row 8 just in case its my error....but is there anyway you could tell me what two increases on the chain would be just incase my math is seriously stupid lol....trust me not the first time lol...
thank you i would appreciate it...
Tamara Kelly
Hi Danielle! It sounds like you want to start with 154 chains. 🙂
Geraldine Ayers
This is beautiful. Hopefully will make it as a gift for someone special for Christmas. Thanks for sharing

Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Chaysie, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Leah
This is lovely! Maybe I'm just tired, but I'm having trouble understanding the ending on row 6. It is not even with the other side. I have 7 (including the starting chain) ch 5 spaces moving upward except at this end where all of a sudden it stops at the last ch 3 space and moves on to the next row. No ch 5 here leaving this end with only 6. Hoping someone can point out where I've gone wrong.
Tamara Kelly
You're doing fine! If you read ahead in the pattern this is addressed later. 🙂
Magza
Love this!!! Stunning, thank you so much for the free pattern 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Magza!
Susan
Hi, I ordered yarn to make one of these the first day I saw the pattern. I'm going to use fingering. So I have 440 yards. I'd like it to turn out a similar size to the original. So more repeats. Can you suggest where to get help or how to figure out how many extra repeats without running out of yarn? Thank you for a lovely pattern. I want to make it fast as a welcome present to the family, my son got engaged last night! So excited.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Susan! Thank you so much, and congratulations! 😀 I would recommend making a tiny version - starting with just 26 chains (the pattern is a multiple of 16, plus 10). That will give you 3 of the "berries". Then see how much yarn that used, and divide by 3, so you know about how much yarn each "berry" or repeat takes. From there you can see how much width that gives you as a guideline, and figure out about how many repeats you want to start with. Does that help?
Susan
I'll let you know how it works once the yarn gets to me! Thank you
LucY
Hello, I was just wondering if you would ever make a video tutorial of this pattern???? I would love to make one for my mom but I'm new to crochet and I don't know how to read patterns. Thank you for all your great work!
Tamara Kelly
I'll add it to the list Lucy! Thank you!
Debbie Thurmond

Patrice
Hi Tamara, thanks so much for this pattern. I whipped it up yesterday evening. I probably should have split the work over two days because my left hand is aching! Nevertheless, I enjoyed making it. This piece will make some nice Christmas presents!
I do have two questions:
1) About the final edge. I get that you're supposed to make an edge point in each of the ch-3 loops of the berry, but how many edge points go in the ch-5 sp between them?
2) Also, in Row 1, where you're crocheting over the 9 remaining ch at the end of the row, after you "[sc in the next ch, ch 3, skip 1 ch] 3 X," shouldn't there be a sc (in the next ch?) before you do the final "ch 1, dc in the last ch" that represents the last loop?
Hope all that made sense and thanks in advance!
Nicki
Hi I have the same question about the edging of the sides of the triangle. The edging is not in the video tutorial. Did you get your question answered?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Nicki! Thank you for posting - I had missed Patrice's post. I answered her questions, so I hope I answered yours as well! 🙂
Nicki
Yes thank you I think that is what I will try. I was trying to zoom in on the photo but I appreciate you getting to me quickly! I'm making this for my sister for Valentine's day and it'll be my first real completed project since I taught myself last summer.
Tamara Kelly
Sorry I missed this before Patrice!
1. Treat the ch 5 as if it were a ch 3. If this causes ruffling in the fabric, you can work another triangle in there.
2. There is a sc there. 🙂
Linda
What happened to the button to download the pattern? It was there, but before I had a chance to download, it disappeared . The pattern looks gorgeous!
Tamara Kelly
I don't know Linda, it should still be there! You want the green Print Friendly button at the very bottom of the post. Thank you! 🙂
Linda
Thanks, that worked! I didn't remember having to press the print button!!
Marcela Braga
Hi Tâmara! I'm having trouble understanding the border. I don't understand where to put the sl sts. If it's on the stitches of the border or in the spaces. Or If it's 3 sl st in each ch3 space? Don't you think about making a video of the border? Sorry about the English. I'm brazilian.
Tamara Kelly
Hello Marcela! I'd a sl st in each ch-3 loop along the side. 🙂
Jessica
Hi, I'm so lost starting at Row 6. It says to sc in the next ch-sp, but the next ch-sp is a 5 from the previous row. I don't have ch-3 spaces from the previous row (5). I hope this made sense. Maybe I did something wrong on row 5. But looking at the pattern, row 5 created ch-5 spaces, not 3. I'm lost!
Jessica
Figured it out! I found your super helpful video and realized... Of course there were ch-3 spaces!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Glad it helped!
louise
Hello,
I am extremely knew to crochet and have just finished the first row. In the second row it says to chain 1 and sc in the CH 1 sp.
------------------
uuuUUUUUUuuu
Am I doing the sc in the original 122 chain (depicted with dashes) or in the loops I made in row 1 (depicted with u)?
I know this is an obvious one but until you enlighten me I won't be able to progress >.<
Thanks for the beautiful pattern and for any feedback!
^.^
Tamara Kelly
Hi Louise! You're an ambitious beginner! 😀 Please watch the video tutorial - I think it'll answer all your questions. 🙂
Pat McF
Oh my! This is drop-dead gorgeous! I can't believe you are giving away this pattern. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love the coloring! I've been crocheting since I was about 6 or 7 years old...my Mom taught me and how to knit (not so keen on the knitting) and I love that these kinds of patterns are available again. By the way I learned almost 60 years ago. I am a big fan of your patterns, your generosity and your creativity!
Tamara Kelly
Oh my, thank you so much Pat! 😀 You put a big smile on my face this afternoon!
Myrna
This is absolutely adorable, and I think just the thing I was looking for. Perfect present for my fussy aunt 🙂
Tamara Kelly
🙂 Thank you Myrna!
Kathy
Thank you for sharing the pattern and video. I have recently picked up my crochet hooks after many years break. I am wondering if I could decrease the size by 16 fewer chains? I read the post about increasing by 16 so I figure to try the opposite to make a smaller shawl.
Tamara Kelly
Yes! By 16 either way. 🙂 Thank you!
Maj-britt larsen
This is my first time ever crocheting. I finally managed to finish the main part. It looks lovely. Thanks so much for sharing this gorgeous piece. However, I cant finish it. I am about to start to even out the left side and have looked at a video to see what a slip stitch is etc, but I really dont know how to do it. I wish there was a video for finishing off as well. I am making this as a present and would be so happy if I could complete it. I am using red color. Thanks again for sharing your pattern and great video. .)
Tamara Kelly
Hello! This is a very ambitious project, not one I'd recommend for beginners - I'm impressed you've gotten so far!
The Slip Stitch video tutorial: https://www.mooglyblog.com/slip-stitch-sl-st/
Finish off just means to break or cut the yarn and weave in the ends. 🙂
The Weaving in the ends video: https://www.mooglyblog.com/weaving-in-ends-crochet-video-tutorial/
Margo
Thank you for including a video tutorial! Can't wait to try this!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm glad to hear it, thank you!
Celi
I'm so glad you posted this to Facebook today. I love it and while I adore the purple I need to find a blue/green that will go with a dress I have.
Thank you so much!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm glad you like it Celi!
Sharon Malbeuf
Love these patterns, please keep them coming. Good job.

Elayne
I would love to make this Berry Bandana, I have even brought the wool, BUT, I can't print it. Can you please tell me how to get a print friendly version - (it wants to print the whole site - including comments - 31 pages) HELP!!!!!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Elayne! Thank you! Please use the green Print Friendly button at the bottom of the post. 🙂
Kim M.
So beautiful -- thank you for sharing your talent and passion.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Kim! 🙂
April
I'm baffled by row 7, doesn't work into row 6 or am I missing something?
Tamara Kelly
Did you check out the video tutorial and symbol chart?
SusAN in portugal
Dear Tamara
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern -it is so beautiful and 'simple' too.
Now ... I think I am probably missing something but in the pattern you say use 220yds of Celestial Strings Yarn DK. Now .... When I went to see the Celestial Strings Yarn to check the weight, I found that it is saying that it is Sport Weight Yarn which in the new weight numbering system is a 2 (DK being a 3) ! I know I could do it with whatever weight - but then I am hopeless at working out how much I really need whenever I do that - so can you suggest whether when looking at other yarns whether I should look more for a 2 or a 3 ?? I really do NOT want to run out!
Sorry to be such a pain!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Susan! Sport and DK are often considered the same in the US. You'll want to look for something 8 ply (11 wpi), probably a "3". 🙂
Carole Kasson
I love the yarn used to make the Berry Harvest Bandanna Cowl. How can I get a skein of that exact yarn and color?
Tamara Kelly
Click on the name of the yarn to go to her sale page - if she's out of that color, you'll need to email her about availability. 🙂
Sheila
love the Berry Harvest Bandana Cowl but having a very difficult time finding where to buy
this yarn and shade : Celestial Strings Yarn in Berry varigated color. Can you help?
Tamara Kelly
Her shop is linked above - https://www.etsy.com/shop/CelestialStrings She is an indie dyer, so you'll need to contact her about specific colors. 🙂
Olivia
Dear Tamara, this cowl is beautiful, thanks for sharing. I'm having trouble, I just finished row 8 the patterns then says row 9-28 repeat rows 5-8 it dosen't match for my next row, the next row should be the top of the berry but row 5 says ch 1 , sc in the ch 1 sp, chain 5, I'm so lost can you help me please. ?
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Olivia! Have you looked at the chart at https://www.mooglyblog.com/bandana-cowl-tutorial/ ? It seems to help most people.
Olivia
Hello Tamara, I finally figured out were I went wrong, in row 3 I did a double crochet instead of the dc, ch1, dc. Thank you your fast respond. The chart really does help. I can't wait to finish the cowl. Happy Thanksgiving.
Tamara Kelly
I'm so glad it helped! 😀 Thank you Olivia, have a great weekend!
Rena
I really love this pattern but is there a way to modify it to a rectangle????
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Rena! I'm sure it can be done, but it would take some designing! 🙂
K
Very pretty, but Row 1 ruffles badly and it cant be blocked hard enough to get rid of the ruffling without completely destroying the yarn. Every other row is fine.
Tamara Kelly
I'm sorry you had trouble with it K! 🙁

I almost started crying when I came across their pattern I’ve been looking for it for a month, I found it but it was to pay i’m sure it was this one but it wasn’t you it was someone else or it could’ve been sent me there but it look like this one a lot and when I saw yours and it was free and maybe I’m a start crying I’m not ashamed to say that I’m on disability I was in a bad car accident someone ripped off my foot off. I just can’t keep paying for patterns , I understand people put a lot of work into them and I respect that it’s not that and I wish I could pay for every single one of the ones that I love but I just can’t . you just don’t know how much coming upon this pattern , but I was having a bad night and I came across this pattern. Isnt funny out just a little things can make a difference. thank you so much you don’t know how much I needed this I hope I can do it I’ve only been crocheting a few months , sorry everyone for my ramblings 😞

I would like to use a single crochet foundation chain to start this off. Any reason why I wouldn't do that?
Tamara Kelly
I think that would be fine! 🙂
